HOSPITALITY GENESIS 18:1-8; MATTHEW 10:40-42 Henri Nouwen, the great spiritual writer, was going to a monastery for a retreat. The monks observed vows of silence and the retreat was to be meditative and prayerful. Nouwen was delayed and was late getting to the monastery on that miserable, rainy night. He rang the bell, well after bedtime, and was met at the door by one of the brothers. The brother warmly greeted him, took his wet coat, brought him to the kitchen and made him a cup of tea. They chatted in the late night hours and Nouwen began to relax and feel ready for the retreat. But he knew this monk was supposed to observe silence, so he finally asked him, "Why are you willing to sit and talk with me?" The monk replied "Of all the duties of the Christian faith and the rules of my order, none is higher than hospitality." This is a good word to those of us who live at a fast pace. Hospitality is often thought of as a quaint country tradition. It is what we expect when we visit one of North Carolina’s small towns and stay at the family- owned "Bed and Breakfast." Many of us don’t think of hospitality as a Christian duty, but here Jesus is talking about receiving guests. Many of the stories

from and about Jesus speak to the issue of hospitality. Hospitality is an important biblical theme as is evidenced also in our reading from Genesis, in which Abraham goes far beyond the required measure of hospitality when three unexpected guests arrive at his camp. Matthew’s passage also promises that we will share in the reward of those whose ministry we enable. Christ encourages us all to be ministers for His Kingdom. When we show hospitality toward each other, we enable all to do God’s will, and we become a part of the good that is accomplished through the Church. Aldersgate UMC is a wonderful gift from God, and I thank God for each of you. You have blessed me with your warmth and care. It has made me want to “go and do likewise” for others that I meet. Let us all continue to share His hospitality in our world. God Bless You, Pastor Homer

To our Aldersgate Family, Words cannot express how truly blessed John and I are to have you in our lives. Your prayers, cards, food and words of encouragement during my recent knee surgery meant so much to us. We knew we had all of you with us on this latest journey. Between John’s back surgery, your care and presence helped sustain us both physically and mentally. It is wonderful to be a part of a church that lets the light of God shine so brightly. We look forward to returning soon to join back in the loving, giving spirit at AUMC ! We give thanks and praise for how you let the light shine ! Love, Liz and John Crose

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY - TODDLERS * TWOS AND THREES FIRST CALLED CHRISTIANS BIBLE VERSE: ACTS 2:47 “THEY PRAISED GOD AND DEMONSTRATED GOD’S GOODNESS TO EVERYONE” I CAN HELP SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS!

During difficult times, some of us often feel very alone. Frequently the problem is that we have no one to talk to who will really listen. Aldersgate UMC is fortunate to have a compassionate group of Stephen Ministers who are trained to do just that—to listen with caring hearts. These persons do a great job of walking alongside those of us going through tough times including: separation, job loss, sickness, loneliness, family difficulties, etc. As one care receiver put it, “My Stephen Minister has my back.” Emily, a recent care receiver, lost her mother to a heart attack. Being the only child, Emily’s life had been wrapped up in taking care of her mother. When she died, Emily felt like she no longer has a purpose in life. At first, her grief intensified because she had no one with whom she could share her feelings. She reported that because her friends didn’t want to hear about her grief anymore, she would throw a mask up to act like everything was okay. After several months of feeling stuck in grief, Emily finally requested a Stephen Minister. Since that time, she declares that her Stephen Minister “has helped me to move forward by bringing Christ’s healing love into my life—week after week. And though it was scary at first to express my emotions, I found that the Lord comforted me when I did.” If you want to learn more about our Stephen Ministry program, or if you know of a relative, a friend, or a co-worker, who might benefit, see Jack Snyder, or call him at 919-477-0509 Ext. 303, or at: Jack@aldersgate.org.

We have provided transportation, meals, a place to sleep, fellowship and hospitality for 7 days at a time. Beginning in June IHN is moving to a new location and has a new name, Families Moving Forward. The families will have individual rooms and a space to call home. We will go to them two nights a week for a total of 8 days per year. AUMC members will minister with two other local church during these 8 days a year. Temple Baptist members will continue to work with us; also one other local church will join us. All three churches will work together on Monday nights and Temple Baptist will host Tuesday night, a new church will host on Wednesday night and AUMC will host on Thursday night. What we need for this mission to succeed is YOU to cook dinner for up to 17 people (2 casseroles, 2 salads & 2 desserts). We need 3 to 4 people to take the food to them and serve it. PRAYER BEADS FOR THE 2016 GENERAL CONFERENCE Kristen Vincent 889 Euclid Avenue NE Atlanta, GA 30307 Dear Kristen, Enclosed with this letter are twenty prayer bead strands prepared by members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. We were delighted to have the opportunity to participate in this endeavor as we feel it connects our congregation more closely to the people and events of General Conference 2016. The participants of our prayer bead workshop included Judy Alford, Barbara Atkinson, Vanessa Gordon, Kaye Harris, Joyce Mackin, Danielle Nixon, Alice Osteen, April Twine, Regina Whitaker, and myself. We also prepared strands for ourselves and will present strands to special friends and family members. Thank you for your excellent video and instructions. They made assembly very easy and enjoyable. We hope to hold another workshop to prepare full strands of prayer beads and share this with other members of our congregation. May God continue to bless you and all those involved in serving to support the General Conference attendees with spiritual strength and guidance. Sincerely, Pattie Porter

T HANK Y OU ! A big heartfelt "Thank You" to all who helped put on the Missy Prissy Tea Party. I received a lot of praise for a job well done BUT it took a village to put this on. I can't name all the names, it would take up this whole newsletter; but Judy Alford and Heidi Miller, this would not have happened without all your help, direction and expertise. I am proud to be a member of Agape Circle who backed this childhood memory for me. Thank you all of my Agape Sistas' and all of AUMC who made this possible. Joyce Mackin

CONDUIT NEWS

The End-of-the-School Year Party took place on Thursday, April 21st, a little earlier than expected. Twenty - one students enjoyed the games, hand-painted T-shirts, certificates and awards for good behavior, regular attendance, and persevering with their homework at the YMCA Learning Center at Oxford Manor. The churches of CONDUIT provided the meal of chicken nuggets, meatballs, a fruit plate, cheese and crackers, pickles, and dozens of homemade cookies. Each child was given a bag of toiletries, including a colorful wash cloth, to take home with them. The Angels Basketball Teams, run by Mt. Level Baptist Church, were honored at the Basketball Banquet sponsored by CONDUIT on April 9th at Mt. Sylvan UMC. The pizzas were a big hit with the two teams. The older team of 13 to 17 year-old boys was the team that practiced at Aldersgate this year. They won the championship in their league! What a wonderful program for the boys and one young girl from Oxford Manor. CONDUIT certainly appreciates the support that Aldersgate gives all year. Lee King has greatly enjoyed working with Judy Schlegel and Pattie Porter on the CONDUIT Board.

UPDATES The Food Drive on April 16th, sponsored by Durham Food Pantry Network for Urban Ministries Food pantry and supported by numerous volunteers from Aldersgate congregation, yielded 2495 lbs of food items and 80 lbs of Hygiene items plus an additional 600 lbs of food for The Greater Orange Baptist church food pantry. Thanks to everyone who donated, worked the collections, counted & sorted the food to make it one of the most successful food drives to date. We could not do this without all of your help & generosity! GOD IS GOOD!! We will continue to collect food by donations weekly for Urban Ministries Food Pantry. They always are in need of powdered milk, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned meats, peanut butter, pasta, rice, and etc. Collection boxes remain in the Wesley Room hallway. THANK YOU & GOD BLESS! Bill Smith

M USIC AND A RTS C AMP Date: July 11-15, 9-1pm (performance is Friday, 7/15 at 3:30 pm). Full day camp is also available. For children K-8 grades! DRAMA, MUSIC, DANCE, ARTS come together with a camp full of talented kids to present: JUDGE JULIE TRULY and the CASE OF THE HOLEY ROOF! Welcome to the courtroom of Judge Julie, where Her Honor will now hear the Case of the Holey Roof (which you might recognize as the Gospel story of the Four Friends)! Look: the courtroom doors have opened and the Bailiff is calling the court to order! Here comes our plaintiff: a grumpy homeowner accusing the Four Friends of “damaging his roof – on purpose!” Here come the defendants: “Four Famously Faithful Friends” and a Star Witness who can testify firsthand that “nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus Christ.” The testimony from the Gospel of Luke will lead to a surprising verdict! And we will all learn how our LOVE IN ACTION can lead people right to the feet of our Savior. The courtroom setting of Judge Julie helps children explore this Bible story in a fun and relevant way. This musical offers character parts large and small, solos and catchy songs, and lots of opportunity for set creation and choreography too. Join us for a wonderful week of FaithMeets-the Arts! Note: come to Arts in the Afternoon for a sneak-preview of the musical Thursdays from 4:30-5:00, through May 19th You can register for Music and Arts Camp now with Nan – just email nan@aldersgate.org with the following info: Name of camper, Age and Grade Completed, Parent’s name and contact (phone, email). ARTS IN THE AFTERNOON J oin us for a sneak-peek at our Summer Musical, “Judge Julie Truly and the Case of the Holey Roof!” Thursdays from 4:30-5:00, through May 19th SERVICES SURVEY IS UP It’s a good idea once in a while to discover what you’r e feeling about our worship practices here at Aldersgate. We want to offer worship and music that speaks in a way that most effectively helps you to speak and hear God’s word, that touches your spirit, and effectively serves as both a centering and sending influence on your life. The survey also touches on some Christian formation and staff questions. This survey is important to help us to know how to best serve our congregation. We hope you’ll prayerfully and carefully respond. CAPITOL ON THE EDGE BROUGHT THEIR INSPIRATION AND LOVE TO ALDERSGATE Who were those young men in our gym last month doing flips and dances for God? They were a part of a ministry called Capital on the Edge, a non-profit organization located in Managua, Nicaragua. This ministry takes in at-risk youths from the streets into a talent-development-program, “the Nicavangelists.” In this program, they are given food, housing, clothing, an education and the chance to develop skills in performance arts. The Nicavangelists seek to create a bright future for these incredibly gifted youths by giving them opportunities to share their talents and culture with the world. To-date, the Nicavangelists have travelled to and performed in Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala and the USA. (Follow them on their Facebook page “Nicavangelists” or through their web presence at www.nicavangelists.com .) While hosted at Aldersgate, they performed their show “Created” or an enactment of the story of Jonah for eight audiences, totaling around 1,000 people: first for a District-wide performance at Aldersgate, followed by 2 school performances (Healthy Start Elementary and Lakewood Montessori Middle School, 3 church visits (Glendale Heights UMC’s ELL tutoring program, Mt. Sylvan UMC WAM afterschool children, and Aldersgate’s preschool, afterschool, WNL, and Youth small groups). Aldersgate extended generous hospitality, opening our kitchen for their meal preparation, and setting aside several classrooms, and the youth loft. Several members stepped up to help through the week: John Hall, Anne Finch, Jane Bahor, Regina Whitaker, Joyce Mackin and Chick Hinton, Bob de Andrade, Glenn and Sandra Reynolds, as well as staff members Andrew Woods and Evelyn Johnson. As their main host/driver, I was privileged and awed to watch them perform with 100% of their passion and strength over and again, and became increasingly respectful of their humility and servant hearts. I hope you will join me and continue praying for their touring ministry and their ministry in Nicaragua, as well as their tireless leader Jedd Brien and his children. Thank you A ldersgate, for being good hosts for this ministry. Please follow this link to see the Nicavangelists’ thank-you video which features their interaction and performance with our Afterschool kids! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9TJciHkbSw

When you think about AUMC’s finances, more than likely numbers, commas, and decimals come to mind. Some may think of the annual budget. Others may think about monthly giving or the church’s capital debt. While these are important aspects of the church’s finances, they are not our most important numbers. The real story is what your generous and faithful financial support of the church makes possible – creating disciples of Christ. It is the lives touched, needs met, and relationships deepened with our Lord and Savior. Throughout the remainder of the year in addition to being transparent with how the church is operating financially, the Finance Committee wants to highlight a few of the numbers you make possible each month. Income thru March 31st: $243,852.00 Expenses of $ 291,594.00 Net loss of ($ 47,742.00)

MANY WAYS TO GIVE One convenient way to give is to set up an EFT or electronic funds transfer. You can give a one-time gift or set up weekly, or monthly donations. You can set it up yourself by going to our Aldersgate.org website select Mission & Giving then select on-line giving. You may also contact our church treasurer, Mary Taylor (mary@aldersgate.org). You can make donations to the operating budget, the capital campaign or to special ministries such as the Community Backpack Ministry or Urban Ministries, or make a special memorial gift. Another way to give is by donating shares of stock. We use the United Methodist Foundation and Morgan Stanley to assist us with gifts of stock. If you are interested in this option just contact Mary Taylor by email at mary@aldersgate.org and she will give you or your stock broker the necessary paperwork to transfer the stock. Thanks for all that you do to support the many missions and ministries of Aldersgate. Your giving helps support: Habitat, Shoebox Ministry, Urban Ministries, Conduit, Prayer Shawl Ministry, Guatemalan Sewing Machine Ministry, Upper Soccer, Families Moving Forward, Durham Food Pantry Network Jamaican Mission Team, Haiti Mission Team, Music Ministry, Stephen Ministry, Family Ministries, New Baby Ministry, Divorce Care, Adults and Children’s Ministries, Safe Sanctuaries, Youth Ministries, Primetimers and Older Adults, UMM, Women's Circles, Food and Fellowship, Share Your Christmas, Methodist Home for Children, and Endowments just to name a few.
