Our experience with HOK was very positive. From programming of the project through design and construction, HOK involved the faculty and staff and designed a unique facility on a tight budget and schedule. We had to release the initial design, so we turned to HOK who restarted the schematic design process and developed a plan that worked. Their design and construction plan met our budget and re-invigorated faculty and staff for more detailed planning and future use of a beautiful and functional facility. L. carleton university Ottawa, Ontario, Canada HOK’s challenge inherent in this project for one of Canada’s finest academic institutions was not only to find a way to adapt and reuse an existing facility that had not been significantly updated since its original construction in 1964, but also to provide this new facility in time for the following academic year.

truman state university Kirksville, Missouri HOK utilized a highly interactive process involving administration, faculty, staff and students to program and design an addition and complete, phased renovation for Magruder Hall, the existing Science Building at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. The Science Department offers under­graduate study in Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

georgia institute of technology Atlanta, Georgia This project will convert research labs and offices on the first floor of the Gilbert H. Boggs Chemistry Building, at Georgia Tech, into undergraduate instructional labs for Biology, Physics and Neuroscience. This renovation, and the recently completed undergraduate chemistry labs on the second floor, will make Boggs a central location and “Science Hub” for sophomore, junior and senior science labs and provide a significant improvement in the quality of space and pedagogical approach from “theoretical inquiry based labs to hands-on project based labs” for undergraduate science instruction. Spaces for student collaboration are designed to create a student centric environment.

stanford university school of medicine Palo Alto, California

HOK provided design services for the complete renovation of this 75,000 sq. ft. facility to house new, high-performance biomedical research labs. Using our innovative Researcher Profiling tool, we created a flexible lab model that combines wet and dry biomedical and bioengineering bench space with bioinformatics in a home base lab approximately twice the size of the previous models for the park.

missouri western state university St. Joseph, Missouri In an effort to create a “Science Gateway� for the University, Missouri Western State University updated their existing Science and Math Complex. Renovations and additions to the 40-year-old complex have allowed for the provision of 21st-century teaching labs and classrooms. HOK was selected to lead the school through an interactive programming and design process, based on the initiatives of Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL). The project included the addition of more than 66,000 square feet and renovation of the existing 60,000 squarefoot building.

william paterson university Wayne, New Jersey HOK programmed and designed a renovation and addition to WPU’s Science Facility. The design solution encompassed a building addition, modernization of existing labs, classrooms, assembly spaces, administrative offices and core facilities. Now a state-of-theart science teaching and research facility, it serves the Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Ecology, Physiology, Psychology, Anthropology, Math and Computer Science departments.

Our team programmed and designed the nearly 16,000 sq. ft. expansion to include laboratories, offices and meeting spaces to be shared among the multiple start-up companies on the third floor of the CORTEX 1 Lab and Office Building (designed by HOK in 2006) which provided a solution that tripled the size of their existing Accelerator Lab facilities.

@4240 St. Louis, Missouri This facility is the third major building in the CORTEX district and houses state-of-the-art research laboratories and supporting amenities to fit a variety of tenant needs. The building supports flexible wet and dry laboratories, offices and a shared Common area with conference facilities and a cafĂŠ. Large floor plates and flexible MEP design allow for the facility to support a variety of tenants.

bioBAT inc. Brooklyn, New York HOK repurposed a 500,000 sq. ft. section of Cass Gilbert’s historic Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) converting nine stories of warehouse to support affordable laboratory and light manufacturing needs. Facilities are designed and implemented on an incremental basis with 60,000 sq. ft. of space ready and the remainder prepared for future laboratory.

national oceanic and atmospheric administration (noaa) Pearl Harbor, Hawaii HOK provided visioning, programming and design services for a significant adaptive reuse of two historic hangars, and new construction linking the two hangars to provide 310,000 square feet of space for a diverse range of functions including: research labs, the national data center, national weather service, and a range of administrative functions.

medical college of wisconsin Wauwatosa, Wisconsin HOK provided services to renovate existing space at the Medical College of Wisconsin. An update of gross anatomy facilities, as well lecture halls; allowed for the incorporation of technology applications, outlets for laptops, seating accommodations for team-based learning and opportunities for interactive learning.

confidential global life sciences company Gaithersburg, Maryland An animal health division of a multinational biotech company hired HOK to provide design services for a renovation to 28,700 sq. feet in what was formerly a vivarium space. The renovated facility supports the development of enzymes for chicken feed in upgraded and expanded space. The facility is approximately 40% laboratory space, 10% product fermentation suite and 50% office space.

united states department of justice Confidential Location HOK provided architectural services for an interior fit-out /renovation of 50,000 sq. ft. of forensics lab and office space within two structures. Following a needs assessment focused on evidence storage and transportation, HOK designed the space for high-throughput operations until their new facility is complete. The resulting efficient design contributed to the user’s ability to double their original output goal in the first year.

george washington university Washington, DC HOK designed this renovation of a 50,000 sq. ft. existing historic building for George Washington University. The design will focus on accommodating program space for the Department of Physics and general use classrooms. The goal of the project is to create spaces that are conducive to a collaborative and intellectual environment, while meeting the user’s needs and providing flexibility for growth.

confidential global life sciences company Cambridge, Massachusetts This new space for a large, multinational pharmaceutical company was developed as part of an initiative to promote innovation and discovery in this client’s medical devices group. The new facility places a special emphasis on flexibility and adaptability. It includes Lab Space for testing and validation, a multidisciplinary Workspace, a Fabrication Lab and a Social Hub that facilitates collaboration.

acell inc. Columbia, Maryland

HOK provided design services for an expansion of 14,500 sq. feet of manufacturing space to support ACell’s skin graft manufacturing processes. The facility includes approximately 7,000 sq. ft. of ISO grade 7 and 8 spaces for GMP manufacturing. Future facilities and expansions in additional US and European locations are planned to support production of similar medical devices.

genzyme corporation Tampa, Florida Utilizing the third floor space of an existing speculative office building, HOK designed lab and office space to support Genzyme’s 24-7 genetic disease testing services for hospitals and research centers. Significant sustainable design strategies included daylighting, variable air flow fume hoods, energy star appliances and lab equipment where available, and a heat recovery system.

california institute of technology Pasadena, California HOK programmed, designed and developed centralized, multi-user laboratories for research in nanostructure synthesis, fabrication and characterization through the renovation of the basement of an existing building. The facility also incorporates a virtual conferencing facility, office space and collaborative interaction space.
