Miss McKee, Teacher of Performing Arts: On Thursday 19th April I took a group of dance students to High Arcal school to participate in a dance workshop by Twist and Pulse, a comedy street dance act who came 2nd in Britain’s Got Talent in 2010. The students worked really hard and loved being taught by professional dancers. They even managed to have some photographs with the boys too! Well done dancers! The participants were: Evelina Arnasiute, Lucy Black, Scarlett Callaghan, Katie Cartwright, Hasti Davoudi, Honie Fleming, Katie Hadley, Nikita-Jorja Johnson, Lucy Landucci, Ellie Mcaree, Courtney Mallen, Ellie Round and Sam Shorthouse.

Mrs Milovsorov; Leader of Lifestyles: Recently Paula Shortland from West Midlands Police visited Holly Hall to speak to students in Years 7 - 10 about travelling on public transport in our region. Paula told the students how they could stay safe. We were impressed to know that the new buses in the region have up to fifteen CCTV cameras on them and even record sound. This is a great reassurance to our young people that they are going to remain safe while using public transport. Paula told the students that the Safer Travel team are very much intelligence led, meaning that they respond to complaints from the public and from footage they obtain via CCTV. The students are all now aware of how to make complaints or report any issues. Due to this intelligence led system of working, Paula was pleased to announce that Holly Hall students do not find themselves getting caught up in issues on the Travel West Midlands network, which is great news. Paula also reinforced the expectations for travel to prevent complaints about anti-social behaviour.

Last week we held our first Saturday School for Year 11 students to gain additional help with their Maths and English. Over fifty students attended. The classes will run every Saturday from 9.00am until 12.00pm until the examinations start. All Year 11 students are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Good new folks! You will be pleased to know that there are still places available on the ski trip to Tirol, Southern Italy 2019. This is an amazing opportunity to learn how to ski and experience the sights and sounds that Italy has to offer. If you are interested in the opportunity of a life time during February half term 2019, please see Miss Smith in T6 or Mr Townley for further information.

An article by Year 10 student Charlie Williams: On Tuesday a group of students went to Wolverhampton Racecourse to attend a speed careers networking event. We had five minute one-to-one sessions with successful business people. The whole thing was quite like speed dating but with professionals. We had to ask them questions about how they got to where they are today and ask what advice they would give to people doing their GCSEs and planning for their future. A common tip they gave was to do something you are interested in. They suggested finding your strengths and find a career in which you can use them. Here is what some of the students said about the day: Katie Ansell: “It was a very informative day and I really enjoyed it.” Navina Kaur Tagger: “It was a great experience because we got to learn more about what will come up in the future.” Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the day and hope to be part of more events like this in the future.

Mrs Milovsorov, Leader of Lifestyles: You may remember that in February we told you that Year 8 & 10 would be taking part in a National Health Survey. We now have the results and will be sharing the key points with you over the coming weeks.

food approved' drinks including fruit drinks and milkshakes at break and lunch time. There are a number of issues around drinking fizzy and energy drinks that are well publicised, including the sugar content and its link with obesity and tooth decay, as well as the negative effect on concentration.

An issue that keeps cropping up as a problem is Energy Drinks! We have featured this a number of times and you also may have seen that many supermarkets are now enforcing age restrictions to these products. So a gentle reminder that students should not be bringing energy (including still and sugar free) drinks or fizzy drinks into the Academy. We actively encourage the drinking of water throughout the day and sell a variety of 'school

Despite this, according to our survey, 36% of our Year 8 and 10 pupils are drinking energy drinks or fizzy drinks on most days. Water is available from drinking fountains both in Scotty G's and in the toilets and is the only drink that students are permitted to drink in lessons. We are pleased to announce that 83% of all students in Year 8 & 10 knew that they could drink water at anytime. For the remaining 17% - now you know!

Mr Taylor, History Teacher: Last week, thirty-four students visited France and Belgium for a tour of WWI battlefields. It was an enjoyable visit, though very emotional. Here are the places they visited. Notre-Dame-De-Lorette This is the world's largest French military cemetery. 40,057 casualties are buried here.

Somme 1916 Museum Here, we went 10 metres underground to view a tunnel dating from the 13th century. We saw accurately produced dioramas recounting the lives of soldiers in the trenches during the offensive of the 1st July 1916.

Lochnagar Crater

Newfoundland Memorial Park

The Lochnagar mine was an underground explosive charge, secretly planted by the British during the First World War, ready for 1 July 1916, the first day on the Somme.

Here we saw some remarkably w ell preserved trenches which helped us visualise a First World War battlefield. Ypres, Belgium, Flanders Fields Tyler Arrowsmith laid a wreath at the Menin Gate. This was made by students during the Poppy Appeal.

Vimy Ridge The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is a war memorial site in France dedicated to the memory of C a n a d i a n Expeditionary Force members killed during the First World War.

Ulster Tower The Ulster Tower is Northern Ireland's national war memorial. It commemorates the men of the 36th Division and all those from Ulster who served in WWI. Theipval We visited the Thiepval Memorial which bears the names of over 75,000 missing officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces. Page 3
