PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place via Zoom on Wednesday 14 April 2021 at 7.30pm. Meeting ID: 891 2012 6936, Passcode: YY3t9A

LOCAL PLAN North East Derbyshire District Council have been tasked with finding land for future housing requirements in the district. This could potentially mean between 17 and 67 dwellings in Holmesfield. A number of pieces of land have been included in the North East Derbyshire Local Plan as possible development plots. The inclusion in the local plan does not automatically mean that these sites will have applications for development or indeed that planning would be approved. For note, the Holmesfield Play area off Woodside Avenue has been included as one of the plots, the land belongs to the Parish Council, there is no intention to develop the site and the Parish Council was not asked prior to this piece of land being included.

MAY NEWSLETTER All copy for the May Newsletter must be received by 18th April to ensure inclusion in the magazine. Holmesfield Parish Council welcomes the submission of articles pertinent to Holmesfield by residents for publication in the Parish Newsletter. Any thoughts and opinions are those of the individual(s) and may not necessarily be shared or endorsed by Holmesfield Parish Council. Any submissions must include full name and contact details before publication can be considered by the editor. Please send your articles typed via email if possible. This is especially important for images you wish to include. Please email any articles to: Holmesfield-newsletter@hotmail.com

JABBED INTO GOODNESS I was somewhat surprised to be called for my Covid vaccination this week. As a ‘youthful’ forty something I thought I’d be waiting a longer time for my jab. A text message and an appointment booked for 48 hours later, a marvel of technology! Dare I say, a miracle… As I nurse a sore arm I am grateful for those who have worked so hard over the last year, given selflessly of their time and effort out of concern for others. Thank you! Sadly there have also been times of selfishness. I’m sure you will remember when frontline staff were shown on the news crying in despair as people cleared the shelves of essential items, leaving nothing for them. Or as others flouted the lockdown rules leaving nurses and doctors with a bigger Covid battle on their hands. Easter is the time when we remember the selfless love of Jesus. If we have a mindset like his, setting aside our own needs and desires for the benefit of others, the world will be utterly transformed. You don’t need to be a Christian to be good or do things which benefit others. Most of us think we are generally good people. But the Cross of Christ - found on everything from hot cross buns to the Union Flag (x3) - puts a cross through everything we do wrong AND what other people do wrong. Yes, those people: the lockdown rule-breakers; the greedy, selfish people. The Cross is the great leveller which means we don’t have to have something over someone else. We don’t have to win at the expense of someone else. And here’s a shot in the arm, one better than the Cross - the empty tomb. Life beyond this life. Hope wins. Love wins. So tell the kids or grand-kids about all this and who knows, they might even give you one of their Easter eggs?! Love wins! Have a happy, safe and blessed Easter and may you enjoy the beauty of Spring. God bless, Rev. Ian.

DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM Crime figures for February 2021 - 6 crimes reported Theft: 2 - Criminal damage: 3 - Burglary: 1 There has been an increase in criminal damage, and although it is only an increase of one on the previous month, they are all linked to the same address and we are working with the victim and our partner agencies as appropriate. It should be emphasised that we are patrolling the area on a regular basis both on foot and also using vehicles. We are aware of some increased activity around the sports field and will pay passing attention between commitments. We would like to remind residents to contact the police using the appropriate methods. We would also like to make people aware that we have had some recent reports of interference or theft of a caravan, so we would like to remind the public to think about the level of security they may have in place. We are happy for people to contact Dronfield SNT if they would like personal advice. Derbyshire Police are keen to support and promote Neighbourhood Watch schemes across the county as they do play an integral part of crime prevention and crime investigation. Dronfield SNT are keen to support more schemes to be set up across our district as we know just how vital a part they can play within the community and the positive impact they can have on communities and making people feel safe and supported. If residents have any questions, please feel free to contact Dronfield Safer Neighbourhood Team or check out the Derbyshire NHW website: www.derbyshireneighbourhoodwatch.co.uk

HOLMESFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Alison Smith has retired from being Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator for Holmesfield, our thanks go to her for her service to the Parish. She can be contacted on chesterfielddistrictnhw@hotmail.co.uk or 0300 122 8526 We very much hope a new co-ordinator can be found otherwise the Watch will need to be closed and the street signs removed. 11

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Dear friends of Penny Acres Primary School, Monday 8th March saw the full return of pupils to our fabulous school, something that quite rightly put a smile on everybody’s faces. Once again our classrooms are filled with the sounds of laughter, learning and friendship and as we settle to a new ‘normal’, the children’s resilience is more apparent and worthy of celebration than ever before. Our hope now is that as Covid-19 rates continue to fall, we can once again open our doors for visits out, residential journeys, summer fayres, sports days and PTFA events. We’re keeping our fingers crossed... Watch this space! In the meantime, please stay safe and take care.. Kindest regards Mr Ratcliffe – Executive Headteacher. Federation of Penny Acres and Wigley Primary Schools. Penny Acres: 0114 2890330

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION In March at the suggestion of the Holmesfield Community Support Group, some members – assisted by several lady volunteers from the HCSG – work got underway on the wildflower planting scheme. Work was started by the church and in the Millennium Garden on Saturday 20th March. Fortunately it was a nice day and everyone worked very hard clearing turf and weeds. This continued on 27th March and the seeds which have arrived will be sown on the following Saturday in April. The seeds were funded by Holmesfield Village Society and our grateful thanks goes to them for their generosity and the volunteers for planting them. Our Garden Visits and Social organiser, Hilary Olsen, has informed me that Holmesfield Parish Council are thinking of opening the Hall from 17th May in which case we may be able to recommence on the first Wednesday in June. Frances Webb

Watch this space!

HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP BARLOW WALK On Wednesday 28th April at 10.00am, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Peacock Inn at Barlow. We will walk to Cutthorpe through the fields and return by a different route. We will hopefully have lunch outside at the Peacock (optional) or across the road at Hackney House – this all depends on the legislation at the time. The walk is approx. 4 miles long but a shortcut is available. If you would like to come just turn up on the day but check with Robin before hand to make sure the walk is still going ahead as these are very uncertain times. The cost of the walk is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. Please phone Robin on 01246 412767 if you have any queries.

3rd HOLMESFIELD SCOUT GROUP Due to Covid-19 restrictions and lock-down we have no dates for meetings at this time. Please contact Richard Wilkinson for further information on 01246 412576, or email : thirdholmesfieldscoutgroup@hotmail.co.uk. 17

PARKING CONCERNS Following some concerns raised about parking across the area please take into consideration the following information; Some but not all of the recent reports have included parking on soft or grass verges causing damage and areas becoming mud zones. Parking blocking other residents’ vehicles and restricted access. Parking on pavements and blocking footpaths causing vulnerable people in area to be forced to walk on the road to get pasted the obstruction. The police can remove your unattended vehicle if you cause an obstruction, and Civil Enforcement Officers can issue you with a penalty charge notice for stopping in a restricted area. This means blocking a driveway or a path even for a short amount of time. Pavements are for people, help keep pedestrians safe or risk prosecution and your vehicle being towed away. Please think about the following points in response to considerate parking; PCSO Jonathan Flower

DO NOT:

DO:

• Stop or park near a school entrance and keep off school keep clear markings • Double park to pick up or drop off children from vehicles. • Park in such a position that buses, the emergency services and other commercial vehicles are unable to pass. • Block the pavement - allow at least a ‘double buggy’ width for people to use it safely. • Park where a bus stop is clearly defined either by road markings or an actual shelter.

• Observe in force parking restrictions that may apply. • Consider parking further away from the school. • Consider local residents and whether they have immediate access onto and off their driveway. • Remember that buses are there to provide a public service and inconsiderate parking can give rise to unnecessary delays. • Consider people who are blind, partially sighted, elderly, infirm, mobility scooters, wheelchair users, adults with prams - they shouldn’t need to step into the road because you’ve parked selfishly.

SUPERVISING CHILDREN’S ONLINE ACTIVITY Parents/Guardian’s should be aware about allowing your child unsupervised access to the internet and unlimited access to your bank details when playing games online. Monitor what kind of sites your child is visiting, keep track of who they are speaking to online, make sure you have security settings up to date and that your bank details can’t be accessed without your permission. DISTRACTION BURGLARY - REMAIN VIGILANT Residents living in the Dronfield area are asked to be vigilant after a distraction burglary. At around 3pm on Wednesday 24 March, a man visited the home of a 90-year-old woman in the town, claiming that he needed to check her upstairs taps. The woman later realised her bedroom had been searched. It is not known at this time if anything was stolen. The man is described as white, aged about 30 and with curly brown hair. Witnesses or anyone with information should contact the police quoting reference 21*165004;

WORRIED ABOUT GETTING HACKED? Over 15,000 hacked email and social media accounts reported in one year. If a hacker got into your email or social media account, what would they find? Health and banking information? Names and contact details for your friends and family? Private photos and messages? For most people, it’s at least one of those. Your email and social media accounts contain a wealth of personal information about you, which makes them a lucrative target for cyber criminals. Between February 2020 and February 2021, Action Fraud received 15,214 reports about email and social media account hacking. The majority of reports (88%) were made by individuals, with 12% of reports being made by businesses. Analysis of the crime reports revealed that Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat were the most affected social media accounts, with phishing messages being the most common tactic used by cyber criminals to lure unsuspecting victims. The motivation behind the hacks are varied and can range from financial gain, to revenge or personal amusement. Some victims are extorted for money, whilst others have their accounts used to send malicious links to their contacts. One victim who had multiple email and social media accounts hacked paid over £2,000 to regain access to them. Another victim reported that her hacked Facebook account was used to trick her friends into sending money into a PayPal account they thought belonged to her. Secure your email and social media accounts in just a few minutes. Here’s what you need to do: 1: Use a strong and separate password for your email, as well as other important accounts, such as your banking or social media accounts. 2: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA). It will help to stop hackers from getting into your online accounts, even if they have your password. 3: If you can’t access your account, search the company’s online support or help pages. You’ll find information about how to recover your account. For detailed instructions on how to reset your password or enable 2FA on your accounts, visit: www.actionfraud.police.uk/secureyouraccounts (Please forward this message to any friends, family members or colleagues that may find this information useful) Action Fraud (Action Fraud, Administrator, National) 23

DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL COVID-19 ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to self-isolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. Links to Government and NHS advice on Coronavirus and self isolation are available on the county council’s website: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/coronavirus (the relevant landing page is pinned to the top of the home page) Please only take advice about Coronavirus from official channels and avoid potentially erroneous and unverifiable advice on social media. www.gov.uk : www.nhs.uk

CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT HELPLINE Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust recognises the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our communities and the impact that the pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of people in Derbyshire. It has launched a new telephone-based support line for local people of all ages and their carers who are experiencing increased distress or anxiety during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new service also intends to support people who are experiencing a reduction in their usual mental health care services, as a result of changes that have been made to support the pandemic. The support line, which will initially be available between the hours of 9am – midnight every day of the week can be contacted on 0300 790 0596. For more information about the support line and wider information about our services at this time, please visit the Trust’s website: www.derbyshirehealthcareft.nhs.uk/coronavirus 25

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE It’s hard to believe that it was just over a year ago when we created this group. In the last year, we have tried to safeguard our community through a range of support activities. From the communications we have received it is clear that we have succeeded in our vision and there is a real desire by people of all ages to keep the Support Group going but in the form of a community network. We have used the network to communicate about charity collections, items for sale, news, events and activities in the village. Last month, we asked how people felt about keeping the group going. From the feedback received it is clear that people felt very supported, one of the emails received thanked the group for ‘picking up prescriptions, shopping when necessary, supplying meals, and generally giving us peace of mind’. We have run a range of activities throughout the year, the driver of these activities was to keep us all sane in lockdown! But people have really enjoyed getting involved and the plan is (if everyone is prepared to keep supporting) to keep some of these activities going – for example the Scarecrow Competition, the Pumpkin Trail, definitely the Christmas Carol session, to name but a few. We can only do it with your support! We will let you know what is happening. All you need to do is get involved! In March and April we have managed to enlist the support of the Holmesfield Garden Association for our wild flower planting activity. Special thanks to Hilary Olsen and Fran Webb for organising the volunteers who have been preparing areas in the Millennium Gardens and the front of the church. Big special thanks to all of you who turned up to help. The last prep date is Saturday 3rd April 9:30am at the Millennium Garden when the planting will happen. We also have bags of seeds for people to take home and plant in their gardens... It would be great to walk around the village and see everyone’s ‘Lockdown Flowerbeds’. Thank you to Holmesfield Village Society and the Holmesfield Local Market group for the donations to pay for the seeds. If you want to get a bag of seeds, pop along on Saturday morning or email Carl at holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com If you are house bound and can’t make it, please let us know we will get some seeds to you.

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE (CONT.) This time last year, we also arranged for the children of the village to do Easter cards for all our over 70s. This year, a big thanks needs to go to the children of Penny Acres Primary School who have been so busy designing and making cards for all of you. Thanks to Ken for allowing us to put them into the newsletter distribution network! Other news: From 29th March we will officially stop doing the pharmacy runs but this does not mean that we won’t support people who need help. If you get Covid, or you are isolating and need support we are here for you. Holmesfield Local Market: The local market team are delighted to announce that they are planning to do the first market on Saturday 17th July. More information will follow but put that date in the diary! Find information on what is happening on Holmesfield Support Network on facebook – just search @Holmesfield2020 to find our page. Or message on Whats App to 07711772058 if you want to join the network community page. Aoife & the Holmesfield Support Network Have a great Easter.

TO ALL DOG OWNERS Dog fouling issues are the worst they have ever been in Holmesfield. Most people take poo bags out with then and remove it, but others give all dog owners a bad name by leaving it. The irresponsible ones do not use poo bags, they go out under the cover of darkness and think picking it up does not apply to them. Some go out in broad daylight and leave a mess on footpaths used by the children on their way to school. It is not in one particular place but in several areas in the village. The small minority of dog owners who do not clean up after their dog are putting children at risk of serious illness. It is not nice to step in it, push a wheelchair through it, drive a mobility scooter through it or worse fall in it. REMINDER: It is against the law to allow a dog to foul in a public place and make no attempt to clean it up. The maximum penalty from a criminal prosecution in a court may be £1,000. Please keep Holmesfield dog poo clean. 29

RANSOMWARE DECRYPTION TOOL Ransomware is a type of malicious software where criminals can remotely encrypt your device or your files. A pop-up window will appear and demands a payment (usually in cryptocurrency) in ransom for the decryption key. Fortunately there is now a decryption tool for the most recent strands of ransomeware that has been released to get back your files without paying the ransom, which could save victims millions in ransomware payments. The website www.nomoreransom.org is a trustworthy source that will help you do this for free. If you are a victim the advice is not to pay as there is no guarantee your files will be released. Please report the incident to Action Fraud immediately. Tips to protect yourself: • Don’t click on links in unsolicited emails or from anyone you don’t r ecognise and aren’t expecting – • Only visit reputable websites • Make sure your software and apps are up to date • Ensure you have updated and effective anti-virus software • Regularly back-up your important data (kept separate to your computer) and regularly test it! PATCHED WELLINGTONS AND SECRET PARCELS Well, yes, it has been difficult over the last few weeks, combined with all the restrictions, but the residents of the village have responded and helped in many ways and will, no doubt, continue to do so. In 1947 I was 8 years of age and living in Cutthorpe with my parents in an old stone cottage. The severe weather began in the first week of January and continued until the last week in March. Most nights saw freezing temperatures and on most days it snowed. Cutthorpe and Pratt Hall had a bus service, but one single deck bus was marooned outside the Gate Inn for 6 weeks. The local council employed workers – often farmers – to use the wooden snowploughs which were adjustable from narrow to road width and the Council also hired the horses to pull the ploughs when the snow wasn’t too deep. These horses had to be stabled, dried and fed in readiness for the next days work. There were few tractors and only two cars in the village that I can remember in 1947. Most villagers were employed either as farm workers or coal miners and wives obtained work where and when they could. February 1947 was the coldest for 65 years; coal stocks nationally were reported as 5 million tons below normal. As most houses in Cutthorpe were heated by fossil fuels, alternatives such as wood were in great demand and most of us at our age were told to make sure we came home for sledging or skating with a piece of discarded timber. Coal miners in those days received a free load of coal from time to time which was generally dumped outside their house in the road, but nobody complained – they just walked round it. We walked to Cutthorpe Primary School each day – a mile each way, often along trenches up to 6 feet deep, looking upwards to the smiling roadmen who had dug the trenches for us and the teachers. The school never closed, not even for one day, and everyone walked – even from as far away as Old Brampton which was in the same parish. Nationally, two million workers were laid off and thousands worked on a part time basis; some power stations were brought to a standstill and every day electricity was switched off for electrical fires from 9am–12noon and 2–4pm. Rolls Royce at Crewe used car engines to generate local power, but everywhere there was evidence of neighbourliness, resourcefulness, fortitude and a spirit of ‘Let’s make the best of it’. After only 2 years of peace following the end of the Second World War, there was still rationing of clothing, furniture, sweets and petrol. Wellington boots 35

were unobtainable so everyone repaired them with patches from car inner tube repair kits. I wore them, along with a pilot’s leather helmet and chinchilla fur gauntlets. As we all wore similar things, we didn’t standout as looking particularly ridiculous. On some windy nights, pigs were killed illegally to supplement the meat ration. I was warned to say nothing if a gentle tap on the door at night heralded a blood stained newspaper parcel being handed in with no words being exchanged. A farmer friend of mine recalled witnessing a shout from one of his friends at the end of March whilst on snow ploughing duties, and, suspecting a victim being revealed during the thaw, the whole team gathered to view a patch of green grass – the first they had seen for nearly 12 weeks! As village children and known to everyone in the village, we were allowed to walk anywhere, the golden rule being we must never leave gates open and we never did. There was only one place we were totally forbidden to go near. It was a factory and kept locked and very secure, and a humming noise came from it during night time. We called it the ‘Bomb Factory’ and it was situated at Four Lane Ends. Once a week a grey painted sealed lorry came from Manchester, we later discovered, carrying explosives for weapons manufacture. We never saw people coming and going into or out of the establishment, and in due course, it was shut down, dismantled and the Mother’s Pride bread factory took its place. The site is now occupied by a private housing estate. Ironically, the winter of 1947 was followed by a freak summer, and in our area we went 32 days without a drop of rain and the temperature was almost unbearable. Nationally, weather conditions produced a great deal of conversation, and will probably continue to do so. The Spring is coming, and we will ‘Keep smiling and carry on’ as we were instructed to do all those years ago. Roger Webb

DOMESTIC ABUSE Derbyshire Police are raising awareness of how you can contact them, or local support services, if you are experiencing domestic abuse. With increased measures to restrict the spread of coronavirus, many people in our communities are now isolating within their homes. Sadly, this means that we may see a rise in cases of domestic abuse as families and couples are spending more time in close quarters than ever before. We are committed to supporting anyone who finds themselves experiencing domestic abuse; being in isolation doesn’t mean you’re on your own. Domestic abuse is never ok. We also want to remind people who are worried about their own behaviour or actions that there is a support line available. DCI Brian Bilby, from the force’s Public Protection Unit, said: “We know that coronavirus will have a serious impact on the lives of anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse. Fears over jobs, financial pressure, school closures, working from home and all the other current changes to our daily lives could result in an increase in domestic abuse incidents. If you’re already living with domestic abuse, then the current restrictions on movement to slow the spread of the virus have probably left you fearful of being isolated in the house with your abuser and as if there is nowhere to go for help. You may not be able to see the friends and family who usually support you, and some of the places where you go for help or treatment may be closed or offering a reduced service. Please remember that you can still call 999 if you or someone else is in danger.” DCI Bilby said that while some domestic abuse support services are not currently offering face-to-face meetings, advice and support is still available on the phone or online. In Derbyshire, the following services are available; Derbyshire Domestic Abuse Service – 0800 019 8668 National Domestic Abuse Helpline – 0808 200 0247 Men’s Advice Line – 0808 801 0327 National LBGT+ Domestic Abuse Helpline – 0800 999 5428 Rape and Sexual Violence Services – 01773 746 115 Sail Derbyshire – a variety of numbers are available via their website: www.sailderbyshire.org.uk If you’re a child or young person and domestic abuse is happening in your home or relationship, then call Childline on 0800 1111. If you are worried about hurting the ones you love whilst staying at home, call the Respect Phoneline for support and help to manage your behaviour, 0808 8024040. 39

FEBRUARY 2021 WEATHER February was a rather strange month in terms of the weather. On average the temperature was 4.1°C which is very slightly warmer than the average for February. However, this number hides the fact that from the 7-13th of the month, the daily mean temperature never rose above zero and the average was -1.9°C. In total contrast from the 19-25th, the average temperature was 8.4°C, with a maximum of 14°C on the 24th and the sun shone gloriously. I recorded 27 hours of bright sunshine, which is most unusual for February. The cold spell during the first half of the month was a continuation of the cold weather at the end of January. I speculated last month that the cold weather would continue if the long range weather forecasters predictions, as a result of the ‘stratospheric cooling event’ over the Arctic, were to be believed. It is interesting that we were not alone in experiencing a cold spell; the southern states of the USA also experienced extremely cold and unusual weather. A friend in Austin, Texas, wrote to me that on the 12th February the temperature had dropped to -12°C and they had six inches of snow. Ten days later they were back to normal with the temperature above 10°C. Texas is much further south than we are and yet they seem to have been affected by the same flow of cold air from the north that we did. I also saw it reported that there was quite deep snow in Athens at the same time as our cold spell in February. Athens is of course much further south than we are, so snow is unusual. I remember a year in the 1990s when I was teaching on a course in Patras. I remarked on arrival that the clouds looked similar to what I would expect to be followed by snow if I was in Sheffield. The following day it snowed in Athens and I remember being very cold in Patras. Places that expect to be warm can be very uncomfortable when it is cold, as there is not much heating in buildings and the doors and windows are often not well sealed. In summary, February was about average but it did contain some extremes of temperature. The rainfall was about 30% more than normal. The wettest day was on the 2nd when almost an inch of rain fell and this changed to snow later in the day. That few inches of snow lingered for several days. Brian Brown

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). 49

ST. SWITHIN’S CHURCH From 28th March until 5th April our self-led Easter Trail or ‘Wonder Wander’ will be up in the churchyard. Can you find the hidden word? Trail starts at the church main door. St Swithins Holmesfield and St Philips Dronfield have put together some Easter craft bags suitable for primary aged children. Please email Sarah Webb – sarah@webbhome.co.uk – if your family would like one. Church is open for Sunday services at 10.30am - please ring to book a place as seating is limited due to social distancing rules. Contact us or check our Facebook group for further details. If anyone would like to come into the church for some peace, quiet and prayer the vicar or church warden can arrange for the church to be opened for you. Pastoral visits from the vicar are also possible if you or a relative are in need of support and when we agree the benefits outweigh the risks. Online Sunday services are broadcast at 10am on our YouTube channel:

www.youtube.com/dwhparish Our weekly church newsletter can be delivered to you. We continue to keep Holmesfield parishioners (that’s you!) in our prayers.

Regrettably, information regarding this photograph – which was kindly sent in by Christine Eyre several years ago – is rather sparse. It is captioned as being the Holmesfield Village Fête organising committee. The date is unknown but is from a page of other photographs from the 1940s and appears to have been taken on the site of the village playground. Can any readers identify any of the committee members other than the distinctive figure of Major Wilson of Horsleygate Hall sat by the table?
