Even if you try hard, your child may struggle with their academic performance at some point. There are a variety of strategies that you can use to help both of you cope.

Take a break If your child says, “I can’t do it,” and throws the pencil down, take a break. They may need to blow off a little steam, or they might just need to be angry and upset. Come back in five minutes; you can start fresh and allow the child to save face. This can help you get through the day without any further discussion.

Don’t always try to have a rational conversation Trying to have a rational conversation with your child when they get upset about school is not always the best idea. Instead, try to wait it out. This will allow you to talk it through without getting into a heated argument.

Let your child make mistakes Although it’s hard not to fix a child’s homework, most teachers will not let you do so unless the child asks for help. Teachers are more concerned with what the child has understood and not what the parent has been taught.

Don’t overextend the time spent on work Set a time limit on the amount of time that children can work on their homework. Most teachers won’t expect their younger students to work longer on homework than a half an hour. If your child is struggling, you can send a note to the teacher explaining that they were struggling, and this is what could be done.

Understand schoolwork isn’t conflict-free There is no such thing as a conflict-free homework strategy for most kids. They may find it fun, or they may just find that it’s something that they need to do. You have to help them figure out the structure of getting their work done.

Teach them how to organize themselves Although it’s a skill that can be taught, it can be hard to do so because it’s not always in your child’s nature. One of the most challenging factors in teaching children how to organize themselves is if they don’t have the necessary skills in their own right.

Before your kids leave for school, create a list of must-do items, such as putting their math books in their backpacks. You can also schedule a weekly clean-out with your children to help keep their desks and backpacks free of papers.
