HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION We held our annual Pie and Pea supper with entertainment on Wednesday 6th November, it was yet again well attended. The pies and puddings were excellent as was the entertainment. As in the last few years we booked the Busking Buddies and a good time was had by all. The next meeting is on Wednesday 4th December at 7.30pm in Holmesfield Village Hall. The speaker will be Jude Warrender and the title is Valuing Wild Flowers. Mince pies, tea and coffee will be available. New comers to the village plus friends of members are welcome to join us at this meeting. Into the New Year and the meeting on 8th January will feature a talk by Dr Steven Furness who will be speaking on Alpine Gardens. JESSIE SMYTHE We are very sad to report the recent death of dear Jessie Smythe. Jessie had a great appreciation of the countryside which probably started when she was a teenager and often went on holiday to Scotland. Jessie had many interests which included tennis and even stonewalling. Many friends were made in England and abroad in various countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada. .Jessie had a great love of Holmesfield and was very active in the village where she was a member of the Village Society, Tangent and of course Holmesfield Gardening Club. Indeed it was largely Jessie that organised the recent pie and pea evening. Her friendship and smiling face will be missed by many people especially her two sons and grandchildren.

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL

As always, Penny Acres Primary School has been a hive of activity with lots going on and our children producing the finest quality of work. Some of our children had this to say.. “On Wednesday, we made parachutes and magnet fishing games in Science. For the magnet fishing games we stuck paper clips to the backs of sea creatures. We then stuck a magnet to the end of some string. For our parachutes, we made a circle and attached a small figure to it. We had great fun!!” (Olivia, Y6) “I like Penny Acres because everybody is nice to me, the teacher’s help me if I am stuck on something and they also help us learn new things that we didn’t know before. When I first started school I was really nervous and wouldn’t put my hand up if I knew something. I also wouldn’t speak in Christmas plays but now I am way more confident because I understand that the school is my family – I love school!” (Alice, Year 5) “We have been learning about the Mayans – about how they lived and their gods. We drew our own gods and labelled them. Earlier in the term, we went to Cadbury World where we learnt all about chocolate. Our class book at the moment is ‘the dragon with a chocolate heart’ and our English novel is ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’.” (Edward, Y3) “On Wednesday, I have guitar lessons. Recently, I have learnt to play ‘Shotgun’ and ‘Three little birds’. I really like my guitar lessons and look forward to them every week.“ (Elizabeth, Y4). Dave Ratcliffe – Executive Headteacher Federation of Penny Acres and Wigley Primary Schools

OCTOBER 2019 WEATHER I wrote in August that the summer had been very wet and in September I again wrote about how wet it had been. Well October continued the trend with 153mm falling – double our normal rainfall. I hesitate to say anything much more about how wet it has been. We have already had 20% more than our expected total for the year. October was also considerably colder (by 1.5°C) than normal. The only positive thing I can say about this month’s weather is that the sunshine was almost exactly what is expected for October. However, we are in the middle of Autumn – the time that John Keats described as “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun”. We did have a few days of still calm weather and some misty mornings. There were no strong gales this October and as a result the trees are still looking colourful as I write this note in early November. Our autumn trees are not as stunningly bright as those of New England in the USA or the Algonquin Park of south-eastern Canada, but nonetheless, our autumn trees are of varied hues and very attractive. I noticed how beautiful the trees looked immediately following the two extremely wet days of the 25/26th October when the air was clean and the low sun picked out some brilliant contrasts. I read that the word Autumn has been used by us for about 400 years and has a Latin root. Before then the word ‘Fall’ was in common use. I had always assumed that the word was first used in North America but it seems that the early immigrants to America took the term with them and have continued to use the word Fall rather than Autumn. It is interesting that the way we spoke centuries ago is still continued in other parts of the world, whilst our own use of language has changed. My family lived in India about 40 years ago and we noticed that many of the phrases used, such as ‘What is your good name?’ sounded rather quaint but were probably the way we spoke perhaps 200 years ago. So in summary, October was very wet, rather cold but not too windy. If it is any comfort, we were in North Devon for the second week of the month and it was just as wet down there and also rather windy. Brian Brown

SCAMMERS People across the county have reported that they have been targeted by telephone scammers who claim that £600 has been taken from the victim’s bank account. The scammers then tell the victim to ring a number or press 1 to stop this happening. If you receive one of these calls hang up immediately and ensure you do not pass any details during the phone call. Contact your bank directly, using the customer service number on the back of your bank card to report the call. If possible use a different phone than the one you received the call on. If that is not possible ensure that you hear the dial tone before you make any outgoing calls. Once you have contacted your bank please use one of the following methods to contact Derbyshire police: Facebook – send us a private message to /DerbyshireConstabulary Twitter – direct message our contact centre on @DerPolContact Website – complete the online contact form www.derbyshire.police.uk Phone – call us on 101. Police officers are asking people to make friends, family and colleagues know about the calls and ensure they are aware of safety advice. Whenever you are asked to use debit instead of credit for whatever reason and it seems suspicious, first fully enter in the wrong PIN. If it is a counterfeit machine it will pseudo process the payment and produce a receipt. An authentic machine will reject the PIN and request a “try again” of some sort.

REPORTING HATE CRIMES Crimes committed against someone because of their disability, transgender-identity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation are hate crimes and should be reported straightaway. Hate crimes can include threatening behaviour, assault, robbery, damage to property, harassment, and inciting others to commit hate crimes. There are many ways in which a victim can report an incident which includes face-to-face, over the phone or online. This could be to your local police force, or anonymously through a service like Stop Hate UK www.stophateuk.org What is important is that you report it and never suffer in silence, although you can speak to services without reporting the crime to the police. 29

KEEP YOUR VANS SECURE

The police are reminding van owners to make sure their vehicles, valuables and tools are secure after recent thefts in Dronfield, Renishaw and Holymoorside. The most recent incidents happened on Monday 4 November, with a drill and a wallet stolen from a van parked at Renishaw Park Golf Club between 10.30am and 2pm, and a drill, angle grinder, saw and batteries stolen from a van parked on Bage Hill, Holymoorside between 9am and 10am. A lawnmower and tools were also believed to have been taken from a van parked on Snape Hill Crescent at Dronfield sometime overnight between Thursday 31 October and Friday 1 November. Police officers are carrying out inquiries and would like to hear from anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious. Inspector Rob Bowns, who is in charge of policing in the North East Derbyshire area, said: “This type of crime can have a big impact on their victims, who have to replace their tools and equipment and may not be able to work in the meantime. Van owners can help reduce the risk of being targeted by making sure that vans are locked whenever they’re left unattended, that tools and valuables are removed and that it is parked in a well-lit and secure area overnight, covered by CCTV if possible. We would also urge people to resist the temptation to buy tools or equipment cheap, through online second hand sales or auction sites, car boots, or ‘off the back of a lorry,’ as criminals can be profiting by selling on stolen goods.” You can also help protect your property through security marking and registering valuables at www.immobilise.com. This can act as a deterrent because it makes it more difficult for items to be sold on and therefore less attractive to steal. If you have any information about thefts from vans or would like to speak to one of our Safer Neighbourhood teams, make contact with us using any of the following non-emergency contact methods: Facebook – send us a private message to /DerbyshireConstabulary Twitter – direct message our contact centre on @DerPolContact Website – complete the online contact form www.derbyshire.police.uk Phone – call us on 101. You can also anonymously contact Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111 or by visiting www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

PREPARING FOR WINTER

Derbyshire County Council’s 35 gritting lorries – which can all be fitted with ploughs – are now stationed at its 5 highways depots ready to take to the roads if bad weather hits. Around 25,000 tonnes of grit is also stockpiled. Parish and town councils have been filling their 1,250 grit bins for local residents to spread salt on pavements and salt in their local communities. We also provide 803 grit bins. Councillor Simon Spencer, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said, “When the weather is still reasonable it’s hard to think about preparing for winter but the weather can quickly change. We have to plan well in advance to make sure we’re not caught off guard. We grit major A roads, heavily used B roads, key bus routes, roads linking towns and larger villages and roads outside bus, train, police, fire and ambulance stations. These are gritted during the day and night, when necessary, and are pre-gritted before bad weather hits. These roads are termed ‘primary’ gritting routes. Other roads that are gritted include bus routes in residential areas and well-used main roads through housing estates and villages and roads to smaller villages. These roads are ‘secondary’ gritting routes and are generally only treated in the day because they tend to be residential roads carrying much less traffic. When possible, secondary routes are treated before adverse weather hits, but they are less of a priority than roads on primary routes. Some other roads, generally in rural areas, may also be cleared by farmers if it snows and other contractors with ploughing equipment. Volunteers recruited through town and parish councils also clear snow and ice from pavements in their local communities as part of our snow warden scheme. When the weather is exceptionally bad gritters concentrate on keeping just some of the major routes open. These are known as ‘principle’ routes. We’re now on standby for when bad weather hits with all our equipment, grit stocks, staff and volunteers at the ready so we can quickly step into action if needed.” Motorists are also advised to be prepared for winter driving as the likelihood of colder weather is now around the corner. Our safe driving advice includes: • checking the latest weather and travel information • making sure windscreens are properly defrosted, mirrors and lights are clear of snow and ice, wipers are working properly and the radiator has the correct amount of water and anti-freeze • checking the battery is in good condition and fully charged and there’s more than enough fuel for the journey • making sure tyre pressure is correct and consider fitting winter tyres for greater grip • carrying a shovel, ice scraper, torch, wellington boots, warm clothes and, for longer journeys, packing food and a hot drink Motorists are also urged to park responsibly during snow and ice keeping the roads clear for gritting and emergency vehicles to pass. Additionally, residents are encouraged to be on the lookout for vulnerable neighbours. 37
