BOOKLET TO INCREASE SAFETY IN RURAL AREAS A booklet which gives advice on a range of issues such as theft, fire and personal safety has been launched in a bid to target countryside crime and emergencies in Derbyshire. The Derbyshire Rural Safety and Crime Prevention Guide has come about through a collaboration between Derbyshire Constabulary, Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service. The booklet covers issues which have been highlighted as a priority for the rural communities of Derbyshire and gives advice on how to prevent them, to help people stay safe and to reduce crime and accidents. From a crime prevention perspective, topics include farm machinery, plant and vehicle theft, livestock worrying and theft, fuel theft, equine crime, fly-tipping and poaching. There is also a wealth of important safety information, including the safe storage of flammable materials, fire and electrical safety, winter driving advice and help in medical emergencies. The launch comes as part of Operation Derbyshire, which aims to highlight the good work that is taking place across our area and to share this with our communities. Copies of the booklet may be downloaded from www.derbyshire.police.uk

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL Holmesfield Village Hall looks forward to welcoming back hirers and visitors once restrictions are lifted. Until then - stay safe. 5

NO COMMENT 20/01095/FL : Mr Mark Timperley, Cherry Tree Farm Cowley Lane Holmesfield Retention of existing timber clad building for use as a motorcycle business (Camio Moto) (Affecting a public right of way). COMMENT: Local residents have raised concerns about increase of traffic on a narrow country lane, in particular large vans and lorries which are most unsuitable for accessing the site. There are concerns about the potential noise and nuisance in a rural location of the use of motorbikes at the site. 20/01143/FL : Mr. & Mrs. Hinchcliffe – Little Orchard, Horsleygate Lane, Holmesfield – Residential development for one dwelling including demolition of existing building and tennis court, reduction in hard standing, and provision of associated landscaping. PLANNING MATTERS Applications Received from North East Derbyshire District Council (cont.) 20/01137/FL : Mr. M. Jacques – Cartledge Hall Farm, Cartledge Lane, Holmesfield – Demolition of existing buildings and conversion of existing buildings (formerly used in association with the livery business and riding school) to form a single dwelling; restoration and retention of ancillary buildings; erection of four new dwellings with associated landscaping, parking and access (Re-submission of 19/00786/FL) (conservation area/affecting the setting of a listed building/affecting a public right of way). COMMENT: As per the comments made on the previous application 19/00786/FL the Parish Council appreciate the need to renovate the existing agricultural buildings now that there is insufficient working land associated with the property. There are concerns that the proposal is over development of the site in the conservation area with a number of new buildings. It would be preferred if more use could be made of the format of the existing buildings. Also, the access is a long and very narrow track, with a poor visibility splay on to Cartledge Lane, which may be deemed unsuitable for increased traffic. There appears to be insufficient parking spaces for residents and visitors allocated on the site, this is considered important to avoid congestion on the narrow access lane, which is adjacent to a working farm. North East Derbyshire District Council Decisions: NP/NED/1119/1212 : Thickwood Lodge Baslow Road Owler Bar - Demolition of existing surrounding single storey extensions and replacement with an above ground and subterranean extension. The proposed works also include repairs and restoration of the Lodge tower. GRANTED NP/NED/1119/1213 : Thickwood Lodge Baslow Road Owler Bar - Listed Building Consent for the above (NP/NED/1119/1212). GRANTED 20/00013/FL : Kate Jackson – 2 Buttermead Cottages, Cowley Lane, Holmesfield – Application for construction of a ménage with agricultural building and stables (amended plans). GRANTED 20/00513/FLH : Kate Jackson, 2 Buttermead Cottages, Cowley Lane, Holmesfield Application for single storey rear extension, to kitchen and lounge, new roof to existing GRANTED utility, cladding and rendering to existing house with patio extension. 20/00356/FL : Mr & Mrs Garnett – Dale View, Castle Hill, Holmesfield – Demolition of existing bungalow and construction of a new four bedroom dwelling GRANTED (amended plans). NP/NED/0620/0470 : Bank Green, Fox Lane, Holmesfield – Single Storey REFUSED extension to kitchen/dining room. 9

AVOIDING THE DOG’S EARS There’s an old Proverb found in the Bible that says, “Like somebody who takes a passing dog by the ears is one who meddles in the quarrel of another.” Perhaps you have noticed how easy it is these days to become embroiled in a quarrel and feel the old blood pressure rising? If you watch the news or take a newspaper you will almost certainly have found yourself more angry by the time you get to the sports section than before you sat down to read or watch. And if you’ve got the great misfortune of being on social media, just a few minutes of ‘doom scrolling’ is probably enough for you to have got wound up by somebody. Pick a hot potato Covid; people flouting lockdown; Brexit; the BBC; the NHS - and you pick an argument. I’ve recently recognised that when newspapers shout “Fury at…!” and when Facebook offers me an article criticising someone or something, that these are ‘passing dogs’ who’s ears I will resist pulling! What the modern media entices us to really do is pull the ears of our fellow human beings; to sow discord and division. This is not how we should treat each other. We should love each other. And Jesus gives us a better example than pulling a passing dog by the ears. He takes off his rabbi’s robes, wraps a towel round his waist and stoops down to wash his students’ feet. This is a sign or an acting out of how things should be in our relations with one another. Metaphorically speaking we should not grab each other by the ears, we should seek to wash each other’s feet. Why not try it? So avoid those passing dog’s ears, stay home, stay safe and God keep you and yours well. The Spring is coming; hope of new life is on the way. Rev. Ian.

WORKING ON THE CENSUS If you’re a people person, have great customer service skills and want to be part of something that affects all of us, then consider applying for a job with the census. For Census 2021, we’ll be hiring at least 30,000 field staff across England and Wales. As it gets closer, we’ll be advertising the opportunities online. It takes a big team to ensure the census runs smoothly. Our field team is vital to our success. As part of our field team, you would be the face of the census – visiting people who have not yet responded, offering help and encouraging people to take part. It’s an essential part of making sure we get the responses we need to make the census the best it can be. www.census.gov.uk/jobs 13

DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM Crime figures for January 2021 - 6 crimes reported Criminal damage: 2 - Violence against the person: 1 Burglary: 1 - Theft:1 - Other: 1 While there is a slight increase overall figure, there is a number that are linked with the same incidents, e.g 1 incident has created multiple crimes been reported. Over the past 4 weeks we have several vehicle crime related incidents reported across our area. We urge members of the public to make sure they follow the following hints and tips to keep your vehicle and property safe. • Keep doors locked and do not leave windows open. • Do not leave any valuables on display. • Remove sat navs from display and wipe the mark from the window where it has been secured. • Take MP3s ipads, iphones etc. with you. • If you intend to leave items in the vehicle place them in the boot and not in the glove box or under the seat. • Put away any charging cables from the cigarette lighter and put the lighter back in it’s place. • Remove stereo facia if possible. • Leave the glove box open and sun visors down to show there is nothing hidden. • Don’t leave any bags or clothing or loose change on display. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION Sadly we are now experiencing a crisis in the pandemic and any meetings of the Association would require that we are lowered to Tier 2 which seems unlikely in the foreseeable future. As a consequence, the February AGM is cancelled. The talk given by Mr Peter Forrow on The Gardening Year - Part 2 will also be cancelled unless we move to Tier 2, which again seems unlikely. If I recall correctly, I think The Gardening Year - Part 1 also had to be cancelled. If by any chance the situation changes, please contact our Social Organiser Hilary Olsen on 0114 289 0927– to check if a meeting is arranged and to check if there is available space due to Social distancing . We can only be thankful that vaccines are now available and some members have been fortunate enough to receive them. Please keep safe until we meet again.

The cost of the walk is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. Please phone Robin on 01246 412767 if you have any queries.

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Dear friends of Penny Acres Primary School, As we enter another lockdown, the culture and ethos of our fabulous school remains as strong and as upbeat as ever. My children, with the continued support of their families, are working from home in their usual mature, conscientious ways with bagfuls of pride in all that they do. My staff continue to give their all, supporting not only the home-learning but also provision in school for those children of critical workers. As for plans, key dates, events, etc …… Who knows?! All I ask is that we continue to follow the rules, follow the guidance and keep each other safe, in the hope that our school doors can once again be open to all. Stay safe everybody Mr Ratcliffe – Executive Headteacher. Federation of Penny Acres and Wigley Primary Schools. Penny Acres: 0114 2890330

FOOTPRINTS It is estimated that around 200 deer have settled on Big Moor and Totley Moss, the theory being that they have escaped from the Chatsworth Estate. Fierce winter conditions occasionally see them gathered behind the Peacock Inn at Owler Bar. I have also seen a splendid herd of 10 Fallow Deer hinds (Dama dama) in the fields near Hirst Hollow accompanied by a mature stag. They jumped the old HaHa into Holmesfield Park Wood. They are therefore scattered in our parish and have created problems for landowners and farmers by eating valuable crops of cereals and brassicas, often quite close to the village. In these circumstances they can be shot and several have been, the last one I heard of being heavily pregnant which was tragic. Last year I was called to a Red Deer fawn, the animal (Cervus elephus) caught on wire on Holmesfield Common with serious injuries to one of its legs. The authorities were alerted to the situation and in due course a wildlife representative appeared but decided to destroy the animal as it was too badly injured to release back into the wild and became frantic in its attempts to escape. I was offered the remains as a tasty venison treat but as I only eat Fallow Deer, I graciously refused the offer. It has been suggested that road traffic signs should be erected in the parish warning of the possible presence of deer, which sometimes, particularly in the summer months, use the warm road surface to sleep on. I once narrowly missed a sleeping mature red deer stag in the middle of the night on the road from Glencoe across Rannoch Moor to Tyndrum. The results of a collision can be very serious as I have seen. From time to time people countrywide report the presence of Wallabies, even after the remains of the colony disappeared from the environs of Leek, but some years ago two early morning shooters on Birchin Lea Nurseries on the fringe of the parish reported “two Kangaroos in your Raspberries” to the owner. Apparently, they hopped off (sic) towards Gillfield Wood. These creatures are interesting, and in the case of deer, seem to be firmly established in the parish. Deer fences have been erected to protect garden crops. In due course we may have to accept these creatures as an integral part of being Holmesfeldians. Roger Webb

DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL COVID-19 ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to self-isolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. Links to Government and NHS advice on Coronavirus and self isolation are available on the county council’s website: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/coronavirus (the relevant landing page is pinned to the top of the home page) Please only take advice about Coronavirus from official channels and avoid potentially erroneous and unverifiable advice on social media. www.gov.uk : www.nhs.uk

CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT HELPLINE Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust recognises the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our communities and the impact that the pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of people in Derbyshire. It has launched a new telephone-based support line for local people of all ages and their carers who are experiencing increased distress or anxiety during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new service also intends to support people who are experiencing a reduction in their usual mental health care services, as a result of changes that have been made to support the pandemic. The support line, which will initially be available between the hours of 9am – midnight every day of the week can be contacted on 0300 790 0596. For more information about the support line and wider information about our services at this time, please visit the Trust’s website: www.derbyshirehealthcareft.nhs.uk/coronavirus 25

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE This month we have been trying to support the community by providing lifts to those people who have been getting their vaccinations. It is great to see that our over 80s groups have been contacted and are getting their vaccinations. From the news this week, some of the people in the community in the 70s age group are being contacted. We have also heard from the community that some of those who have been shielding are also receiving letters and vaccination appointments. This is all great news. With new centres opening up in Chesterfield and Sheffield, some people may be asked to travel further to get their vaccinations. If you are asked and have no transport or need a lift to your appointment, we now have a list of 18 people who can provide support for this particular need, so please don’t miss your appointment because of lack of transport! We are here for you. There has been a lot of media coverage around the vaccinations programme. What we have been told by the local surgeries is that they and the central NHS are working methodically through their priority lists. In some cases, surgeries have been sending emails advising people about booking in for your vaccinations – so please keep an eye out on your email. If you do receive one and need support with online forms, please do ask us as we have lots of volunteers who can support. The national Covid numbers have halved in the last two weeks according the Covid research, but we are not seeing that here in North East Derbyshire. The latest Covid updates from Kings College in London shows that the number of estimated cases for North East Derbyshire has shot up in the last week. It is very important that we continue to follow the rules: hands – face - space. If you would like to sign up to the reporting app, please visit covid.joinzoe.com Pharmacy runs: This month we have continued to offer the pharmacy runs, bread runs and general support for those who need it.

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE Other Village updates: Andrea and Adam Kilner have continued to support the village by arranging for bread to be available from Sainsbury’s. There has been less this month but keep an eye out for their announcements on the WhatsApp group. Share the LOVE…Valentine Cupcakes & Window posters: The local market team have come up with another great idea to help share the Valentine love in February. You will notice that the centre page of the newsletter this month has a wonderful heart design. We would like you to use this as a window poster and put in your windows as a sign that you are ‘Sharing the Love’ with the NHS, with your village friends, with your family, and with the community. It would be great to see as many hearts in windows as possible. Andrea Kilner has been commissioned by the group to make 200 Valentine cupcakes. The plan is that we will give these out on Sunday 14th February to all of the over 70s in the community but we are also asking you to ‘nominate a neighbour’! So what does ‘nominate a neighbour’ mean? It simply means if you know someone is living alone that you would like to nominate for a cupcake, please send your nomination to holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com or message 077 11 77 2058 with the name and address and we will aim to ensure they are included. If you can help with the distribution of the cupcakes on Sunday the 14th, please let us know as soon as possible so we can start planning the routes.. Baby Basic’s Collection: During the summer we collected for baby basics, they are a charity that support new mums, and their children. In January alone they are helping over 1050 children in the city of Sheffield. The collection point is at the Holmesfield Cricket Club. There are bins and boxes there for you to put your donations in. Looking forward to seeing all of those hearts in the windows! Happy February everyone. Aoife & the Holmesfield Support Network 29

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

As we start the New Year we still find ourselves in the grip of the pandemic. Whatever the future may bring we need to plan ahead and make sure we are ready to start whenever we get the all clear from the government. If ever there was a time to get involved in community and sport, its now Fancy a New Career? High on the list of priorities is to find a new scorer, or preferably two. The league rules state that each team must provide a scorer, failure to do so results in a fine. If anybody fancies becoming an integral part of the team - it’s a paid position too! Please contact Jimmy Pearson. Experience is not essential as we can offer online courses to take you through what is required. All ages welcomed. Playing Opportunities We are still looking for new players for the coming season. All ages and abilities welcomed. We play senior cricket on Tuesdays or Wednesday nights (midweek XI) and Saturdays (First XI). Junior cricket is played most days of the week from May to July. As part of our junior cricket setup we offer the ECB backed All Stars & Dynamos programme.

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU!

What is All Stars & Dynamos Cricket? DECEMBER 2020 WEATHER 2020 is much more likely to stick in your mind as the year of the pandemic rather than a year of unusual weather. Overall it was not an exceptional year in terms of the weather. The mean temperature was 4.3°C with a maximum of 11.9°C on the 18th. The rainfall was 117mm which is about 40mm more than normal, so, it was only slightly warmer and a little wetter than normal but some records were set. February was said to be the wettest February since 1884 and spring was one of the sunniest and driest on record. If you were able to get outside during March, April and May then the spring sunshine helped make the days of lockdown more pleasant. December 2020 was slightly colder than usual – we actually had some snow on the 4/5th and then again on the 29th. The Met. Office recorded a ‘white Christmas’ but we did not have any snow in Holmesfield on the 25th. The definition of a White Christmas, used by both the Met. Office and the bookmakers, is snow actually falling anywhere in the UK on the 25th December. It is a bit odd that there could be a foot of snow on the ground, but unless there is snow actually falling, a white Christmas is not called. A friend in Bradway said that they had some snowfall on the 24th so there were obviously showers around. About two inches of snow fell on the 29th and it lay on the ground for a few days. Charles Dickens is often said to have first talked of a white Christmas in his Pickwick Papers and A Christmas Carol. Snow at Christmas is actually quite unusual. Dickens spent his childhood in Portsmouth and in Kent and the decade from 1810 to 1819, including his birth in 1812, was said to be the coldest decade in England since the 1690s. So perhaps Dickens did remember snow at Christmas. December included the winter solstice, when we had just under seven and a half hours of daylight in Holmesfield. However, as I write this piece in early January, we have an extra 14 minutes of daylight and by the end of January we will have one hour and 25 minutes more. So whilst we will probably still be in lockdown at the end of the month, we do at least have the longer days to look forward to as spring approaches. Brian Brown

MOBILE LIBRARY The county’s mobile library service has started operating again on a 4-weekly cycle and will be on a `book and borrow’ system,. This means customers will need to phone to book an appointment and will be able to pick up a maximum of 10 books. Appointment times will last 5 minutes, and for the time being, people will not be able to select their own books by going onto the vehicle. Instead, they will be asked what type of books they like reading and a selection will be made for them so they can pick them up at their allotted time. New safety measures include books which are returned being quarantined for 72 hours and customers being asked to bring their own bags to pick up their books. Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We’ve been working incredibly hard to get services which had to stop due to coronavirus back up and running, ensuring they are safe for our staff and customers. After making some necessary changes to how the service will operate for now, I’m pleased we are in a position where we can re-start this service and reach as many people as possible who I’m sure have missed their regular visits from the mobiles.” To book an appointment, customers should ring 01629 533464. The mobile library will be at 6 Park Rise, Holmesfield between 10.00 and 10.30am (note new times) on Monday 22nd February.

BUS SERVICE UPDATE Holmesfield residents who make use of the No.43 bus service from Sheffield to Chesterfield via Dronfield Woodhouse are advised that a reduced service is now in effect. Stagecoach Yorkshire who operate the service advise that the new timetable reflects that less people are travelling during lockdown. www.derbysbus.info/times/timetables/043C-210124.pdf The No.16 bus service operated by TM Travel between Dronfield and Chesterfield via Holmesfield and Barlow is still operating a reduced service which is unchanged - see timetables printed to the rear of this newsletter. 45

Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY IN HOLMESFIELD AND THE CHURCH OF ST. SWITHIN - PART 3 The information in this series has been drawn from the writings of Bessie Bunker in her published works: ‘Holmesfield - The Story of an Ancient Chapelry’ (1963) and ‘All Their Yesterdays’ (1973). It has been Modified in the light of research from current experts. If anyone can provide additional information or evidence it would be greatly appreciated.

The first church was used throughout the Norman, Tudor and Stuart times and up to the Georgian period. Connections with the Parish of Dronfield and Beauchief Abbey were established. Later the ownership of the church passed from the succession of Lords of the Manor to a group of trustees. In the very earliest days, the “advowsen” was in the hands of the Lord of the Manor. Later, perhaps the by end of the twelfth century, Holmesfield became connected to the Parish of Dronfield, recognising the larger church of St. John the Baptist at Dronfield as the mother church. This could well have been to help provide a priest to take services; our church was referred to as a ‘chapel’. (Holmesfield was not actually a ‘’chapel of ease” to Dronfield as it possessed it’s own independent endowment of Glebe land). In 1399 the rights to the wealthy parish of Dronfield with its several chapels was handed over to Beauchief Abbey. Perhaps in return, the Monastery provided an ordained priest to celebrate Mass at Holmesfield. The lay-brethren of the Abbey would form a large part of the village community. There was much activity in the village associated with the movement and storage of wool and fleeces and also of iron ore, both of which were eventually processed at the Abbey. In 1402, the Abbey was instituted ‘rector’ of the Parish having official responsibility for the conduct of all services, including the daughter chapels. An Act passed that year required that the vicar (officiating priest) must be a secular person, This meant that the monastery could not remove him at will. A perpetual vicarage was created in Dronfield and a perpetual curacy for the Chapelry of Holmesfield. The overall responsibility for the parish continued to be held by the Abbey until the dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536. In 1486, the manor of Holmesfield was granted by the Crown to Sir John Savage following the death of Francis Lord Lovell who was found guilty of treason. The earliest surviving records date from this time. Successive members of the Savage family who inherited the manor did not seem interested in the “Chapel of Holmesfield” and in 1581, another John Savage offered the church to the people if they could raise the sum of £43. Permanent ownership of the church then passed to the copyholders who became the Trustees. He then sold the manor to Sir John Manners in 1586. It was in this same year as the sale to the copyholders (1581) that the records tell of Star Chamber proceedings – it seems that the Lord’s steward, a Robert Fanshawe, was not of a mind with these copyholders! In 1649, part of John Frechville’s “assessed” property was bought to secure a yearly income for a minister to serve at Holmesfield. Previous curates had enjoyed private means and the provision of a reasonable stipend (a fixed regular sum paid as a salary or as expenses) was needed. Next time - Part 4: The 1700s 49

ST. SWITHIN’S CHURCH Sadly, St. Swithin’s remains closed on Sundays in February (in order to help prevent the spread of Covid-19). If anyone would like to come into the church for some peace, quiet and prayer the vicar or church warden can arrange for the church to be opened for you. Pastoral visits from the vicar are also possible if you or a relative are in need of support and when we agree the benefits outweigh the risks. Online Sunday services are broadcast at 10am on our YouTube channel:

www.youtube.com/dwhparish Our weekly church newsletter can be delivered to you. We continue to keep Holmesfield parishioners (that’s you!) in our prayers.

A‘magic lantern’slide showing a distant figure on the main path through Holmesfield Park Wood approximately 100 years ago. Although instantly recognisable even today, the small holly bushes seen here have grown considerably over time!
