Topic of the Month: TIME BLINDNESS

TIME BLINDNESS FOR BUSY BEES!

Time blindness is a significant component of executive functioning challenges, characterized by difficulties in perceiving, estimating, and managing time accurately. Individuals with time blindness often struggle to gauge how long tasks will take, maintain awareness of time passing, or plan appropriately for future events. This executive functioning deficit impacts task prioritization, sequencing activities, and meeting deadlines The disconnect between objective time measurement and subjective time experience creates a persistent gap between intentions and actions, leading to chronic lateness, missed appointments, and difficulty completing multi-step projects.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

For neurodivergent adults, particularly those with ADHD, autism, or other executive functioning differences, time blindness can significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life. Many neurodivergent individuals experience time as either happening "now" or "not now," with future events feeling abstract until they suddenly become immediate This alternative relationship with time can lead to hyperfocus (losing track of hours while engaged in captivating activities) or task paralysis (underestimating the time needed for complex responsibilities) In professional settings, neurodivergent adults may face criticism for time management issues that are neurologically based rather than motivational, creating additional stress and masking behaviors that further deplete cognitive resources.
