Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in the Clinic, School, and Family

Assessment and Intervention

2022 360 pages R$ 135.00 / approx. € 26.50 ISBN 978-65-89092-20-9

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood and adolescence. It is characterized by persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors that are serious to the point of interfering with social, academic or professional functioning of individuals with the disorder, in addition to compromising their quality.

ADHD presents significant variability in terms of its etiology and important associations with brain changes, cognitive deficits, social, academic and occupational impairments re sulting from inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Therefore, adopting an interdisciplinary approach to assess ment and intervention of the disorder is essential. Multi disciplinary teams involving psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists and pedagogues, among other professionals in the field of health and education, should work together with the families of people with ADHD, in addition to getting to know their specific symptoms and expressions, and thus reduce their impact and facilitate their adaptation process to school contexts and relatives.

Psychotherapy for Children

2018 272 pages € 21.00 ISBN 978-88-98542-36-9

Cognitive behavioral therapy has been seen overcoming its own dogmatic approach of the first generation to evolve and give more emphasis to the therapist-patient relationship. The focus went beyond the “solution” to specific problems and treatment of symptoms, to employ change strategies where the context, the experience, and the therapist-patient relationship take on a great importance. The author makes this new approach clear and simplifies complex operations, behind which there is a solid and advanced epistemological construct.

Psychopathological Assessment and Documentation System for Children and Adolescents (CASCAP-2)

2022 approx. 219 pages approx. € 29.95

ISBN 978-3-8017-3199-1

The Psychopathological Assessment and Documentation System for Children and Adolescents (CASCAP-2) is designed to assess the most important features of mental disorders in childhood and adolescence. It can be used to clinically assess over 100 psychopathological characteristics. The assessment is made on the basis of a clinical exploration of the child or adolescent and the accompanying caregiver(s), as well as on the basis of the diagnostician’s own observations.

CASCAP-2 consists of three components: the findings sheet, the glossary and the exploration guide. In the glossary, the in dividual characteristics are defined, examples of strong symptom expression are given, and characteristics to be de lineated are listed. The exploration guide contains sample questions while clinical assessments are documented on the findings sheet, which is available separately.

CASCAP-2 supplements categorical diagnostics with a phe nomenological description of mental disorders in children and adolescents at the level of individual symptoms. The instru ment, which is designed for practical use, can be integrated very easily into routine clinical procedures.

The Autistic Mind

Scientific Research Answers to the Conundrum of Autism

2nd edition 2021 xvi + 200 pages

€ 20.00

ISBN 978-88-98542-59-8

In the last decade, research on autism has accelerated dra matically: since 2010, the year the first edition of this book was published, more scientific studies on autism have been published than in all previous decades combined. To illus trate the extent of this acceleration: the studies on autism on which the first version of “The Autistic Mind” was based now account for less than one-tenth of the scientific litera ture on the subject.

The second edition of this book provides the reader with a detailed analysis of the most important research in the field of autism in recent years. It is completely revised, expanded, and updated in light of the scientific and cultural advances that have been made in the last decade. It covers the major lines of inquiry in research on the autistic mind and illustrates the data, hypotheses, advances, and the many challenges that autism continues to present to science and society.

When Great Achievements Lead to Great Self-doubt

The Impostor Self-image and its Effects

2019 104 pages € 19.95

ISBN 978-3-456-85772-5

They are successful high performers and to the outsider they appear to be capable, qualified, and skilled. Nevertheless, de spite obvious evidence of their actual capacities, some of them fear that they will not be able to repeat their successes. They tend to attribute career success not to personal exper tise but to excessive effort or uncontrollable factors such as luck. People with the impostor self-image or “imposter syndrome” are convinced that they are not as intelligent and capable as they appear to others and that they have arrived in their positions undeservedly. They thus experience them selves as “frauds” or “impostors” and fear that sooner or later they will be exposed as such.

This book examines the characteristics of the impostor self-image, how it can be identified, how widespread it is, how it develops, its links with other personality traits, and its effects. Finally, the question of countering the impostor self-image is explored, along with how people can arrive at a realistic assessment of their own skills, counter self-doubt, and achieve greater psychological well-being.

Meeting Emotional Needs in Intellectual Disability

The Developmental Approach

2022 194 pages

€ 39.95

ISBN 978-0-88937-589-5

Help people with intellectual disabilities improve their mental health and quality of life

• Introduces a new emotional development, evidence-based model

• Details phases and milestones of development for people with ID

• Explains challenging behavior and mental health problems according to the model

• Detailed guidance on how to apply the approach in practice

• Full of case examples

The book explores in detail how challenging behavior and mental health difficulties in people with ID arise when their basic emotional needs are not being met by those in the en vironment. Using individually tailored interventions, which complement existing models of care, practitioners can help to facilitate maturational processes and reduce behavior that is challenging to others. As a result, the “fit” of a person within his or her individual environment can be improved.

Case examples throughout the book illuminate how this approach works by targeting interventions towards the person’s stage of emotional development.

Textbook of Sports Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

Mental Health and Illness in Competitive Sports

2022 696 pages € 89.95

ISBN 978-3-456-86001-5

Mental problems and illnesses are no less common in com petitive sports than in the rest of the population, yet it is rarer for competitive athletes to turn to psychiatrists and psycho therapists. The barriers are still too high, their own fear of failure remains too great, and their discipline and learned patterns are too strong for them to appreciate their own needs. Trainers and mental trainers are able to see problems at an early stage but are often stuck in conflicting roles (per formance optimization and sporting interests). Athletes fre quently approach their mentors and sports physicians only when the mental difficulties become quantifiably perfor mance-inhibiting, and after that, there should ideally be close cooperation with a sports psychiatrist or sports psy chotherapist. It is also often forgotten that the prevention and promotion of mental health in competitive sports are at least as important as diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care and that they require equivalent specialist medical knowledge and corresponding expertise.

How to Build and Promote Social Competence

2021 VII + 162 pages

€ 24.95

ISBN 978-3-8017-2933-2

Every person depends on communication with other people in everyday life. There is hardly any area of life that is not codetermined by interaction with others. The ability to shape relationships positively in the long term while achieving individual goals plays a central role in human well-being. Accordingly, the promotion of social competence plays an important role in many psychotherapeutic contexts.

This book provides information on scientifically established interventions as well as innovative concepts for building social competence. A practice-oriented guide primarily addresses the special therapeutic challenges that arise in the individual therapy setting for an interactive procedure such as social skills training: e.g., the practical implementation of role-play ing and the difficulties that arise due to the dual role of “ther apist - role-playing partner.” In addition, group therapy inter ventions are also described and numerous working materials are presented to support the implementation of the proce dure in clinical practice.

Behavioral Activation

2021 137 pages € 24.95

ISBN 978-3-8017-2984-4

Behavioral activation are classical behavioral therapy methods that aim at increasing the occurrence of behaviors that have a reinforcing effect in everyday life. They often provide the starting point for further steps in therapy and for successful treatment. The goal is to enable patients to motivate themselves performing everyday actions inde pendent of current moods and thus to learn a form of emo tion regulation.

In the field of depression treatment, behavioral activation is one of the standards of psychotherapy. Mood-lifting and stabilizing effects of reinforcing activities can counter typi cal depressive symptoms, such as withdrawal, passivity, and decreased drive. The book describes the method of behavio ral activation, informs about its mode of action, and explains its concrete implementation in clinical practice.

Diagnosis of Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Multiaxial Trauma Model of Dissociation according to ICD-11

2nd edition 2022 328 pages € 59.95

ISBN 978-3-456-86227-9

People with complex post-traumatic stress disorder often find themselves in a pattern of loss of control, helplessness, and dependency. A therapy that focuses on individual symptoms such as depression or a “simple” post-traumatic stress disor der often does not do them justice. Even more so when the wrong diagnosis is made due to false assumptions or a lack of information.

What all must be ensured for the diagnosis to be made: is there a threat of intrafamilial or external violence? Is existen tial stability guaranteed during therapy? Are there investiga tions of legal proceedings in the background? With brilliantly structured overviews, this book helps even experienced diag nosticians to keep track of the variety of diagnostic options to be considered or ruled out and not to overlook anything.

Chronically depressed patients are often considered difficult to treat because the illness is often closely related to severe traumatic experiences. This manual focuses on traumatized, chronically depressed patients: it outlines both the disorder as well as its diagnostic approach and explains the basic assump tions of the psychoanalytic understanding of depression.

It explains the basic treatment steps in long-term psychoana lytic treatment of chronically depressed, early traumatized patients, and addresses specific challenges such as suicidal ity, aggression, and guilt. Basic therapeutic approaches and treatment principles are illustrated through specific case ex amples. The effectiveness of this manual has been demon strated in a study of long-term therapies for chronic depres sion (the so-called LAC Depression Study).

Schema therapy is an important further development of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for patients with person ality disorders and other chronic mental health problems. In studies, work with the schema mode approach in particular has been shown to be highly effective. In the updated edition of this book, which in particular also reports current find ings on the evidence, treatment with the mode model is presented in a practical manner. Numerous case examples illus trate the therapeutic approach. After an introduction to the core concepts of schema therapy, diagnostic and case conceptualization are addressed. Sub sequently, the therapeutic procedure for each mode type is explained. Important emphasis is placed on the therapeutic relationship, which is conceptualized as a limited reparenting, and emotionfocusing techniques, such as chair dia logues and imaginative techniques. In these two respects, schema therapy dif fers particularly from classical CBT. Typ ical pitfalls and problems in schema therapy as well as possible variations of the approach are also described. Thus, the book offers a compact presentation of work with the schema approach to personality disorders.

Imagery rescripting is an experiential technique for the reduction of negative feelings, which are presumably related to biographical experiences. Based on the current problematic feeling, mem ory images are processed in such a way that the associated negative feelings are replaced by desired feelings. Thus, trauma-associated memory images, such as flashbacks, which are associ ated with memories of physical or sex ual abuse and which occur for example in post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorders, can be processed. It can also help treat negative emotions such as shame, an ger, guilt, or fear, which are presumably related to previous experiences.

The long-term retention of top performers is of great economic relevance for companies. Unwanted staff turnover generates high costs in companies and is often accompanied by losses in terms of quality, customer satisfaction and productivity. In addition, it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit good specialists and managers on the labor market.

Based on the current state of research, this book describes guidelines for the systematic analysis of reasons for staff turn over and provides practical recommendations for how to retain top performers (e.g., conducting retention interviews, design ing attractive career paths). It also explains how classic HR tools, such as employee surveys or team meetings, can help prevent unwanted turnover. The topics presented range from the initial training, through discussions to clarify expectations, to exit interviews and typical problems encountered when im plementing turnover management. Special emphasis is placed on the question of what both immediate superiors (e.g. team leaders) and those responsible for personnel and organiza tional development as well as the management can do to prevent unwanted staff turnover. Case studies from various industries (e.g. production, retail, care) round off this book.

A Guilty Conscience –Nuisance or Asset?

Neurobiological Basics and Practical Remedies

2021 136 pages € 19.95

A guilty conscience can be a real nui sance. There is simply no rest and you can’t just turn it off through rational thought. Psychologically, in psychother apy, advising and coaching, a guilty con science is one of the most persistent and difficult symptoms to pin down.

Maja Storch and Gerhard Roth ask the questions: why feelings of guilt are so prolonged and how to deal with them.

Gerhard Roth explains which compo nents of the human brain, over the course of its development, give rise to a phenomenon as complex as a guilty conscience. Using three practical and easily understandable examples, Maja Storch presents a system for everyday use which can be used to get to the root of your own guilty conscience and to develop a plan for dealing with it.

Evolution and Health

How Do Lifestyle and Diet Influence Medicine and Our Health?

2022 304 pages € 29.95

ISBN 978-3-456-86110-4

Recent centuries have brought about profound changes in human society, medicine and health in many parts of the world. On the one hand, the human environment is changing increasingly quickly because of people themselves. This can lead to improvements in health but also to challenges. On the other hand, the role of natural selection is now declining due to modern medicine, prevention and specific health support. Resulting microevolutionary changes in human physiology and morphology are becoming quantifiable, and individual differences within a population are be coming increasingly visible.

This book describes the complex inter action between evolutionary, genetic and epigenetic aspects, human behav ior, the environment and the emergence of illnesses. It provides the foundation for new approaches to an individually shaped, healthy lifestyle as well as for future public health actions.

Making diagnoses is a core duty of doc tors. Medical research provides the ba sis for this with clinical guidelines and recommendations for action. Yet in everyday life there are also many often contradictory perspectives: norms among colleagues, patient expecta tions, economic incentives, astonish ing traditions and medical experience that can include profound wisdom but also misguidance and fallacy.

This book shows clearly that, in addition to medical findings, ethnology, philoso phy, psychology and medical history can help with understanding everyday life. It shows that their findings are relevant to action in practice and hospitals.

This textbook links relevant theoretical concepts with specific examples of health technology and current findings from nursing and therapeutic practice in an interdisciplinary and application oriented manner. The authors deal critically and constructively with the concept of user orientation in therapy and nursing.

As a user and recipient, the human being is at the center of all technologies and therapies, be it as a patient, relative, nurse, or therapist; every new techno logical development and application must meet their diverse and heteroge neous requirements, needs, and ex pectations. The Anatomy of Time –Self-Management for Doctors A Guide to Effectively Prepare Time Slots

2021 152 pages € 29.95

ISBN 978-3-456-86148-7

Doctors find themselves caught be tween the growing demands of having to learn more and more plus physical and mental stress, and the needs of a fulfill ing private life. Previously, there was no self-help guide focused on how to effec tively improve the well-being of physi cians (and patients).

Over the course of their careers, physi cians often lose momentum, become exhausted and subsequently lack meaning in their life. This can even cul minate in burnout. To prevent this, it is important to continually refocus, adapt ing your goals to circumstances. With this in mind, time management for phy sicians becomes more than just normal planning.

The book therefore interprets self-man agement for physicians as a holistic model. It provides a timetable for organ izing professional responsibilities as well as encouraging breaks and self-re flection. It is important to take a broad perspective and to consider, and plan for, the whole panorama of life in order to love the job and to thrive in every way.

2022 120 pages

€ 34.95

ISBN 978-3-456-86165-4

Medicine for the relief of pain has made little progress in the last 50 years. 16% of our population claim to suffer from chronic pain, for which no lasting help can be found, despite years of treat ment by different doctors.

Trigger point therapy experts have inte grated myofascial techniques into their everyday therapy in recent decades and through this they have achieved good results even with complex and chronic problems. In this book, instructors from the Interest Group for Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy (IMTT) in Switzerland

present 33 complex cases of patients with chronic pain, whose pain they were able to relieve permanently with manual trigger point therapy and dry needling.

Using these case studies, double-page spreads with an educational, uniform layout clearly present the diagnosis, pathophysiology and chronification of myofascial pain syndromes and, in conclusion, describe encouraging and surprising successes despite previous therapy resistance.

Using Yoga for Prevention and Therapy

Reference Book with Breathing, Movement, and Concentration Exercises

2019 264 pages € 34.95

ISBN 978-3-456-85893-7

This textbook provides access to new knowledge and practical proficiency by linking information from recent studies of yoga to practical insights. The book also describes scientific studies and research that show how these practices work. The practice of yoga is of clear benefit for the mainte nance of good health and to support the treatment and rehabilitation of somatic and mental illnesses.

The author argues that yoga empowers people: from day to day, from childhood to old age, and especially in times of crisis and sickness. One Foot Already in Heaven

Phantom Perceptions –On the Trail of a Mysterious Phenomenon

2021 312 pages € 24.95 ISBN 978-3-456-86013-8

People with intellectual disabilities are significantly more likely to suffer from mental and physical disorders than the general population. For this very reason, good health-pro moting and medical care is especially important. The more pronounced a cognitive impairment appears, the more chal lenging the diagnostic and treatment approaches are in the provision of care. Communication difficulties with patients and specialist staff make the necessary examinations and treatments more difficult and can result in critical situations that are avoidable. If patients can be provided with explana tions that are in line with their capabilities, then the level of anxiety and stress is reduced for all concerned. The treat ment success rate increases.

This large-format book includes materials that explain about illnesses, examination and treatment methods in language that is easy to understand. The materials can help medical, treatment and educational personnel with their everyday work. They promote dialogue with relatives and people with learning difficulties, contribute to informed decision-making and strengthen patient rights.

Around 50 to 80% of amputee patients have sensation in the area of their amputated limb. The missing limb can give the distressing feeling of pain or of being trapped in a twisted position. Sometimes patients have the sensation of itching, tingling, or twitching or they even try to hold or pick things up.

But what exactly is happening in the brain in response to the sudden loss of sensory information, and how do these changes result in phantoms? As a pain therapist, the author has many years of experience in caring for patients with phantom sensations, and he has recorded the sometimes bi zarre but also touching sensations of his patients. Based on real patient stories, he offers the reader a clear and enter taining introduction to the fascinating world of neurophysio logical phantom phenomena and the emergence of pain. He provides gripping insights into the brain’s ability to reorganize and the unusual effects of this on patients. With simple experiments to try at home, we discover the questionable reactions of our consciousness and body sensations.

Fundamentals of Internal Medicine

Understanding Correlations and Interpreting Findings

2020 424 pages € 59.95

ISBN 978-456-85924-8

In the interdisciplinary treatment of complex abdominal illnesses, internistic co-management of the frequently occurring concomitant illnesses is essential. During their residency, medical students of visceral subjects often face internistic issues during their daily routine on the ward or during the night shift and have to react even if there is no internist on site.

This book divides the most important fundamentals of internal medicine into organ systems, thus offering the missing link between the highly specialized training in visceral surgery, hepatology and gastroenterology, and the internistic as pects of the daily routine on the ward.

Basal Stimulation in End-of-life Care

6th edition 2022 184 pages € 29.95

ISBN 978-3-456-86203-3

Meeting those who are dying often leaves people feeling helpless and lost for words. Nurses face the questions “What can we still do?” and “How can we provide adequate support for the dying on their final journey?” The authors answer these questions by transferring the concept of basal stimu lation to support for the dying and describe its possible ap plications in palliative care and hospice work. They docu ment the differences between end-of-life care in hospices, hospitals and retirement homes. They describe how peoples’ experience, perception and bodily functions change during the dying process and what alleviates their symptoms. In so doing, they also demonstrate how nurses overcome hesitan cy and insecurity through touch and support and allow hands and gestures to talk when verbal language falls silent.

Altered Self-Perception in Dementia Patients – A Handbook for Caretakers

2nd edition 2018 144 pages € 19.95

People with dementia experience their condition as a big change in which, for example, new events are not linked to existing experiences and wishes, thoughts and actions can no longer be connected to each other. This kind of experience of the self, due to the inte grative function of the brain being tem porarily or permanently lost, is called dissociative self-experience. Based on this understanding of dementia, the author develops an approach to effec tively understand and support people with dementia in everyday activities.

Evidence-based Nursing and Caring

Methods and Ethics of Nursing Practice and Health Services Research

5th edition 2022 411 pages € 39.95

ISBN 978-3-456-86074-9

Evidence-based nursing and caring is a nursing practice that bases nursing decisions on the scientifically proven experience of third parties and the individual needs and experiences of those in need of care and their caregiv ers. It does this out of respect for the uniqueness of those in need of care and includes support and encouragement for them as well as care.

In their successful practice handbook, Behrens and Langer demonstrate how caregivers can acquire evidence-based knowledge and how they can evaluate, use and bring scientific findings into practical use. They describe ways and methods, including interpretativehermeneutic and statistical methods, and show how nursing decisions can be proven, justified and implemented in this way.
