PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Wednesday 9th June 2021 in Holmesfield Village Hall on Vicarage Close.
POLICE REPORT TO PARISH COUNCIL PCSO Flower sent a written report to the April Parish Council meeting regarding the incidents for April 2021 as follows: Theft - 0 (1 down from last month) : Criminal damage - 0 (0 down from last month) : Burglary – 0 (1 down from last month) : Harassment – 0 (1 down from last month) : Public Order Offence – 4 (3 up from last month) : Drug related – 0 (1 down from last month). The 4 public order offences were in relation to protests at hunt related activities. Speed Watch is now able to resume and more volunteers are sought; there will be some work with children at Penny Acres School later in the year. Unauthorised use of the football field is being reported and dealt with, crowds of up to 40 are being dispersed for gathering and breaking covid rules, underage drinking and littering. DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM Crime figures for April 2021 - 4 crimes reported Theft: 0 (–1) Criminal Damage 0 – Burglary: 0 (–1) – Harassment: 0 (–1) – Public Order: 4 (+3) – Drugs: 0 (–1) The increase in public order incidents are all relating to the same incident but as you can see the main trend of other crimes is down on the previous month. Dronfield SNT would like to remind people not to leave valuables on show in their vehicles. Recently there has been a number of incidents across North East Derbyshire including sat navs or other computer devices which are particularly tempting for thieves. It has also been noted a lot of Seat cars in particular are being targeted. If you would like any further advice, please contact us. We are also happy to report that we have been involved with local community during national road safety week which ran 16th to 23rd May 2021. We have also worked with Mr Ratcliffe and the teachers and pupils from Penny acres School. They were involved in speed checks and handing out leaflets made by the children to remind people about their driving behaviour. This event was a real success because they have ongoing concerns around speeding and road safety. Over 30 vehicles were caught speeding and a number of cars stopped and given suitable advice about speeding and given road safety from the children at the school. Speed checks were also carried out as well in Barlow and Unstone in conjunction with the corresponding Speedwatch schemes which are regularly doing sessions to remind people about their driving behaviour and impact on the community safety. Dronfield SNT also continue to do work with local schools about parking concerns and continue to do parking patrols at pick up and drop off times and work closely with other agencies such as parking enforcement and local councils. RAISING THE FLAG Last week I had the great privilege of showing a very special guest around St. Swithin’s. Young Tommy must only be about three years old but he’s taken a particular interest in the church. His family frequently drives past the church and Tommy has become captivated by the flag fluttering on top of the church tower. A few weeks ago Tommy was shocked to notice the flag had disappeared! So his mum got in touch and we arranged to meet at church. I explained that the Union Jack (or Union Flag) had been taken down at the request of Mrs Eardley who wanted the St. George’s Flag up for Rev. William’s funeral. So Tommy, his sister and parents all took a tour of the church. We started in our fabulous church hall (a great venue for your events!). By a wonderful coincidence there were various ride-on toys in one corner; they’d been cleaned ready for our Toddler Group starting afresh in the Church Hall from 10th June. After playing on the toys Tommy and the family came into the church. Gasp! There at the end of the chancel hung a wonderful Union Jack. We then went up the stairs to the gallery and I opened the loft hatch to show Tommy where our brave ‘flag-man’ – Andy – climbs to access the Tower and change the flags. It was a bit dangerous for Tommy to go up the ladder but there was another surprise in store. What was that long rope hanging from the tower ceiling? Tommy, with a bit of help from daddy, got to ring the church bell - wow! What a fabulous noise! When Tommy’s a bit older I’d be glad to tell him about the meaning in the design of these flags. The Union Jack is made up of three crosses: the cross of St. George (England), the white saltire (cross) of St Andrew (Scotland) and the red saltire of St. Patrick (Ireland). Each of these saints have interesting stories to tell... The mythical story of St. George and the Dragon might be a good one to tell your little ones (although George was a real person who had no link whatsoever with England!). These crosses and the saints they recall should lead us to peace and friendship with others. For they all point to the Cross of Christ, that great place of peace and reconciliation available to us all. Every blessing, Rev. Ian. 15

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Dear friends of Penny Acres Primary School, As we begin to settle to the new ‘normal’, we are thankful that our wonderful little school continues to be the hive of activity it always has been. Our Infant class have been learning all about change. They have visited the woods to learn about the seasons and have recently cared for a batch of eggs resulting in the successful hatching of nine chicks. So confident are our children in the care of the chicks, we have decided to keep six of the females and are busy preparing our coop and run. The ‘Kardashihens’, as they’ve been named, are growing fast and we look forward to being able to offer ‘Penny Acres Primary School Eggs’ in the near future. My thanks to our local community for helping us get the information and resources we need for such a venture. My sincere thanks to the Dronfield SNT for joining us at my wonderful school on Monday 17th May. During the afternoon, at least 30 people were caught speeding outside of school. As Headteacher, it not only saddens but frightens me just how fast some cars and motorbikes pass the school. As they always do, the children did me proud, handing out speed awareness posters they’d designed in the hope that it would get those drivers caught to think a little more carefully about their speed in the future. Our Juniors have recently spent three days taking part in outdoor pursuit activities at Whitehall Education Centre. Activities such as canoeing, abseiling, zip lines, rock scrambling and stream scrambling were thoroughly enjoyed and were a welcome break from the limitations of ‘lock down’. Although we weren’t allowed to stay overnight, the extra activities in the day certainly made up for it and left the children, and staff, exhausted! As we move into the final Summer Term, we look forward to visits to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Rainforest Escape Rooms, Rainforest VR experiences, welcoming our new starters for a settling in picnic on the 7th July, some sort of sports day, and of course, a visit out for our Y6 children before they head off to start their Secondary School journeys. MOBILE LIBRARY The county’s mobile library service is operating again on a 4-weekly cycle. The mobile library will be at 6 Park Rise, Holmesfield between 10.00am and 10.30am on Mondays 14th June and 12th July. The service will operate a `book and borrow’ system, which means you will need to phone 01629 533464 in advance to book an appointment and you will be able to pick up a maximum of 10 books. Appointment times will last 5 minutes – and for the time being – you will not be able to select your own books by stepping onto the vehicle. Instead, you will be asked what type of books you like reading and a selection will be made for you so you can pick them up at your allotted time. All returned books will be quarantined for 72 hours and you will need to bring your own bag to pick up your books.

HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP EDALE WALK On Wednesday 23rd June, Robin Greetham will lead a walk near Edale. We will meet at 10.00am. in the main car park (please don’t pay) which is at the entrance to the village. We will then go in convoy to a small non-pay car park near Barber Booth where we will start the walk. The walk takes us on the track to Jacob’s Ladder where the scenery is magnificent. Lunch (optional) is at the Rambler Inn in Edale. It is a linear walk so you can turn around whenever you wish. If you would like to come just turn up on the day but check with Robin before hand to make sure the walk is still going ahead as these are very uncertain times. TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES Horsleygate Lane, Holmesfield is due to be closed from 7am on 1st June to 4pm on 3rd June between its junction with B6054 Main Road for a distance of 120 metres in a south-westerly direction to facilitate water apparatus renewal works. The advertised diversion route is via Millthorpe Lane. Unthank Lane, Holmesfield between its junction with Horsleygate Road to a point adjacent Unthank Hall Farm is due to be closed on 7th July between 7:30am and 5:00pm to facilitate tree works. The advertised diversion route is via Far Lane, Fox Lane and Horsleygate Road. Cowley Lane (near the junction with Gosforth Lane at Hill Top) is due to be closed from 8am on 23rd August to 5pm on 25th August to facilitate repairs by Severn Trent Water. Access will be maintained, whenever reasonably possible, on the affected lengths of road which will re-open as soon as the work is finished which may be earlier than advertised. Meanwhile, delays may be experienced until 3rd June at the junction of Carr Lane and Holmesfield Road and until 15th June at Northern Common, Dronfield Woodhouse due to temporary traffic light control in connection with refurbishment and replacement work on the electricity network by Northern Powergrid. HELEN O’GRADY DRAMA ACADEMY CLASS The first sessions took place on April 23rd, running a class for primary aged students from 4.15pm to 5.15pm and for secondary aged students from 5.15pm to 6.15pm. Nick Chadwin opened the first Helen O’Grady Drama Academy class in Sheffield in September 2003 but had never been in Holmesfield before. Nick commented that “the hall is wonderful and is just right for their sessions which focus on confidence, communication and socialisation. After a year of running virtual sessions over Zoom it is great to let people know that real face to face drama is available in Holmesfield!” Whilst it would be quite difficult for new members to join in the shows at this stage, new recruits will be sought for August and September. 27

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION As we move away from lockdown, our garden visits and social organiser, Hilary Olsen, is working hard to rearrange our programme of evening talks and visits. Our first meeting for a talk is on 7th of July. Roger Hart will be giving a talk entitled “Gardening in Lockdown“; the second is on 4th August when Peter Bull will be will be giving a talk entitled “The Flora and Fauna of a Peak District Garden and its vicinity in Lockdown”. All out meetings take place at Holmesfield Village Hall on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm. It is not clear if social distancing will be necessary, but please check if you are unsure by ringing Hilary on 0114 289 0927. The Garden Association show will take place on 21st August during the day. Entries of fruit, vegetables, house plants and special categories such as the children’s section plus delicious baking are put in the show by members (annual membership is £12.50) and judged – best in show wins the cup! After lunch everyone is welcome to come and view the produce. Just a quick note to clarify who are the kind donors to the wild flower project. The Parish Council have contributed by sending funds to the Village Society who then supported the Holmesfield Garden Association by giving a donation for seeds. The Holmesfield Community Support Group donate funds for the project via its charitable trust but they have themselves also purchased seed to dispense around the village as part of their work to support the villagers. I hope you are all looking forward to restarting our meetings after such a long absence, and to enjoying talking about gardens again. Frances Webb
HOLMESFIELD FOOTPATHS AND BRIDLEWAYS SOCIETY Like many societies we have had a difficult year. However a lot of work and expense has been carried out on the bridleway in Kitchen Wood. It is very well used and was extremely muddy in places. Work has also been carried out on the path from Cowley Hall to Cartledge, a finger post on Brindwoodgate and another finger post at Cowley Hall. A big thank-you to Mike Hastings for his service over many years. He has now moved out of the village and finds it difficult to attend our meetings. A further thank-you to our secretary, Pat Levitt, who is as ever very efficient. Roger Webb has put an enormous number of hours into a book about the rights of way in the village and it should be published later in the year. HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE Holmesfield historically organised a village festival, but over the years, people moved on, volunteers changed and as time passed, the festival come to halt. After 18 months of cancelled activities and change of plans for most, we thought it might be a good idea if we pulled some of our societies together to create an ‘Out of Lockdown Holmesfield Summer Festival’. At the moment, we are in the throws of creating the plans, and have engaged with the Holmesfield Village Society, the cricket club and the Local Market Team (Holmesfield Village Charitable Trust) but we really want to hear from all of the societies in the village who would like to be involved. The plan is to run a Holmesfield Summer Festival from Saturday 17th July to Saturday 24th July. The local market will open the week on Saturday 17th July. During the week there will be a range of activities happening including the annual Holmesfield v Vicar’s XI cricket match and BBQ on Thursday 22nd July, (all invited... more info to follow on social media and posters.) We are holding a meeting to start organising the festival on Tuesday 1st June in the Angel Inn at 8pm. We are encouraging other village societies to get involved, so contact us at holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com if you or your society wishes to get involved. Or just turn up on the 1st. Last year the well dressings had to be cancelled due to Covid. This usually takes place during the 2nd week in July. The ladies who organise the Children’s Well would like to appeal to new volunteers who would be interested in learning this skill. It only requires a few hours of a person’s time over one week in the year. The work can be done at different times of the days to fit in with busy lives. This is a historic tradition in Derbyshire and something all ages should appreciate and take the opportunity to engage with. So why not get a few friends together and join the team. TO ALL DOG OWNERS Dog fouling issues are the worst they have ever been in Holmesfield. Most people take poo bags out with them and remove it, but others give all dog owners a bad name by leaving it. The irresponsible ones do not use poo bags, they go out under the cover of darkness and think picking it up does not apply to them. Some go out in broad daylight and leave a mess on footpaths used by the children on their way to school. It is not in one particular place but in several areas in the village. The small minority of dog owners who do not clean up after their dog are putting children at risk of serious illness. It is not nice to step in it, push a wheelchair through it, drive a mobility scooter through it or worse fall in it. REMINDER: It is against the law to allow a dog to foul in a public place and make no attempt to clean it up. The maximum penalty from a criminal prosecution in a court may be £1,000. APRIL 2021 WEATHER April this year set a few weather records. Firstly, it was one of the driest Aprils on record. I recorded only 14mm of rain which is about a quarter of what we might expect in April. Weston Park weather station in Sheffield only recorded 10% of the usual rainfall. Whatever happened to April showers? We had perhaps two during the last week of the month. The long dry month certainly dried out the deep mud that had made walking across the fields around Holmesfield rather difficult. Actually, as I write this report on the 6th May, it is pouring with rain and you may remember that January and February were very wet, so our total rainfall for 2021 is – so far – well above normal. Secondly, April was quite sunny with 176 hours of bright sunshine recorded by my weather station. In March I only recorded 71 hours and even April last year, that was extremely sunny, only offered slightly more than this year at 191 hours. I record the UV (ultraviolet) index that is used to advise people when sunburn is a threat. People are often advised to use cream or a skin covering when the UV index is more than 2 and an index of 3 is said to give significant sunburn in about an hour of exposure. There were 17 days this April when the UV index was more than two and on seven days it was more than three. I never record an index much above five, even at the height of summer. Thirdly, and most unusually, the average temperature in April was lower than the average for March this year. The mean temperature was only 6.2°C which is 2 degrees below normal. We had bright cloudless skies during the days and it felt warm, but the temperatures plunged when the sun went down. Weston Park recorded eight days with an air frost. In fact, as I write this report, the average temperature for May is also lower than March. I hope that this does not continue. So in summary, April this year was dry, sunny but very cold. I have noticed that my grass has not grown much so far this year and the hedges are only just coming alive. However, the dandelions seem to have loved the weather. Brian Brown

Match News Week 3 saw further success for the 1st XI with an emphatic win over Nutbrook who were ‘all out’ for 66, Mayank Sharma taking 6 for 22 with the ball. Holmesfield quickly knocked off the runs finishing on 70 for 3. Meanwhile, the 2nd XI suffered their first defeat, losing in a tight game to local rivals Cutthorpe. Coming to the final two overs, Cutthorpe required 8 runs to win with 3 wickets remaining. Phil Yardy took the penultimate over, conceding 3 runs off the first four balls before taking two wickets with his final two deliveries, leaving the visitor’s requiring 5 runs to win. Archie Crapper bowled an excellent last over but a scrambled single off the last ball saw Cutthorpe through by the narrowest of margins. Holmesfield 229 for 8, Cutthorpe 230 for 9. Since then, the month has been extremely disappointing with Week 4 being rained off and in Week 5 only the 1st XI game surviving the weather. Holmesfield travelled to Darley Dale, Division 3 leaders at the time. The Vill batted first and got off to a poor start with leading run maker Mayank Sharma being adjudged LBW with the score on 5. Wickets fell steadily and saw us on 76-4 before Will Helliwell, firstly supported by Jimmy Pearson and then Ben Thornton-Walker, saw us through to 164 from the allotted overs. Will finished on 74 before being May - and it’s snowing! bowled, and Ben scored 27 not out. Holmesfield bowled well, steadily taking wickets and saw Darley Dale reduced to 85-7, however their opening bat proved difficult to remove. He, together with their number 9 steadily pushed the score on at the required rate of 6 an over. Mayank finally broke the partnership on 132, the remaining wickets falling quickly to see the opposition out for 147.

Our first league match at Retford - socially distanced of course!
Our ladies team played their first ever league games at Retford last Sunday and although they lost both matches, they put up two fantastic performances which bodes well for the remainder of the season. Clumber Park were our first opponents who amassed a net score of 299. It was apparent from their performance that they had been playing for some time, running well between the wickets to accumulate what turned out to be a winning score. Holmesfield fell just short reaching 289 from the allotted overs. The second game saw us playing Retford who had already beaten Clumber in their previous match. Holmesfield batted first and scored a very competitive 315 - Clare Wood and Sarah Wilson scoring 23 & Hannah Edwards and Isobel Murray scoring 22. Retford ended their innings on 317 with Sarah Wilson finishing with 1 wicket for 19 runs off 4 overs, a fantastic performance. From the coach’s point of view, the most pleasing aspect of the day was how quickly the ladies learnt and adapted to competitive cricket - our next opponents had better watch out! Player News May saw the arrival of new player / coach Brent, all the way from South Africa via all different isolation points!!! Brent will be helping coach the juniors on Fridays and their match days. In general participation, numbers are at their highest ever level, which is a great reflection of all the hard work being put in by the Junior Section co-ordinators. It is a clear statement that cricket can thrive if children are given the opportunity to play and develop not only their own physical skills, but also socially within a club environment. We currently have 102 members across all ages and run no less than 13 teams, with Junior membership accounting for around 60%. 43

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB (CONT.) Festival
We are staging a ladies cricket festival on Sunday 25th July. This is open to everybody and no previous experience is required. The day will see various teams play against each other with a view to introducing as many people as possible to the fun of softball cricket. We are looking to encourage as many ladies to participate as possible, either within our team or as part of their own team / group of friends. Please let us know if you are interested in playing or entering a team, all ages welcome. All equipment is provided on the day so all you need to do is come along. As well as the matches we will be providing games and entertainment on the day for all the family. Food and drink will be available on the day.

With the commencement of work to build a new dwelling on the rear car park at the George & Dragon, it is perhaps timely to go back to when an old barn and stables were demolished to make way for the extended car park. Former landlord Cyril Rowley was an ex-jockey and provided a popular riding school to supplement his pub income. Nick Wheat was able to record the scene just as demolition of the buildings commenced c.1988.
