POLICE REPORT TO PARISH COUNCIL PCSO Jonathan Flower attended the May Parish Council meeting. He reported that there were links with the Glow! youth club run at the Church and that this was very positive. He was also pleased to report that the Neighbourhood Watch is also very pro-active. There had been a burglary reported in April and one in May. There is currently a trend for smaller cars being stolen and used for low level crime and then being dumped. With regards to the parking issues at the top of Cowley Lane, Derbyshire County Council are looking at putting yellow lines around the area and parking enforcement will look to issue tickets to offending vehicles. Derbyshire County Council are in the process of moving the bench outside Penny Acres School and once this is done, speed checks will commence at that location. There is some funding available for Smart Water. This is a unique liquid that can be used on property and if stolen can then be recovered and easily returned to the rightful owner. This will be advertised over social media.

DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM April crime figures: Burglary: 1, Public Order: 1, Violence against the person : 3. Over the last month, Dronfield Safer Neighbourhood Team have been engaging with the community and visitors to the area in relation to SNT Policing Priorities. During May we had our Op Sceptre Knife crime awareness week, which saw our team along with the Youth Engagement Team attend youth sessions do knife crime quizzes to raised awareness along with knife sweeps in public areas and knife amnesties too. This was carried out in conjunction with local youth groups and partner agencies. Dronfield SNT continued to visit residents in conjunction with North East Derbyshire Community Safety, delivering smart water to some residential properties across the town. The Team are also continuing to conduct home security surveys to residents that request them to make their home less appealing to unwanted visitors Top 3 issues raised to use through Derbyshire Alert/Talking in May. 1) Speeding / Hazardous Driving 2) Anti-Social Behaviour 3) Road Safety Issues

HAPPY AND GLORIOUS Unlike residents of many countries around the world, we in the UK do not get to choose our head of state; instead we get whoever happens to be next in line from the House of Windsor. The French have recently chosen Emmanuel Macron for a second term as their head of state and in late 2020 the Americans chose Joe Biden – both ordinary citizens chosen by their fellow citizens to be their representative, chosen to embody their country on the world stage. Our head of state, on the other hand, believes she has been chosen and set apart for the role by God. If we knew nothing of the character of Queen Elizabeth II this description might cause us to worry - “chosen by God? Who does she think she is?!” Yet what we know is that she has sought throughout her remarkable and long reign to act as an incredibly hard working and caring servant of her people. What does her reign tell us about the character of the God she believes she was chosen by? Jesus Christ came to serve as a humble king, the God of the universe, stooping down to wash his disciples’ feet and to walk the lonely hill to the Cross for us all. It is this God who has formed and shaped Her Majesty’s own ‘ministry’ and reign. As the Queen said in her 2016 Christmas Speech: “Billions of people now follow Christ’s teaching and find in him the guiding light for their lives. I am one of them because Christ’s example helps me see the value of doing small things with great love, whoever does them and whatever they themselves believe.” As our village this year celebrates the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we should give hearty thanks that we have been blessed to have such a person to be our head of state, to represent us on the world stage, and to embody all that makes our country great: not pomp and nationalism; but love and the serving of others. And perhaps we could also give thanks to God, for He has more than answered our National Anthem’s prayer:

God save our gracious Queen! Long live our noble Queen! God save the Queen! Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, God save the Queen. 17

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Another busy term draws to a close and what a term it has been! I must begin by saying how proud I have been of our Year 6 children during what has been a very stressful time for them. Each of them tackled their end of key Stage 2 SATs in their usual conscientious manner, doing so with confidence and enthusiasm. I have no doubt that their results will reflect their efforts. In more enjoyable news, we have continued to immerse our children in educational experiences both in and out of school. Our KS1 children took a visit to Conisbrough Castle to learn about how the Keep was the last form of defence. Most however, were just fascinated by the proposition of being a ‘Gong Scourer’. Our KS2 children, as part of their Tudor topic, visited Gainsborough Old Hall, learning about the different roles and responsibilities of those running the house, as well as cooking up a feast for King Henry VIII. If you go down to the woods today (well on a Wednesday), you’re sure of a big surprise! Our ‘new’ Cross Country club is proving very popular with about 50% of our children braving the woods each Wednesday, rain or shine, followed closely by a band of school staff. My thanks to Mrs Smith and to Qualitas for running this for me. Next Term is as busy as ever and I look forward to sharing more of our experiences with you. In the meantime, be safe and please do have a look at our school website for more of our news - www.pennyacres.derbyshire.sch.uk Kindest thoughts and prayers, Mr Ratcliffe – Executive Headteacher. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION The evening visit in May to three separate gardens on Melbourne Avenue was enjoyed by 17 members. All three gardens, although fairly small, were very impressive and their owners had put a lot of thought into the layout of the gardens. The variety of flowers, shrubs, trellising, trees and pristine lawns was commendable. Each garden had its own identity and members came away with plenty of ideas to try in their own gardens. The evening ended with refreshments at the Chairman’s garden. On Thursday 9th June, the Annual day trip to the RHS Gardens at Bridgewater will take place, details are on the advert in this month’s Parish Magazine. The cost is £15 for the coach which departs at 9.00am prompt from the centre of the village by the roundabout. The cost of entrance if you are not an RHS member is £8.50. Please contact our Social Secretary Hilary Olson on 0114 2890927 if you are interested in joining us. The next event on the calendar is the annual Barbecue, but this event is not open to non-members. On Wednesday 6th July, there will be a visit to the gardens of Beverly & Chris Blanksby and Ann & Roger Hart at Nos. 3 and 11 Marstone Crescent, Totley, S17 4DG. HOLMESFIELD FOOTPATHS AND BRIDLEWAYS SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT As ever we have been affected by the pandemic with some meetings having to be cancelled. A small amount of work has been carried out on the rights of way but our main item is a new illustrated book we are shortly to publish on the Footpaths and Bridleways in the parish. Roger Webb has been amazing, spending many hours on the book with several visits to the publishers in Sheffield. Dave Burgan has also made a huge contribution. Finally, many thanks to Mrs. Patricia Levitt for taking excellent minutes at our committee meetings.

REPORTING HGVS FLOUTING WEIGHT LIMIT A reminder that vehicles flouting the weight restrictions through the Parish can now be reported as traffic incidents on the Derbyshire Constabulary website: www.derbyshire.police.uk/ro/report/rti/rti-b/report-a-road-traffic-incident/ 27

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE SOCIETY

Hi Everyone – The long-awaited Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations have begun across the country. The Platinum Pudding has been chosen from hundreds of applications from around the nation and the Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations have taken place in Windsor with the Queen in attendance. By the time this article is published many of you will have decorated your houses in red, white and blue to get into the spirit of the celebrations. We are now looking for volunteers to decorate the public spaces around the village. See the timetable opposite for the meeting time and date. We will supply the bunting and if you can supply a helping hand that would be amazing. Just turn up on the 30th at 6pm, and we will point you in the right direction! The Village Society plan for the Jubilee Bank Holiday in Holmesfield, is to join in with the national “Big Jubilee Lunch” on Sunday 5th June. We will host “The Big Jubilee Picnic” on the Village Green on Woodside View between 1pm and 4pm. Everyone is invited to bring along a picnic to the Green, get dressed up and join in the fun and games planned for the afternoon. We are hoping it will be a lovely, chilled affair to round off the Queens Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend. Of course, parties in your own garden are brilliant too – however we really hope you will join in the spirit of the day with us all on the Village Green. This Jubilee is an important historical event too and we want to mark the occasion with a legacy that will last in the village for us all beyond 2022. With this in mind, we have approval to plant a tree in the Millennium Garden and erect a plaque. This will be a very special tree – it will be a Christmas tree! We all know how wonderful it is to have a beautiful tree in Holmesfield at Christmas and gather around it to sing carols. The tree will be put in place later this year when the conditions are right for planting and we will keep you all updated with the exact timings. In addition, this month the Village Society are delighted to let you know that we have been awarded £500 from the Feel Connected Project supporting the More Than One Day Fund. This is a great project to be involved with and will help fund the Jubilee activities in the village and also go towards the cost of our new sustainable Christmas tree. It’s also Village Week in July – in conjunction with a number of other groups in the village – we will be arranging and supporting a week of fun and activities in July, so watch this space for more details! There’s a lot of amazing things happening in the village at the moment, so please check out the timetable on the page opposite for the running order of events for the Jubilee and keep an eye on the Facebook page (see address below) for more details as we get nearer to the event. Please share the info with your friends, come along and join us and let’s have a brilliant Jubilee in Holmesfield! Big Love – Helen and the Village Society Team For more information or to contribute ideas; email us at holmesfieldvillage@gmail.com and always keep an eye on www.facebook.com/groups/holmesfield for event updates. #loveholmesfield 32

HOLMESFIELD YOUTH CLUB It’s been a busy month! The young people of Holmesfield have enjoyed a fantastic climbing wall and KMX Karts courtesy of Extreme Wheels Roadshow (EWR) this last month. We are very grateful to the Parish Council and Holmesfield Chapel Lands Trust for allowing us to use their car parks for these fabulous activities. We have very much enjoyed the activities and the expertise that the EWR team have brought since January and will miss them after their last session with us at the end of May. Thanks also to the North East Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership for investing in Glow by funding EWR. Derbyshire Police Youth Engagement team and local policing team visited us to talk about knife crime and how we can avoid getting involved. We had a great discussion!

After half term (6th June) those young people currently in year 6 will be welcome to join Glow! It’s a great opportunity for them to meet some of the older children in the village that already go to several secondary schools locally and further afield. No need to let us know, just turn up with your emergency contact details. It’s free to come in and there is a cash-only tuck shop. This is a drop-in activity so your child is free to leave the building during the session. We will be open from 7.00 - 8.30pm each Monday during term time. We try very hard to be an inclusive youth group and welcome suggestions from young people themselves about what they would like to do. Any questions or suggestions please do be in touch. We still need some occasional volunteers. We will try to meet every week until the summer but from September unless we have some more volunteers we will have to meet fortnightly. Please be in touch if you’d like to talk about it. Sarah and the Glow! team : sarah@webbhome.co.uk 37

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

Match News: As expected, the 1st XI have found it difficult in Division 2 since gaining promotion last year. Our first game at Quarndon was disappointing with The Vill being bowled out for 134, our opponents knocking the runs off in just 32 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. The only highlights being 51 from Richard Martin and a good spell from Clinton Nobrega who finished with figures of 10 overs, 2 for 34. Our second game, at home against Clowne, proved more competitive although the result turned out to be the same. Clowne batted first and were held initially by some fantastic bowling from Nick Crapper and Clinton Nobrega. Initial spells of 1 for 9 and 2 for 20 respectively left the opposition on 35 for 3 after 20 overs. Unfortunately, we let the initiative get away and their innings closed on 260 for 6. Holmesfield got off to a good start with Brent Doubell scoring a rapid 33 before being out to an excellent catch. Meanwhile, captain Jimmy Pearson scored steadily at the other end despite being hampered by a painful knee. The total looked within reach for most of the innings with the home team reaching 193 before the loss of the third wicket. Wickets started to fall more regularly and eventually we fell 10 runs short despite Jimmy Pearson finishing not out on 107, his inability to take quick singles due to the injury, proving the difference in the end. Our only win to date came the following week when we emphatically beat Lullington on their home ground. Holmesfield reached 211 and then bowled out the home team for 138. Highlights were Brent Doubell 48, Jimmy Pearson 69 and Matt Daft 45. Mayank Sharma, who had missed the opening two games, produced an excellent spell of 4 for 21 of 10 overs. He was well supported by Max Wood who finished with figures of 4 for 41 of 9 overs. Another good performance from one of our up-and-coming juniors. In the meantime the 2nd XI have had a good start to the season with a win and two winning draws. We also got full points from the Chesterfield game as they could not fulfil the fixture. Highlights so far are 50s from Tony Brown, Will Martin and Neil Pearson, as well an excellent 100 from Russ Parker in the first match. Currently the 1st team sit 8th in Division 2, 9 points clear of the relegation spots, whilst the 2nd team are currently top of Division 9, 15 points clear of second place. On a positive note we have had an issue with availability at the beginning of the season with many 1st XI players being unavailable for one reason or another. Hopefully as they return the team will be strengthened and results will improve. We have already had 35 different players this season in just 7 games! New Sponsors: We are pleased to announce that we have two new sponsors, ECA Business Energy and Amvia. ECA Business Energy are a Dronfield based energy consultancy that has supported businesses throughout the UK for over 36 years. 39

APRIL 2022 WEATHER You probably do not need me to tell you that April was a dry month! There were only five days when we had any significant amount of rain and I recorded only 26mm – about one inch – of rain over the whole month. On average, April is actually the driest month in my records which started in 2002, but 26mm is less than half of what we can usually expect. I say ‘usually expect’ but April is a very unpredictable month in terms of rainfall. 176mm of rain fell in April 2012 but in April 2011 only 5mm fell. If you want dry weather for a planned event, then April is a very risky month to choose. There are good and bad consequences of dry weather. Gardeners always like regular rainfall but I noticed that the heavy traffic through the village at the weekends was evidence that people like to go out ‘into Derbyshire’ in dry sunny weather. The lack of rain has also made the footpaths around Holmesfield much easier underfoot as the mud has almost all dried up. April was dry, as were January and March this year, but February was so very wet that overall we have had our normally expected rainfall over the first four months of the year. The Met Office does not seem to have a definition for a drought but less than 50% of the expected rainfall over three months is often used. At the moment a drought does not seem very likely. I have not driven past Ladybower reservoirs recently but they should still be reasonably full. Of course, what one country calls a drought will not be the same as another. In the Sahel region of Libya, a drought is only recognised after two years without any measurable rainfall. The UK would be in trouble if we had no rain for two years! Even though April was fairly dry it was slightly colder than normal and the hours of sunshine were about average. Our highest temperature was less than 20°C – the maximum being 18.9°C at 2pm on Saturday 16th April. I recorded some air frost during the first half of the month but nothing afterwards. Brian Brown

HOLMESFIELD CHARITABLE TRUSTS The trustees of the Penny Acres Charitable Trusts are asking everyone if they know why we have our Trusts and who they are for ? We are very fortunate in Holmesfield to have three Charitable trusts which are open to application by anyone living in Holmesfield. The revenue for the Trusts comes from land donated in the 18th century on Cowley lane and later donations which are owned by the Charity Commission on behalf of the Penny Acres Charity. The Trust supports the ‘Educational Foundation‘ which is open to anyone age 25 or under who, or whose parents are residents in the village. Over a period of many years grants have been awarded for the purchase of books and more recently towards computers and sports equipment. The Trust receives regular applications and the Trustees are keen to encourage more applications to the ‘Relief in Need Charitable Trust’ and feel the old fashion Victorian wording of the Trust may be putting people off making an application. The remit of the Charity is to relieve hardship, need and distress – a very old fashioned way of saying that these days, life can be difficult as the cost of living is increasing. Anyone over 60 who is a resident of Holmesfield can apply and there is no means test applied. For further information, please contact the clerk to the charities: Mrs Geraldine Austen on 0114 289 0686. All applications are dealt with in strict confidence

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). 55

Another rare image from the lens of W. “Harry” Hewitt of Dronfield taken c.1910. This is probably a unique record of the top of Horsleygate Lane where it joins Main Road which was improved in 1781 as part of the Greenhill to Calver Turnpike road. Whilst the left half of this row of terraced houses survive to this day, those on the right have long been demolished and the site redeveloped c.1959. Nevertheless this photograph offers a rare view of these dwellings.
