HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION The Association had another interesting outing for their evening visit. This time to Park Hall, a 17th century house in Chesterfield. The owners, Kim & Margaret Staniforth, have resurrected the garden which was overgrown and needed some TLC. The roses were in bloom together with other flowers and bushes. The next meeting is another evening visit on Wednesday 7th August to Gill Bagshawe’s Cutting Flower Garden, Hawkhill Road ,Eyam. S32 5QQ. Meeting at 6.30pm, the cost is £5 plus £3 for refreshments. JUNE 2019 WEATHER I remarked last month that June was usually one of the drier months. Well this year it certainly was not dry. We had 163mm of rain, whereas my average for June is less than half this amount. More than an inch of rain fell on each of three separate days, and indeed there was some rain on 22 days of the month. Nonetheless, 163mm is not a lot of rain in comparison with some other parts of the World. We received a message this week from our friend Kapil, who lives in Mumbai, and he said that they had received 375mm in the previous 24 hours. That is more than usual for Mumbai but actually the record rainfall for Mumbai was in July 2005 when 944mm fell in 24 hours. The SW monsoon in India is caused by the wet winds from the Indian Ocean being pulled in, to fill the low pressure caused by the intense heat in May and early June over the Thar Desert and the area of central India. It was 46°C when we went to a wedding in Delhi last year and the temperatures this year were slightly higher so enhancing the monsoon. Holmesfield had an average temperature of 13°C in June, which is almost one degree below the average for the month. The hottest day recorded by my weather station was 28.6°C on the 29th of June. The weeds and the grass have grown quite well. Our main problem in the garden was the heavy rain washing small plants out of the soil. June contained the summer solstice on the 21st, when the tilt of the North Pole towards the sun was at its maximum. Depending upon the shifts in our calendar with leap years, the summer solstice can occur on the 20th, 21st or 22nd of June. It will be the 20th June next year. The summer solstice is the day with the longest period of daylight. The number of hours of daylight depends upon your latitude but in Holmesfield, at latitude 53.3°N, we had exactly 17 hours of daylight on the 21st June. Even now, as I write this note on the 7th July, the sun is shining and we Brian Brown will have 16¾ hours of daylight to enjoy.

FUNERALS IN THE PARISH The funeral of Wendy Anne White (82) of Knowles Farm, Fox Lane took place in St. Swithin’s Church on the 11th of July. The funeral of Barry Wood (80) of Gooseberry Farm, The Common, Holmesfield took place in St. Swithin’s Church on the 24th of July.

MILLTHORPE SEATING AREA The Parish Council thanks Robert Barnes for refurbishing the seating at the bottom of Millthorpe Lane. The job was done at short notice and to a very high standard - thank-you, Bob! 27

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB JUNIOR SECTION

The end of this year’s cricket season has seen a variety of weather from roasting hot days to torrential rain stopping play! A sunny evening in early July saw Holmesfield host the U10 friendly league, welcoming Hathersage and Sheffield Transport to our ground. Some great games of cricket were played and a wonderful display of skills from all teams. Huge congratulations go to our U11 Red team on becoming champions of their U11 league. They remain unbeaten in the league and their determination, commitment and team work have been wonderful to watch week on week. The Red team also reached the semi-final of the cup losing by just 2 runs in an extremely exciting match, a great effort. Our U11 Blue team continued to enjoy success in the league finishing mid table at the end of the season. After their first season together, they are looking forward to building on their success next season. Our U13s continue to develop strongly as a team and have enjoyed some great matches in the league. Holmesfield were very honoured to be asked to host the U13 cup final and enjoyed welcoming the teams to our ground. The All Stars programme has been extremely successful and it has been wonderful to have them training at the ground on a Friday night. It is great to see so many children enjoying and playing cricket. A huge thank you to everyone that has volunteered in so many different ways over the season and thank you to all our cricketeers who have made us all very proud. Roll on next season ‌.!!

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB With Matlock’s 1st XI – who were just 1 place below Holmesfield in the table visiting Millthorpe on Saturday 29th June, a good result is vital to arrest a worrying slide in form. Winning the toss and batting first, the visitors. Mayank Sharma was the pick of the Vill’s bowling attack getting 4 wickets as Matlock were dismissed for 138. Holmesfield hit the required runs in just over 36 overs for the loss of 6 wickets with Jimmy Pearson finishing unbeaten on 69 runs. A trip to mid-table Ambergate to play their 1st XI on 6th July saw Holmesfield being put in to bat after losing the toss. A low scoring affair saw the Vill finish on 183-9 off their 46 overs. Nick Crapper rose to the challenge and bagged 5 wickets as the hosts were dismissed for 128 with 14 balls to go. Two wins on the spin made the league table much healthier reading! Struggling Holmewood’s 1st XI were next to visit Millthorpe on 13th July and an unbelievable game saw the visitors finish all out for 105 and it was Clinton Nobrega’s turn to claim a Fifer. The hosts being in a strong position must have fancied themselves for a third straight win but Holmesfield contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by virtue of a batting collapse that saw the Vill dismissed for just 81 runs with four of the team out for a duck and three more getting just 1 run each! Only Zac Dann provided any form of resistance, finishing not out on 22 runs. The Butcher Cup provided a welcome distraction from the League and Holmesfield won the trophy for the 5th year in a row. Holmesfield won the toss and batting first scored 191-5 in their 20 overs. Opening bat David Ward top scored with a man-of-the-match 67 runs and Jimmy Pearson hit 50 not out. Holmesfield then bowled Coal Aston out for 99 in 16.1 overs. It was a brilliant team performance. Buoyed by the Cup victory, Holmesfield travelled to Marehay near Ripley on 20th July to play their 2nd XI. Thomas Outram hit a fine century and finished 100 not out and was ably supported by opener Mayank Sharma who chipped in with a useful 66. Finishing on a healthy 211-3 off 34 overs in a weather shortened game, it was sadly not to be as the hosts scored 213-5 to earn the win. The home fixture against Darley Dale on 27th July was sadly a washout. Once again Gary Fantom and Lucy, from the Rutland Arms at Cowley Bar have kindly sponsored 5 balls for the home games which will be played in July and August. This is a very generous thought, which helps The Club a great deal. First XI Home Fixtures at Millthorpe: Derbyshire League Division 3 North (1pm start): 3rd August: Breadsall 1st XI, 24th August: Chesterfield 2nd XI, 7th September: Ashover 1st XI. Please come and support us on match days in 2019! #UpTheVill 33

PUBLIC SPACE PROTECTION ORDERS North East Derbyshire District Council are looking for areas in the Parish that would benefit from Public Space Protection Orders which aim to improve the enjoyment of public spaces for the majority of people and reduce anti-social behaviour caused by dog fouling and nuisance dogs. It is proposed that a PSPO would address issues such as the number of dogs on leads at any one time, the need for dogs to be on leads in restricted areas, creating dog exclusion zones e.g. children’s play areas and the need to clean up after your dog. So far the following sites have been recommended for inclusion:

• The Cricket Pitch at Millthorpe • The Football Pitch on Cowley Lane • The Millennium Garden at Holmesfield • Holmesfield Park and Play Area • The top part of Park Avenue. Please let us know of any other areas that you believe would benefit from a PSPO.
