Experience

At times faith means that we have to "bite the bullet.” The phrase "bite the bullet" comes from the old west. John Wayne, who was a student of history and contemporary affairs, said that the phrase "biting the bullet" was literal in its meaning. People would place a bullet between their teeth and bite down on it to distract them from pain, in an age where there were no pain killers. Faith is our keen ability of bearing the unbearable by "biting the bullet." One pastor visited a victim of a shooting, which had left the victim a paraplegic. His eyes were glazed with drugs, that he had become dependent upon, due to his condition. He was enormously wealthy and lacked nothing that money could buy, but over him hung a cloud of darkness and doubt. He had made a decision to be a cynic and an unbeliever.

the earth. He lost his money, family, friends, health and social status, but he still trusted in his God. He told God that, though He seemed to be allowing some harsh things to happen, Job was sure that God had a better view of things. Job was what I call a "before thinker." He walked and talked with God. He had built up his daily relationship with God in such a way that he was prepared for the hard times. He knew that the nature of the one He had known in the good times had not changed because tides had shifted in his own experience. One boy saw the sign "God loves you" on his grandfather's weather vane on the barn as the directional arrow was pointing to the north (with the wind). He asked his grandfather if God loved him only when the wind was blowing to the north. He told him that the sign was a symbol of God's unchanging love. He said, "God loves us no matter which direction the wind blows." Homer E. Morris, Senior Pastor

Job, at that time, was one of the most powerful men on the face of "Though He slay me, yet I will trust Him." Job 13:15

CONNECTING (CONNECT

WITH GOD AND ONE ANOTHER)

TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH: The Council of Bishops brings you greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who has called us to be servant leaders of the church. In 1812, Bishop Francis Asbury, Bishop William McKendree and General Conference Secretary Daniel Hitt sent the first letter to churches following General Conference. This letter seeks to revive that tradition. Many bishops will also be communicating individually with their own areas. Hundreds of lay and clergy delegates from around the world gathered in Portland, Oregon, along with bishops and pastors, church members and staff, volunteers and visitors, to engage in Christian conferencing, to make decisions for our church’s future, to affirm our global connection, to worship and to celebrate God’s faithfulness. We celebrated the success of our Imagine No Malaria initiative, which seeks to raise $75 million in the fight against malaria, a disease that takes the life of a child in Africa every two minutes. We celebrated our ecumenical partnerships as we move into full Communion with the Uniting Church in Sweden and toward full Communion with the Moravian church. We celebrated our heritage: the 250th anniversary of our oldest church, John Street United Methodist Church, the 200th anniversary of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the 150th anniversary of United Methodist women, the 25th anniversary of Africa University and others. We continued in our acts of repentance with a presentation from the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes about the Methodist involvement in the 1864 Sand Creek massacre. We shared in the consecration of deaconesses and home missioners and the commissioning of missionaries. We moved toward a global Book of Discipline and global Social Principles. We voted to add five new bishops in Africa after 2020, and approved a church wide study on our ecclesiology. The Episcopal address set the tone for the event, focusing on humility and lifting up our accomplishments. We heard from our laity an invitation to members to be more involved in making disciples and getting involved in ministries to bring the love of Christ to others. We heard our young people say they “are engaged in Christ’s journey with energy and love.” We also heard them say clearly that they do not want a divided church and urged us to "be in unity even if we do not have unanimity." They give us hope for our future. The body had difficult and challenging work before it as we acknowledged our differences over human sexuality. Amidst those differences, the delegates affirmed they want their bishops to lead and we found ourselves with an opportunity for a holy moment. We spoke candidly about what divides us and what our church might look like in the future if we dared to consider new possibilities. We offered a way forward, postponing decisions about sexuality matters and committing to having a different kind of global conversation that allows all voices to be heard. Our differences do not keep us from being the body of Christ. They do not keep us from doing good in the world. They do not keep us from making a difference – and so we set forth bold new goals: to make a million new disciples of Jesus Christ; to engage 3 million new people to make a difference in the world; to transform 400 communities for vital abundant living; to reach a million children with lifesaving health interventions; and to double the number of vital congregations.

Most importantly, we affirmed our commitment to stay united. We proved that we are more than debates and divisions, more than rules and resolutions. We stood together as the body of Christ. As we reflect on our time in Portland, our prayer is for unity in the church for the advancement of our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. As John Wesley reminded us, “Best of all, God is with us.”

Signed on behalf of the Council of Bishops, Bishop Bruce R. Ough, president of the Council

Serendipity Sunday School

Each Sunday in Room 207 in the Family Life Center Serendipity Sunday School class will start a new study in June by Trevor Hudson and Jerry P. Haas titled:

THE CYCLE OF GRACE: LIVING IN SACRED BALANCE

Are you soul-weary? Do you struggle to make time for God in the midst of a packed schedule? Or do you sometimes stay so busy doing things for God that you can’t relax and just be ? Jesus faced amazing pressure and overwhelming demands throughout his ministry, but he did not experience the burnout so common today among Christian ministers and laypersons.

THE CYCLE OF GRACE examines 4 components of a grace-filled life: Acceptance, Sustenance, Significance, and Fruitfulness.

COME LEARN THE RHYTHM OF LIVING THAT JESUS DEMONSTRATES THROUGHOUT THE GOSPELS.

Are you going through a difficult time? Stephen Ministers can help. They are members of our Aldersgate family who receive special training that enables them to listen, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support to people going through a difficult time. In fact, their training allows them to provide one-to-one Christian care to those who are experiencing grief, loneliness, divorce, hospitalization, disability, job loss, and many other life struggles. Following the death of his wife, Mike sought out a Stephen Minister. He said, “I had to do something, for I felt like I was losing my mind, for my pain was so intense.” At first, Mike said he was very emotional and tried to hide his grief by making everyone around him believe he was OK. Yet when he got home, he would just sit and cry. He credits his Stephen Minister with helping him find a level of comfort and hope that is working for him. “My Stephen Minister,” Mike said, “helped me to listen for the small, still voice of God and to see that He had been there the whole time to comfort and strengthen me.” Though Mike still has his moments of sadness, he is comforted now by the deep belief that God does love him and will never leave him. If you want to learn more about Aldersgate UMC’s Stephen Ministry program, or if you know of a relative, a friend, or a co-worker, who might benefit, contact Jack Snyder at 919-477-0509 Ext. 303, or email him at: Jack@aldersgate.org.

V ACATION B IBLE S CHOOL AND OXFORD MANOR Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.’ Matthew 19:14 With the help of Five adults, we can bring Fifteen Oxford Manor children to Vacation Bible School ! We need three adults to guide the children through the supper line, help them find a table and get settled. We also need a driver and a monitor for the bus ride to and from Oxford Manor. Since 1988, Aldersgate has reached out to the children of Oxford Manor. We are excited that Kiki Ferrell, the granddaughter of our original liaison Jessie Ferrell, will help register fifteen children to attend Vacation Bible School with us this year. This represents a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn about Jesus, hear the gospel, and experience Christian love and hospitality. Although Ms. Ferrell and some other family members may also be available to help out, we need five other adults to comply to the UMC Safe Sanctuary guidelines. Thank you for making VBS possible for the Oxford Manor children.

If you can help, please contact Lee King leebbtexking@frontier.com

When you think about AUMC’s finances, more than likely numbers, commas, and decimals come to mind. Some may think of the annual budget. Others may think about monthly giving or the church’s capital debt. While these are important aspects of the church’s finances, they are not our most important numbers. The real story is what your generous and faithful financial support of the church makes possible – creating disciples of Christ. It is the lives touched, needs met, and relationships deepened with our Lord and Savior. Throughout the remainder of the year in addition to being transparent with how the church is operating financially, the finance committee wants to highlight a few of the numbers you make possible each month. You can set it up yourself by going to our Aldersgate.org website select Mission & Giving then select on-line giving. You may also contact our church treasurer, Mary Taylor (mary@aldersgate.org). You can make donations to the operating budget, the capital campaign or to special ministries such as the community backpack ministry or urban ministries, or make a special memorial gift. Another way to give is by donating shares of stock. We use the United Methodist Foundation and Morgan Stanley to assist us with gifts of stock.
