DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL COVID-19 ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to self-isolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT HELPLINE Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust recognises the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our communities and the impact that the pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of people in Derbyshire. It has launched a new telephone-based support line for local people of all ages and their carers who are experiencing increased distress or anxiety during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new service also intends to support people who are experiencing a reduction in their usual mental health care services, as a result of changes that have been made to support the pandemic. The support line, which will initially be available between the hours of 9am – midnight every day of the week can be contacted on 0300 790 0596. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The Parish Council meeting on 11th November 2020 was cancelled due to the second lockdown. As a result there are no planning applications to review this month. The meeting on 9th December should be able to go ahead subject to further Government announcements.
CORONATION DATE STONE Unbeknownst to many villagers, a modest Queen Elizabeth Coronation date stone is located in the church wall by the Angel Inn car park. Neglected and hidden from view by many years of ivy growth it was rediscovered by Robin Greetham who ensured the ivy was cut back to reveal the stone again. We are grateful to Alison Smith who has cleaned the stone so it now looks as pristine as it did in 1953 when it was installed. Please look out for it when you are next walking past the Angel!

One recent trend is that there has been a number of courier fraud type incidents reported to us and we would like people to be reminded about not giving bank or sensitive details out over the phone. A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW VICAR OF HOLMESFIELD Hello, I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Rev. Ian Webb, the new vicar of Holmesfield Parish. It is wonderful to be here, even if it is such a strange and difficult time to have arrived. Before the November lockdown I’d made good on my promise to be seen in the local pubs (well you’ve got to get to know your parishioners!) and one lady in The Angel even remarked that clearly “I had meant it” when I said I was just as comfortable in the pub as in the church. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean the clergy of the Church of England have gone to the dogs! Jesus, you might know, was criticised by the establishment for hanging out with publicans. (I suppose I should be honest and say that the meaning of the word publican is better translated as tax collector.) But the point is this: I believe in and try to follow the God who is to be found among ordinary people. Not shut away in a temple or church. This year of all years we know what is to be shut away. And we know it is not natural; not human. We are made for relationship and community. Whatever your views on the relaxation of restrictions over the festive period, the fact of the matter is that Christmas should never be something celebrated in isolation. For the heart of Christmas is the great gift of ‘God with us’, (in the Hebrew language: Immanuel), God in Jesus, in amongst the people. In a stable belonging to a pub landlord. Eating and drinking together with us around our family dining tables. With us in the pain, grief, separation and loneliness of this year. With us in the joyous vaccination, resurrection and recovery of 2021. Holding us and bringing us together with peace and glad tidings of great joy. I look forward to seeing you “in the flesh” (Latin: incarnation – Google it!) and around the village in the coming weeks. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION November’s meeting was postponed until December due to lockdown and will take place on Wednesday 2nd December in Holmesfield Village Hall at 7.30 am. Roger Webb will be presenting a videoed interview with Mr Tom Salt recalling life in Holmesfield including his wartime experiences in the Holmesfield Home Guard during WW2. This was planned as a follow on from Nick Wheat’s talk in October on ‘ Holmesfield Bygones’. The original speaker was Mr Roger Hart who will now be giving his talk on Gardening in Lockdown in January – many apologies for the ongoing rearrangements of speakers but I am sure our members will understand that we feel it’s important to keep going through all the current problems and appreciate everyone’s support. HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP HOLMESFIELD WALK On Wednesday 9th December at 10.00am, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from Holmesfield church car park. We will walk through the wood down to Fanshawegate Lane then up to Lydgate, down Horsleygate Lane to Cartledge and back to the Angel for lunch, but due to the pandemic we may not be allowed in. The walk is approx. 4 miles long but a shortcut is available. If you would like to come just turn up on the day but check with Robin before hand to make sure the walk is still going ahead as these are very uncertain times. HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL NEWS
Despite what continues to be a difficult time for all, Penny Acres Primary School remains a fabulous place to be and a point of normality in a time that is far from normal. Morale is good amongst pupils, staff and the parent body, and we continue to receive the upmost of support from all of our stakeholders. Put simply, school is ‘business as usual’, something the staff and I have worked very hard to re-establish. If you were to visit school now, it wouldn’t look or feel too different to the school you knew before lockdown. This has not been easy to create and it is down to the continued support of my staff and the shared vision between school and home that this has been possible. Despite the obvious restrictions, we have enjoyed the following: • KS2 played host to an Egyptologist for the day. His wealth of knowledge was second to none and the children thoroughly enjoyed listening to his teaching, particularly the part where some children were mummified! • Penny Acres has welcomed a new resident. ‘Penny’ the bearded dragon has been with us for three weeks now and has settled well into school life. The children are learning all about her habitat, her species, how to care for her and most importantly, discovering how much she likes to be handled and interacted with. • Year 1 and 2 took part in a ‘Fundamentals’ activity session in partnership with Qualitas, our partner in sport. A super time was had by all and it felt good to get out and about with the children. • KS2 are rocking the Calypso vibe with the introduction of this year’s Music Partnership instrument, the steel drums! A sure fire way to brighten up a Friday morning. Things we are looking forward to: • Despite the Covid-19 situation, the Christmas show must go on! Our children are currently working on this year’s Christmas performance, which will be recorded and made available to parents. Expect the traditional nativity story, enhanced with the usual, superb Penny Acres singing and dancing. • Christmas jumper day on Friday 11th December. We’re expecting the usual festivities. • School Christmas dinner on Wednesday 16th December and our usual Christmas party on Friday 18th December. DRIVERS URGED TO BE DEER AWARE At this time of year, deer collisions peak as many of the animals cross roads seeking new territories. The highest risk of collisions is between sunset and midnight, and the hours shortly before and after sunrise. Ashley Knott, Derbyshire police’s Traffic Management officer, explains: “Wild animals have no road sense. Signs to warn drivers are placed at locations where the animals are known to be active and are likely to cross. Our advice is to slow down and anticipate the risk. This will give you more time to react should deer be on or alongside the road.” Motorists are asked to be alert wherever they are travelling across Derbyshire’s road network, not just on rural roads. In recent years, incidents involving deer and other livestock have been reported on major routes too. Highways England has teamed up with The Deer Initiative to give the following advice to drivers, involved in a collision with a deer: If you hit a deer when driving, your priorities in this order are: • keep yourself and anyone with you as safe as you can • park your car in the safest place with hazard lights on • call an ambulance if human injuries warrant it • call the police, giving as precise a location as you can Usually it is best not to approach live deer. Doing so may cause them to run across traffic causing another accident. If you see an injured deer on the roadside: • pull over at the next safe place. • call the police and we will deal with road safety issues. We also have access to a specialist who will know the best course of action for the animal if it is alive. Ashley Knott continues: “There are several things drivers can do to reduce the risk when travelling around dawn or dusk. If your headlights are on, use full-beams when you can, but dip them if you see deer as they may ‘freeze’ on the spot instead of leaving the road. Also, if you see a deer, look out for others. HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE The ink had not long dried on the last newsletter when we were all ordered into lockdown 2.0. The volunteers kicked into action with pharmacy runs back to a daily level. However, it appears that the pharmacies and supermarkets are a bit better organised this time and there hasn’t been as much demand for the team’s services but the service offer is still there should you require it. A special thank-you to the members of the team who have been also supporting those that have required lifts to hospital and doctors appointments. A few people have asked that this is mentioned and recognised as a real act of kindness, so ‘thank you’! Kings College in London are continuing to collect daily data from over 4.4 million people in the UK. If you would like to sign up to the reporting app you can do so at covid.joinzoe.com. They ask if you can self-report your symptoms every day, even if you are feeling well. It is not a track and trace system but they do provide you with up to date reports. The graph shows the estimated cases based on self reporting in North East Derbyshire as at 23rd November. Their latest research published tells us; • 82% of people who tested positive experience one or more of the typical symptoms • 60% of all age groups did not report fever • 55% of 18-65 year olds reported lost of smell (this is the most predictive symptom of Covid) • 26% of over 65 year olds reported loss of smell • 21% of under 18 year olds reported loss of smell • 49% of people aged 18-65 reported a sore throat (a sore throat on its own does not indicate Covid) • Fever, when it occurs, only occurs in the early phases but disappears early on. Halloween Pumpkin Trail & Remembrance Sunday We had no idea that this activity would be so successful! Everyone made such an effort to dress up their walls, gateways, gardens and doorsteps with pumpkins as just a starter for 10! Despite the awful weather in the morning of Halloween, the village was busy all afternoon with families walking around with their children, grandchildren and friends visiting the gateways and collecting the treats that so many people in the village put out for the children. Lots of people commented on what a special day it was, and the village really did shine. Thank you all for your support. 27
Thanks to the Shepley’s for the haunted walk through the woods and the warm cider charity table at the bottom! The soldier’s memorials were a lovely reminder to every one of those who fought during the war. There were lots pebbles and poppies placed on the memorials. These will be collected and kept in a safe place until next year. The church held a small service (socially distancing outside) and Jack one of the oldest soldiers in the village made a special appearance. . Christmas Plans: Here are a few great activities planned to brighten up the dark December month! As always we need your support! • Light Up Holmesfield: we are encouraging those of you that can to decorate your gardens, doors, windows, tree etc. etc. and brighten up our village this Christmas. Lidl, Aldi and Home Bargains – to name but a few – have some great deals on lights. • Christmas Raffle – we would like to raise some funds so that we can pay for some of the activities through the year. All of the details are on the advert, but great prizes to be won! And funding raising will be managed by the Holmesfield Village Charitable Trust on behalf of the Holmesfield Support Group. • Santa Claus and Christmas Carols. 28
The Christmas tree will be going up the weekend of the 5th December – special thanks to the Village Society for their donation of the tree to the village. The plan is that there will be a Christmas Carol event on the 20th December at 4pm. Details will be finalised once we are out of lockdown but the plan at this stage is that people will be able to join in from their gardens and doorsteps, or socially distancing on the Main road. We will let people know final details via signs in village, whatsApp and Facebook. Finally, thank you as always to our volunteers both in the support group and those of you who help with the activities in the village. In November we raised £45 through donations and £40 from Kilner’s Halloween cake donations, thank you very much for your continued support. HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB
Like many cricket clubs the Holmesfield CC AGM is usually a predictable affair with little or no change from one season to another. However this year is the exception to the rule with several changes to the club’s hierarchy! Long serving Chairman Tom Pearson stood down from the role in order to bring in some ‘younger blood’ in the form of John Barber, a mere ‘spring chicken’ at fifty-eight! Tommy has stepped into the vacant role of President alongside newly appointed vice-presidents – Stuart Huckerby, Ron Barton, Pete Wardley and Rachel Pearson. Rachel being honoured for all her hard work over the years for the club and being a ‘cricket widow’, something many of the player’s partners can sympathise with. Tony Brown’s appointment as treasurer was confirmed following the retirement of Stuart Huckerby earlier in the year. Meanwhile there was no change in the roles as Club Captain – Jimmy Pearson, Junior Co-Ordinator - Antony Bolsover and Child Protection Officer – Adam Kilner. Following many years of service to the club Pete Wardley – ‘Wad’ – has decided to step down from his role as 1st team scorer. A good scorer is worth his weight in gold and Pete will be missed not only for his commitment to the role but for his forthright opinions when players fall below the club’s standards and need reminding of what’s expected. Pete was presented with an engraved walking stick to serve as a reminder of the club’s appreciation of his service both as a player and official. Support for the 100 Club this year has been fantastic especially bearing in mind we had ‘total lockdown’ when asking for your support. The final regular draw for the year took place in September and the winner was Pete Wardley (no.154) – retiring and taking the money with him, that’s the way to do it! In addition, we have had two bonus draws for £50 each in order to thank everybody for their support over the year, the following numbers were drawn: 96 – Maureen Turner & 168 – Tom Outram Meanwhile HCC are already planning for the next cricket season! We are looking to recruit some additional players for our two senior teams in the Derbyshire County League. 37

1st XI: Our first XI play in Division 3N so players need to be of a standard to compete at this level. 2nd XI: We are entering a 2nd XI senior team into the league for the first time next season so are playing in Division 9N of the Derbyshire County League. The requirement for a second senior team on Saturdays is very much a product of the success of the Junior Section. As the older players in the junior teams look to improve their game there is a natural progression into senior cricket and as a club we need to ensure it can be achieved without players looking elsewhere for opportunities. A small number of senior players will support the progression of the younger ones and help them through what can seem to be a daunting challenge. Regular competitive games will see players grow and be ready for 1st team cricket when opportunities arise whether that be with Holmesfield or at a higher standard. Our seniors also play in the Chesterfield midweek league which welcomes players of all levels. Our ladies need not feel left out as ladies team has been entered into the 8 a-side ‘Softball’ league. This is the same format as the games played this year so it will be familiar. This is a step into the unknown for the club but I am sure that the enthusiasm shown this year will see us make a great success of it. Although this is a natural progression for any team, we appreciate that not all people will want to be thrown straight into a competitive league environment so at the same time we will try to arrange ‘Friendly’ fixtures and practice matches against other teams over the coming season. Please spread the word around and let’s boost participation in ladies cricket. For the first time in many years, we are delighted to be entering a team into the U15 North East Derbyshire league. We are looking to recruit some new players for the U15 team and welcome enthusiastic players of all abilities. Winter net training is planned for Saturdays from February and in season training every Friday evening at the HCC ground We are a friendly, family orientated and competitive club with excellent facilities. OCTOBER 2020 WEATHER October was cool and rather wet. Putting this into numbers, the average temperature was 9.1°C, about one degree below normal, and the rainfall was 125mm, which is 60% more than normal. There were 25 days of rain and on three days about one inch of rain fell. According to the Met. Office, the 3rd October was the UK’s wettest day since records began in 1881. The average over the UK was 37.1mm but I only recorded 25mm on that day, so perhaps we were fortunate. My rainfall for the 3rd October was consistent with other local weather stations, including the one at Weston Park in Sheffield. You can get quite surprising differences in rainfall readings depending upon where a rain gauge is placed. If you put it on top of a chimney, then the rainfall recorded may be only 80% of what you would record close to the ground. The higher up a rain gauge is placed the lower the reading. A man called Heberden in 1769 compared readings from his chimney top with those from near to the ground and also on the roof of Westminster Abbey. The chimney only caught 80% of the rain and the Abbey 50%. How come? The answer is the wind. The wind has to speed up over an object and so the raindrops will be further apart. Proper Meteorological Office rain gauges are placed at ground level. People have been trying to record rainfall for centuries. There is mention of containers to collect and measure rainfall in India from the 4th century BC and the Chinese distributed rain gauges that were used to predict crop growth in the 13th century. Of course you have to empty a rain gauge at regular intervals otherwise it may overflow or evaporation may lead to underestimation of the rainfall. Modern rain gauges use a small tipping bucket that can record each small amount of rain. To my surprise I have read that Sir Christopher Wren was the inventor of the tipping bucket recorder in 1662. He connected it to a clockwork mechanism to record how many times the bucket emptied. My rain gauge uses a tipping bucket in a see-saw arrangement that records electronically in fractions of a mm of rain. The first continuous recording of rainfall was made by a man called Richard Towneley between 1677 and 1703. He lived in Burnley, Lancashire, and put a funnel on the roof of his house with a pipe that led to a cylinder inside. He was a student in Paris where he also recorded the rainfall and commented that the rainfall was only half that of Burnley. My only other comment on our October weather is that there were only 13 hours of bright sunshine. As it was also wet and cold it seemed to be a rather drab month. Brian Brown 41

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY IN HOLMESFIELD AND THE CHURCH OF ST. SWITHIN - PART 1 The information in this series has been drawn from the writings of Bessie Bunker in her published works: ‘Holmesfield - The Story of an Ancient Chapelry’ (1963) and ‘All Their Yesterdays’ (1973). It has been Modified in the light of research from current experts. If anyone can provide additional information or evidence it would be greatly appreciated.
The earliest settlers in Holmesfield were Neolithic folk, flint fragments and remains have been discovered at various sites throughout the parish. The first agriculturalists were the Anglian settlers who arrived in the 5th century. Early Christianity only reached areas of Roman settlement, so this hilltop may well have been the site where their timber heathen temple was built. This is the site of our church in Holmesfield. The early history is the subject of much speculation and little proof! In 641AD, bands of monks travelled from Aidan’s monastery at Lindisfarne through the kingdom of Northumbria to Mercia. (Our parish occupies the area that was the northern border of the Kingdom of Mercia). It is thought that as the folk were converted to Christianity, the temple was blessed and consecrated for Christian use. It was the custom for monks to erect a Cross at a meeting place where they would preach. At first, this was made from a felled tree. Years later, as Christianity was accepted by the people, expert stonecarvers from the Monastery community would have replaced this wooden cross by a stone one. The remains of an ancient cross, believed to be Saxon, can be seen outside our church. It was damaged during the Reformation and has been converted into a sundial. St. Swithin (the name was originally spelt Swithhun meaning ‘strong bear-cub’) was a trusted friend and advisor to King Ecgbert, his son King Aethelwulf and grandson, King Alfred. He had a tremendous beneficial influence on developments in England including the reforms carried out by King Alfred. An important event in English history took place in 829AD, when Ecgbert, King of Mercia, led his men along the border of Mercia to Dore, where King Eanred and his Northumbrians waited. The Iatter offered obedience and allegiance so there was no battle. The treaty that was signed was the event which made England one Kingdom. Swithin taught Aethelwulf in his youth. When King, he made Swithin Bishop of Winchester, which was the capital at that time. He was a revered Bishop, renowned for his interest and skill in building in stone. Swithin was a man of piety and learning. He was buried where he had asked, outside the west wall of his cathedral so that the feet of his people could pass over him and the rain from the eaves fall on his grave. He died in 862AD and was canonised by popular acclaim around 931AD. According to tradition, if it rains on Saint Swithin’s bridge in Winchester on his feast day (15th July) it will continue for forty days and forty nights. The use of stone (of which we have plenty), had been encouraged by Swithin and Alfred’s reforms which promoted local leaders (ceorls) who acquired various specified properties to become ’Thegns’, (Lords). These included building a church in stone with a belfry, a mill, a brewery and a bakehouse. The Angel Inn was the old brewing house for the Lord of the Manor, the bakehouse was at Cartledge and the mill was in Millthorpe. The origin of the church as property of the Lord of the Manor is certain because Holmesfield had a Thegn many years before the Norman conquest and so it can be suggested that a church is likely to have been built at that time.
