DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM April crime figures: Criminal damage: 2 (+2), Burglary: 2 (+1). We are sorry to say the main focus has been two burglaries this month so we would urge people in the community to report suspicious incidents when they occur. In respect of the other incidents they have been isolated and specific so don’t have a community concern. We have been and continue to work with partner agencies in respect of parking across the parish including parking concerns raised at the junction of Cowley Lane and Main Road, Holmesfield. We are working with DCC to look at suitable action that can be taken to reduce the concern raised to agencies and improve the safety in that location. Following a number of reports in respect of motorbike crime we offer some key tips to consider: Safety tips to keep your motorbike or moped safe: • Remove the keys if applicable • Lock your bike. • Never rely on just using your steering lock to secure your bike. • Fitting an alarm can be a deterrent to thieves. • Using a disc lock helps to secure the front brake disc to physically stop it from being wheeled away. • Use a grip lock to secure the brake and throttle controls. Sold Secure approved. • Use a cover just doing this can mean thieves don’t ‘see’ it. Thieves often ‘shop’ for particular bike models, so using a bike cover instantly makes it less attractive to them, as they can’t see if it’s the model they are interested in. A cover also provides another time consuming obstacle for the thief. • Property mark the parts. • When at home the best place to keep your motorbike, moped or scooter is in your garage or shed. Fit a garage door defender or upgrade garage door locks. • Garage and shed alarms as well as low level dusk to dawn lighting will also enhance security. Fitting a ground anchor also provides extra security. Many that are stolen are never recovered. Some are used in crime or broken down for parts. If your bike is stolen - never put yourself at risk. Don’t make it easy for thieves. ST. SWITHUN’S DAY IF THOU DOST RAIN... This month we celebrate village week with many festivities to enjoy as ever. The date of these celebrations is tied in with St. Swithin’s Day which is on the 15th July. Swithin (or Swithun) was an Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester and subsequently patron saint of Winchester Cathedral. Winchester was at that time rather like the capital of all Anglo-Saxon England, especially after King Ecgberht secured the submission of the Northumbrian King Eanred down the hill at Dore in 829AD. Swithun became bishop in 852AD under the reign of Ecgberht’s son Æthelwulf, father of Alfred the Great. Of course these historical details about Swithun are eclipsed by the folklore surrounding the British summer weather: St. Swithun’s day if thou dost rain For forty days it will remain St. Swithun’s day if thou be fair For forty days ‘twill rain nae mare I don’t know why our village church is dedicated to Swithun - perhaps because of the historical links to nearby Dore? Perhaps some local history boffin can enlighten me?! The history of our great nation is something to cherish and preserve, for by it we know something of our own character and spirit. When darker times come we have an anchor point, a sense that all will be well, and all manner of things will be well. Perhaps you could help with the preservation of a bit of your local history? The maintenance of our Grade II listed building and ancient site of village life and worship is a costly enterprise for our congregation, and we cannot do it without the village’s help. At one time there was a churchyard maintenance group who did a great job of keeping the churchyard in good order, but the group has long since folded - is this something you could help with? Another way you could help, if you are able, is financially - like every household and organisation right now there are bigger bills to pay. SCOUTING RETURNING TO THE VILLAGE Scouting will soon be returning to the village of Holmesfield after many years of being based in Dronfield. The village has a long tradition of Scouting, 1st Holmesfield Scout Group was officially registered in 1910 and the current group – the 3rd – officially registered in 1957. The group have secured access to a piece of land behind St. Swithin’s Church and are planning a new building to provide the facilities, support outdoor activities and store the equipment that makes scouting such an engaging experience for young people. With over a 100 years of Scouting based in the village we are excited to be able to return and continue the tradition. The land lease is going through the legal process and the building design has been completed and we are working through the volume of paperwork required to implement a project of this scale. Fund raising is a crucial part of this project as an estimated £400,000 is required to complete the build and fit out the building with the all the necessary features required to safeguard young people and make the facilities accessible and available to everyone between the ages of 6 and 18 as they take part in scouting activities. REPORT DOG FOULING HOTSPOTS North East Derbyshire District Council are launching a new campaign to try to tackle dog fouling hotspots and concerns in the District. The Council are urging residents to report dog fouling on pavements or paths so we can continue to target hotspots and take strong action against dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets. There is the possibility of a court fine of up to £1,000 for those not clearing up after their dogs. North East Derbyshire District Council Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Cllr Charlotte Cupit said, “We know that the majority of dog owners act responsibly and care for their communities. But, sadly a minority allow their dogs to foul and don’t clean up after them, or leave it hanging in trees, to the upset of local residents and communities. We have enforcement officers in place to deter, educate and catch offenders, and these officers are targeting known hotspots – and we’ve recently invested in strengthening the service and number of officers. But, the overall number of dog fouling reports to the Council is low so we’re launching this campaign to remind and urge residents to report dog fouling through our online form. The Council’s Streetscene team can also arrange for dog fouling to be cleaned away. We’re also working on new communications and campaigns to remind people to pick up after their dogs which we’ll be launching over the coming months.” If the Council catches people not clearing up after their dog or leaving bags of waste not in dog bins they will have to pay a £100 fixed penalty notice or face a court fine of up to £1,000. The Council can either catch people on site, or use CCTV or video footage to prosecute those breaking the law. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION On the morning of 9th June, Holmesfield Gardening Association members and friends set sail on a lovely smooth ride in an Ellanders coach for RHS Bridgewater. The Gardens were at their peak and the beautiful plants, layout and overall design made it a very enjoyable visit, so thank you to our Social Organiser, Hilary Olsen, for all her hard work in making our trip such a success. On Wednesday 22nd June we were due to enjoy a BBQ at the home of Hilary and Einar Olsen. On Wednesday 6th July at 6.30pm we will visit the gardens of Ann & Roger Hart at 3 Marstone Crescent, Totley. S17 4DG and Chris & Bev Blanksby’s at No.11. The cost is £4.00 per person and you will need your own transport. This visit had to be postponed because of Covid so we are pleased to finally be able to visit. The Annual Holmesfield Gardening Association Show will be held in Holmesfield Village Hall on Saturday 20th August and will be open to the public for viewing at 2.30pm. Free tea and biscuits will be served. Association members should bring exhibits at 9.30 am for judging at 11.00am. Categories include fruit, vegetables, flowers and domestic (baking jam and wine making). There is also a children’s class where they can create a funny object from a vegetable, make a miniature garden in a seed tray, or decorate three cup cakes. This section is open to non-members to encourage local children to be creative and take part. Bring along some small flowers in colours such as white, blue and yellow. Any foliage or grasses that remind you of seaside colours or textures. You could even bring small succulents. HOLMESFIELD YOUTH CLUB Glow! has now welcomed this years Y6 to our regular sessions and they’ve settled really well among our established group which is fab! We also wish to thank Holmesfield Local Market Committee for the donation of a new table-tennis table! We were very grateful to borrow one for a while but its super to have our own, thanks to all those who support the Local Market. As we head into the summer we have some fantastic activities planned, some sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. T. Pearson and some by NEDDC, but we need some equipment that you might have lurking in your shed to make it fun! If you have a length of guttering (approx 2m or a couple of shorter lengths), some rigid pipe approx 2.5-3cm diameter (need two of these about a metre long or so long) and some coloured wool (odds and ends of balls are fine), I’d be glad to take them off your hands. I’d also like a Connect 4 and Twister game. If you have one that you’re no longer using, please do get in touch! Young people and parents - keep your eyes peeled and your ears tuned for information about our summer programme! Glow! Youth Club is open to all local young people in Y7-13. TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES 14th & 15th July 2022, 08:00 to 16:00 each day: Horsleygate Lane (at a point adjacent Horsley Gate House) and Fox Lane between Horsleygate Road and Far Lane to facilitate telegraph pole renewal works. 8th to 10th August 2022, 08:00 to 16:00 each day: Horsleygate Lane (between a point 700 metres east of its junction with Horsleygate Road for a distance of 70m in a north easterly direction) to facilitate water apparatus installation works. Access will be maintained, whenever reasonably possible, on the affected length of road. The road will re-open as soon as the work is finished. This may be earlier than advertised. Derbyshire County Council apologises for any inconvenience caused while work takes place. Anyone needing further information should ring Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190. Each summer with the help of the district and borough councils, Derbyshire County Council carries out a maintenance programme on all the dual carriageways in the county. The work includes cutting the grass on the central reservations and at the sides of the roads, picking up litter, emptying the gullies and drains, fixing any potholes, and any other bits of maintenance work that need carrying out. Cabinet Member for Highways Assets and Transport, Councillor Kewal Singh Athwal, said “by bringing together different teams from the county council, and our district and borough partners to do this vital work we can be more efficient and not impact the travelling public too much. We don’t start this work until July so that we are kinder to nature by letting the grass grow a bit longer so that some native species are given longer to flower or seed. I hope you are all well and have enjoyed the recent Jubilee celebrations. The Holmesfield Village Society has had a really busy month! As part of our Platinum Jubilee celebrations, on Thursday 2nd June we delivered over 80 pieces of cake to local residents who had all been nominated by their friends or families. Huge thanks to Andrea Kilner of Kilner’s Cakes for baking the most amazing cakes (as always) and to our incredible delivery volunteers – Helen Pearson, Aoife Kenny, Elaine Liversidge and Andrea herself. Big smiles all round from so many people which was really lovely to see. We decorated the village with bunting on Monday 30th May – assisted by an army of volunteers who came out to help us – too numerous to mention, but massive thanks to you all – Holmesfield has looked fabulous during all the Jubilee celebrations. On Sunday 5th June we had planned a Big Jubilee Picnic on Holmesfield Village Green – much time, effort and energy was spent in getting everything ready for the big day. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas for us and at the 11th hour we had to revert to our ‘Plan B’ which was to hold the picnic in the Village Hall. We appreciate that this wasn’t ideal for everyone but having decided that the show must go on, we quickly revisited all our plans and had a wonderful afternoon.
The Reverend Ian Webb, despite being quite poorly, played God Save The Queen from the church tower at 1.00pm to get proceedings underway and then the wonderful Barry Fisher kept us entertained all afternoon with some great tunes and more than one rendition of Sweet Caroline! 30
Grown-ups and children alike turned up in their Jubilee outfits, many having baked cakes for the cake competition which was judged by our very own Andrea Kilner and her assistant Nell Taylor – there were some truly amazing entries. Many of the children there had their faces painted by the very talented Rebecca Spina and the kids were also kept occupied with air hockey, a pool table, indoor quoits and a giant Jenga set. It was a very special afternoon and I really hope that those of you that came along enjoyed it as much as Holmesfield Village Society did. There are so many people to thank for making this event possible – Reverend Ian Webb, Sarah Webb, Barry Fisher, Jonathan Chapman, John Stansfield, Steve Heald, Nell and Eva Taylor, Jimmy Pearson, Lucy Perry, Andrea Kilner and all of the Holmesfield Village Society Committee. The Holmesfield Village Society is a very small team of people, all of whom have full time jobs and busy lives, who help put together events like these in their limited spare time for the benefit and enjoyment of the whole village. We have had offers of help from a number of people who attended the Jubilee Picnic and we will be reaching out shortly to them. If anyone else feels that they are able to contribute some time, a spare pair of hands – even occasionally – or perhaps has some ideas for future events, please contact me directly or drop the team a line at holmesfieldvillage@gmail.com We are now looking ahead to Village Week at the beginning of July with a fun packed schedule planned including the scarecrow competition. Match News: The 2nd XI are still top of the league and pushing hard for promotion. Some very strong batting performances posting scores above 250 regularly make it very difficult for the opposition. Another big difference this year are the bowlers who are managing to take 10 wickets giving the team outright wins rather than the winning draws which became the norm last year. Everyone is chipping in with performances. The 1st XI continue to struggle in Division 2 but performances have been improving and we achieved a second win of the season away to bottom placed club Darley Abbey on 25th June. The team currently sits in 11th place but not far behind two teams above them. The junior teams are all performing very well with mixed results. Most of our players will have another year at their age group so this year is very much a development year for many. We currently have three players representing the club with Derbyshire. Albie Pearson in the U11s age group, Harry Welch in the U13s and Freddie Taraporewalla in the U15s. Congratulations to the boys, enjoy yourselves, the club are very proud of you! MAY 2022 WEATHER May’s weather, in numbers, is that the average temperature was 11.5°C which is half a degree warmer than normal. The warmest day was on the 14th when the highest temperature was 21.9°C. 36mm of rain fell during May and this is only half the normal rainfall. March, April and May were all relatively dry months with only about half what we might expect. I have noticed that the grass verges of the roadside and garden lawns are turning brown. The badgers have stopped digging into my lawn for bugs because the ground is so hard. I am writing this note on 7th June and we have had some rain over the last week but the soil is still very dry so some more rain would be good. This report is about the weather during May but I cannot resist noting that Sunday 5th June was the coldest June day that I have recorded and Look North suggested that it was their coldest June day on record. The wind was from the NE, the temperature only reached 9.6°C and there was also quite a lot of rain, so the Village ‘Big Jubilee Picnic’ had to be held indoors. Coronation day, 2nd June 1953, was also very cold and wet, with a maximum temperature of only 8°C in Birmingham, so maybe that was an even colder day in Holmesfield that year than this year. I recorded 261 hours of bright sunshine during May which is slightly more than I recorded last year. If any reader has solar panels fitted to their house, then they might be interested to know how much power the sun offers in Holmesfield. My weather station records the power of the sun every hour and I can tell you that over the whole of last year the average power was 101 Watts for every square metre of ground. Unfortunately, most solar panels only have a 20% efficiency at best, so only about 20 Watts per metre would be generated. This means that a solar panel of two square metres might have generated almost 350 units of electricity, with most of that being produced during the summer months. At the current unit cost of electricity at 28p – and rising – the solar panel would have generated £98 worth of electricity. Brian Brown

GEORGE STEPHENSON MEMORIAL George Stephenson lived and died at Tapton House near Chesterfield. In his retirement, he grew exotic plants and many other varieties in conjunction with Sir Joseph Paxton who was a good friend of his. Stephenson’s office overlooked Tapton Golf Course and Paxton planted a horse chestnut tree nearby. Tapton House became Tapton House Grammar School and last year, an old pupil of the school gathered some horse chestnut seeds and they all germinated. Two of these have grown very well and are planted in the village in memory of the railway pioneer. Other saplings have been planted in Barrow Hill Railway Centre and at Peak Rail at Darley Dale. We would like in due course to commemorate this important man by erecting a plinth, together with a plaque, so that he will be remembered in the locality. Roger Webb (Old Taptonian)

Meet in Totley Brook where the bridge to Woodthorpe Hall crosses the main footpath. Equipment provided but as this is a hands on event, you can bring your own but please wear wellies. HOW TO REPORT SCAM MESSAGES Fake emails and text messages are a common tactic used by cyber criminals, their goal is often to convince you to click a link. Once clicked, you may be sent to a dodgy website which could download viruses onto your computer, or steal your passwords and personal information. In order to try and convince you that their messages are legitimate, criminals will pretend to be someone you trust, or from some organisation you trust. This could be your Internet Service Provider (ISP), local council, even a friend in need. And they may contact you by phone call, email or text message. Reporting suspicious emails: If you have received an email which you’re not quite sure about, you can report it by forwarding the email to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service at: report@phishing.gov.uk As of 31st October 2021, the number of suspicious email reports stands at more than 8,100,000, with the removal of more than 67,000 scams and 124,000 URLs. Thank you for your continued support. *In a small number of cases, an email may not reach our service due to it already being widely recognised by spam detection services. The vast majority of reports do reach our system so please keep reporting any suspicious emails you receive. The story of how Chris became a photographer after losing the majority of his eyesight in Afghanistan back in 2007 and how landscape photography became his personal rehabilitation. Sunday 10th July, 10.00am to 3.00pm Summer Producers and Artisan Market A market with a difference – held in the medieval gallery and beautiful grounds of Dronfield’s famous Hall Barn and at the Peel Centre, the market will feature a varied array of local and regionally produced food, drink and crafts. There will also be children’s activities at this event. “We know people are looking for places to visit. We invite people to sample the very best of food, drink and artisan crafts as we aim to offer a variety of quality products from local traders and makers. We have stalls in the barn itself and outside in our grounds as well as at the Peel Centre which is just across the road from the barn. The location along with our popular coffee shop has all the ingredients of a great family day out and people really enjoy the atmosphere of this unique location”, said organiser Chris Griffiths. “The market also raises funds for the 600-year-old Barn, which is a community Heritage Centre managed by the Dronfield Heritage Trust a registered charity. It is at the heart of the town on the High Street and our aim is to ensure the building survives as a great local venue for years to come,” she added. HOLMESFIELD CHARITABLE TRUSTS The trustees of the Penny Acres Charitable Trusts are asking everyone if they know why we have our Trusts and who they are for ? We are very fortunate in Holmesfield to have three Charitable trusts which are open to application by anyone living in Holmesfield. The revenue for the Trusts comes from land donated in the 18th century on Cowley lane and later donations which are owned by the Charity Commission on behalf of the Penny Acres Charity. The Trust supports the ‘Educational Foundation‘ which is open to anyone age 25 or under who, or whose parents are residents in the village. Over a period of many years grants have been awarded for the purchase of books and more recently towards computers and sports equipment. The Trust receives regular applications and the Trustees are keen to encourage more applications to the ‘Relief in Need Charitable Trust’ and feel the old fashion Victorian wording of the Trust may be putting people off making an application. The remit of the Charity is to relieve hardship, need and distress – a very old fashioned way of saying that these days, life can be difficult as the cost of living is increasing. Anyone over 60 who is a resident of Holmesfield can apply and there is no means test applied. HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.
RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. A very recognisable building near the junction of Cartledge Lane and Main Road, Holmesfield – another lovely image from the lens of W. “Harry” Hewitt of Dronfield taken c.1910. Just visible is the triangle of land at the road junction. The distinctive metal window frames added a lot of character to the building prior to their replacement with sliding sash windows to increase the light entering the rooms.
