DEAR FATHER

Welcome to The Comfort Zone, where we provide discussions and resources related to mental health.

Topic of the Month: Levels of Disclosure LEVELS OF DISCLOSURE

Neurodivergent adults face unique challenges in the workplace, especially for those of us who are late- or self-diagnosed and never received support during our school years. Many of us struggle to decide whether it would benefit us more to continue masking our traits at the expense of our own health, or to “unmask” by disclosing our neurodivergency to our employers in hopes of improving workplace conditions. This month, we’ll walk you through the pros and cons of self-disclosure, and provide a few resources to help you do it successfully.

MORE RESOURCES

3.

The information provided here comes from 3 resources that may be of use to you: Neurodivergent Rebel’s Autistic Disclosure Toolkit 1. Neurodivergent Insights’ Self-Disclosure, SelfAdvocacy Worksheets 2. Kidwell, Clancy, & Fisher 2023: The devil you know versus the devil you don’t: Disclosure versus masking in the workplace

7

PROS & CONS of SELF-DISCLOSURE

This resource covers the advantages and disadvantages that neurodivergent people may encounter when deciding whether or not to self-disclose our identities to our employers. Along with deciding whether or not self-disclosure is right for you, also consider when you would like to communicate this information (during or after the hiring process) and how you would like to communicate it The worksheets on the next two pages can serve as a resource while you work it out!

DISADVANTAGES ADVANTAGES

Risk of stigma (especially for women and minorities)

Opens up possibilities for victimization, harrassment, discrimination, etc.

We’ll be compared to other neurodivergent adults when our experiences are unique.

Some people simply won’t believe you, especially if you are autistic and high-masking.

Acommodations are not guaranteed.

Ideally, you will get the accommodations you need!

Eliminate workplace barriers related to executive functioning and self-regulation

Less anxiety about concealing your neurodivergence

Less masking & performing job duties without support

Normalizing self-advocacy as a neurodivergent adult will make it easier for others to get the accommodations they need, too, and increase the visibility of our community in a positive way.

8

Self-Disclosure + Education + Request = Self-Advocacy

Self-Disclosure:

In order to self-advocate, we must talk about being neurodivergent to some degree. Revealing an invisible identity can cause anxiety, especially when talking to an authority figure like a boss.

Education:

Explain what neurodivergence looks like to you personally. This often involves deconstructing and challenging stereotypes.

Request:

The primary goal of selfadvocacy is to get the accommodations you need. Sometimes all that is needed is the request, without any self-disclosure or education.

I remember things better if they are written down

Sometimes I hyperfixate on a task and lose track of time.

My auditory processing style makes it hard to filter out background noise, so I wear earplugs.

Can we dim the lights?

One second, I’d like to write this down. Do you mind if I record our meeting?

Term Examples Your Turn :)
This formula was developed by Neurodivergent Insights The table below is developed from this resource!

Partial vs Full Disclosure

Here are some life areas identified by Neurodivergent Rebel where you might want to ask for accommodations in the workplace. After identifying your need, write two alternate versions of how you might educate others by either partially disclosing the trait you are accommodating, or fully disclosing your brain type. Which feels more comfortable and/or effective to you? Remember that what matters most is letting others know how they can help you; it is up to you how much you would like to share. Life Area Need
