On Wednesday, Year 10 student Amman Ahmed visited the Bullring in Birmingham to take part in a film shoot for the launch of Shout Down Hate. Here’s what Amman told us: “I was very fortunate to be selected to take part in a film shoot for the launch of Shout Down Hate. The campaign comes after an increase in hate crime, sadly with hundreds of incidents not being reported. Hate Speech is the seed which leads to Hate Crime. The campaign aims to get all young people talking about their hate experience. It was an amazing experience and I was surprised at how many people it takes to make a one minute video. After four hours of shooting, I was exhausted!”

Our new Breakfast Club for Year 11 students is already proving a great success. Many students are turning up bright and early to take advantage of facilities to help them revise and, of course, a free breakfast! If you haven’t already tried it, come along on Monday. All Year 11 students are welcome!

Mr Biddlecombe, PE Teacher: On Wednesday eleven Year 9 and 10 students travelled to Dudley Kingswinford RFC to take part in the Dudley Schools Rugby Festival. The other schools competing were Summerhill, High Arcal and Haybridge. Though we drew one game and lost two, the lads should be really proud of their efforts. Many of them had played rugby for just a short period of time. For their team spirit they were given the 'Most Sporting Team' award.

The team was: Arshaq Aziz, Alex Billingsley, Iwan Edmonds, Tyler Green, Jack Griffiths, Spencer Guy, Reece Jones, Jordan Kondo, Morgan Martin, Anthony Owen and Jamie Shanks.

Important examinations are taking place next week. Please ensure that you arrive at the Academy on time and prepared with all equipment required. All exams are for Year 11 students unless otherwise stated. Monday History Geography Child Development Chemistry

Mr Townley, Interim Assistant Principal: Last Wednesday we had our fourth Enrichment Day of the year with a range of activities taking place both on and off site. Year 7 had a day playing maths games designed to stretch their minds, reasoning power and problem solving ability and also to have some good old fun! Year 8 went on a geography field trip to Hawkstone Park Follies in Shropshire. The Follies is historic woodland fantasy with cliffs, crags, caves, deep woods and a series of extraordinary monuments built over 200 years ago. After years of neglect the magical landscape was lovingly restored and reopened in 1993. Students enjoyed exploring the magical landscape seeing a range of unique geological features. Abigail Berry: “Our tour guide gave instructions. We walked up a hill which was exhausting. We also saw a cave, it was very dark. We even built a den for fun! It was a tiring day but we had an amazing experience outdoors.” David Griffin: “The trip was interesting and exciting. We walked miles and had the chance to go up a tower. The view from the top was amazing!” Year 9 had a taster day at Dudley College, moving around a carousel of 4 different subject areas. The idea behind this was to find out not only what post 16 courses students may like to do, but importantly what they don't like to do, ensuring the correct decisions are made for their journey onward from Holly Hall. Ashley Colley: “The trip was amazing. I spent time doing nail design in Hair & Beauty.” Emma-Jane Corbett: “This was a good day. I tried out different subjects and it has made me think of what I want to do when I leave Holly Hall.” Tyrone Matole: “I enjoyed the day. Particularly the barbering.” Qaasim Naghman: “My favourite activity was virtual reality welding. I really enjoyed the visit.” Year 10 were ‘Learning about Ourselves’ with talks from Brook Advisory Service. They also began to think about preparation for the world of work. Year 11 took part in a walk and talk mock; this is a new strategy we are trying as a result of the Ofsted action plan to raise standards and give every student the best chances of success in the forthcoming examinations in the summer. Recently, students learning about the Holocaust were invited to send a postcard to Holocaust Survivors. Year 10 student Amman Ahmed sent one and this week he received a thank you postcard back from Renie Inow. Renie escaped the Holocaust on the Kindertransport (Children's Transport). This was the informal name of a series of rescue efforts which brought thousands of refugee Jewish children to Great Britain from Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1940. She wrote that she was pleased that Amman had been learning about her life.
