Better Speech and Hearing Month! Spring has sprung, and with it comes Better Speech and Hearing Month in May. Speech, language, and hearing disorders make up a large portion of students receiving special education services, particularly in early elementary years. Nearly 8% of preschool aged children, and 5% of elementary aged children are received speech or language services from a speech language pathologist. Speech, language, and hearing can impact a student’s social and academic life. Language has implications for student reading ability, as well as academic achievement in the content areas. Elements of language, including vocabulary and background knowledge, are particularly helpful for reading. If students with speech, language, or hearing delays do not receive appropriate intervention they can quickly fall behind their peers. Early identification and intervention are essential for helping students with their speech and language needs. Early elementary students are screened for hearing loss, but parents and teachers need to keep their eyes open for any differences they notice in their child’s speech or language. Once a student has been identified, the earlier they begin participating in speech and language therapy the better! Many students will work with a schoolbased speech language pathologist, but there are language activities you can do at home with your child as well! Parents can participate in guided reading with their children, this activity is fun for both parents and kids. Parents should choose 2

a fun book with their student, be sure to identify some key vocabulary words or language elements you want to work on before reading. As you read be sure to point out new vocabulary words to your child, give meaning to the word, and continue to use the word in context. Once you finish reading it is important to continue using the chosen vocabulary words in context. For example, if you decided to focus on the vocabulary word ‘strawberry,’ you might eat strawberries with lunch that day, or get strawberry ice cream while being sure to talk about strawberries and the flavor strawberry. Another fun way to incorporate language into your daily life can be through guided play. In this activity all you have to do is play with your child, be sure to use lots of types of language and vocabulary words in context. If your child isn’t interested in talking to you, you can always narrate what you’re doing in a fun way. Of course it is important to keep an eye on your child’s hearing as well. Many young children suffer from ear infections and even this temporary hearing loss can impact their speech and language. If you have concerns about your child’s hearing don’t wait for screening information to come home from school, visit an audiologist for a hearing test as soon as possible. A saying goes, what goes in, must come out, and the same is true for listening and language. Children must have access to language in order to grow socially and academically.

How Far Do You Go? The internet is a curse and a blessing. It is exposing your children to a world that affords them so much opportunity for growth and education. It can also be a place where kids can see pornography and digital images that are not intended for young brains. Kids are sharing graphic images that make the brain want more. If you stay alert, you will know when you need to supersede and check behind the scenes to make sure they are staying on the right track. I am a big believer in giving your child the independence they need to make good decisions and yet I know that it is imperative to pay attention to your gut and go to any means possible to ensure their safety. I am the type of counselor who advocates that a client check-in with the parent of a child who is hosting a sleepover or party to inquire about supervision, rules and expectations regardless of the concern of your child that you are being overprotective or smothering. Now that the world is digitalized, it poses the need for extra scrutiny. I tell parents that if your child has a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter account, it can only be approved if you always have full accessibility to it including your child's passwords. I believe this is a better choice than parents who would like to use surveillance software to monitor their child's peer communications or interests. That way if the parent sees something concerning, they can address it and use it as a teachable moment for their child. The dilemma gets tougher when your teenager decides to opt for more control and opens multiple accounts and you figure out that he or she has outsmarted you (temporarily) because they are so much savvier than you. If you have

reason to believe that your child has tried to exert this extra independence from you it is absolutely OK for you to use a software system that tracks keystrokes or applications and pictures. I do advise that it is important to Carol Juergensen Sheets "have the talk" prior to any problems" that you will give your child his independence but if you become suspect you will go to any means to make sure they are safe. In other words, you explain to your child as you discuss internet that you hope you will NEVER HAVE TO MONITOR ACTIVITY THIS WAY BUT IF YOU NEED TO YOU WILL AND THAT YOU WANTED HIM/HER KNOW THAT YOU WILL ONLY DO THIS IF YOU BECOME SUSPECT OF A PROBLEM. Kids need to know that you are not going to match their deceit by deceiving them too. Besides that, you need to be able to talk to them about your concerns which requires that you share that you have monitored them because you have been suspicious of their actions. Regardless of your child's age, as a parent you are always looking for teachable moments although the older, they get .... the angrier they will be about your need to monitor and control their actions. They will likely make you feel very guilty about your actions and they will understandably be incensed that you have violated their freedom. That is why I always advise parents to wait until they have solid reasons to use extraordinary measures to monitor their child's actions. It is tough being a parent especially when you must go to extraordinary means to keep your child safe, but the truth of the matter is that is your number 1 job!

Healing through Arts and Education Throughout COVID-19, Ascension St. Vincent has adapted and enhanced existing programs and services to ensure that patients and healthcare heroes are cared for in mind, body, and spirit. Here are highlights of the good work being completed by two programs thanks to donor support of the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation. The Healing Arts Program at Ascension St. Vincent is dedicated to promoting holistic healing through a combination of visual art, music and dance/movement interventions. The program has expanded its normal efforts to support healing throughout COVID-19. • Positivity Boards were introduced around the hospital to bring color, encouraging messages, and uplifting information to patient units. • A fun “Sneeze, Blow, and Throw” song was created to teach hospitalized children the ways to keep themselves and other people safe when they sneeze or cough. • Legacy Prints have been made to help comfort families who lost a loved one to COVID-19, including a digital thumbprint to be shared with family members as a lasting memory. In addition to helping patients, the Healing Arts Program also supports Ascension St. Vincent associates through activities that provide encouragement and stress relief. Along with spiritual care teams, the Healing Arts Program introduced a new “Code Lavender” protocol to provide focused support for associates when they have been involved in a stressful event at the hospital. Carts have been placed in units and include items such as art materials, aromatherapy, scripture, meditation guides, deep breathing exercises, and resources for virtual support. Another crucial program funded by the 14

supporters of the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation is the School Program at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. This program addresses the educational needs of many patients who are missing time from school as a result of their hospitalization through an on-site school program. The comprehensive assistance provided by the school program helps provide a sense of stability to patients as they battle their respective health issues. The ultimate goal is for all patients who require educational instruction or assistance during their hospitalization to successfully re-acclimate to their home schools with minimal difficulty. When COVID-19 shut down schools in the spring, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital’s licensed teacher, Heather Wiselogle, began to teach remotely, using tools like Zoom and Skype. She developed creative ways to engage students and continued seeing as many students online as she was seeing in person. Through the Paws to Read program, students were able to read their favorite books to therapy dogs virtually. Heather also helped some high school seniors as they were dealing with the challenges of both online learning and their own health conditions during their final semester. She wrote letters of recommendation for scholarships and assisted with requests for accommodations for college. Funding of programs like Healing Arts and the School Program is crucial in supporting the needs of our patients and healthcare heroes. To learn more about Healing Arts, the School Program, and additional programs funded by the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation, visit give.stvincent.org or call 317-338-2338.
