“ToxicMasculinity”isaphrasewehearveryofteninthepressandmediathese days It’sonethatsaddensmeasIamfortunateenoughtohavebeensurrounded bysomanyupstanding,inspiring,strongbutgentle,caringandintelligentmenwho havebeenverysupportiveandhavenothing“toxic”aboutthem Asaparentofa teenagesonmyself,it’sveryimportantformethathealsogrowsupembodyingthe values,attitudesandbehavioursthatwillmakehimashiningexampleofpositive andhealthymasculinity.It’swhateveryparentshouldwantandit’swhatIwantfor ourHollandHouseBoystoo.
However,I’mnotblinkered.
Liketoomanywomen,I’vealsohadmyrun-inswithmenwithwhobehavedinan absolutelyterriblemanner. Statistics ontheGovernmentwebsiteareshocking: Nationally,about1/3of16-18yearoldgirlsreportedunwantedsexualtouchingat school;22%ofyounggirlsaged7-12haveexperiencedjokesofasexualnaturefrom boys
Iwasthereforeinterestedtohear,atabrilliantISAconferencethisweekgivenby AndrewHampton, thatboysbehavingbadlytowardsgirlsisanchoredintheirfear ofhumiliationandtheirrelationshipswithotherboys,ratherthanwithwomen. Mr Hamptonbelievesthatthese“choicesinmasculinity”occursometimebetweenY5Y7andthatbyY8,thementalityisprettymuchfixed. AsaPrimaryHead,thisreally struckachordwithme,andIamnowresearchingwhatmorewecandoforour boystohelpthemunderstandthechoicestheyhaveabouttheirmasculinity.
