Wishard Eskenazi Hospital is a public medical center and a teaching hospital for the Indiana University School of Medicine, currently located on a 39-acre site bordering the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Campus. For more than 150 years, Wishard Eskenazi Hospital has provided Indianapolisarea residents with the highest quality healthcare with a special emphasis on the vulnerable populations of Marion County, Indiana.

HOK has been the Executive Landscape Architect for the conceptual master plan as well as the Landscape Architect for the development of the public realm and parking areas for the new Wishard Eskenazi Hospital campus. The overarching design strategy for the site promotes wellness and community health while providing opportunities for interpretation and education. The project vision is to build a holistic environment of respect for ecology and focus site strategies on healing for all: visitors, patients, staff, citizens and students.

The public realm framework employs a BMP approach to stormwater management, utilizing native and adapted plantings for rain gardens and bio-filtration swales. The naturalistic character and aesthetic of these stormwater features extends to the campus streetscape and a variety of garden rooms located throughout the campus, providing filtration, diversity and sustainability benefits to the overall landscape.

The project is seeking a Gold level of LEED certification.

Sustainable site features include: removal of 80% TSS, infiltration basins, control of storm water runoff, use of native and adaptive species plantings, rainwater collection for irrigation, green roofs, edible community gardens, carpool parking spaces, alternative fuel vehicle parking spaces, bike parking, efficient exterior lighting design, and use of locally manufactured and produced materials.
