Mrs Turton, AIG and Careers Aspiration Advisor: Young Chamber provides a range of different ways in which Chambers of Commerce can help schools and colleges tap into the knowledge, skills and experience that local businesses can provide students for them to succeed in the world of work.

Students gain an insight into the world of work and get the chance to learn about the different careers they could have, as well as the routes that they can take to get there. They will also learn what skills both technical and soft that they need to pursue a successful career once they leave education.

Young Chamber Committee Members, Amman Ahmed, Molly Handley, Natasha Hussain and Ezha Jahangir said “In this role we are able to influence decisions in the Black Country about economic and political issues that are relevant to young people. We will be balloting and listening to students at Holly Hall and our local area. We will then select a pressing matter which we will work towards tackling with the help of our student voice in the Young Chambers Committee.

We have recently discovered via the ‘Make Your Mark’ campaign that work experience is a key issue within schools in our local community. We will be working with the Express and Star and other influential companies to achieve better opportunities for our students.”

Miss Spittle, Science Curriculum Development Coordinator: On Thursday, sixteen eager Year 10 scientists headed to Dudley College for a fun afternoon of stimulating their senses through science. Students made slime, created DNA bracelets of different organisms, demonstrated sound waves, found out if they had the PTC gene, and created methane fire bubbles. All students got involved and had a fun time using the college’s laboratories and dressing in lab coats to feel like real scientists.

Last week, three students went to Swynnerton MoD Training Camp. They all have an interest in the military and the residential gave them the opportunity to taste real army life.

A report by Year 11 students Tyler Arrowsmith, Stanley Hoult and Daniel McGregor: “The week was really tough but also enjoyable. We took part in many activities including obstacle courses, vehicle checkpoints, a drill and field craft. In dismounted close combat trainer (DCCT) we tested our accuracy skills and learnt about how effective camouflage is. We gained a real insight into army life with a focus on teamwork and discipline. We talked to some regular soldiers who gave advice about a career in the armed forces. It was a great experience.”

Miss Rawlings, Intervention Coordinator: On Monday this week, we held a Coffee Morning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Tea, coffee, juice, biscuits and cakes were served by Miss Rawlings, assisted by Student Leaders Amman Ahmed and Ezha Jahangir.

We raised £74.20. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Mrs Turton, AIG Career & Aspiration Advisor: On Tuesday we held our annual Careers Evening.

Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 along with their parents/carers, attended. Local colleges, training providers, armed forces and businesses were present to provide advice. Here’s what some of our students said about the evening:

Courtney Gallear: “There was people from Universities which was helpful. I am now better able to make a decision about my future.”

Adam Holloway: The Careers Evening was beneficial and allowed us to see the wide range of options that we have after leaving school. I now feel that I will make better, well-rounded decisions about my future.”

Eva Masawi: “I really benefitted from meeting the sixth form advisors. I learnt a lot about possible courses for when I leave Holly Hall.”

On Tuesday this week, the Year 7 football team played their first match of the season against Wordsley.

Mr Harris, PE Teacher: On Wednesday, the Year 8 football team visited Wordsley. We led 3-2 at half time but unfortunately failed to score during the second half.

The game finished 5-3 to Wordsley.

At half time, despite some fantastic saves by our keeper Arsild Leka, Wordsley were winning 4-0.

In the second half, Holly Hall improved their performance with a goal from Brooklyn Butcher.

The final score was 6-1 to Wordsley. Well done to the team who will continue to improve given the level of effort.

On Thursday this week Year 7 played Crestwood The first half ended with Crestwood being 2-0 up.

In the second half, a goal by Teejay Parke lifted the teams spirits. Unfortunately Crestwood quickly scored again. They kept on battling and Owen Dovey scored our second goal. The final score finishing 3-2 to Crestwood.

YEAR 10 Last Tuesday, the Year 10 football team played host to Crestwood.

Unfortunately our goal keeper got injured in the warm up, so Jack Griffiths volunteered to stand in.

This was their best game so far. Every player contributed to the overall performance. Though the game finished in a loss to Holly Hall, the team can hold their heads up high for a brilliant performance.
