Deposit not expended will be returned to the hirer after the function. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Any of the activities of music, dancing and (particularly) the sale of alcohol are ‘licensable activities’ and may need a Temporary Event Notice which must be obtained before the function. Hirers who may be affected by this law must contact North East Derbyshire District Council (Licensing) for advice well in advance of the function for which the hall is to be booked. The notice, if required, must be shown to the lettings officer at least ten days before the function and displayed in the hall during the function.

PLANNING MATTERS Parish Council Comment on Applications (cont.) 19/976/LDC : Mr. & Mrs. Sturchfield – Castle Hill Barn, Main Road, Holmesfield – Application for a Lawful Development Certificate for proposed siting of a chalet / mobile home for ancillary residential use (affecting setting of a Listed Building) (Conservation Area). COMMENT The term mobile home is considered misleading for a structure that is 11.24 metres by 5.28 metres. Because of the size and scale of the proposal, in the Conservation Area it is not considered appropriate for lawful development and it is asked that a full planning application be requested. There are concerns about the amount of garden that would be taken up and potential increase in traffic to the site. It is also requested that the when the decision is taken, that application 12/00486/FL for the construction of an oak framed glazed extension at the property is taken into account. This application was refused “as it would not respect the simple historic form or layout of the original agricultural building and would result in a discordant element to the principal elevation. To grant permission would have a harmful impact on the special architectural and historic interest of the Listed Building and would therefore by contrary to Policy BE7 of the North East Derbyshire Local Plan. Insufficient justification exists to allow the harm identified as a result of the proposed alteration, in terms of wider public benefits, contrary to the requirements of paragraph 134 of the National Planning Policy Framework 2012. The site is within the Holmesfield Conservation Area where Local Plan Policies require new development to preserve the prevailing traditional built features with regard to the scale, form, siting, choice of materials and details. The proposal seeks to extend an existing building in a manner to which that bears no resemblance to the original plan form or setting of the agricultural group of buildings to which this building relates. The proposal will result in an extension that has a poor relationship with the existing buildings and as a result it will neither preserve nor enhance the character and appearance of the Conservation Area contrary to the requirements of Policy BE11 of the North East Derbyshire Local Plan” District Council Decisions None

POLICE REPORT The Police report for August 2019 includes ten incidents including another theft at New Road, two vehicle crimes on Cowley Lane, incidents of anti-social behaviour and violence on Park Rise, anti-social behaviour on Vicarage Close, criminal damage on Park Avenue and Three burglaries on Fanshawe Gate Lane. Also reported that within September an Amazon Van was hijacked in the Village and recovered minus parcels on Dobbin Hill.
REPORTING CRIME Derbyshire Constabulary have a new system to help report crimes, road traffic accidents, fraud, anti-social behaviour and lost and stolen vehicles. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION Members of the Association who were not able to attend the last meeting missed an excellent talk given by Jennie Street about the charity called Rhubarb Farm which she set up a few years ago for vulnerable people to help them get back into society and make them feel they were wanted. The project started at Langwith, near Shirebrook with just a large field which needed attention clearing weeds and rubble to make it possible to grow vegetables to sell to the general public. The Welbeck Estate is one of its big supporters, the Duke and Duchess of Portland have a farm shop where the produce is sold. The local farmers are involved and corporate teams help out too. In July 2020 they are having another stand at the Chatsworth RHS Show – please support this excellent charity. The next meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 6th November and is our annual Pie & Pea Supper in Holmesfield Village Hall. Jessie Smythe is still selling tickets which cost £11 per person and includes dessert and entertainment - Tel: 0114 2890432. Please supply your own drinks and glasses. We would be very pleased if you could donate a prize to the raffle. Our meeting on Wednesday 8th January at 7.30pm in Holmesfield Village Hall. MOBILE LIBRARY Derbyshire library service has two mobile libraries - one based at Long Eaton and one based at Buxton - serving around 150 communities across the county offering a range of services for everyone including fiction and non-fiction books for adults and children, large print books, books on tape and books on CD as well as a selection of local studies books and information. PROPOSED CHANGES TO NUMBER 43 BUS ROUTE Parishoners that catch the No. 43 bus from Dronfield Woodhouse to Chesterfield are informed that a slightly revised timetable was introduced on 27th October. However, a proposal to re-route the service from 26th January 2020 has been mooted by operators, Stagecoach Yorkshire. “This service will be rerouted to serve Newbold, running via Newbold Road, Littlemoor and St John’s Road, creating new links to Whitttington Moor and onwards without the need to travel via Chesterfield town centre. Buses will run twice an hour during Monday to Saturday daytimes over the full route with an extra bus per hour between Dronfield and Sheffield on Mondays to Fridays.” These proposals are only at the consultation stage but already concerns have been raised by passengers who will no longer be able to travel direct to Chesterfield town centre. 19

HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP CARTLEDGE – BARLOW WALK On Wednesday 13th November Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from Cartledge (Holmesfield). We will however first meet at Hackney House cafe in Barlow at 10.00am where we will order our lunch (optional), we will then go a few yards along the road and catch the bus at 10,20am up to Cartledge (please bring bus passes). We then walk via Cowley back to Barlow stopping at the fish pond cafe for coffee. The walk is approx. 4½ miles long and mainly down hill. A shortcut is available. The cost of the walk is £3 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. If you would like to come just turn up on the day. RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. Our third Holmesfield Local Market was fantastically supported and a great success! A record 29 Stallholders filled the Church Hall, Angel Inn, Millenium gardens and the front of the Angel. A busy day for the volunteers and the stallholders alike, and all under blue skies and sunshine! A great buzz and a great day. In addition to our regular stall holders (great to see you again) we were delighted to welcome newcomers – Marge & Mable’s Dog Food, Waynes Woodcraft, Daltons Laurels and Hogg Norton. Of course we couldn’t run the market without the support of our fantastic regular volunteers – Adam Kilner, Steve Heald, Scott Farrell and Charlotte Keeble. Special thanks goes to Helen for her volunteering on the veg stand and also Dave our local milkman who delivered our leaflets on his milk round. We are delighted to welcome five new members to our team – Kay and Richard Burley, Kate and Andy Timms, and our youngest volunteer Ciara Kenny who supported Kirste running the bread stall. Thank you all! £214 was raised through the Market Raffle. Thank you very much if you bought a ticket and congratulations to our winner Louise Benson! All monies will be donated to the British Legion in exchange for large Poppies, which will be put up on the village lamp posts to mark Remembrance Day. The prize was a hamper full of delicious artisan products, kindly donated by our local Central England Co-op (Dronfield). We also had a runners up prize kindly donated by Dalton Laurels. The news continues to spread… Facebook reach registering over 12,300 people. Thanks to Mandy for keeping an eye on our social media updates. Our next market is planned for 7th December and will be bigger and better. SEPTEMBER 2019 WEATHER I think that we are often optimistic about September weather. We hope that we will have an ‘Indian Summer’ – a spell of warm, quiet, hazy weather. The term comes from North America so the ‘Indian’ does not refer to those who live in the Indian sub-continent. I used to think that we were the first to use the expression but it seems that, like many things, we imported it from the USA. It seems that other countries have their own expressions for a late summer period of pleasant weather. These include the use of ‘an old woman’s summer’ in several east European countries and as ‘little autumn of the geese’ in Gaelic Ireland. However, none of this is particularly relevant to September this year as that only offered three days when the temperature reached the 20s and no significant period of calm. The best word to describe September this year is as ‘wet’. The total rainfall into my rain gauge was 141mm, which is almost two and a half times what we expect to fall in September. Of the 141mm total, 43mm fell in just one day, the 29th. This was one of the wettest days that I have recorded and it rapidly filled East Hollow on Main Road between the Rutland Arms and Dronfield Woodhouse. However, September last year was also very wet and 80mm of rain fell on 20th September 2018. We have had several wet months this year and the total for the first nine months of 2019 is already very close to what we normally expect for the whole year. I think that our optimism for September weather may be misplaced. However, perhaps October, November and December will be very dry. There is still time for an ‘Indian Summer’ in October. I wonder if Americans now use the phrase ‘Native American Summer’? In addition to being wetter than normal September was also slightly colder. The mean temperature was 13.0°C as opposed to a norm of 13.3°C. We are in the spider mating season and the colder weather can drive them to find their way inside our houses. I was brought up in North Devon and I think that the spiders were bigger there than here in Derbyshire. I don’t know why. Brian Brown

DRONFIELD LIBRARY Dronfield library users now need to renew books online or in person rather than ring Call Derbyshire. Most of library customers already do this but some people ring Call Derbyshire. These library-users are being asked to think about which alternative they will use as this service ceased on 1 November 2019. Borrowers who use or have access to a computer, laptop or smartphone can renew books online by logging on to their library account (every member has one) and following some easy steps. Anyone who needs help to do this can drop into a local library where staff will be happy to guide them through the steps. As well as renewing books, people can also browse the whole catalogue to request and reserve items. Once online a whole new world of information and materials are available at the click of a button, such as eBooks, eMagazines, eAudiobooks and newspapers online.
HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. FRIENDS OF GILLFIELD WOOD On Saturday 2nd November will be our fourth and final Bird Walk of 2019 with Chris Measures. Meet at 9:00am at the bottom of Totley Hall Lane to look for resident birds as well as winter visitors such as Fieldfare and Redwing. No experience necessary, all welcome to come and learn more about our local birds. Bring binoculars and cameras if you have them. Wear strong shoes and warm clothes. HOME SECURITY OVER THE WINTER MONTHS As the darker autumn nights approach, we would like to remind residents to think about home security during the late afternoon and evenings. By taking some simple steps you can reduce the chance of your home being a potential target to criminals, so we urge residents to keep windows and doors locked and secure at all times, whether they are in or out of the home. Other advice and tips include: • Make use of good outdoor security lighting to put off a burglar. • Make your home look occupied when you are out- avoid leaving curtains closed during the day and use automatic timer switches to turn lights on when it gets dark. • Consider fitting a burglar alarm - make sure it is installed properly by a reputable firm and is working. Also remember to set it before you leave home. • A thorny hedge along the boundary of your property may put thieves off, as may a gravel path, as it’s noisy to walk on. • Always close any gates and secure them with a lock. • Trim back any hedges or plants that a burglar could hide behind. Sharing their own personal travel tales and intimate knowledge of these cultures with an exciting mix of instruments from the accordion and violin to the tabor pipe and double bass, taking the audience on a journey from melancholy Roma violin laments to storming ‘kolos’ and explorations into jazz improvisation, swing, Gypsy Rumba and Turkish and Indian influenced songs. Faith and Branko first met in Branko’s Serbian village, with music as their only tool for communication they began a journey that would lead to the creation of their award-winning album ‘Gypsy Lover’, their marriage and their successful international touring. Branko taught himself the violin, which became a way out of the extreme health, social and economic problems through which he lived in Serbia. 39

Hear about the origins, the buildings contained therein and the many commercial uses of the Deer Park plus a survey of the thousands of Deer that roamed the Park and its surrounds. David looks at its magnificent oak trees and the walnut avenues originating from the Castle.
