2019–2020 Report of Appreciation

DEAR FRIENDS of Holderness

I

began the new year with an exciting announcement—that I will be retiring in June 2022! I often say that I have the best job in secondary school education because I work for a remarkable community of colleagues, alumni, students and their families, and our board of trustees. We have accomplished so much together, but perhaps nothing has made me as proud as watching the generosity of the Holderness community on display during a year dominated by the ongoing pandemic and its economic fallout, conversations around racial injustice, and a divisive election. This outpouring of support ref lected our mission “to work for the betterment of humankind and God’s creation” at a time when that charge was needed most. The school remains deeply committed to its founding principle—“to combine the highest degree of excellence in instruction and care-taking with the lowest possible charge for tuition and board”— and in this report you will read about some of the ways in which our community has ensured that the school remains financially accessible to all. This commitment is most evident through a sound endowment strategy that provides sustained financial resources during difficult times and through scholarships and financial aid awards that allow students to enjoy the full Holderness experience, regardless of their families’ economic background. It has always been the people that make Holderness an exceptional school, and I take comfort

knowing this commitment will carry the school’s current momentum long into the future. n With my deepest appreciation,

Phil Peck

W

hen I assumed my role as board chair, it was with the knowledge that I would have the incredible honor of standing by Phil’s side as he announced his retirement. Holderness is in an excellent place due to his leadership as demonstrated by the recent addition of the Davis Center and upgrades to our snow sports facilities, in the way he and Robin open their home for weekly brownie nights, to his support of the Job Program, to strapping on a pair of snowshoes to join students and faculty on Out Back. Every decision, every conversation begins with a deliberate effort to impart the traits of fairness, initiative, dependability, and empathy that define leadership at Holderness. Holderness is also in an excellent place thanks to you. The care and generosity of so many alumni, families, employees, and friends is inspiring, and the following stories and pages of donor and volunteer names speak to just how special this community is and why I too am honored to give back to a place that has shared so much with my family. n Sincerely,

Nell Reynolds P ’18 ’20 ’22 Chair, Board of Trustees

ENDOWMENT 101 What is an endowment, and why is it important?

T

his fall, we asked that exact question to Holderness School’s financial stewards, a high-powered group led by Chief Financial Officer Walter Schaeffler and trustees Bob Cunha P ’16 ’19 and Andrew Sawyer ’79 P ’18 ’20 ’21. Their answers were illuminating, and served as a powerful reminder that charitable giving is a critical component to the school’s financial health—both for today’s students, and for generations of students to come.

something more than that so that the market value of the endowment at least increases with inf lation, so that its real spending power stays the same or grows.” $60,000,000

$41,000,000

DECEMBER 2020

Here’s what they had to say.

WHAT’S AN ENDOWMENT? Put simply, an endowment is a collection of funds that earn interest; a portion of that interest is then used to pay for specific purposes every year. The Holderness endowment is comprised of 118 separate funds, 59 of which pay for student scholarships. The remaining funds are devoted to a wide variety of school-related expenses, including teacher salaries, sabbaticals, student programs, and building maintenance, to name just a few. Many of the endowment’s 118 funds, which were set up by the school’s benefactors, have very specific rules governing how the money is spent.

BY THE NUMBERS As of December 2020, the Holderness endowment was at a record market valuation of just over $60 million. That’s up from $41 million at the end of 2010. The endowment pays for 10 to 11 percent of Holderness’s annual operating budget, but the school only spends a small portion of its endowment each year. “We spend about 4 percent of the endowment’s market value annually,” says CFO Walter Schaeff ler. “We try to earn

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? A school’s endowment is important, in part, because it lends durability to the school’s finances amid economic volatility. “In an extreme crisis the endowment, combined with low debt levels, ensures liquidity and sustainability,” says Sawyer, who serves as chair of the Investment and Audit Committees and sits on the Finance Committee. “That said, even during the 2008–2009 financial crisis and the most recent pandemic-driven financial crisis, the board has not needed to invade the endowment for emergency resources.” And the larger and more stable a school’s endowment is, the less it needs to rely on tuition to cover its expenses. “The bigger the endowment, the more money we can draw,” says Cunha, board treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee. “And

2019–2020 Report of Appreciation

the more money we can draw from the endowment, the less we have to rely on tuition to pay the bills.”

FINANCIAL AID ENGINE Perhaps the most significant role of a school’s endowment is its contribution to financial aid. At Holderness, roughly $1 million of the $4 million the school spends annually on financial aid comes from the endowment. And while 40 percent of Holderness students currently receive some form of financial aid, that number lags behind schools with larger endowments. Looked at on a per-student basis, Holderness has $200,000 of endowment for each student. That’s significantly less than the $600,000 to $700,000 needed to allow a school to be fully needblind. “That means we have to charge a higher tuition than we would like,” Cunha says. “And it means we don’t have as much money for financial aid, and won’t be able to attract qualified middle-class and workingclass students who may choose to attend a different school because they receive more financial aid there.”

THE FUTURE In the fall of 2019, the Board of Trustees met to discuss how to increase access to more students, regardless of financial need. With an eye toward the future, the board discussed a number of steps it could take—such as growing the school’s endowment to match those of peer schools. “If we want to ensure that Holderness is accessible to a diverse range of middle-class and working-class families, we need more financial aid,” Cunha says. “Holderness was founded as a school for students ‘of modest means,’ and we must continue to fulfill that mission.” How can Holderness close the gap and provide more financial aid to more students? “I’m a big believer in funding endowment scholarships. When donors fund a scholarship, they are helping students forever,” Cunha says. “That money will always be there to help defray the tuition costs for students of modest means.” By working together to grow the endowment through smart investing—and increasing the number of endowed scholarships available—financial professionals like Cunha, Sawyer, and Schaeff ler are ensuring

the school’s long-term financial health. They’re also ensuring that a Holderness education will be accessible to more students in the generations to come, regardless of their ability to pay. n

The van Otterloo, Henderson, and Brewer

FACULTY CHAIR YEAR PROGRAM N

ot many high school teachers are able to take a yearlong sabbatical to pursue their professional and intellectual interests. Yet that’s exactly the kind of opportunity Holderness School gives to one lucky teacher every year, thanks to The van Otterloo, Henderson, and Brewer Faculty Chair Year Program. Now in its 25th year, the Chair Year was the brainchild of former Head of School Pete Woodward, who wanted a program to support the school’s tireless faculty. In the early 1990’s, Woodward asked then-Dean of Faculty Phil Peck to lead a committee of faculty and trustees to reimagine the school’s sabbatical program, which was halted in the 1980’s as a cost saving measure. In 1995, two school trustees and members of that committee, Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo P ’94, generously endowed the Chair Year.

The new Chair Year program was designed to benefit both faculty and the school itself—an improvement over the school’s former, less-structured sabbatical program. To qualify for the new program, faculty were required to submit an application describing how they would use their year away from school to pursue intellectual or professional interests. “We didn’t believe in a year off but wanted the teachers to do something that they could bring back to their classrooms,” says Rose-Marie van Otterloo. “It was an instant success, and many teachers finished their graduate studies and were newly invigorated to take up teaching again after one year.” In the quarter-century since the Chair Year program was established, numerous Holderness faculty have used the program to pursue advanced degrees or travel the country to learn from other schools and fellow educators. During the inaugural Chair Year in 1995, then-Music Director David Lockwood left campus to earn his Master’s degree in a program run jointly by the Berklee School of Music and the Boston Conservatory. This year’s Chair Year recipient, Director of College Counseling Bruce Barton, plans to visit some of the most competitive colleges and universities that Holderness students apply to, and will explore international student admission and gap year opportunities. Bruce, currently enjoying the second Chair Year of his career, says the program is an invaluable opportunity to learn and recharge. “The Chair Year program is life sustaining for longterm faculty the way water is to a thirsty plant,” Bruce says. “This is round two for me, and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting time to ref lect and advance myself

2019–2020 Report of Appreciation

in the area of spirituality and college counseling. While I look forward to returning to campus, I am cherishing every day this Chair Year affords.” Talk to any past Chair Year recipient, and it’s clear the program is universally cherished. But it’s also a huge boon to the school, which sees the program as a way to retain talented faculty and keep new ideas f lowing onto campus. During the 2018-19 school year, for example, Science Department Chair Randy Houseman spent his Chair Year pursuing a Master’s of Science in science education from Montana State University. He was also able to use the time to visit family in Texas and Arizona and spent the fall in Lake Placid, NY, so he and his wife Meredith could watch their children’s soccer and field hockey games at nearby Saint Lawrence University. Randy says his Chair Year gave him the time and space he needed to grow as an educator. “The Chair Year allows you to fully immerse yourself in learning and allows you the time and energy to ref lect on the learning process,” Randy says. “This in turn makes you a better and more empathetic teacher.” The benefits of a Chair Year extend well beyond the classroom. Just last year, for example, Director of Athletics Rick Eccleston ’92 spent his Chair Year visiting forward-thinking athletic facilities across the country. His travels took him to places as far afield as the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Center of Excellence in Park City, UT, and Mesa, AZ, where he watched Chicago Cubs President Jed Hoyer ’92 guide his team through spring training. The best practices he learned about training, nutrition, coach development, and athletic facilities will inform Holderness’s upcoming athletics campaign, which will revitalize athletics programs and facilities across campus. “The ability to push the vision for the future of Holderness Athletics is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Rick says. “Even though I re-entered the Holderness world this fall in the midst of a pandemic, I felt rested and charged to take on any and all challenges.” For most Holderness faculty, those challenges are never in short supply. The demands of being a teacher, coach, and dorm parent are ever-present, but a teacher’s involvement in their students’ lives

Rick Eccleston ’92 visits with Chicago Cubs President Jed Hoyer ’92 during his Chair Year.

is what makes Holderness so special. “The faculty set the examples and the students learn from them,” Rose-Marie van Otterloo says. “The fact that they live with the students in the different dorms, I think, makes many students feel as if they were at home.” But every so often, hardworking teachers and dorm parents need to step back, learn, and recharge. That’s why the van Otterloos helped to establish the Chair Year program—to give faculty the time and space to develop and grow, both personally and professionally. “Not a lot of schools have a program like this,” Rick says. “If five years from now someone asked me for advice, I would tell them to make sure to do something that will fill your tank professionally but also make sure you do something to fill your tank personally and get the most out of the time. It was just a tremendous gift. I can’t express that more.” n

Holderness School Peter Barnum and his dog, Barley.

BARNUM AND BARLEY Admissions and Advancement icon Peter Barnum retires after 40 years at Holderness

I

f Peter Barnum had a spirit animal, it would probably be a yellow lab.

During his 25 years as Holderness School’s director of admissions, Peter would show up to work most days with one of his scruffy yellow labs by his side. His first lab, Willy, was such a creature of habit that on the days Peter was away on business, Willy would pad over from his nearby home, through the woods, to the admissions office. “Carolyn Henderson, who I worked with early on, would take care of him during the day and then when she left to go home she would put Willy in the car and drive him home and pass him off to my wife, Joanie,” Peter says with a chuckle. “I think he literally thought he had to be here.”

6

That workaholic canine quickly became a fixture in the admissions office, and his joyful, bumbling presence— and that of subsequent dogs—calmed generations of prospective students. “They’d walk in the door and see a knuckleheaded lab lying on the f loor and just feel the pressure either dissipate or disappear,” Peter says. We’re sitting in Peter’s office on a golden October afternoon, talking about his upcoming retirement this June. As Peter reminisces about his 40 years at Holderness, another yellow lab, Barley, sits by his side. The spirited puppy has been a fixture on campus this fall, livening up the Advancement office where Peter has worked since 2005 as senior associate director for major gifts. In a way, Barley and his furry predecessors

2019–2020 Report of Appreciation

“FOR ME, IT WAS MUCH MORE ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIPS AND GETTING TO KNOW PEOPLE...” have come to embody the laid-back, down-to-earth Holderness values Peter embraced when he became associate director of admissions in 1980. Mentored by school icons like Don Henderson, Bill Clough, and Pete Woodward, Peter came to see Holderness as a humble place that didn’t take itself too seriously, and where students could find an ideal balance between academics, athletics, and the arts. It’s the kind of place where a kid could be challenged and nurtured at the same time, says Peter, who watched his own children thrive at the school. “I always felt Holderness was good at allowing kids to learn and grow but still be a kid,” Peter says. “Maybe not all the time but certainly often enough, and I felt good about that.” Since moving to the Advancement office in 2005, Peter has worked day in and day out to make the Holderness experience accessible to as many students as possible. Having spent a quarter century as the school’s director of admissions and director of financial aid, Peter knows just how critical the financial aid piece can be for students and their families. “Being director of financial aid was the only part of the job I didn’t like because it brought me as close to being depressed or having a migraine headache than anything else I did during my time here,” Peter says. “Every year there were kids that we would have loved to have had on campus where we would accept them and offer them a spot, and then deny financial aid. That was brutal.” On the other hand, Peter saw just how transformative financial aid could be—not just for the students who received it, but for the school itself. “A good number of the kids we’ve had the common sense to make financial aid awards to have added so damn much to this place,” Peter says.

There’s no doubt that Peter’s efforts in the Advancement office made Holderness a more financially accessible place to more students. Indeed, major gifts and other forms of philanthropy have become an integral part of the school’s financial health. While tuition covers just 75 percent of the yearly costs to run the school and summer programming covers five percent, philanthropy makes up the remaining 20% of the operating budget. And financial aid has become more important than ever. Today, Peter says, approximately 40 percent of students receive some form of financial aid—up from 25 percent when he first came to Holderness in 1980. That growth in financial aid is made possible in large part through major gifts to the school, which often fund critical student scholarships. Peter has played a key role in arranging those gifts, mainly by nurturing the close relationships he’s formed with Holderness alumni, parents, and friends over the last 40 years. But he’s not pushy about it. “I was told that every time I went out on the road there should be a financial ask or a financial conversation that takes place, and I’ve never adhered to that—it just wasn’t who I am,” Peter says. “For me, it was much more about the relationships and getting to know people, and when the time was right having a conversation about their financial support.” Although Peter will retire in June, he’ll maintain the close relationships he’s formed while at Holderness. You’ll still likely see him at reunion and other functions, and he’ll be happy to lend a hand if the Advancement office asks. But he’s ready to try other things, too —like gardening, playing poker with his buddies, volunteering with kids, and working on his admittedly poor golf game. He’s ready to try something new. “There was a time when I was concerned about what I would do when I retired, but I’m no longer concerned,” Peter says, as Barley paws at his office door, eager to get outside. “I know that I can walk away from this place at some point and feel good about it. It will be tough, but I know I can do it, and that’s a good feeling.” n

Holderness School

THE DAVID P. GOODWIN FUND S

ince its founding, Holderness has instilled in its students a sense of responsibility for their community, of leadership through serving others. David P. Goodwin ’37 took this to heart and dedicated himself to supporting the residents of his hometown of Manchester, New Hampshire.

David P. Goodwin ’37 (right) with his wife, Dorothy (left) and their children.

After his passing in 2011, David’s family celebrated his lifetime of service by establishing The David P. Goodwin Fund for Student Support. The fund provides non-tuition financial assistance to deserving Holderness students. We believe that it is vital to keep the school financially accessible to all families, and the Goodwin Fund gives all students, regardless of their economic background, the opportunity to share in the same Holderness experience. Every year the fund provides support for clothing, health, and basic amenities; books, laptops,

8

and academic supplies; family travel and lodging; participation in athletic teams and competitions; and vacation programming and experiences. Service to others has been an important tradition passed from one generation of Goodwins to the next. As a teenager, David joined his grandfather in the family business, Goodwin Funeral Home, and cared for Manchester families for 50 years before retiring in 1986, selling the business to his son, Charlie, who became the fourth generation to lead the company. David was active in many organizations in the Manchester community. He served as a trustee of the Cogswell Benevolent Trust for almost 40 years, volunteered for more than 70 years for the American Red Cross, and was a 65-year member and a past president of the Manchester Rotary Club. He also supported the Manchester Boys and Girls Club; Easterseals of New Hampshire, where he served as chairman of the board; Neighborworks Greater Manchester; the United Way; and the New Hampshire Lung Association. Neighborworks Greater Manchester, dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty through home ownership and quality affordable rental housing, presented him with the “Outstanding Neighbor Award”; the Manchester Boys and Girls Club honored him with a “Hall of Fame Award”; and Easterseals of New Hampshire named the “David P. Goodwin Lifetime Commitment Award” in his honor. David and his wife, Dorothy, were recognized by the Heritage (now Granite) United Way with their highest award, the William S. Green Lifetime Achievement Award, and by the William J. Moore Center, which serves individuals with developmental and intellectual

At his memorial service, the pastor of the First Congregational Church in Manchester spoke to not only David’s connection with people but how he connected people to each other. David’s life is a reminder of how one individual can make a difference in the lives of so many others, and the fund bearing his name enables Holderness to enroll the brightest and most talented students, from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, and aids our efforts to create a diverse and outstanding school body. It is a fitting legacy to an alumnus who spent his life giving back to his community. n

disabilities and acquired brain disorders. In 2008, Easter Seals named their boardroom the David P. and Dorothy M. Goodwin Board Room in recognition of their commitment to Easter Seals. David was a former Deacon and trustee of the First Congregational Church in Manchester, a Mason and Shriner, and his wife of more than 60 years, Dot, served on the board of Elliot Hospital for 30 years. David was also a loyal Holderness alumnus, serving as both a Class Correspondent and a member of the Board of Trustees from 1976 to 1985. His advocacy on the school’s behalf as a trustee of the Cogswell Benevolent Trust resulted in gifts supporting the construction and renovation of the Hagerman Center, Weld Dining Hall, Carpenter Arts Center, Alfond Library, Livermore Hall and Health Center, Connell Dormitory, the addition of the Chapel organ, fitness equipment, and the school’s endowment. Holderness recognized his achievements with both the Distinguished Service Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

LEAVING A LEGACY: Cushman ’59 and Pam Andrews Support Scholarships

C

ushman Andrews ’59 grew up in Norway, Maine, which is about 45 miles Northwest of Portland. It is in the foothills of the White Mountains. Norway was once known as the snowshoe capital of the world and the original home of Tubbs Snowshoe Company. Cush’s parents recognized that going away for high school could provide important lessons in responsibility and independence. His father was a close friend of Claude Allen, the Headmaster of nearby Hebron Academy, and Claude recommended that Cush attend Holderness School. Headmaster Don Hagerman was a friend of Claude’s from their Deerfield Academy days together. At Holderness, Cush managed football and played basketball and baseball. He was on the staff of the Dial (yearbook) and Bull. He served as a f loor leader and a member of the Student Council, as well as a member of the Acolytes. Cush says, “The depth of commitment of the faculty, like Don Henderson, Dante Fiore, Edward Cayley and Loys Wiles, for each individual student was truly inspiring!”

Cushman Andrews ’59 and his wife, Pam.

10

Cush was a year late in graduating due to a bad bout with pneumonia. He attended Colby College for two years, in his home state, but unfortunately it did not turn out to be a good fit for him. His father informed him that he was now on his own to complete his education. Don Hagerman suggested that Cush come back to Holderness to coach and to be a dorm parent to a

2019–2020 Report of Appreciation

small group of students in upper Livermore. Don also recommended that Cush take classes at Plymouth State College, now Plymouth State University. It was during this period that Cush developed a close relationship with Don Henderson. He worked alongside Don every day and assisted him with the ski team. “I admired his unbelievable work ethic and commitment to the ski team and to his students,” recalls Cush. To this day, he and his wife, Pam, have remained close to Don’s widow, Pat. When they speak with one another, they share book recommendations. Cush also became close with Holderness teachers Joe Wennik and Bruce Haertl. Later, Cush moved to Boston to complete his degree at Boston University, working multiple jobs at night to pay for school. He earned his Charter, Property, Casualty Underwriters designation in Insurance and completed the Advanced Management Program from Harvard. While at BU, Cush reconnected with his now-wife, Pam, who is also from the Norway/Paris area of Maine. Cush went on to have a long and successful career at Marsh and McLennan, Inc., a worldwide insurance firm, and lived in Richmond, Indianapolis and Detroit. He and Pam later settled in the Chicago area, where Cush was responsible for Chicago and the Central Region of Marsh and McLennan’s US operations. Cush and Pam have been active members of their community wherever they have lived. He has served as a Trustee of the Chicago Zoological Society, a worldrenowned center for Conservation and Education Programs. He is now a Life Trustee. Pam still serves on the Women’s Board of the Chicago Zoological Society and The League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The couple enjoys spending time at their summer home, on Lake Pennesseewassee, in Norway, Maine. Cush has also served as a Class Agent for more than 10 years, as well as a Reunion planning volunteer for Holderness. He cites Headmaster Emeritus Pete Woodward for his reconnection to Holderness. Peter Barnum, over the years, has continued to foster the relationship with the school.

CUSH AND PAM SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPS BECAUSE THEY “HELP TO ATTRACT THE BEST STUDENTS AND SUPPORT THE SCHOOL’S NEED FOR DIVERSITY.” Cush is a member of the Balch Legacy Society and has given to Holderness for over 50 years. During a dinner with classmates Chris Palmer, Jerry Ashworth, Steve Barndollar, Hugh Barndollar and their wives, there was an in-depth conversation about why giving to Holderness is so important. "This dinner was the catalyst that inspired us to take our support to the next level," Cush says. Cush and Pam support scholarships because they “help to attract the best students and support the school’s need for diversity.” Approximately 40 percent of Holderness students receive financial aid, a number that is expected to increase steadily in the future. Scholarships make the Holderness experience accessible to students from families of all income levels. This helps the school build a dynamic and diverse community of learners, now and into the future. Holderness is grateful to Cush and Pam for their leadership and enduring generosity, which will support Holderness students for generations to come. n

DANIEL DO ’13

GETS IT DONE Holderness alum beats cancer, goes to Harvard Medical School

L

ittle more than a month after he graduated from Holderness School in the spring of 2013, Daniel Do began to feel a nagging pain in his leg. Daniel, who had plans to try out for the Bowdoin College basketball team that fall, first thought it was a muscle pull. Soon after arriving at Bowdoin, however, the pain had become so debilitating that he couldn’t walk. Daniel, a beneficiary of the Richard R. Hall P ’61 Scholarship Fund while at Holderness, would soon receive devastating news. A visit to a doctor and a subsequent x-ray revealed a shadow on his femur; a follow-up MRI clearly showed a tumor. What followed was a nerve-wracking few weeks during which Daniel’s doctors tried to nail down a diagnosis. At first, his doctors thought he had a sarcoma, or an aggressive form of leukemia. “I remember going on this whole odyssey,” Daniel remembers. “It was only two or three weeks, but for a cancer patient every day is horrible.”

Daniel Do ’13 at Harvard Medical School.

12

Finally, on October 4, 2013, doctors diagnosed Daniel with lymphoma, a serious but treatable cancer that required three months of chemotherapy followed by a month of radiation treatments. It was a tough time for Daniel, who had to leave Bowdoin to receive treatment at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Luckily, though, he wasn’t alone. Soon after learning of Daniel’s diagnosis, the Holderness community rushed into action: students sent him a care package filled with letters; teachers and staff reached out to him; and the school quickly launched a fundraising drive to help offset the cost of his medical care and related

2019–2020 Report of Appreciation

expenses. It was exactly the kind of support Daniel needed at the time. “All of my friends and mentors were still at Holderness,” Daniels says. “I was just really grateful that even though I had left the school, the teachers, staff, and my good friends still thought of me, cared about me, and reached out to me.” Today, Daniel is cancer free and thriving. He eventually graduated from Bowdoin College in 2018 and spent two years working in a zebrafish cancer lab at Mass General Hospital. Inspired by the world-class treatment he received as a patient at Dana Farber, Daniel resolved to pursue medicine; this fall, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he enrolled as a student at Harvard Medical School. His ultimate goal is to become a hematologist. “I would love to treat my own cancer,” Daniel says. “My dream is to come back to Dana Farber as an oncologist.” Having survived cancer and been admitted to one of the most competitive medical schools in the country, Daniel knows just how fortunate he is. A first-generation American whose parents immigrated from Vietnam in the 1980s, Daniel says he never would have had the resources to pay for his Holderness education without the Richard R. Hall P ’61 Scholarship Fund. Without that scholarship and the opportunity it afforded, his life may have traveled along a very different path. “Most of my peers in medical school are well off. You don’t see a lot of students like myself—first generation, low income—in medicine,” Daniel says. “The whole idea is, how do we get more students of my background into medicine?” For Daniel, the answer is clear: educational

opportunity. Thanks to his Holderness scholarship, Daniel enjoyed a first-rate high school education that taught him how to succeed in the classroom and in life. He says it was at Holderness where he first learned to ask questions in class, go to office hours, and balance the competing demands of schoolwork, academics, and community. “A Holderness value that I carry with me today is balance—being more than just a student, but also being an athlete, being a community member, and being a friend,” Daniel says. “I guess to be a more complete human being—that’s really important.” Talking to Daniel, it’s clear that he’s passionate about expanding educational access to deserving students like him. It’s an idea he discussed during his entrance interview to Harvard Medical School, and it’s an idea he hopes more people with means will embrace. By making a donation to an institution like Holderness, Daniel says, a donor can make a huge difference in a student’s life. “By giving money to Holderness and potentially creating a scholarship for students like myself, you’re giving them an opportunity to make something out of themselves,” Daniel says. “When hard work meets opportunity, something can happen, which is why I’m here today. And that opportunity starts with education.” n

T

he Class of 1982 Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 with gifts from members of the Class of ’82, as well as from parents, grandparents, and friends. Peter Coolidge ’82 and Miles Glascock ’82 P ’19 have been the driving forces behind the scholarship fund. Their families have supported the effort as well including Miles’ mother Elizabeth Glascock, who served as a school trustee from 1984 to 1993, and Peter’s grandfather, Albert H. Gordon, who contributed generously to the fund. From the beginning, Peter and Miles believed that the scholarship would benefit not only the individual students receiving aid but also the school as a whole. In a December 1987 letter finalizing the creation of the scholarship with school officials, they wrote, “Diversity is the one thing that Holderness must stress if it is going to continue to compete to be the best school it can be.” Peter ran cross country and track, was a Nordic skier, and won the Walter Alvin Frost Award, the Latin and Math Prizes, and the Harvard Book Prize. He was a house leader, the founder of the Investment Club, a member of Dial and Blue Key, and a Lifer. Peter attended Harvard College and

Peter and his wife Carrie were married by former Headmaster The Rev. Brinton W. Woodward Jr. in the Chapel of the Holy Cross at Holderness in 1998. He served as a trustee from 1992 to 2001 as well as a class agent, career mentor, reunion volunteer, and phonathon volunteer. He is currently a trustee of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which preserves and operates Monticello, the third president’s plantation home, in Charlottesville, VA, and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. “What I remember most about Holderness is the people,” recalls Peter. “The students, faculty, and staff and the Headmaster are the reason my time at Holderness was so special.” “Holderness is much the same now as it was when I attended—a very special place where values are instilled by example from the Headmaster, faculty, and staff,” he adds. At Holderness Miles played soccer, hockey, and lacrosse, was a house leader, head of Blue Key, photo editor of the Dial, co-captain of the Polar Bear Club, a member of the Investment Club, and a Lifer. He graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in finance and is currently a Senior Advisor in JLL’s Healthcare Practice Group, a commercial real estate services company, in Miami, Florida. He has served as a Class Agent and Reunion volunteer. “It is an honor for me to continue to help and support the school which provided me and my son, Spencer, with an unparalleled high school education and life experience,” says Miles. n

WE DRINK FROM WELLS OTHERS DUG: Revisiting the Foundations of the Balch Legacy Society THE BALCH LEGACY SOCIETY honors individuals and families who support Holderness School through a planned gift, such as a bequest, retirement account, charitable remainder trust, or gift annuity. Balch Legacy Society members like Cush ’59 and Pam Andrews provide educational opportunities for future generations of students and inspire generosity in others. Making a planned gift earns donors membership in the Balch Legacy Society, named for the family that donated Livermore Mansion and the surrounding land that became the home of Holderness School. For more information on the mutual benefits of supporting Holderness and your family through life income gifts and bequests, please visit www.holderness. planmygift.org or contact Advisor to The Balch Legacy Society Tim Scott at (603)662-6287 or tscott@holderness.org.

W

hen the Rev. Lewis P.W. Balch, Jr. passed away in 1875, it was the careful and quiet work of his will that brought a lasting afterlife to his desires. Rev. Balch and his widow, Emily, donated much of their estate to help Bishop W.W. Niles establish Holderness School on the Livermore Estate overlooking Plymouth. It has long been this level of prescient philanthropy that has helped the school grow and prosper even though trying times.

From its earliest days, just about every aspect of Holderness was designed as Balch and Niles envisioned, bringing out the fullest possibility in each student, both in the classroom and out of doors. The school of the future will continue to capitalize on its location and physical resources to be both unique among top rated New England boarding schools while also staying true to its core mission of service to all humankind. Today, the Balch Legacy Society exists to ensure that the school we know and love will continue to be the best it can be, especially during the inevitability of changing and challenging times. For many who know and love the school, supporting it since we graduated has been a natural way of both giving back and paying it forward. While our time on campus was short, over nearly 150 years the school has graduated thousands of young people each supported by a deeply devoted faculty, many of whom have remained loyal for their entire careers. I am beyond thrilled to have joined the school’s advancement staff in the role of steward and keeper of the Balch Legacy Society f lame. My years at Holderness were pivotal, as I know they were for many of you, and together we can help the school thrive long after we have moved on. In effect, together we are digging wells for students we will never know. As our legacy, that’s a good feeling indeed. n Tim Scott ’73 Advisor to The Balch Legacy Society
