LOCATION

WHY WE LOVE MT RUAPEHU

Centred in the middle of the North Island, situated in a dual World Heritage National Park, half way between Wellington and Auckland, 4 hr drive each way. Mt Ruapehu is an active volcano, and has two ski resorts, Whakapapa (pronounced fukka-puppa) on the Northwest slopes, and Turoa, on the South-west slopes. These are the only ski resorts on the North Island and both are accessible with your Mt Ruapehu lift pass.

Ski on an active Volcano! Even if you don’t ski, you can take the scenic chair to the top and enjoy the stunning views over the North Island at one of New Zealand’s highest cafés!

TERRAIN Huge snow filled basins, steep chutes, drop offs and collectively boasting the largest terrain and highest lift in New Zealand. Whakapapa has 4 lifts, 3 T-bars & 3 carpet lifts, while Turoa has 5 lifts, 2 platters & 1 Sunkid Carpet Lift. Great for all levels of ability. Whakapapa is home to Happy Valley, New Zealand’s premier beginners’ area that sits in a stand alone valley, away from more experienced skiers and boarders.

GETTING THERE Whakapapa Village is the closest to Whakapapa Ski Area at just 10 mins drive but it is about an hours drive from Turoa Ski Area. National Park Village provides easy access to both ski areas, being 20 mins from Whakapapa and 45 mins from Turoa. Stay in Ohakune, to be closer to Turoa Ski Area. It’s just 20 mins away and only 45 minutes if you want to drive to Whakapapa. Both Ski Area access roads can be self-driven and are tar sealed, or catch a shuttle from your hotel for ease and comfort.
