£3.9m investment planned for town centre HOLMFIRTH’S market hall will be demolished and replaced with a ‘multi-use space’ – including a car park – as part of a £3.9m investment to improve the town centre. The long-mooted plan – first decided by Kirklees Council in 2018 – is down to the Huddersfield Road venue ‘no longer being financially viable’. With money to spend from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the council is pressing on with its so-called Holmfirth Town Centre Access Plan. Town centre roads –

which the council says will ease congestion and speed up journey times – are also in line for improvements, according to a planning application. The bridge over the River Holme will be replaced with a wider deck providing improved views of the watercourse and opportunities for additional event space, cycle parking and seating, the document revealed. “The proposed scheme will complement adjoining businesses in several ways – it will provide them with secure bin storage, reopen Hollowgate back up to Huddersfield Road and

Holmfirth’s market hall could be set to be replaced. draw additional footfall – and expenditure – between the two areas,” a planning statement said. “It will introduce a number of public realm

improvements and make the area considerably more attractive to customers and visitors alike and will provide additional town centre car parking.

“Unlike other car parks in Holmfirth, the redevelopment and expansion of Huddersfield Road car park represents a strategic opportunity to significantly increase pedestrian connectivity within Holmfirth town centre, particularly between Huddersfield Road and Hollowgate. “The existing market hall building does not contribute to the significance of the Holmfirth conservation area. “The upper market hall is of no historic or architectural significance and the lower market hall extension is a negative feature that detracts

from the character of the conservation area. “While the redevelopment of the market hall site for a car park would have a negligible adverse impact on the conservation area, the demolition of the lower market hall would be beneficial.” A public consultation launched on August 20 and will run until September 10, before the council’s own planning board members decide on the scheme. The scheme forms part of wider plans to improve road access across Kirklees and is funded through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund.
