CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to selfisolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. POLICE REPORTS Two members of the public and PCSO Jonathan Flower attended the September Parish Council meeting addressing widespread concerns over recent incidents of criminal damage and thefts, in the Parish and neighbouring villages. Following this a public meeting took place on Saturday 12th September 2020 between residents, Lee Rowley MP and the local Police. Councillor Huckerby was thanked for her part in arranging this. POLICE SPEED CHECKS PC Field and PCSO Flower undertook speed checks over several evenings in mid-September with relation to speeding vehicles through Holmesfield. In total 20 cars were stopped. Appropriate advice was given, action taken and reminders about how speed can cause accidents and injuries.

PUBLIC MEETING REPORT Mark Timperley reports that our local member of Parliament - Lee Rowley - and members of Dronfield police SNT - PC Matthew and PCSO Flower attended Holmesfield village hall on Saturday 13th September to discuss local issues - see front cover. There was quite a good turn out of residents. It was reported that patrols have been increased using a mixture of marked patrol vehicles and some covert vehicles. Lee Rowley stressed that this area wasn’t being targeted any more than any other. Actually Holmesfield is low for crime but he did stress that everything should be reported through the correct channels so records show the true figures. The police recognised that residents were uneasy with the current crime levels but gave reassurance they were dealing with it. They knew that a patrol had been operating in the area to deter crime and appreciated our efforts. But they asked we report to them rather than getting involved with criminals. Residents were advised not to use the Dronfield Police SNT Facebook page for reporting crime as it is not monitored all the time. PCSO Flower commented that in respect of the concerns raised over the past few weeks, it’s been well reported about activities in the local area especially in respect of concerns about garden furniture and other incidents in the local and surrounding area to Holmesfield. Its important to be reminded about the number of different agencies from the police such as rural crime team, North East Derbyshire response teams, Safer Neighbourhood team not to mention other official bodies including Lee Rowley MP, Parish and District councils and other involved agencies are working together within your community. Its also important to think as a local resident what actions you may be able to take in respect of your home security, neighbourhood watch and the importance of reporting incidents that may occur to the appropriate authority.

CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT HELPLINE Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust recognises the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our communities and the impact that the pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of people in Derbyshire. It has launched a new telephone-based support line for local people of all ages and their carers who are experiencing increased distress or anxiety during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE Horsleygate Lane, Holmesfield will be closed from 28th October to 2nd November 2020 between a point 50 metres south of its junction with the B6054 Main Road for a distance of 70 metres in a south westerly direction to facilitate water apparatus renewal works. The advertised diversion route is via Millthorpe Lane. Access will be maintained, whenever reasonably possible, on the affected length of road. The road will re-open as soon as the work is finished which may be earlier than advertised. Derbyshire County Council apologises for any inconvenience caused while work takes place. Anyone needing further information should ring Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190. The County Council intends to make/has made an Order under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended) to prohibit its use by traffic. HOLMESFIELD ST SWITHIN’S MUMS & TODDLER GROUP NEW VENUE: The Toddler group has now moved over to the new church hall adjacent to St Swithin’s church. All the toys have been sorted, washed and transferred to the hall ready to go. We were hoping for the group to start up again in September, however due to present government and Church of England restrictions, this will not be possible until after Christmas. HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL LOTTERY
The Penny Acres Lottery is continuing where it left off in March due to a 6 month pause due to Covid 19 and the closure of school during this time. All renewals have rolled over as no draws were made during this time. Renewal letters are now being sent out to those relevant, if you are a member in the lottery and do not receive a renewal letter by middle of October then you can assume that you are 6 months in credit and will not be contacted until next spring. The children will continue to do the monthly draw via a number generator piece of software on the school computer and winners will get notified as normal each month in the magazine. We always welcome new members, it’s £1 per number per month renewed every 6 months. HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP LATHKILL DALE WALK On Wednesday 7th October at 10 o’clock, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Lathkil hotel in Over Haddon. We will walk down the road to the Dale and then walk up the Dale. We will then take a footpath through to Haddon Grove farm then back along the road to the village where we will stay for lunch (optional). The walk is approx. 4½ miles long. If you would like to come just turn up on the day but check with Robin before hand to make sure the walk is still going ahead as these are very uncertain times. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION The first meeting since lockdown was held socially distanced in Holmesfield Village Hall and was well attended. The talk was Putting the Garden to Bed by Mr Carl Leaman. Carl and his wife Deirdre have run the Millthorpe Nursery for about 4 years. Mr Leaman’s talk was the exact opposite of putting the garden to bed, it was about preparing for the next season, so pruning, mulching, moving plants while the soil is still warm, using the time to put in plants, winter colour and structure such as evergreens, dogwoods and grasses and early bedding plants such as wallflowers and forget-me-nots. So no slacking in the winter! Mr Leaman’s talk was much enjoyed and it was agreed it was a very good start to resuming out meetings. The next meeting at Holmesfield Village Hall will be on 7th October at 7.30pm by Dr. Steve Furness on Troughs and Trough Gardening. Unfortunately it has been necessary to cancel the Pie & Pea Supper and as yet it has not been possible to arrange a speaker for November’s meeting. However Mr. Roger Hart is to give a talk entitled Gardening in the Time of Covid in Holmesfield Village Hall on 2nd December at 7.30 pm which sounds very intriguing. The evening will need to be socially distance and there is only space for 21 people so please check with Hilary our Social Organiser on 0114 2890927. The coach trip to Doddington Hall is going ahead as planned but due to social distancing on the coach, the fare has had to be adjusted upwards to £20. Additionally, people wanting to go into the Hall need to book online prior to the visit due - again to Covid regulations. On a less serious note, we have a few other community activities that we would like you all to engage in, to keep our spirits high as we go into the winter season! Halloween 2020: a slightly different one to the norm! As many children will be prevented from doing the usual house to house trick or treating we are asking the village to engage in the Big Neighbourhood Pumpkin Trail! All you have to do is stick a pumpkin in your window, outside your home, in the middle of your garden, on top of your roof …wherever you can so that it can be seen! Your pumpkin can be a real one, plastic, wooden, painted stone…be creative (just try to make it look like a pumpkin!) We can create one giant pumpkin trail in our village and children can see how many they can spot over the Halloween weekend. HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE Remembrance Day: This year we would like to create focal points in the community to honour Remembrance Day. The plan will be that there will be several focal points in the village that will demonstrate the community’s way of remembering, these would be Millthorpe Memorial, Millennium Gardens, the unmarked soldiers grave in the church grounds, the Crescent, and outside the school. As Remembrance Day is approaching we are asking if people would paint a poppy onto a pebble and place it at one of these locations. Last year the Holmesfield Local Market team purchased poppies for the village, in the next week the team are aiming to get these poppies out again. As a team they are also doing a fund-raising event in the absence of having the income from the local market to raise £500 to purchase 4 ‘Remembrance’ soldiers. If you would like to make either a donation (this can be public or anonymous) it would be welcome. Please email holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com who will be collecting any donations via Mandy at the Angel Inn or bank to bank transfer. Any donation from £5 to whatever you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Holmesfield Local Market: Unfortunately the local village market on the 10th October has been cancelled. HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB 2020 Having reported our successful start to the season in the last issue, things appear to have ‘Gone South’ as they say. Three consecutive losses in the league saw Holmesfield slide down the table to 5th. Runs were in short supply in recent games with scores of only 180, 87 and 129, well below what we have come to expect from Holmesfield’s usually strong batting line up. Having said that the game against local rivals Hundall was a thrilling encounter with the visitors scoring 183 and Holmesfield falling just short when Clint Nobrega was out in the last over, caught on the boundary going for a ‘Grandstand’ finish with four balls to go. As for the other games against Chesterfield and Darley Dale the only good news was the bowling figures of Archie Crapper with 3-27 off 4 overs against Darley Dale. The home game at the end of August against Clowne was cancelled as was the following week’s against Ashover Barbarians which just left the final game of the season on 12th September at old rivals Hundall. Batting first, the Vill scored 176-7 off their 40 overs and in another tight encounter the hosts scored the winning runs with just one ball to spare as Hundall went on to not only win the fixture but also to win the League so congratulations to them. Junior Cricket: Following the recent events, we were very unsure if we would have a cricket summer at all as a club. But as always, as soon as rules were released by the government, HCC was quick to react. We had a fantastic 5 weeks of ‘pre-season’ nets with groups of 6. Then following further loosening of rules about game play, the league reacted as fast as was logistically possible and games commenced. We started with a strong group of around 40 U11s & U13s which eventually grew to above 65. We entered 6 teams in total with a kwik cricket, 2 incrediball teams and 3 hardball teams. Following the growth of the boys in the initial nets, they took this improvement and enthusiasm into the games and came straight out of the blocks. 33

The U11s enjoyed a great season of cricket. Players adapted brilliantly to the Covid measures, acting sensibly and respectfully at both training and matches. We had teams entered in both the U11 Incrediball league and the U11 Hard ball league this season. There have been some incredible performances and wonderful teamwork. Matches have been enjoyed against Cutthorpe, Coal Aston, Clowne and Chesterfield. It has been great to watch them develop as players and people over the season and with only one player moving upto the U13s next year the players will be far more experienced next season. We look forward to welcoming the players back to Winter Nets in February. Also a big thank you to all our U11 parents who have volunteered throughout the season. The U13s fielded 2 teams, Sunday’s team was ‘out-out’ format, the first time for the boys. This team went well and won all matches up to the final match where the top 2 teams had a head to head for the title and they lost off the penultimate ball! The Tuesday team was a pairs format in which more teams and fixtures were involved. This gave us the opportunity to play all players as the age group now had 27 players. This team performed superbly with a mix of age groups and abilities and all boys helping and encouraging each other throughout the season. This culminated in only 2 losses all season, to the same side, Staveley, in which I saw a well organised and mature strong side, the best I have seen in my 3 years in the league. I hope all participants and parents have enjoyed what HCC have been able to provide in the short busy summer period. We are looking forward to 2021 already! Ladies Cricket Team: We are looking to run a ladies team for next season. The team will play the ‘softball’ version of cricket with 8 players per team. We already have a number of interested players, the more the merrier. MOBILE LIBRARY The county’s mobile library service has started operating again on a 4-weekly cycle and will be on a `book and borrow’ system,. This means customers will need to phone to book an appointment and will be able to pick up a maximum of 10 books. Appointment times will last 5 minutes, and for the time being, people will not be able to select their own books by going onto the vehicle. Instead, they will be asked what type of books they like reading and a selection will be made for them so they can pick them up at their allotted time. New safety measures include books which are returned being quarantined for 72 hours and customers being asked to bring their own bags to pick up their books. Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We’ve been working incredibly hard to get services which had to stop due to coronavirus back up and running, ensuring they are safe for our staff and customers. After making some necessary changes to how the service will operate for now, I’m pleased we are in a position where we can re-start this service and reach as many people as possible who I’m sure have missed their regular visits from the mobiles.” To book an appointment, customers should ring 01629 533464. AUGUST 2020 WEATHER Well the last of the three months of summer did not leave us with many memories of long hours of sunshine and calm gentle weather. Many of my tomatoes are still green, waiting for the right conditions to ripen them. Perhaps it was too much to expect of August, it is frequently a rather wet month. It is often remarked that the weather is poor when the school children are on holiday but it improves into September. Oddly enough, the average temperature this August was almost one degree above normal. The 11th and 12th of August were very warm with a maximum temperature of 30°C (86°F) on both days. So the song ‘One Fine Day’ by The Chiffons in 1963 was not an apt description. We had two fine days! However, the sun did not shine very much on most of the days, so that is perhaps why we thought August was cold. There were far fewer hours of bright sunshine than in every other month since March. May treated us to much more sunshine than August. Just for the record, March had 110 hours of bright sunshine, February had 27 hours and January had none. Storms Ellen and Francis passed over us in August, making it feel a little like late autumn. We had some very wet days and parts of the UK experienced floods. Rainfall was double the normal with about 6 inches in total. The two really wet days were the 16th when 2 inches fell and the 25th when 1½ inches fell. It was my wettest August since 2004. There was an article recently, in the journal Nature, that had looked at the written records of floods around major European rivers over the last 500 years. The authors concluded that there have been several ‘flood rich’ periods in Europe. These were 1560-1580, 1760-1800, 1840-1870 and 1990 to now. It is interesting that the ‘Great Sheffield Flood’, caused by the collapse of the Dale Dyke Dam and resulting in more than 240 deaths, was in 1864. Too much rain can certainly cause problems. There was a recent report in the papers that ‘The cost of bread is forecast to rise, after the effects of a dry summer pushed up the price of wheat by 25% to 30%’. I must say that this summer has not been very dry in Holmesfield, Brian Brown but it was preceded by a very dry spring.

NEW VICAR FOR HOLMESFIELD St. Swithin’s introduces their new minister Rev’d Ian Webb. Ian, Sarah and their family should be moving to Holmesfield in early November. Ian, who hails from Bristol, is returning to familiar territory after 2½ years as priest-incharge of St Mary’s Edwinstowe, All Saints Clipstone, and St John’s Perlethorpe in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. From June 2014 to April 2018 Ian was assistant Curate at St Philip’s Church, Holmesdale and Dronfield Parish Church, and as such is no stranger to Dronfield and District, its churches and its ministry team. Before they were married, Sarah was instrumental in leading Ian to Christ through an Alpha course. They now have three children aged 10, 12, and 14. While at St Philip’s Church, Ian and Sarah assisted in setting up ‘Illumin8’, a monthly Churches Together service for 7-12 year olds. At a time of vastly declining congregations, Ian has a proactive approach to ministry. He says, “There’s a need to get out there and meet people on their own ground. I believe in ministry in coffee shops and pubs. Don’t wait for them to come to church. We need to go to them”. We look forward to welcoming you to Holmesfield, Ian.

Holmesfield Bygones
Former District Nurse, Kate Bedford, is pictured at a village fete c.1977 with Rev’d Michael Fermer who served as the vicar of St. Swithin’s church from 1973 to 1979. It was with sadness that we learned of his passing aged 89 on 11th September 2020. Rev’d Fermer was Vicar of Tamerton Foliot (1959-63); Assistant Chaplain of the United Sheffield Hospitals (1963-64); Senior Chaplain (1964-66); Assistant Master of Thornbridge Secondary School, Sheffield (1966-73); Vicar of Holmesfield (1973-79); Rector of Old Brampton and Loundsley Green (1979-80); Team Rector (1980-83); Vicar of Brightside with Wincobank (1983-89); and finally at Loscoe (1989-94) where he retired in September of that year.
