POLICE REPORT TO PARISH COUNCIL PCSO Flower sent a written report to the May Parish Council meeting regarding the incidents for April 2021 as follows: Assault: 1 (1 up from last month), Theft: 0 (1 down from last month), Criminal Damage: 1 (same as last month), Burglary: 0 (1 down from last month), Harassment: 0 (1 down from last month), Public Order Offence: 0 (3 down from last month), Drugs related: 0 (1 down from last month). It’s positive to see the speed watch team have been out and about have caught a significant number of vehicles recently. Dronfield SNT has also been doing some speed awareness work with school which has been well received and further will also follow. While we are in the summer months its important to remain vigilant and ensure you don’t leave your property, vehicles and treasured possessions as an easy target for thieves. Please take note of the following advice as restrictions and activities start to lift as you spend more time away from the home.
Make your home a difficult target
Inside your home • Make it difficult for your valuables to be taken. • Check who’s at the door and don’t open it if you feel anxious. • Leave some lights on or consider using plug timers if it will be dark before you get home. • Store keys, including your car keys, out of sight and away from the front door area. • Hide wallets, identity cards, passports and cash. • Secure bikes by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed or garage. • Mark or etch your property with your postcode, house, flat number or the first three letters of your house name. • Take photographs of your valuable items such as jewellery. • Register items with serial numbers such as mobile phones, games consoles, bikes and watches at: www.immobilise.com Outside your home • Install good outside lighting. • Scale back hedges or fences that prevent people seeing your home. • Lock doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you are in the garden. • Install a burglar alarm that can be seen on the outside of your property. • Cancel milk or other deliveries if you are planning on being away from home. • Ask a neighbour, friend or relative to keep an eye on your property if you are going away. • Keep ladders and gardening tools locked away to prevent them being used to gain entry to your home. VACANCY ON THE PARISH COUNCIL We were saddened to receive the resignation of Michael Banks. He is thanked for his service to the Parish Council and wish him well in his role as church warden. The vacancy has been notified to NEDDC and advertised as per the procedure and we have been granted permission to co-opt a new member on to the Council. The role of a Councillor is to work with the Council to serve the community. Bringing local issues to the attention of the Council and help to make decisions on behalf of the local community. Meetings are held in the Village Hall on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm. HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP MILLERS DALE WALK On Wednesday 21st July, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Angler’s Rest (SK178SN) in Millers Dale. We will walk along the Monsal trail as far as Cressbrook Mill, then back along a track and a minor road to the pub for lunch (optional). The walk is 4 miles long and very flat. If you would like to come just turn up on the day. The cost of the walk is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. THE WEDDING MARCH It’s wedding season and we are delighted to say that so far five couples are booked in to tie the knot at St. Swithin’s this summer. Bless them they’ve each faced such uncertainty and delays in their wedding arrangements because of Covid. The government has now kindly lifted some restrictions but we are still very limited by social distancing and not being allowed to sing. Hopefully that will change soon because younger generations have made enormous sacrifices to protect older and vulnerable people in this crisis and, with these groups now fully vaccinated, it is time for young folk to be given the freedom to live their best years to the full. Marriage is a social contract that goes beyond religious definitions. Many different societies down the years have recognised that the coming together of two people to form a new family unit is something that needs to be marked and celebrated by the wider families and society. Some say that marriage is an outmoded patriarchal institution and that all we need is a piece of paper, a contract, to make sure each partner’s legal position is protected. I must admit I felt that way before I became a Christian in my mid-twenties, and I respect those who now hold that view. But after getting married myself shortly after coming to faith, and now, having officiated at many weddings, I am increasingly convinced that marriage is a good thing, which we should celebrate. As the words of the Church’s marriage service put it, “Marriage is a sign of unity and loyalty which all should uphold and honour. It enriches society and strengthens community. No one should enter into it lightly or selfishly but reverently and responsibly in the sight of almighty God.” In an increasingly individualistic culture, marriage takes the courageous risk of giving yourself away to another, “for better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health; to love and to cherish, til death us do part.” But the flip side is you then get to spend a (hopefully happy!) lifetime discovering the gift of receiving the same from your partner. Of course not all marriages work out and we should support those who are struggling in difficult relationships. But my hope and prayer for all those who are married this summer is that the new sparkly rings on their fingers may indeed be enduring symbols of unending love and faithfulness, reminding them of the vow and covenant made on their wedding day. HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Dear friends of Penny Acres Primary School, As another very busy term gets underway, we are making the most of the better weather and the fact we can continue our programme of school visits and visitors to school. Our KS2 children will soon be experiencing a virtual rainforest via a class set of virtual headsets. The experience promises to immerse the children in the tree tops and the forest floor, in turn enhancing the children’s knowledge of their current topic, vanishing rainforests. Our KS1 children will soon be visiting Yorkshire Wildlife Park, looking at changes in nature and enjoying being able to see all of the animals. This term has also seen the installation of a fabulous set of outdoor exercise equipment on our playground. In our drive to improve the health of our children the installation promises to keep our children active during breaktimes, lunchtimes, and during our outdoor sessions. It has been a big hit already and is getting plenty of use! Keep an eye out for some very active children as you pass school. As always, I’d like to thank the school community for their continued support during these difficult times. We are fortunate in that our children remain happy and healthy. Long may that continue! HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION Despite our best efforts we will still be under Covid restrictions in July but we can still meet socially distanced and up to press we are still expecting our speaker on 7th July to be Roger Hart talking of “Gardening in Lockdown”. On 4th August our Speaker will be Dr. Bull speaking on the subject of “The Flora and Fauna of a Peak District Garden in Lockdown and its Vicinity”. Also in August, on the 21st August we will hold our Annual Horticultural Show at Holmesfield Village Hall. There will be exhibits of vegetables, fruit plus flowers and foliage. There will also be exhibits of baking and preserves including a special section for children – who can create a miniature garden in a seed tray, decorate 3 cup cakes or make a funny object from fruit and vegetables. These will brought by members or members’ children in the morning and judged. There are cups to be won !! Everyone, including non-members, are welcome to come and look at the produce and view the winners after 2.30pm. Annual membership of Holmesfield Gardening Association is £12.50 and can be paid at any meeting which are held at Holmesfield Village Hall from 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of the month unless stated otherwise. Until we are released from lockdown it will be necessary to check with our social organiser, Hilary Olsen on 01142 890279 to ensure a seat as we will be socially distanced for the time being. NEW WEEKEND SUMMER BUS SERVICE The Hope Valley Explorer (route No. H1) is a new bus service that runs on Saturdays and Sundays only from 24th July until 30th October shuttling visitors between several Peak District tourist destinations. Originating in Chesterfield, one bus will pick up passengers along the way at Millthorpe (09.27) and Owler Bar (09.32). There is an hourly shuttle between Derwent Dams and Mam Tor calling at Yorkshire Bridge, Bamford, Hope and Castleton. The final shuttle departs Castleton bus station at 17.37 and continues to Chesterfield dropping off at Owler Bar (18.04) and Millthorpe (18.09). Each bus can carry 2 x bikes on the back so you can adventure further. MOBILE LIBRARY The county’s mobile library service is operating again on a 4-weekly cycle. The mobile library will be at 6 Park Rise, Holmesfield between 10.00am and 10.30am on Monday 12th July. The service will operate a `book and borrow’ system, which means you will need to phone 01629 533464 in advance to book an appointment and you will be able to pick up a maximum of 10 books. Appointment times will last 5 minutes – and for the time being – you will not be able to select your own books by stepping onto the vehicle. Instead, you will be asked what type of books you like reading and a selection will be made for you so you can pick them up at your allotted time. All returned books will be quarantined for 72 hours and you will need to bring your own bag to pick up your books.

HOLMESFIELD COMMUNITY NETWORK UPDATE Its nearly July, hard to believe this time last year we were looking forward to coming out of lockdown! We are really hoping that despite the fact that life has pretty much returned to normal, that you all will continue to support some of the activities that we started last year.
Holmesfield Festival Timings
Whilst there were a number of activities discussed for the Festival week, the reality is we didn’t get enough volunteers to be able to support them all, but there are quite a few things happening in July. Children’s Well Dressing – Millennium Gardens Preparations for the creation of the Well Dressing start on Wednesday 7th July until Thursday 15th July. The Well Dressing will be on display until from Friday 16th July until Saturday 24th July. See advert. Scarecrow Competition – Start building from 9th July, Judging 16th – 24th July Last year, the village really came to life with some very talented people creating scarecrow masterpieces. It would be great to see your creations again and to see them out for the weeks that the other activities are happening. Classes are: Pop Stars Life after lockdown Best Children’s Best Overall. Holmesfield Local Market – Saturday 17th July The market has been well subscribed. There are lots of familiar faces and quiet a few new businesses. Bags, plants, bread, cakes, paintings, woodwork, pies, gins, beers plus lots more. Please come and support this great market. All profits made from the management of the market are used to support activities in the village via the Holmesfield Village Charitable Trust which has just purchased bunting that will be used to decorate the village during the 2 weeks. Village Boundary Walk & BYO Picnic at Woodthorpe Hall – Sunday 18th July A fab new addition – Robin Greetham will be organising a walk from the Millennium Garden that will follow part of the village boundary, and conclude at Woodthorpe Hall. If you didn’t want to join the full walk, you could walk from the village down through the woods to Woodthorpe. BYO (bring your own) Picnic time 2.00-5:30pm. Pack yourself and your group a picnic – teas, coffees and soft drinks will be available at the Hall. Special thanks to Dick & Sue Shepley for hosting this event. MAY 2021 WEATHER When I wrote my last report in early May I remarked that, even though April had been very dry, it was actually raining heavily at the time of my writing. Well it continued that way and it rained on 23 days during May. There were a few very wet days and in total I recorded 137mm, about double the normal rainfall for May. It was also a much colder month than normal. The average temperature was 9.2°C which is two degrees below normal. As a result, our garden seemed to make the decision that spring was ‘a long time coming’, winter was still around so the plants decided not to grow. All this changed during the last week of the month when the sun started to shine and everything began to come alive again. During May 2020 there were eleven days when the temperature went above 20°C but this year there were only two such days and these were right at the end of the month. In total I recorded 160 hours of bright sunshine this May as opposed to 237 hours in May last year. I thought that the difference might be greater than that, as May last year appeared to be very sunny. However, the last five days of the month were very sunny, with more than eight hours each day, whereas the first twenty-six days were fairly miserable with only four hours on average each day. So it was a fairly abysmal spring but what will summer bring? As I write this note the sun is shining and the temperature is 21°C. We are on the edge of a large anticyclone centred on the Azores in mid-Atlantic, and this usually means that the weather will be good for a while. 1975 and 1996 are often quoted as years when dreadful springs were followed by very warm summers. Nick Wheat recalled a Derbyshire county cricket match being called off in Buxton on 2nd June 1975 when an inch of snow fell, before a long hot summer and drought. 2013 was similar in that the first six months of the year were much colder than average but July and August were lovely with about 400 hours of bright sunshine. I haven’t quoted Flanders and Swann for a while. They sang ‘Farmers fear unkindly May, frost by night and hail by day’. They were right this May – we had the ground covered by hail on the 11th. For June they sang ‘June just rains and never stops, Thirty days and spoils the crops’ and for July ‘In July the sun is hot, is it shining? No it’s not!’. We have to hope that they were only joking. The club is going from strength to strength with a great win for the 1st XI against top of the league Marehay. Holmesfield batted first scoring 232 all out with Brent Doubell hitting 106. The visitors lost both openers for 0 to Mayank Sharma, rallying to 119 before the loss of their third wicket. Steady bowling saw Marehay falling 9 runs short on 223 all out, Mayank finishing with 4-24 off 10 overs. Prior to last week’s game, the 1st XI had won against Matlock and lost to Chesterfield at Queens Park in a very tight game despite being bowled out for 91, Chesterfield ending up on 92 for the loss of 9 wickets. Currently the league table looks like this: 1st XI –League Table Ironically the only 2 games we have lost are to Hundall and West Hallam White Rose 1st XI 150 Pts Chesterfield who are sitting towards the bottom of the table. Holmesfield 1st XI 142 Pts Marehay 2nd XI 142 Pts Meanwhile, the 2nd XI suffered a heavy defeat to Calow who Darley Dale 1st XI 135 Pts Nutbrook 1st XI 130 Pts are well ahead in the league and deservedly so. Holmesfield reached 205-6 (Russ Parker 56, Louis Bolsover 43). Ashover finished on 181-6. The game saw a good opening stand from Russ Parker and Louis Bolsover, Louis falling just short of his maiden half century. A good bowling and fielding performance saw us through to yet another winning draw. We must mention Clint Nobrega who led the bowling attack and Harry Welsh who kept wicket for the full 40 overs, that’s no mean feat for a 13 year old. Participation Following on from last month’s comments regarding high levels of membership for the club we can now report the success of the first weeks ‘All Stars’ session for 5 to 9 Year olds which saw around 40 children participating. The session was led by Mick Holmes with help from Sid Crapper and Ed Green among others. The atmosphere on the night was magic with Mick leading the children through the session like the Pied Piper. Feedback from parents has been fantastic. This following was sent to the ‘All Stars’ organisation and passed onto us: ‘Hi All Stars, Holmesfield coaches, First session for Thomas and Jack last night. Our ladies play a double header against Blyth and Newark on 4th July, please come down and support us. We are staging a ladies cricket festival on Sunday 25th July. This is open to everybody and no previous experience is required. The day will see various teams play against each other with a view to introducing as many people as possible to the fun of softball cricket. We are looking to encourage as many ladies to participate as possible, either within our team or as part of their own team / group of friends. Please let me know if you are interested in playing or entering a team, all ages welcome. All equipment is provided on the day so all you need to do is come along. As well as the matches we will be providing games and entertainment on the day for all the family. Food and drink will be available on the day.

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB (CONT.) There have been several teams from each age group entered into the North Derbyshire Youth leagues. The U15s have joined forces together with Clowne Cricket Club U15s resulting in them reaching the Cup Final last week in a thrilling match away at Hathersage. Many of our young cricketers have now spent several years at the club and it is lovely to see them grow and develop year on year. This season has also seen several junior players make their debut appearances in both our 1st and 2nd XI senior teams. The club welcomes players from age 5 upwards with little or no experience. Thank you again to everyone that has volunteered in any way to ensure the season runs smoothly. Annual Vicar’s XI match The annual Holmesfield CC v Vicar’s XI will take place on Thursday 22nd July, starting at 6.00pm - please come along and join in the fun. RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!
HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. “Lovers Walk” is a name that may have long since disappeared from general use but the timeless location is instantly recognisable as the narrowest stretch of Cowley Lane from Cowley Bottom heading up the hill towards Hill Top in Dronfield c.1910. The initials ‘WHH” indicates that this photograph was taken by Walter “Harry” Hewitt who worked at Lucas’s works on Dronfield bottom and supplemented his income with his prolific photography of local landmarks, general views and notable events.
