DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL COVID-19 ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to self-isolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. Links to Government and NHS advice on Coronavirus and self isolation are available on the county council’s website: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/coronavirus (the relevant landing page is pinned to the top of the home page) Please only take advice about Coronavirus from official channels and avoid potentially erroneous and unverifiable advice on social media. www.gov.uk : www.nhs.uk 7

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL BREAK IN We are sorry to have to report that Holmesfield Village Hall was broken into and vandalised on 26th September 2020 and a considerable amount of damage was sustained. The Police have identified two local children as the culprits and we are assured that they are being dealt with in the appropriate manner. We express our thanks to the resident on Main Road who made us aware of the issue and to our Caretaker, Lucy Perry, for attending the call out and her considerable efforts in cleaning and getting the hall fit for use again.

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered. 11

HOLMESFIELD COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH We now have six volunteers for the community speed watch in Holmesfield and since commencing in August we have managed to monitor vehicle speeds on Main Road and New Road. The monitoring has principally been checking on traffic passing the school on Main Road in both directions but has also included traffic entering Millthorpe from Barlow and Holmesfield from Dronfield. The Police request that only those found to be travelling over 10% +2mph over the 30mph limit are to be recorded. It is also a requirement that we wear yellow hi-viz vests and place signage, prominently displayed advertising the speed watch and yet many vehicles are even then found to be speeding. The monitoring has been taking place early morning and around 4pm, with the average number of vehicles passing through the speed watch in 1 hour as 240. Each driver found to be exceeding the 35mph, will in the first instance be sent a letter advising them of being found to be exceeding the speed limit. Any further exceedance of speed limits (anywhere in Derbyshire) will have one further letter followed by a visit by the Police. The results have been very consistent in that the number of vehicles found by the speed watch team to be travelling at speeds in excess of 35mph in the 30mph zone is approximately 12%. These excess speeds range from 36mph to 53mph. While the Community speed watch was monitoring speeds in Millthorpe we were given access to detailed longer term monitoring of vehicle speeds on New Road. It appears from that information that 35% of all vehicles were travelling above 35mph. From this we could conclude that the community speed watch does reduce vehicle speeds when visible monitoring is taking place . The objective of the Community Speed watch is to try and educate drivers to travel within acceptable speeds in the village. For us to carry out frequent monitoring more volunteers are needed – if you are concerned with speeding vehicles in the village why not join the speed watch team. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION At our October meeting, chairperson Robin Greetham started by congratulating Hilary Olsen - our Garden and Social Events Organiser on the Association’s successful coach trip to Doddington Hall. There was a very nice garden to enjoy and although it rained later there was the Hall to visit and several shops & cafes to enjoy. We also met with Denise Eardley, our former member, who now lives in the area. Altogether it was a very enjoyable visit. Unfortunately, the planned talk by Dr. Steven Furniss for our October meeting was cancelled due to ill health so we were fortunate in having a talk from Nick Wheat of Holmesfield Village Society who very kindly stepped in at the last minute to save the day. The presentation featured a history of the ‘Holmesfield Society for the Prosecution of Felons’ which was created before the establishment of a police force and offered rewards for information on crimes. Their meetings seem to have been followed by enjoyable dinners in various local inns. This was followed by various slides of places and people from the village covering a century or more of the history of Holmesfield. Some of the people were well known to villagers present. Nick is hoping to expand his collection of photographs if anyone can help. A question and answer session followed with many relevant memories and details emerging. Although the evening was more about people who may have been gardeners in the past rather than the present it was very much enjoyed and Nick’s talk was very much appreciated. For the next meeting on Wednesday 4th November from 7.30pm in Holmesfield Village Hall, Roger Webb will present films of residents of Holmesfield speaking about their memories of the area including Mr Dick Shepley and Tom Salt. Mr Salt has sadly passed away but recalls his experiences of being in Holmesfield Home Guard during the 2nd World War. The speaker for December remains the same and the talk will be “Gardening in the Time of Covid” by Roger Hart. As before in these difficult times, please check with Hilary if you wish to attend any of our meetings as we can only seat 21 people safely distanced in the Village. Her telephone number is 0114 2890927. Frances Webb

As ever, please keep safe. 21

It is now possible for you to get in touch with Derbyshire Constabulary in a range of different ways, to report non-emergencies. The usual method remains by dialing 101 by telephone but if you don’t want to speak to someone on the phone, you can send us a message on social media, use our website, or speak to a call handler on Live Chat. This will then free up our call handlers to answer the phones to those that would prefer to physically speak to someone. Our team of helpful call handlers are here for the people of Derbyshire 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The links you can use to get in touch digitally are: Facebook: Send a message to us on www.facebook.com/derbyshireconstabulary Twitter: Send a direct message to our contact centre via www.twitter.com/derpolcontact Website: Use our online forms and Live Chat by visiting www.derbyshire.police.uk

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE Happy November issue everyone! Lots of new rules since we last wrote. Here is a quick summary of the latest restrictions for Tier 2 (NE Derbyshire area). Social Contact: 1 household/bubble indoors. Rule of 6 outdoors. Hospitality (includes all local pubs): Open, all table service, 10pm closing time. Shops & retail: Open Worship: Open, subject to social contract rules. Healthcare services: Open It is very important that people continue to visit their GP even during restrictions, there have been lots of reports that potential patients have been avoiding seeking medical advice because they want to protect the NHS from being overwhelmed. The latest guidance is that you should visit your dentist or your GP if you have any concerns. The hospitality venues in our village are definitely open and need your support over the next few weeks. The Rutland, George & Dragon, the Angel and the Royal Oak have all been very busy ensuring that we can visit whilst still adhering to the socially distancing rules. The Angel are also doing takeaway meals Monday – Friday. If you are isolating or need some help should NE Derbyshire go into a higher Tier please contact the buddies we set up during the first lockdown or your local network volunteer. Other Village updates: Halloween 2020: Don’t forget the Big Neighbourhood Pumpkin Trail! We’ve seen some great decorations outside homes, well done all. Don’t miss the haunted tree at the entrance to Castle Hill as seen on the front cover – very creative! For the trail don’t forget to put a pumpkin or decorations in your window, outside your home, in the middle of your garden, on top of your roof …wherever you can so that it can be seen! Don’t forget to send your pumpkin location to the team email: holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com – we will be putting the trail on the WhatsApp group and on Facebook. www.facebook.com/holmesfield2020

Remembrance Day: Hopefully by now you will have seen the Remembrance Soldiers these have now been placed at the Millthorpe Memorial, Millennium Gardens, the Crescent, and outside the school. Don’t forget if you can paint a poppy on a pebble and place it at one of these locations or on the unmarked soldier’s grave in the church yard. The poppies have also now been put up around the village – thank you to all our volunteers for your support. It is with a heavy heart that the Holmesfield Local Market team have made a decision to cancel the Christmas Market. It was just becoming too difficult to organise with the constant change in rules. The markets will be back! Keep an eye out on WhatsApp and Facebook page for updates on activities and local information. Take care all, keep washing your hands, keep your distance and please wear a mask! Aoife & the Holmesfield Support Network

Due to COVID restrictions the numbers attending will be limited. The church will be open and the service relayed inside to a restricted number of people who wish to take part but will not want to stand outside in the cold. Members of the public are legally permitted to stop and watch the event as spectators, but must observe the rule of 6 and social distancing rules and give their names and contact numbers for contact tracing purposes.

HOLMESFIELD ST SWITHIN’S MUMS & TODDLER GROUP NEW VENUE: The Toddler group has now moved over to the new church hall adjacent to St Swithin’s church. All the toys have been sorted, washed and transferred to the hall ready to go. We were hoping for the group to start up again in September, however due to present government and Church of England restrictions, this will not be possible until after Christmas. We will keep you updated if there are further changes. Christine Taylor

DOMESTIC ABUSE HELP STILL AVAILABLE Victims of domestic abuse are being reminded that support is still available to them 24 hours a day, despite the current coronavirus pandemic. In Derbyshire there are a variety of organisations that can help support domestic abuse victims – no matter their situation. Detective Chief Inspector Brian Bilby, Derbyshire Constabulary’s lead for domestic abuse, said: “While many things have changed in light of the current crisis one thing remains the same – that the force and our partners remain committed to protecting the victims of domestic abuse. If you are in a situation where you are fearful for your life you should call 999 immediately – no matter the time of day. If, however, if that is not the case you are still a victim and should report the abuse that you are suffering by contacting us with a private message to the main force Facebook (@ derbyshireconstabulary) and Twitter account (@Derpolcontact). These are monitored 24/7 and you will receive the same service as if you were calling the non-emergency 101.

“DERBYSHIRE TALKING” SURVEY Derbyshire Constabulary and The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner are carrying out a survey with local communities. This is important and they would like to hear your views. Your opinions will influence the community engagement and delivery of services within your area. They want to better understand what’s great and what’s not so great about where people live so they can work with residents to help tackle any worries and issues that you may have.. www.derbyshirealert.co.uk/derbyshiretalking

SPEAK OUT ON CRIME AND SAFETY IN DERBYSHIRE A major survey has been unveiled yesterday to gather public feedback on crime and policing across Derbyshire. Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa is urging people to take part in his ‘Listening to You’ 2020-21 consultation to help him better understand the needs and priorities of the county’s communities. The survey asks residents how safe they feel, whether they are satisfied with local policing and how worried they are about certain categories of crime. It also asks whether local police are doing enough to fight crime in their local area and whether they are aware of the county’s ‘one stop shop’ CORE website which provides a portal of services for victims of crime. Mr Dhindsa said; “These surveys result in positive and proactive action to address the matters which cause people misery and this is something I would like to stress. From previous surveys and my continuous engagement meetings with local residents, I have funded new services and solutions to problems which impact on quality of life. The point is that by providing feedback and opinions, local people can help shape future decisions on where we invest funding and in doing so greatly influence safety across their communities which is good news for everybody. My job as Commissioner is to listen and take action on the concerns of local people and I do. But I need to know the full extent of the problems to help me find solutions.” The ‘Listening to You’ survey is the county’s largest policing questionnaire. The information influences the PCC and Chief Constable’s safety plans, enabling them to match resources to areas of greatest need. www.derbyshire-pcc.gov.uk/Listening2U 35

MOBILE LIBRARY The county’s mobile library service has started operating again on a 4-weekly cycle and will be on a `book and borrow’ system,. This means customers will need to phone to book an appointment and will be able to pick up a maximum of 10 books. Appointment times will last 5 minutes, and for the time being, people will not be able to select their own books by going onto the vehicle. Instead, they will be asked what type of books they like reading and a selection will be made for them so they can pick them up at their allotted time. New safety measures include books which are returned being quarantined for 72 hours and customers being asked to bring their own bags to pick up their books. Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We’ve been working incredibly hard to get services which had to stop due to coronavirus back up and running, ensuring they are safe for our staff and customers. After making some necessary changes to how the service will operate for now, I’m pleased we are in a position where we can re-start this service and reach as many people as possible who I’m sure have missed their regular visits from the mobiles.” To book an appointment, customers should ring 01629 533464. The mobile library will be at 6 Park Rise, Holmesfield between 10.00 and 11.00am (note new times) on Mondays 2nd & 30th November.

SEPTEMBER 2020 WEATHER Our September weather this year was about normal in most respects. The average temperature was 13.2°C but there were a lot of easterly winds that made it feel cool. However, it was fairly dry with only just over half the expected rainfall. September 22nd was of course the autumn equinox when we had exactly 12 hours of daylight. Paul Hudson on the TV announced that the sun crossed the equator at 2.30pm on the 22nd. It is the time when the sun illuminates the northern and southern hemispheres equally. The warmest day of the month was on Tuesday 15th when the maximum temperature was 26.8°C (80.2°F), but we missed that warmth as we were staying down at Instow in North Devon for a few days. We experienced a ‘fret’ that day, but when I remarked on this to the hotel staff they did not understand me. ‘Fret’ or ‘Sea fret’ is described in my Oxford English Dictionary as ‘North English’ for a sea mist or fog. This probably explains why the word was not recognised down south in Devon. I think that meteorologists use the words ‘haar’ or ‘sea fog’ – it is caused by warm air being cooled and so condensing over the sea and then drifting as fog onto the land. A fret makes me feel miserable as the visibility is usually very poor and the air is both very cold and damp. Scarborough suffers from fairly frequent sea frets. However, on the 15th we got away from the sea fret on the coast of North Devon by driving inland to the RHS gardens at Rosemoor near Torrington. The 10 miles was sufficient to take us into bright sunshine. So, September was a pleasant enough month, with more than the average number of hours of bright sunshine (128 hours) and not very much rain. There was no sea fret! Neither, did we experience any storms, nor did we have any frost to start turning the colour of the leaves on the trees. The minimum temperature during September was 4.3°C on the 26th. Brian Brown

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686).

ALL DOG OWNERS Dog fouling issues are the worst they have ever been in Holmesfield. Most people take poo bags out with then and remove it, but others give all dog owners a bad name by leaving it. The irresponsible ones do not use poo bags, they go out under the cover of darkness and think picking it up does not apply to them. Some go out in broad daylight and leave a mess on footpaths used by the children on their way to school.

No. 8 Main Road , Holmesfield c.1900 kindly supplied many years ago by Connie Chandler. This is across the road from the old vicarage and it performed a variety of functions over the years as it was once a smithy, shop, post office, cobblers and even housed the village fire engine in its garage for a time!
