FOREWORD Sculpture, for Pablo Atchugarry, is a way of being in the world—a quiet reckoning between hand, stone, and spirit. His forms arise from a deep, unspoken dialogue with material.

Atchugarry began his artistic career as a painter, but it was sculpture that ultimately captured his imagination. A visit to the famed marble quarries of Carrara proved transformative; shortly after, he relocated to Italy in 1979 and began a profound, enduring engagement with the luminous white marble once prized by Michelangelo, Antonio Canova, and generations of sculptors before him. This relationship with marble gave rise to the towering, undulating forms that have become Atchugarry’s signature style.

For over four decades, Atchugarry has cultivated a sculptural language that harmonizes the formal discipline of European classicism with post-constructivist abstraction and spiritual sensibilities rooted in the cosmologies of pre-Columbian America, earning him international recognition and placing him at the forefront of contemporary sculpture.

His iconic creations evoke rising columns, unfolding wings, or emerging flames—forms that echo the grandeur of the classical past while conveying a timeless sense of aspiration.

While he draws on the legacy of modernist sculptors such as Constantin Brâncuși and Isamu Noguchi, his work is distinctly lyrical, shaped by his Latin American roots and early exposure to the form and structure of Latin American Constructivism.

The works in this exhibition showcase Atchugarry’s mastery of form and his commitment to uplifting the spirit. Although rooted in abstraction, they are rich with symbolic meaning, evoking themes of light, rebirth, nature, and transcendence. Balancing delicacy with monumentality and density with elevation, embracing the paradoxes of both material and meaning.

Whether in marble or bronze, both new works from the studio as well as a few historic pieces come together, radiating a rhythmic stillness akin to music or a meditative gesture.

In presenting Atchugarry’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery, we are honored to showcase not only an artist who has profoundly advanced the medium of sculpture, but one who has also dedicated himself to fostering cultural exchange and artistic education, most notably through the founding of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry in Uruguay, a philanthropic endeavor that reflects his enduring belief in art as a shared and transformative force.

The Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry (b. 1954, Montevideo) has become internationally renowned for his sinuous and monolithic marble sculptures, a practice he has honed for decades that echoes the movement and erosion of nature through simplified forms. The artist joins the ranks of the ancient masters of the medium, like Michelangelo, working in a ritualistic state to materialize planes and lines that emerge from the blocks of marble and extend toward the cosmos.

Atchugarry began his practice at eight-years-old while painting alongside his father, who once trained under the Uruguayan Constructivist Joaquín Torres-García. His first solo exhibition was held in Montevideo in 1972, and he would exhibit his paintings throughout South America before departing to Europe in the late 1970s, where his first encounter with Carrara marble would spark a lifelong reverence for the venerated material, and an emotion that he describes as akin to falling in love for the first time.

In 1978, the artist had his first solo exhibition in Lecco, the idyllic Italian city on the shore of Lake Como where he still maintains a home and studio. He began working almost exclusively with Carrara marble in 1979, completing his first monumental sculpture—an ode to Michelangelo titled La Pietà (1982–83)—in 1983 using a twelve-ton block of the metamorphic stone.

La Pietà and several other masterworks Atchugarry sculpted during his career are installed on the grounds of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry (MACA) in Punta del Este, which opened in 2022. A project overseen by the celebrated Uruguayan-Canadian architect Carlos Ott, the 75,000-square-foot museum was constructed with red grandis eucalyptus wood and contains five galleries, a panoramic sculpture park, and a 500-piece collection mostly comprising works from Atchugarry’s personal collection.

Atchugarry has expressed that MACA is part of the legacy he will leave to Uruguay, and to humanity. But decades before his eponymous museum was launched, the Museo Pablo Atchugarry in Lecco was a predecessor of this vision, founded in 1999 as a space where visitors could become closer to Atchugarry’s art and even observe him working in his studio next door.

The founding of the Fundação Pablo Atchugarry in Manantiales followed in 2007.

The artist’s epic contributions to the time-honored tradition of Carrara marble sculpture were recognized in 2002 when he received the Michelangelo Prize, and again in 2003 when he represented Uruguay in the Fiftieth International Exhibition of the Visual Arts at the Venice Biennale. Much earlier, Uruguay commemorated Atchugarry when his work Semilla de la Esperanza (Seed of Hope) (1996)—a nearly thirteen-foot-tall Carrara marble sculpture that spirals ethereally toward the sky—was permanently installed at the Parque de Esculturas del Edificio Libertad in Montevideo.

Hollis Taggart in New York has organized four solo exhibitions of Atchugarry’s work, including Heroic Activities in 2012, Lives in Stone in 2014, and Invocations of the Soul in 2016. For this exhibition, Secrets of the Material, he has created twelve new sculptures in Carrara marble that will be joined by several historical works.

In this conversation, ahead of the exhibition, Atchugarry discusses the beginnings of his career, his enrapture with Carrara marble, the founding of his foundation and museums, and the immortality of the artist.

Your parents, María Cristina Bonomi and Pedro Atchugarry Rizzo, were artists and art collectors. What was your childhood like, and how did your upbringing influence your trajectory as an artist?

My childhood was filled with an artistic atmosphere. I was fortunate that my mother and father were creators and had a great interest in art in all its forms, whether it was

theater, sculpture, or painting. They always encouraged me to explore that path.

I discovered that I wanted to be an artist when I was eight-years-old. My first memories are of my father’s works. My father studied under Joaquín Torres-García, who was born in Uruguay but later worked in Europe. His training was primarily in Europe—in Catalonia, then in Paris, where he met Picasso and became acquainted with the European avant-gardes, beginning with Piet Mondrian.

My father collected invaluable knowledge from the contemporary avant-gardes and passed down that knowledge to me. His stories enriched my view of the visual arts.

Later in life, he couldn’t continue his own artistic path, so I felt the need to continue it for him. But I always knew that I would be an artist and have never imagined another path. It has been a very natural process. I was lucky to discover it at an early age, and I’m now sixty-nine-years-old. That’s six decades of work and life in art. It’s unusual for a person—for an artist—to have such continuous contact with their practice.

What are some of your earliest memories of creating art?

When my father painted, I painted close to him. He greatly influenced me. Using minimal colors, I started with oil on paper or cardboard. In the 1960s, he was making compositions that combined jute, wood, glass, and other materials. These were some of the works that impressed me the most.

They were abstract works, with some slight figuration, and there was a sense of freedom in the composition. His manipulation of

materials helped inform my own experimentations. I would find pieces of wood or other materials on-the-go and began working with them.

I started out painting but was also experimenting with vertical sculptures made from concrete, cement, and sand. My practice started with constructions—like toy-like maquettes—and then I created my first fullscale sculpture, which was a horse that I completed when I was seventeen in 1971.

Around that time, I visited the studio of the Argentine-Uruguayan sculptor Adela Neffa.

That was when I began to understand that there was a world of art outside of my father’s world, or outside of the works that I saw him create. I learned of other artists along the way.

After these experiences, painting and sculpture started to go hand-in-hand in my life.

You also briefly studied architecture. Why did you choose to not pursue it as a career path?

I left architecture because I wanted to pursue art full-time. I felt that all my energy had to be on the path of art. I could have gone down the path of architecture and have always had a great passion for architecture and for the work of architects. A sculptor and an architect face some similar problems, but a sculptor is more liberated. The architect has to consider functionality and practicality.

There’s no need for a sculpture to function.

I’m absolutely free when I work.

You began exhibiting your work as a teenager. What are some references from that era of your life that still resonate with you?

I had my first solo show in 1972, when I was

eighteen. I was interested in prehistoric sculpture from the pre-Columbian world and the prehistoric Venus, then I started studying Picasso, who was an artist that I loved and had a great influence on me. He and the ancient artists were my first references, then the Surrealists. Surrealism was a whole world that I primarily learned of through books and other means. I had no direct access to this world at the time.

Throughout the 1970s, I was showing works in Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Porto Alegre, and Rio de Janeiro—primarily painting exhibitions. Through these experiences, I also had the privilege to meet artists like the Brazilian painter Iberê Camargo, for example.

Other worlds began to take shape through new artists and new movements. But the big evolution in my formation as an artist came after my first trip to Europe in 1977.

What first attracted you to Europe and what did you hope to discover there?

I first went to Paris because Picasso, Modigliani, Braque, Calder, and Soulages, among others—all the great artists went there. Paris was considered the center of the world. I had a great desire to see and understand the places where these artists had worked. I visited all the museums—the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, among others. What I had seen in photographs, I could now see in person. I continued to travel throughout Europe to visit more museums and encountered many historical artists and exhibitions. I vividly remember a Brancusi exhibition at the Pompidou, and felt that I was witnessing the peak of twentieth-century art in person. I also began

to study Renaissance art and Michelangelo.

Seeing the work of these great masters in front of me felt very close, even though five centuries were between us. These pieces ultimately inspired me to begin working in marble.

How did your first experimentations in marble come about?

I started with sandstone, the Lutetian limestone known as the “Paris stone.” But my dream was to work in marble because that was the material of Michelangelo and the other masters.

The Greeks, Cyclades, Romans, Etruscans then later the Renaissance artists and the great Modern artists like Henry Moore and Brancusi all worked in marble. Marble fascinated me. It was like finding true love for the first time.

Forty-five years ago, I went to the Carrara quarry in Tuscany and had the opportunity to make my first marble sculpture, called Lumière (1979). My drive to work with marble was intensely strong. It takes between fifteen to forty-five million years for the marble form.

I thought about how to make this natural biomaterial work—how to make it speak, and how it might complement nature.

How did your visual vocabulary begin to transform after you started working with marble?

I started with illustration, primarily focused on figuration, but soon abandoned it. Looking back, it’s not that I abandoned it, but that figuration was synthesized with abstraction.

I was initially drawn to illustrating the eyes, the nose, and the mouth, but then I lost interest in the figurative details. I became more concerned with the line itself—a line that goes

upward into the sky or a line that simplifies the figure. My first solo exhibition made up entirely of marble sculptures was at the Bramantino’s Crypt in Milan in 1987. Most of the works were abstract. It was a big moment and a pivotal turning point in my career.

Years before the founding of the Fundação Pablo Atchugarry and later the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry, you also established a museum in Lecco in the late 1990s.

Can you speak further of its initial purpose?

Ahead of the [Lecco] museum’s inauguration, I was thinking about having a space to showcase my paintings and sculptures and to display the archives, which include my publications and library. I wanted to create a place where people could learn of and study my work. That museum is no longer active because the brand has now moved to Uruguay.

But this purpose still remains: to create a place where sculpture can be in dialogue with nature and with humans and to preserve my legacy.

Most of the works in the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry’s collection come from your personal collection. How did you begin amassing your collection?

It was very common for artists—for colleagues, so to speak—to do exchanges. I couldn’t do exchanges very often in the beginning but that changed when I started to have the economic means to do so. Perhaps the first painting I acquired was a work by Joaquín Torres-García. There was also an international circuit of artists that I started collecting like Carlos Cruz-Diez and Jesús Rafael Soto,

and the artist Louise Nevelson, whose constructions I love. Some other early acquisitions I made were of the work of two Uruguayan artists—José Pedro Costigliolo and Maria Freire—who were a couple who worked together. I was following their practice very closely and acquired many works by them.

Our entire house is filled with the works of these two artists.

My immediate collection is not typically made up of my works—my sculptures go out on their own path. The museum opened with a show of works by Christo and JeanneClaude, who I did not know personally but would have liked to. I was fortunate to collaborate with their Foundation. Although the two artists had passed, it was like they were still alive in the installation. Art makes that possible; the artist living through their works.

As an artist myself, it’s a way to understand the world of other creators.

How has your own practice and approach evolved over the years?

When we look at my work from twenty or thirty years ago, it’s evidently different. The material and the image have transformed.

Today, the works are more subtle and delicate.

They have finer lines, which creates a stronger dialogue with light. This relationship between line and light is important. Currently, my work is becoming even finer—almost so fine that it is pushing the limits of the material. I strive to delve into the soul of the created matter, which is very different from the understanding I had in my earlier years. I have great knowledge and command of the material now.

In preparation for this exhibition with Hollis Taggart in New York, what have you reflected on?

I wanted to take stock of my career and reflect on my journey as an artist. The gallery and I chose to focus on the expression that represents me the most, and as such all the artworks are in marble. There are some historical pieces but most are from the latest period of my practice. This year, I turn seventy-years-old; it also marks the fortyfifth anniversary of my first marble sculpture.

This exhibition highlights a peak in the evolution of my work, emphasizing my continued passion and interest executing my work. Most contemporary artists—especially in the Western world—don’t directly carve their sculptures. Instead, often a threedimensional model is sent out to be scanned and made by machines. In my mind, I believe that process detaches the artist from the work itself.

That is what differentiates me. I work with the material, always hands-on, every day.

I strive to discover the message within the material. I have absolutely no detachment from my sculpture. I create intentionally and directly.

Tuvo su primera exposición individual en Montevideo en 1972, y continuaría exhibiendo sus cuadros por todo Sudamérica antes de marcharse a Europa a fines de la década de 1970. Ahí, su primer encuentro con el mármol de Carrara detonaría una reverencia por el venerado material que lo acompañaría de por vida, al igual que una emoción que describe como algo parecido a enamorarse por primera vez.

En 1978, el artista tuvo su primera exposición individual en Lecco, la idílica ciudad italiana a orillas del lago de Como, donde aún conserva una casa y un estudio. Sus padres, María Cristina Bonomi y Pedro Atchugarry Rizzo, eran artistas y coleccionistas de arte. ¿Cómo fue su infancia, y qué influencia tuvo su educación en su trayectoria como artista?

Mi infancia estuvo llena de una atmósfera artística. Tuve la suerte de que tanto mi madre como mi padre fueran creadores y tuvieran un gran interés en todas las formas del arte, ya fuera el teatro, la escultura o la pintura.

Siempre me alentaron a explorar ese camino.

Descubrí que quería ser artista a los ocho años. Mis primeros recuerdos son de la obra de mi padre. Mi padre estudió con Joaquín Torres-García, quien había nacido en Uruguay, pero trabajó más tarde en Europa. Su formación fue principalmente europea: en Cataluña y más tarde en París, donde conoció a Picasso y se familiarizó con la vanguardia europea, empezando por Piet Mondrian.

Mi padre reunió un conocimiento invaluable de los movimientos de vanguardia contemporáneos, y me transmitió ese conocimiento. Sus historias enriquecieron mi perspectiva de las artes visuales. Más tarde en su vida ya no pudo continuar su propio camino artístico, así que yo sentí la necesidad de continuarlo por él. Pero siempre supe que yo sería un artista, y nunca me he imaginado ningún otro camino. Ha sido un proceso muy natural. Tuve la fortuna de descubrirlo a una edad temprana, y ahora tengo sesenta y nueve años. Estamos hablando de seis décadas de trabajo y vida en el arte. Es poco común que una persona, un artista, tenga un contacto tan continuo con su práctica.

¿Cuáles son sus primeros recuerdos como creador de arte?

Cuando mi padre pintaba, yo pintaba cerca de él. Él tuvo una gran influencia sobre mí. Utilizando colores mínimos, empecé con óleo sobre papel o cartón. En la década de 1960, él estaba creando composiciones que combinaban yute, madera, vidrio y otros materiales. Éstas fueron algunas de las obras que más me impresionaron. Eran obras abstractas con algo de figurativo, y había en la composición una sensación de libertad.

Su manipulación de los materiales me ayudó a permear mis propias experimentaciones.

Encontraba pedazos de madera o de otros materiales sobre la marcha y empezaba a trabajar con ellos.

Empecé con la pintura, pero también experimentaba con esculturas verticales hechas de concreto, cemento y arena. Mi práctica empezó con construcciones, como maquetas de juguete, y entonces realicé mi primera escultura a gran escala, que era un caballo que terminé en 1971, a los 17 años.

Por aquella época visité el estudio de la escultora argentina-uruguaya Adela Neffa. Fue entonces que empecé a comprender que existía un mundo del arte fuera del mundo de mi padre, o fuera de las obras que lo veía crear. Fui descubriendo a otros artistas. Tras estas experiencias, la pintura y la escultura empezaron a ir mano a mano en mi vida.

toda mi energía tenía que estar en el camino del arte. Podría haber seguido el camino de la arquitectura, por la que siempre he tenido una gran pasión, así como por el trabajo de los arquitectos. Un escultor y un arquitecto enfrentan algunos problemas similares, pero el escultor está más liberado. El arquitecto tiene que considerar la funcionalidad y el sentido práctico. Una escultura no necesita funcionar. Cuando trabajo, soy absolutamente libre.

Usted empezó a exhibir su obra de adolescente. ¿Hay algunas referencias de esa época de su vida que siguen encontrando eco en usted?

Mi primera exposición individual fue en 1972, cuando tenía dieciocho años. Me interesaban la escultura prehistórica del mundo precolombino y la Venus prehistórica. Luego empecé a estudiar a Picasso, un artista que me apasionaba y que tuvo una gran influencia sobre mí. Él y los artistas del mundo antiguo fueron mis primeras referencias; luego los surrealistas. El surrealismo era todo un mundo del que aprendí principalmente a través de libros y otros medios. En esa época no tenía acceso directo a él.

También estudió brevemente arquitectura. ¿Por qué decidió no seguir ese camino profesional?

Dejé la arquitectura porque quería dedicarme al arte de tiempo completo. Sentía que

A lo largo de la década de 1970 exhibía mi obra en Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Porto Alegre y Río de Janeiro, sobre todo en exposiciones de pintura. Gracias a estas experiencias tuve también el privilegio de conocer a otros artistas como, por ejemplo, el pintor brasileño Iberê Camargo. Otros mundos empezaron a cobrar forma a través de nuevos artistas y nuevos movimientos. Pero la gran evolución en mi formación como artista llegó tras mi primer viaje a Europa, en 1977. ¿Qué fue lo primero que lo atrajo a Europa, y qué esperaba descubrir ahí?

Primero fui a París, porque ahí habían ido Picasso, Modigliani, Braque, Calder y Soulages, entre otros: todos los grandes artistas. París era considerado el centro del mundo. Tenía un gran deseo de ver y entender los lugares donde estos artistas habían trabajado. Visité todos los museos: el Louvre y el Centre Pompidou, entre otros. Ahora podía ver en persona lo que había visto en fotografías.

Seguí viajando por toda Europa para visitar más museos, y me encontré con muchos artistas históricos y exposiciones. Recuerdo vívidamente una exposición de Brancusi en el Pompidou, y sentía que estaba siendo testigo personalmente del apogeo del arte del siglo XX. También empecé a estudiar el arte del Renacimiento, y a Miguel Ángel. Al ver la obra de estos grandes maestros frente a mí, la sentía muy cercana, aunque nos separaran cinco siglos. Estas piezas fueron lo que finalmente me inspiró a empezar a trabajar con mármol.

¿Cómo se dieron sus primeros experimentos con mármol?

Empecé con arenisca, la piedra caliza luteciana conocida como “piedra de París”. Pero mi sueño era trabajar en mármol, porque ese era el material de Miguel Ángel y de los otros maestros. Los griegos, los artistas cicládicos, los romanos, los etruscos y, más tarde, los artistas del Renacimiento y los grandes artistas modernos, como Henry Moore y Brancusi, trabajaron todos en mármol. El mármol me fascinó. Fue como encontrar el amor verdadero por primera vez.

Hace cuarenta y cinco años fui a la cantera de Carrara en la Toscana, y tuve la oportunidad de realizar mi primera escultura en mármol, titulada Lumière (1979). Mi urgencia por trabajar con mármol era intensamente poderosa. La formación del mármol requiere de entre quince y cuarenta y cinco millones de años. Pensé en cómo hacer funcionar este biomaterial natural: cómo hacerlo hablar, y cómo podría complementar a la naturaleza.” ¿Cómo empezó a transformarse su vocabulario visual tras haber empezado a trabajar con mármol?

Yo empecé con la ilustración, concentrado principalmente en lo figurativo, pero pronto la abandoné. En retrospectiva, no es que la haya abandonado, sino que la figuración se sintetizó con la abstracción. Inicialmente me atraía ilustrar los ojos, la nariz y la boca, pero luego perdí interés en los detalles figurativos. Me empezó a importar más la línea misma: una línea que sube hasta el cielo o una línea que simplifica la figura. Mi primera exposición individual integrada por

completo por esculturas de mármol fue en la cripta de Bramantino, en Milán, en 1987. La mayoría de esas piezas eran abstractas. Fue un momento clave, y un giro decisivo en mi carrera.

Años antes de que se estableciera la Fundação Pablo Atchugarry, y más tarde el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry, fundó también un museo en Lecco, a finales de la década de 1990. ¿Qué puede decirnos sobre su propósito inicial?

Antes de la inauguración del museo en Lecco, estaba pensando en contar con un espacio para exhibir mis pinturas y esculturas, y en donde pudiera exhibir también los archivos, que incluyen mis publicaciones y mi biblioteca. Quería crear un lugar donde la gente pudiera conocer y estudiar mi obra. Ese museo ya no está activo, porque la firma se ha trasladado ahora a Uruguay. Pero este propósito permanece: crear un espacio donde la escultura pueda estar en diálogo con la naturaleza y con los seres humanos, y preservar mi legado.

La mayoría de las obras en la colección del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry provienen de su colección personal. ¿Cómo empezó a reunir su colección?

Entre los artistas (entre colegas, por decirlo así) era muy común hacer intercambios. Al principio, yo no podía hacer intercambios con mucha frecuencia, pero eso cambió cuando empecé a tener los medios económicos para hacerlo. Quizá el primer cuadro que adquirí fue una obra de Joaquín TorresGarcía. Había también un círculo internacional de artistas que empecé a coleccionar, como Carlos Cruz-Diez y Jesús Rafael Soto, y la

artista Louise Nevelson, cuyas construcciones me encantan. Algunas otras adquisiciones tempranas que hice fueron de la obra de dos artistas uruguayos: José Pedro Costigliolo y María Freire, que eran pareja y trabajaban juntos.

Yo seguía su práctica muy de cerca, y adquirí muchas obras de ellos. Nuestra casa entera está llena de la obra de estos dos artistas.

Mi colección inmediata no está típicamente integrada por mi obra: mis esculturas siguen su propio camino. El museo se inauguró con una exposición de obra de Christo y Jeanne-Claude, a quienes no conocí personalmente, aunque me hubiera gustado. Tuve la fortuna de colaborar en su Fundación.

Aunque ambos artistas ya habían fallecido, era como si siguieran vivos en la instalación.

El arte vuelve eso posible: los artistas viven a través de su obra. Siendo artista yo mismo, es una forma de entender el mundo de otros creadores. ¿Cómo han evolucionado su propia práctica y enfoque al paso de los años?

Cuando vemos mi obra de hace veinte o treinta años, ésta es evidentemente distinta. El material y la imagen se han transformado.

Hoy día, las obras son más sutiles y delicadas.

Tienen líneas más finas, lo que crea un diálogo más intenso con la luz. Esta relación entre la línea y la luz es importante. Actualmente, mi obra se está volviendo aún más sutil: tan sutil que casi rebasa los límites del material.

Me esfuerzo por ahondar en el alma de la materia creada, cosa que es muy distinta de la percepción que tenía en mis primeros años. Ahora tengo un gran conocimiento y dominio del material.

¿Sobre qué ha estado reflexionando al prepararse para esta exposición con la galería Hollis Taggart en Nueva York?

Quería hacer un balance de mi carrera y reflexionar sobre mi trayectoria como artista.

La galería y yo decidimos concentrarnos en la expresión que mejor me representa, y como tal, todas las obras son en mármol. Hay algunas piezas históricas, pero la mayoría son del último periodo de mi práctica. Este año cumpliré setenta años de edad; será también el aniversario número cuarenta y cinco de mi primera escultura en mármol.

Esta exposición pone de relieve un momento cumbre en la evolución de mi obra, enfatizando mi pasión e interés continuos al ejecutar mi trabajo. La mayoría de los artistas contemporáneos (especialmente en el mundo occidental) no tallan sus esculturas directamente. En lugar de ello, a menudo se manda escanear un modelo tridimensional que es luego creado por máquinas. En mi parecer, dicho proceso separa al artista de la obra misma.

Eso es lo que me hace distinto. Yo trabajo con el material, siempre manos a la obra, todos los días. Me esfuerzo por descubrir el mensaje dentro del material. No existe ninguna separación en lo absoluto de mi escultura.

Creo intencional y directamente.

BIOGRAPHY Pablo Atchugarry was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on August 23, 1954. His parents, María Cristina Bonomi and Pedro Atchugarry, both passionate art lovers, realized their son’s skills and encouraged him to express himself through drawing and painting from an early age, a discipline in which Pedro himself engaged on a part-time basis, albeit with great commitment. In 1965, at the age of eleven, Atchugarry took part in his first-ever exhibition in Montevideo, a collective event to which he contributed two paintings.

Subsequently, he pursued his artmaking and began to experiment with different materials such as clay, cement, iron, and wood. In 1971, he created his first sculpture in concrete, titled Caballo [Horse]. He gradually began to take an interest in the expressive possibilities of these materials: sand and cement, sometimes adding iron and lead. This is how Escritura Simbólica [Symbolic Writing], Estructura Cósmica [Cosmic Structure], Metamorfosis Prehistórica [Prehistoric Metamorphosis], Maternidad [Motherhood] and Metamorfosis Femenina [Feminine Metamorphosis] saw the light in 1974, in which the profound and specific aesthetic sense that now characterizes him was complemented by a beautiful and heartrending expressive capacity.

In 1972, Atchugarry staged his first individual exhibition of drawings and paintings at the SUBTE Exhibition Center in Montevideo.

In 1977, the sculptor began to roam Europe, visiting Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy.

He held his first individual painting exhibition in Lecco (Italy) in the Visconti Gallery in 1978.

That same year, Atchugarry showcased his

work in La Nuova Sfera Gallery in Milan and in La Colonna Gallery in Como, when he presented drawings in Chinese ink and watercolor. On that occasion, Mario Radice penned an article for the La Provincia, titled “In La Colonna, Excellent Chinese Ink Drawings by the Uruguayan Sculptor and Painter Atchugarry.”

In 1979, this Uruguayan with an Italian heart saw one of his dreams come true: his first individual exhibition in Paris at the Maison de l’Amérique Latine. During his stay in Paris, he created the preparatory drawing of La Lumière [The Light], his first sculpture in marble, for which he moved to Carrara.

His encounter with marble and its quarries literally bewitched him forever: it was the discovery of a material that would be with him for the rest of his life. An apothegm by the sculptor helps us to grasp this mystic, beautiful, and primitive relationship: “It was like finding true love.” After that year, Atchugarry would return to Carrara on countless occasions to personally choose the monumental blocks of marble that he would use in his work.

The Uruguayan says that his sculptures are born of his direct dialog with the material, which he calls, following the pantheist conception to which he innately relates the “Children of the Mountain.”

In 1982, he decided to settle in the city of Lecco, and after a long spell at Carrara he found, in the quarry Il Polvaccio, the twelve-ton block of marble in which he would sculpt La Pietà [The Mercy], a deeply personal and heterodox religious creation nevertheless reminiscent of his admiration for Michelangelo. This work, which the artist completed in 1983, is now housed in its own lay chapel in the sculpture

park of the Foundation of Manantiales, a gorgeous natural beauty spot in the Department of Maldonado, Uruguay, between the countryside and the seaside.

During 1987, the artist’s works were exhibited in the crypt of Bramantino of the Basilica of San Nazaro in Brolo, Milan, with a presentation by Raffaele De Grada. As of 1989, Atchugarry began to express himself through monumental pieces which now form part of public and private collections the world over.

In 1996, a year in which the artist also dabbled in olive wood, bronze and Portuguese pink marble, he sculpted Semilla de la esperanza [Seed of Hope] for the Sculpture Park of the Government House in Montevideo, and in 1997 he staged an exhibition in Caracas, where he met Jesús-Rafael Soto and other colleagues of exquisite renown and sensitivity.

In 1998, the Veranneman Foundation in Belgium organized an individual exhibition of his sculptures accompanied by an essay by Professor Willem Elias.

On September 25, 1999, the Pablo Atchugarry Museum in Lecco was officially opened, housing the standing exhibition of the work that plots Atchugarry’s artistic path, from his early paintings to the most recent sculptures, as well as the archive of his output.

In 2001, the city of Milan hosted the Le infinite evoluzioni del marmo [The Infinite Evolutions of Marble] retrospective exhibition at the Isimbardi Palace. That same year, Atchugarry created the imposing six-meter-high marble sculpture called Obelisco del Terzo Millennio [Obelisk of the Third Millennium] for the city of Manzano (Udine). He also won a national contest to create a monument which was to be

a testimonial to civilization and to the work ethic, which was unveiled in Lecco in May 2002.

In recognition of his artistic career, in July 2002, he was honored with the Michelangelo Award from the city of Carrara. During this period, Atchugarry worked on several projects, including the Ideales [Ideals] sculpture, for the fiftieth anniversary of the coronation of Prince Rainier of Monaco, which now stands in the Avenue Princesse Grace in Montecarlo.

In 2003, Atchugarry represented Uruguay at the Fiftieth Venice Biennial with Soñando la Paz [Dreaming Peace], an installation comprised of eight marble sculptures. That same year, he assembled his second exhibition at the Veranneman Foundation in Belgium and created the Ascensión [Ascension], a sculpture for the Fran Daurel Foundation in Barcelona. Then in 2004, twenty-five years on from his last exhibition in Uruguay, the Tejería Loppacher Gallery staged his first individual exhibition of sculpture work in Punta del Este. The following year, the National Museum of Fine Arts of Buenos Aires organized an individual exhibition of his work.

In 2006, the Groeningemuseum in the city of Bruges organized a major retrospective exhibition of Atchugarry with works culled from private collections from all over the world.

Four years later, the Museum purchased a sculpture for its own collection. That same year, the José Berardo Collection in Portugal purchased Camino vital [Life’s Path] (1999), a work of almost five meters high for the Belém Cultural Center in Lisbon.

The Pablo Atchugarry Foundation of Manantiales (Uruguay) was created in 2007

to provide a meeting point for artists from all disciplines, an ideal nexus between nature and art where every recital, every exhibition, every conference is free and open to children of all ages. That same year, Atchugarry completed his first eight-meter-high sculpture, titled Nel cammino della luce [On the Path of Light], sculpted from a single block of Carrara marble weighing in at forty-eight tons for the Loris Fontana Collection in Italy.

In 2007, a traveling exhibition of his sculptures toured different sites in Brazil: the Bank of Brazil Cultural Center in Brasilia, the MuBE (Brazilian Museum of Sculpture) of São Paolo, and the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Curitiba. This exhibition was accompanied by a text penned by Luca Massimo Barbero, titled “Lo spazio plastico della luce” [“The Plastic Space of Light”].

In 2008, Uruguay’s foremost museum, the National Museum of Visual Arts, organized a retrospective exhibition of his work spanning the last fifteen years of his artistic output, a unique symbolic testimonial to the artist’s importance. In 2009, a monumental five-meter-high work called Luz y energía de Punta del Este [Light and Energy of Punta del Este], executed in Carrara marble, was officially unveiled in the famous Uruguayan seaside resort of Punta del Este.

After seven years of hard work, in 2011 Atchugarry completed Cosmic Embrace, a sculpture towering more than eight meters high, cut out of a fifty-six-ton block of marble.

In November that same year he held his first individual exhibition in New York at Hollis Taggart Galleries. In March 2012, the Times Square Alliance chose his Dreaming New York

piece to be exhibited in Times Square during the eighteenth edition of the Armory Show of New York. In July that same year, two stainless steel sculptures were exhibited in the gardens of St. James’s Square in London as part of the City of Sculpture program organized by the Westminster City Council.

Towards the end of 2013, the Electa publishing house in Milan produced two volumes of the Catalogo Generale della scultura di Pablo Atchugarry [General Catalog of the Sculptures of Pablo Atchugarry], curated by Professor Carlo Pirovano. The third equally important volume, another extraordinary landmark for a living Latin American artist, was completed in 2019.

In 2014, the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture of São Paulo hosted the largest-ever retrospective edition of Atchugarry’s work, titled A viagem pela matéria [A Journey through Matter]. Between April 2015 and February 2016, the Museo dei Fori Imperiali of Rome housed, at Mercati di Traiano, the Città eterna, eterni marmi [Eternal City, Eternal Marble] exhibition, a major retrospective collection comprising more than forty works.

The Pablo Atchugarry Foundation was officially opened in Miami in 2018. Subsequently, at the beginning of 2019, the President of the Italian Republic bestowed the honorary title of Ufficiale dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia [Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy] upon him for his work in bringing Italy and Uruguay together culturally.

In May 2019, the Contini Art Gallery in Venice inaugurated an individual exhibition titled The Movement of Light. That same year, between June and September, the individual

exhibition called The Evolution of a Dream, organized jointly with the Communal of Pietrasanta, was staged in the Piazza del Duomo, together with a selection of monumental marble, bronze and steel sculptures in the church and the cloister of Sant’Agostino.

In July 2019, the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa provided the incomparable backdrop for the Alla conquista della luce [Conquering Light] exhibition, accompanied by an essay authored

by Luciano Caprile. In December that same year, the Dialog in black and white joint exhibition was held in Miami. An exchange between two apparently different, albeit deeply similar souls: those of Atchugarry and Louise Nevelson; work and time were the variables around which this intimate connection was structured.

In January 2022, in Manantiales (Uruguay), he inaugurated the MACA (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry), a museum designed by the architect Carlos Ott, dedicated to hosting works by masters of contemporary art. Later in December 2022, the City of Lecco bestowed the San Nicolo d’Oro upon Atchugarry, an honor reserved for meritorious citizens. In March 2023, the municipality of Maldonado (Uruguay) accorded him the honor of Distinguished Citizen of the Department of Maldonado. Two documentaries about his life were made during the same period: Atchugarry Monumental, directed

by Alejandro Berger and Luis Ara, and The Children of the Mountain, directed by Mercedes Sader.

From May to November 2023, the municipality of Lecco organized the self-curated anthological exhibition Pablo Atchugarry: A Life between Lecco and the World at the

Palazzo del Paure to celebrate fofty-five years of the artist’s work in Lecco. In July that same year, on the occasion of the eighteenth edition of the Theater of Silence, in the city of Lajatico, a monumental twelve-meter-high steel sculpture titled Mariposa de la Vida [Butterfly of Life] was installed as a set design for the performance by the famous tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Atchugarry’s artistic production expanded in early 2024 with the Los soles de Atchugarry [The Suns of Atchugarry] limited edition jewelry series crafted in Valenza (Italy) from eighteenkarat gold, based on the artist’s design.

The artist lives and works between Lecco and Manantiales, where he is developing the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation and the International Sculpture Park project, as well as the exhibition areas intended to disseminate art. These different initiatives are visited every year by thousands of students.

As a child, Atchugarry learned to understand and love plants and animals, and in the course of this last decade he has been promoting a project for a wildlife and autochthonous flora nature reserve called Tierra Garzón in the town of the same name in Maldonado, where he has planted sixteen thousand native trees and plants that provide a natural redoubt for the local wildlife.

Atchugarry represents one of the most interesting and dynamic realities of sculpture in the world, and his work signifies identity, aesthetics, and timelessness at the same time.

Sus padres, María Cristina Bonomi y Pedro Atchugarry, grandes amantes del arte, pronto reconocieron el talento de su hijo y lo animaron desde la infancia a expresarse a través del dibujo y la pintura, una disciplina en la que el propio Pedro participaba a tiempo parcial, aunque con gran compromiso. En 1965, con solo 11 años, Pablo mostró por primera vez dos de sus cuadros en una exposición colectiva en Montevideo.

Comienza así una etapa de búsqueda en la que experimentó con diferentes materiales, como la arcilla, el cemento, el hierro y la madera. En 1971 creó su primera escultura en hormigón, titulada Caballo. Gradualmente se fue interesando por las posibilidades expresivas de estos materiales, la arena y el cemento, a los que en ocasiones añadió hierro y plomo.

Así nacen en 1974 las obras Escritura simbólica, Estructura cósmica, Metamorfosis prehistórica, Maternidad y Metamorfosis femenina, en las que a la profunda y particular estética que hoy lo caracteriza se suma una capacidad expresiva tan hermosa como desgarradora.

En 1972, Atchugarry realizó su primera exposición individual de dibujos y pinturas en el Centro de Exposiciones SUBTE de Montevideo, a la que siguieron varias muestras entre 1974 y 1976: en la galería Lirolay de Buenos Aires, en el XV Salón Internacional Paris-Sud, en Porto Alegre, en São Paulo, en Brasilia y, finalmente, en Río de Janeiro, donde conoció al extraordinario Iberê Camargo. En 1977 comenzó a viajar por Europa y visitó Bélgica, Dinamarca, Francia, Alemania, Países Bajos, España, Suiza e Italia.

En 1978 realizó su primera exposición individual de pintura en la galería Visconti de Lecco (Italia). Ese mismo año expuso también en las galerías La Nuova Sfera (Milán) y La Colonna (Como), donde presentó una serie de dibujos en tinta china y acuarela.

Con motivo de esta muestra, Mario Radice escribió un artículo para el periódico La Provincia de Como con un expresivo titular: «En La Colonna, excelentes tintas chinas del escultor y pintor uruguayo Atchugarry». En 1979, este uruguayo de corazón italiano logró materializar un sueño: realizar su primera exposición individual en París, en la Maison de l’Amérique Latine. Posteriormente, también expuso en la ciudad suiza de Coira y en Estocolmo. Durante su estancia en París creó el dibujo preparatorio de La Lumière [La luz], su primera escultura en mármol, y pronto se trasladó a Carrara para realizarla.

El encuentro con el mármol y las canteras lo deslumbró para siempre y le hizo descubrir el material que lo acompañaría durante toda su vida. La mejor forma de entender esta relación mística, bella y primitiva, es recurrir a las palabras del propio Atchugarry: «Fue como encontrar el verdadero amor». A partir de ese año, regresó a Carrara en innumerables ocasiones para elegir personalmente los grandes bloques de mármol en los que tallaría sus obras. Atchugarry sostiene que sus esculturas nacen a través de un diálogo directo con la materia, con esos bloques a los que llama, siguiendo la concepción panteísta con la que se siente innatamente identificado, «los hijos de la montaña».

En 1982 decide establecerse en la ciudad italiana de Lecco. Tras una larga estancia en Carrara, encuentra en la cantera del Polvaccio el bloque de doce toneladas en el que esculpiría la Pietà [Piedad], una pieza profundamente personal y heterodoxamente religiosa que deja traslucir su admiración por Miguel Ángel. Esta obra, que el artista terminó en 1983, tiene hoy su propia capilla laica en el Parque Internacional de Esculturas de la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry de Manantiales, en un bello paraje situado entre el campo y las orillas del mar en el departamento de Maldonado, en Uruguay.

En el año 1987 sus obras se exponen en la cripta de Bramantino de la basílica de San Nazaro in Brolo, en Milán, con un texto de presentación de Raffaelle De Grada. A partir de 1989, Atchugarry comienza a crear obras monumentales que actualmente forman parte de colecciones públicas y privadas por todo el mundo. En 1996, un año en el que también incursionó en otros materiales, como la madera de olivo, el bronce y el mármol rosa de Portugal, realizó Semilla de la esperanza, una obra destinada al Parque de las Esculturas del Palacio de Gobierno de Montevideo. En 1997 expuso en Caracas, donde conoció a Jesús Soto y otros prestigiosos artistas de gran sensibilidad.

En 1998, la Fundación Veranneman (Bélgica) organizó una exposición individual de sus esculturas acompañada por un ensayo del profesor Willem Elias.

El 25 de septiembre de 1999 se inauguró en Lecco el Museo Pablo Atchugarry, donde se exhiben de manera permanente un conjunto de obras representativas de su trayectoria

artística, desde las primeras pinturas hasta las esculturas más recientes, y se conserva el archivo de su trabajo. En 2001, la ciudad de Milán organizó una retrospectiva en la sede del Palazzo Isimbardi: Le infinite evoluzioni del marmo [Las infinitas evoluciones del mármol]. En el mismo año, Atchugarry creó para la ciudad de Manzano (Údine, Italia) una imponente escultura de mármol de seis metros de altura llamada Obelisco del Terzo Millennio [Obelisco del Tercer Milenio].

También en este año obtuvo el primer premio en el concurso nacional convocado para la realización de un monumento en homenaje a la civilización y a la cultura del trabajo, que se inauguró en Lecco en mayo de 2002.

En julio de 2002, la ciudad de Carrara le concede el Premio Michelangelo en reconocimiento a su carrera artística. A lo largo de este año Atchugarry trabajó en varios proyectos, entre los que destaca la escultura Ideales, destinada a la celebración del 50º aniversario de la coronación del Príncipe Rainiero de Mónaco, actualmente situada en la Avenue Princesse Grace de Montecarlo.

En 2003, Atchugarry representó a Uruguay en la 50ª Bienal de Venecia con la obra Soñando la paz, una instalación formada por ocho esculturas de mármol. En ese mismo año expuso por segunda vez en la Fundación Veranneman de Bélgica y creó la escultura Ascensión para la Fundación Fran Daurel de Barcelona.

En 2004, veinticinco años después de su última exposición en Uruguay, la galería Tejería Loppacher realizó una muestra individual de sus esculturas en Punta del Este. El año siguiente se inauguró también una exposición

individual de sus obras en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires.

En 2006 se celebró en el Museo Groeninge de Brujas una gran exposición retrospectiva con obras procedentes de colecciones privadas de todo el mundo.

Cuatro años más tarde, el museo adquirió la escultura Untitled [Sin título] (1999) para su propia colección. También en 2006, la Colección Berardo, de Portugal, adquirió Camino vital (1999), una escultura de casi cinco metros de altura destinada al Centro Cultural de Belém, en Lisboa.

En el año 2007 se inauguró la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry en Manantiales (Uruguay) con el objetivo de crear un lugar de encuentro para artistas de todas las disciplinas, un espacio de unión ideal entre naturaleza y arte que desarrolla una importante actividad cultural y en la que todos los recitales, exposiciones, talleres y conferencias son gratuitos y están abiertos al público, con especial atención a los niños de todas las edades.

Ese mismo año 2007, Atchugarry terminó su primera escultura de ocho metros de altura, Nel cammino della luce [En el camino de la luz].

Esta obra, realizada en un bloque de mármol de Carrara de 48 toneladas, se encuentra hoy en la colección Loris Fontana, en Italia.

También en 2007 se organizó una muestra itinerante de sus esculturas en distintas sedes de Brasil: el Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (Brasilia), el Museu Brasileiro da Escultura (MuBE, São Paulo) y el Museo Oscar Niemeyer (Curitiba). La exposición fue acompañada de un texto de Luca Massimo Barbero titulado Lo spazio plastico della luce [El espacio plástico de la luz].

En 2008, el Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, el más importante de Uruguay, le dedicó una muestra retrospectiva que reúnió los últimos quince años de su producción artística, un acontecimiento de singular importancia simbólica. En 2009 se inauguró en Punta del Este una obra monumental de mármol de Carrara de cinco metros de altura, Luz y energía de Punta del Este, con ocasión del centenario de esta famosa ciudad balnearia.

Después de siete años de intenso trabajo, Atchugarry finalizó en 2011 Cosmic Embrace [Abrazo cósmico], una escultura de más de ocho metros de altura realizada en un solo bloque de mármol de 56 toneladas. En noviembre del mismo año realizó su primera exposición individual en la galería Hollis Taggart, de Nueva York. En marzo de 2012, la Times Square Alliance seleccionó su obra Dreaming New York [Soñando Nueva York] para exponerla en Times Square durante la 18ª edición de la feria de arte The Armory Show. En el mes de julio de ese mismo año se instalaron dos esculturas de acero inoxidable en los jardines londinenses de St. James Square, en el marco del programa City of sculpture organizado por el Westminster City Council.

A finales de 2013, la editorial Electa de Milán publicó los dos primeros volúmenes del Catalogo Generale della scultura di Pablo Atchugarry, con curaduría del profesor Carlo Pirovano. El tercer volumen llegaró en 2019, una gran empresa y un logro extraordinario para un artista latinoamericano vivo. Ya en 2014, el Museu Brasileiro da Escultura de São Paulo alberga la mayor retrospectiva realizada hasta ahora de las obras

de Pablo Atchugarry, titulada A viagem pela materia [Un viaje por la materia].

Desde abril de 2015 hasta febrero de 2016 se celebró en los Mercados de Trajano– Museo de los Foros Imperiales de Roma la muestra Città eterna, eterni marmi [Ciudad eterna, eternos mármoles], una gran retrospectiva integrada por cuarenta obras.

En 2018 se inauguró en Miami la Pablo Atchugarry Foundation. Poco después, a comienzos de 2019, el Presidente de la República Italiana otorgó al artista el título honorifico de Oficial de la Orden de la Estrella de Italia por su labor como nexo cultural entre Italia y Uruguay.

Contini Art Gallery inauguró en Venecia, en mayo de 2019, una muestra individual titulada The Movement of Light [El movimiento de la luz]. Desde junio hasta septiembre de ese mismo año tuvo lugar la exposición individual The Evolution of a Dream [La evolución de un sueño], organizada en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de Pietrasanta (Italia) y formada por una selección de esculturas monumentales de mármol, bronce y acero que se pudieron admirar en la Piazza del Duomo y en la iglesia y el claustro de Sant’Agostino.

En julio de 2019, el Palazzo Ducale de Génova se convirtió en un escenario incomparable para la muestra Alla conquista della luce [A la conquista de la luz], acompañada de un ensayo de Luciano Caprile. En diciembre de ese mismo año, con el título Diálogo en blanco y negro, se realizó en Miami una exposición conjunta de Pablo Atchugarry y Louise Nevelson: un diálogo entre dos almas aparentemente distintas pero profundamente similares; la obra y el paso del tiempo son los

temas en torno a los cuales se estableció esta íntima conexión.

En diciembre de 2022, la ciudad de Lecco reconoció la labor de Pablo Atchugarry con el «San Nicolás de oro», una distinción reservada a los ciudadanos beneméritos. En marzo de 2023, el municipio de Maldonado (Uruguay) le concedió el título de «Ciudadano ilustre del departamento de Maldonado». En este mismo año se estrenaron dos documentales sobre su vida: Atchugarry monumental, dirigido por Alejandro Berger y Luis Ara, y Los hijos de la montaña, dirigido por Mercedes Sader.

Desde mayo hasta noviembre de 2023, el municipio de Lecco organizó una muestra antológica titulada Pablo Atchugarry. Una vida entre Lecco y el mundo, comisariada por el propio artista para celebrar sus 45 años de trabajo en Lecco. En julio de ese mismo año, con motivo de la 18ª edición del Teatro del Silencio, se instaló en la localidad toscana de Lajatico una monumental escultura de acero de 12 metros de altura titulada Mariposa de la vida que sirve como escenografía para la actuación del famoso tenor Andrea Bocelli.

La producción artística de Pablo Atchugarry se amplió a principios de 2024 con Los soles de Atchugarry, una serie de joyas de edición limitada fabricadas en Valenza (Italia), en oro de 18 quilates, según un diseño del artista.

En esta última década Pablo, que desde niño aprendió a conocer y amar las plantas y los animales, viene desarrollando un proyecto de preservación de la fauna y la flora autóctona llamado «Tierra Garzón», en la localidad del mismo nombre del departamento de

Maldonado, en Uruguay, donde ha plantado dieciséis mil árboles y plantas nativas que son refugio natural para la fauna local.

Pablo Atchugarry representa una de las realidades más interesantes y dinámicas de la escultura mundial, y su obra es al mismo tiempo identidad, estética y atemporalidad.

Gabriella Angeleti is an arts and culture writer and editor based between Brooklyn, NY and Rio de Janeiro. She was raised in Las Vegas and earned her M.A. from City University of London. She was a staff writer and editor for The Art Newspaper between 2015 and 2023 and is a regular contributor there and other international publications like The Financial Times, Elephant, Southwest Contemporary, and Artsy. Her writing focuses on South American art, Indigenous art, art in the American high desert, archeological and cultural heritage preservation, and the intersection of art and the environment.

Gabrielle Angeleti (n. Río de Janeiro, Brasil) es escritora y editora especializada en arte y cultura, con base entre Brooklyn y Río de Janeiro. Creció en Las Vegas y obtuvo una maestría en la City University of London.

Fue redactora y editora de The Art Newspaper entre 2015 y 2023, y colabora regularmente con ese y otros medios internacionales como The Financial Times, Elephant, Southwest Contemporary y Artsy. Su trabajo se centra en el arte sudamericano, el arte indígena, el arte del alto desierto estadounidense, la preservación del patrimonio arqueológico y cultural, y la intersección entre el arte y el medio ambiente.
