A refundable bond of £20.00 is required at the time of booking to cover any breakages and damage. Parties running later than 9pm will be charged an additional £40.00 to cover clean up time. Residents living in the Parish of Holmesfield will receive a 10% discount for Private Functions.

Licensable activities such as music, dancing and particularly the sale of alcohol may require a Temporary Event Notice which must be applied for at the licensing section of North East Derbyshire District Council prior to the booking.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING

It was with great sadness that Holmesfield Parish Council learned of the passing of HM The Queen.

The meeting scheduled for the 14 September 2022 was cancelled as each meeting requires three clear working days notice, but under Section 243 of the Local Government Act 1972 mourning days are excluded for calculation purposes.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Wednesday 12th October from 7.30pm in the Committee Room at Holmesfield Village Hall on Vicarage Close. All are welcome to attend.

HOLMESFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

A Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on Monday 3rd October, 8pm to 9pm in Holmesfield Village Hall. Everyone welcome!

HOLMESFIELD PLAYGROUND: PUBLIC SPACE PROTECTION ORDER

Signs have been put on each entrance to the Play Ground reminding dog owners that North East Derbyshire District Council have put Public Space Protection Orders on all play areas within the District, this prohibits the entry of dogs to the Play Ground. Please adhere to this for the well-being of children using this facility.

USE OF PUBLIC RIGHTS OF WAY

There have been a number of complaints over the misuse of footpaths in the Parish by cyclists and horse riders. The designation of each right of way is integral to who can use:

• Footpaths: for walking, running, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Bridleways: for walking, horse riding, bicycles, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Restricted byways: for any transport without a motor and mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Byways open to all traffic: for any kind of transport, including cars (but they’re mainly used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders).

POLICE REPORT TO PARISH COUNCIL

A written report has been received from PCSO Jonathan Flower.

The crimes reported in August 2022 include two theft, two criminal damage, one public order and one vehicle crime.

Over the last month there has unfortunately been a number of incidents of fly tipping in and around Owler Bar roundabout. As a team, Dronfield SNT are aware of the concern and are conducting regular patrols along with some partner agencies.

The speed enforcement team will be visiting the area outside Penny Acres school to address the ongoing speeding concerns through the village, and other measures are being looked at to ensure the safety of children and parents at this location.

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH VOLUNTEERS

Thank you to those that have come forward – more volunteers would be welcome. We are all aware of the issue of speeding traffic on the main routes through Holmesfield and Millthorpe and we really want to carry out more speed watches to make our parish a safer place for all residents.

HOLMESFIELD BUS SERVICE CHANGES

Commencing on Monday 3rd October, TM Travel will no longer be operating the village bus service – the No.16 – which runs from Dronfield Civic Centre to Chesterfield (Broombank) via Holmesfield and Millthorpe. A slightly revised service will now be operated by Stagecoach and the new timetables are on pages 55 & 57.

Changes to the timings are relatively minor, the only major change being the former 16.54 and 17.24 services from Holmesfield to Chesterfield which have merged into a single bus departure at 17.04.

The major benefit to travellers is the ability for onward travel on other Stagecoach services – specifically the No.43 Sheffield to Chesterfield service via Dronfield Woodhouse – without the requirement to purchase any additional tickets. A summary of the new ticketing options is as follows:

Single tickets – Single tickets for one off bus rides are purchased from the bus driver and the price depends on the distance. You can check the fare for your journey using the journey planner at stagecoachbus.com or on the Stagecoach bus app (Apple or Android). The bus driver accepts cash and contactless payments.

Silver DayRider – a day of unlimited travel on Stagecoach buses in South Yorkshire, Dronfield and Chesterfield plus Supertram. Buy from your bus driver or on the Stagecoach bus app.

Adult: £5.20 (£5.10 on the app); Child: £3.20; Group travel of up to 5 people: £15.00

Silver Flexi5 – if you are a regular traveller but not every day then you can save money with the Flexi5 deal available exclusively on the Stagecoach bus app, offering 5 Silver DayRider tickets for the price of 4.

Silver MegaRider – a week or longer of unlimited travel on Stagecoach buses in South Yorkshire, Dronfield and Chesterfield plus Supertram offering daily commuters fantastic value for money. Tickets are issued to a smart card (if you don’t already have one they cost £1 and are reusable), alternatively weekly tickets are also available to buy and use on the Stagecoach bus app.

DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM

Dronfield SNT conducted an estate walk around Holmesfield on 16th September with members of the public and Rykneld Homes. It is good to listen to the community about concerns on the estates and wider issues that are a concern to the community.

One of the concerns raised was speeding through the village. This is something that we are already working on with relevant partner agencies with including Parish Councils, local schools and Derbyshire County Council to see what improvements can be considered. We are well aware that speeding remains a concern for residents.

Dronfield SNT would like to make residents aware that over the past few weeks there have been numerous reports of fly tipping – some of which have been set alight.

There is a lot of work currently ongoing with Dronfield SNT, the Environmental Health team from North East Derbyshire District Council, the Fire Service and other agencies.

These investigations remain ongoing – if anyone has seen any fly tipping or witnessed the dumping of any items specifically, please contact North East Derbyshire District Council.

As we roll into start of a new school term can people please consider the following points when taking or collecting children to schools across the area. Dronfield SNT continues to work closely with schools, DCC Highways and other key agencies to look at long term ways to improve school parking.

Please park in a safe and legal manner. The police can remove your unattended vehicle if you cause an obstruction, and Civil Enforcement Officers can issue you with a penalty charge notice for stopping in a restricted area. This means blocking a driveway or a path even for a short amount of time.

Pavements are for people, help keep pedestrians safe or risk prosecution and your vehicle being towed away. Make sure you;

• Observe in force parking restrictions that may apply.

• Consider parking further away from the school.

• Consider local residents and whether they have immediate access onto and off their driveway.

• Remember that buses are there to provide a public service and inconsiderate parking can give rise to unnecessary delays.

• Consider people who are blind, partially sighted, elderly, infirm, mobility scooters, wheelchair users, adults with prams - they shouldn’t need to step into the road because you’ve parked selfishly.

JERUSALEM THE GOLDEN

The death of Queen Elizabeth II was an event that most of us, who’ve lived our lives with her as a constant, quietly dreaded. We knew that she represented something about ourselves which if we’re honest has been slowly dying for a long time. Values of service, putting the other first, humility, gentleness, faith – we have gradually let them erode, stone by stone, and if we’re not careful the edifice will quickly crumble. The more we have focussed on the value of the £, the lower sterling has fallen. The more we have focussed on building up our own empires in houses, cars, holidays and hobbies, the less we have felt part of a common-wealth, a community. The Queen knew her Bible where, in the Book of Ecclesiastes, this way of life we have fallen into is described as a ‘chasing after the wind’.

King Charles’ accession to the throne is therefore a key national moment. Which way will we go? Will we seek to emulate the golden generation who selflessly stood up to Hitler? The Queen was among them, but her generation are nearly gone. Or will we continue down the dark path we are heading?

We may feel bereft, rudderless, leaderless. We may feel that without Her Late Majesty at the helm we will see further decline and debasement of all that made this county great. The good news is that there are many, many people, people of faith, some faith, or none, who share the Late Queen’s values and who are standing against the tide. And the even better news is that the King who guided our Great Queen is still on the throne, and always will be. Our Good Shepherd King, Jesus Christ, will guide us if we hearken to his voice. With him at the helm we may yet build the New Jerusalem in England’s green and pleasant land.

God bless Her Majesty - may she rest in peace and rise in glory.

GLOW! : HOLMESFIELD YOUTH CLUB

A great start back to Glow! this month! We have a full programme of fun planned for this term including the postponed trip to laser quest.

Glow! is for young people in school years 7-13 on Monday nights in St. Swithin’s Church Hall 7.00pm to 8.30pm. Entry is free and there is a cash tuck shop.

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION

On 20th August we held our Annual Show. There was a good turn out but not so many entries in the fruit and vegetable sections due to the very hot weather . However we had some very good entries in the Flower Section and in the Domestic Section. Prizes were won, tea was drunk and a lovely afternoon was had by our members and visitors.

On 7th September Mr. Carl Leaman of Millthorpe Nursery gave a very interesting and useful talk on the propagation of plants by cuttings, seeds and division. He also explained the best way to approach compost watering and considering the optimum size of pot. There were spring bulbs available from the nursery to help us plan our spring gardens.

Our next talk will be on Wednesday 5th October from 7.30pm in Holmesfield Village Hall presented by Ms. Sally Mosley on “A Year in the Peak District“.

Our famous Pie & Pea Supper will be held on Wednesday 2nd November in Holmesfield Village Hall from 7.30pm. The entertainment will be provided by local musicians Croft and Smith (‘the two mushy peas’) and “a Walk up the Garden Path of unpredictability” . This will be very intriguing as our Social Secretary remarked, so we shall have to wait and see.

The new edition of the Holmesfield Bridleways and Footpaths Guide is now available, price £7.50. Pending a permanent venue for the purchase of the guide they are available temporarily from The Angel Inn, The Rutland Arms and also the Dronfield Hall Barn.

Although there has been a delay in getting the books printed due to the Covid outbreak, the response from purchasers has been gratifying and the committee has been delighted. We hope you will enjoy walking some of the routes before winter comes along.

Hello everyone

As the temperature falls and the nights draw in, Holmesfield Village Society are looking forward to welcoming you all to our spooky Halloween movie events in Holmesfield Village Hall.

The first showing is a family film. We hope you and your families will join us at 2pm on Saturday 29th October when we will be showing the children’s animated comedy movie, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. Entry is by advanced ticket only available from me or any other member of the Village Society. The cost of the tickets is £5 for adults and £4 for children. Once again we will be offering hot dogs and drinks and it should be a really fun afternoon. We would love you all to come dressed up in your spooky Halloween costumes!

Later the same day we will be showing

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. We expect that the songs will be familiar and we are sure that you will know the dress code – please join in the fun! We are sure you will all enjoy this popular horror-themed comedy film that has toured the UK as a stage show so many times. Our doors open at 6:30pm and the film will start at 7.00pm. Refreshments including a licensed bar will be available.

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL

Dear friends of Penny Acres Primary School, What a busy start we’ve had to the new term. We welcomed our fabulous new starters, all of whom have settled beautifully into our Penny Acres family and are all enjoying the vast array of curriculum experiences we have on offer.

Our clubs are proving ever popular with the children having access to Street Dance, Fencing and Cross Country. Our Cross Country club takes us off site and into the woods, so if you go down to the woods today, you might be in for a big surprise (a gaggle of children showing our adults just what it’s like to be young).

This term, all of our children (from Reception to Year 6) visited the Derby Open Centre for the day. Whilst there, we visited a Hindu Temple, an Islamic Mosque and a Sikh Gurdwara. As always, our children represented themselves and the school admirably and came away with a much deeper understanding and respect for different cultures, faiths and traditions. A thoroughly enjoyable day out.

We have a lot planned for the year ahead and I look forward to sharing these with you in future editions.

Ghostly White • Devilishly Red • Pumpkin Orange • Vampire nights. You could also bring Halloween accessories to wire in or drape over, such as spiders, cobwebs, ghosts, etc.

Equipment will be available to buy on the night. If you don’t have a candlestick, a jug or vase would do if it has a level surface on the top to attach the dish. Otherwise, it can be a tabletop arrangement or in a basket as long as there’s no handle. Black Flower Spray will be available to use if you wish.

HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP

PADLEY CHAPEL WALK

On Wednesday 5th October, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Millstone Country Inn near Hathersage (S32 1DA). We will walk down a track to Grindleford Station cafe where we will have coffee before continuing on to Padley Chapel. Anne-Marie Fletcher will give us a presentation about the Chapel lasting about 30 minutes before returning back to the pub for lunch (optional).

The walk is approximately 3½ miles long but a short cut is available.

If you would like to come just turn up on the day.

The cost of the walks is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church.

AUGUST 2022 WEATHER

August was quite a pleasant month this year. The average temperature was 17.4°C which is more than two degrees warmer than normal. The warmest day was on the 11th when the maximum was 31.8°C or 89.2°F. After five consecutive months with well below average rainfall, August was only just below normal with 63mm of rain –90% of the amount we expect. Most of this rain fell on just three days of the month so there was plenty of time left for sunshine. I recorded 267 hours of bright sunshine. It was a good summer holiday month for schoolchildren, with sunshine and warmth to enjoy but also some rain for the gardens and the reservoirs.

My weather station records the wind speed and for the whole of August the average wind speed was only 3.1mph. It was the calmest month since July last year. For much of the month our weather was dominated by large high pressure anticyclones and these tend to give us still conditions. The 3.1mph can be compared with February this year when the average wind speed was 12.9 mph. Electricity generation from solar and wind is obviously affected by the weather. A lack of wind during the summer months still leaves solar generation to keep things going, However, a problem can occur during the winter months, if there a lack of both wind and sunshine. For example, November 2019 was almost as calm as August this year but there were only 12 hours of bright sunshine over the whole month, so both solar and wind power generation would have been low. During the last month, solar and wind renewable generation was about 20% of our total electricity generation. However, more than 50% of the power generation was still obtained from gas and that of course is what lies behind the current very high cost of electricity.

So the best of summer has gone and we have now entered autumn. Apples, plums and blackberries seem to be in abundance.

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

September sees yet another season draw to a close, one that has seen varying levels of success for the teams involved. The 1st Xl occupied the final relegation spot finishing third from bottom of their league, whilst the 2nd Xl and ladies teams (pictured below) gained promotion.

All is not lost however for the 1st XI as there is a possibility that teams in the divisions above may drop out meaning a reorganisation of the division with the likelihood that only two teams will be relegated.

Yet again the season has seen many of our juniors step up to the senior teams and put in some excellent performances. Louis Bolsover (aged 14) finished 6th in the 1st team batting averages whilst Max Wood, also aged 14, finished 4th in the bowling. The 2nd Xl saw many good performances from the juniors with 14 taking part regularly over the season.

A similar theme ran through the ladies’ team with Edie Pearson, Grace Bolsover and Emilia Hollis all playing key roles.

Going Forward: Yet again the club has heavily invested this year in its facilities. This will carry on over the winter with the new club house being installed. This is an addition to the existing pavilion and will act mainly as social space allowing the current building to be reconfigured to give better changing accommodation. The usual end of season ground repairs to both outfield and the wicket will take place to ensure they are up to standard for next year. Investment is required for new equipment, mainly in the form of a new outfield mower. If anybody is aware of anybody wishing to sell a large gang mower, please contact us.

HOLMESFIELD CHARITABLE TRUSTS

The trustees of the Penny Acres Charitable Trusts are asking everyone if they know why we have our Trusts and who they are for ?

We are very fortunate in Holmesfield to have three Charitable trusts which are open to application by anyone living in Holmesfield.

The revenue for the Trusts comes from land donated in the 18th century on Cowley lane and later donations which are owned by the Charity Commission on behalf of the Penny Acres Charity.

The Trust supports the ‘Educational Foundation‘ which is open to anyone age 25 or under who, or whose parents are residents in the village. Over a period of many years grants have been awarded for the purchase of books and more recently towards computers and sports equipment.

The Trust receives regular applications and the Trustees are keen to encourage more applications to the ‘Relief in Need Charitable Trust’ and feel the old fashion Victorian wording of the Trust may be putting people off making an application. The remit of the Charity is to relieve hardship, need and distress – a very old fashioned way of saying that these days, life can be difficult as the cost of living is increasing. Anyone over 60 who is a resident of Holmesfield can apply and there is no means test applied. HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK

A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted.

Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance.

Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS

Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence.

The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense.

Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. Our latest evocative image from the lens of W. “Harry” Hewitt of Dronfield taken in the early 1900s is of Common End Farm which is on the road to Lydgate from Holmesfield Common and still standing today. The 1901 census tells us that it was occupied by William Bratton (born in Knightley, Staffordshire), his wife Mary (born in Hodnet, Shropshire) and their daughters Emily (22) and Margaret (12). Only Margaret was Holmesfield born. Sadly the 1911 census listed only a widowed Mary Bratton as farmer and head of the household and Margaret.
