MEN’S SOCCER
The Hofstra Women’s Soccer team won the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Championship Jenna Borresen and advanced to the NCAA Championship, where it faced Auburn in the opening round. The Pride finished with a record of 15-4-2 overall and Kelly Gerdes was undefeated in CAA play at 9-0, becoming the fifth team in CAA history to finish a conference Goals: Kristin Desmond (9) season unbeaten Assists: Monique Iannella (6) and untied. Anderson and Desmond also were named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region First Team while Gerdes earned a spot on the third team. In addition to his CAA Coach of the Year honor, Riddiough was also named the ECAC Coach of the Year.

The Pride Men’s Soccer team won six games overall in 2017 and compiled a 3-1-4 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. Hofstra was the fourth seed in the CAA Championship as the Pride qualified for the sixth time in the past seven years. Danny Elliott and Mani Walcott were named to Alex Ashton the All-CAA First Team while Luke Brown earned a spot on the third team, and George O’Malley was named to the CAA AllRookie Team.

The Hofstra Field Hockey team earned seven victories in 2017 with all seven of the wins at home. Freshmen Philine de Wolf and Frankie O’Brien were both recognized by the CAA, with each player earning a spot on the allrookie team.

The Hofstra Volleyball team posted an overall record of 18-14 and a 9-7 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association in Caylie Denham 2017. The Pride was the fifth seed at the 2017 CAA Championship and advanced to the semifinals. It marked Hofstra’s sixth consecutive CAA Championship appearance. WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
The Pride Men’s Cross Country team ran in five meets in 2017, including the first Dante Perez on-campus event in program history. Hofstra picked up three wins in the inaugural Hofstra Quad, defeating Wagner, Saint Peter’s, and St. Francis Brooklyn. Alan Hetherington, who was Hofstra’s top Alan Hetherington finisher in every race, finished 11th at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship to earn All-CAA accolades. He helped the Pride to a fifth place-finish at the CAA Championship. Hetherington was also the recipient of the inaugural CAA Leadership and Sports Excellence Award in men’s cross country. Two runners excelled in offseason competition at the 2018 Penn Relays as Alex Masai won the College Championship in the 5K Time: Alan Hetherington men’s 5,000-meter (16:27.1, Hofstra Quad) run while Meshack 8K Time: Alan Hetherington Kipchirchir placed (25:50.4, Princeton fifth in the men’s Invitational) 10,000-meter run. 10K Time: Alan Hetherington (34:48, NCAA Regional)

The Pride Men’s Basketball team posted a record of 19-12 overall and 12-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association in 201718. Hofstra finished third in the CAA led by Conference Player of the Year and Associated Press Honorable Mention AllAmerican Justin WrightDesure Buie Foreman. In addition, Wright-Foreman was the ECAC Player of the Year, a First Team All-CAA, National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 10, and AllMet selection. Rokas Gustys was a Second Team All-NABC District Justin 10 and All-Met pick Wright-Foreman while also collecting All-CAA Third Team accolades. Jalen Ray also received postseason recognition, Points: Justin Wrightas he was selected to the CAA Foreman (24.4) All-Rookie team. Hofstra picked up one of its biggest wins in recent history with a 69-66 victory over ACC opponent Wake Forest at the Lady Rebel Round-Up in Las Vegas. Head Coach Krista KilburnSteveskey notched her 200th career coaching victory on January 14 in the Pride’s win over Charleston.

SOFTBALL
The Hofstra Wrestling team posted a 10-10 dual-match record in 2017-18 and was 4-4 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. Michael Hughes qualified for the NCAA Championships with a second-place EIWA finish and earned All-America accolades after placing sixth in the 285-pound weight class. Two other Pride
The Hofstra Softball team captured the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association championship and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the 17th time in program history. The Pride, ranked 24th in the final NFCA Poll, finished the season with a record of 41-14 overall and 17-4 in the CAA. The Pride placed a league-high eight Brielle Pietrafesa players on All-CAA teams led by first team selection and CAA Pitcher of the Year Sarah Cornell. Michaela Transue and Sarah Edwards joined Cornell as first team all-conference picks. Kaitlyne Musa, Brittany Allocca, Nikki Michalowski, Brielle Pietrafesa, and Sophie Dandola were named to the second team, with Dandola also earning a spot on the all-rookie team. Hofstra also fared well Brittany Allocca in NFCA All-Region selections, tying for second in the country with seven selections. MEN’S LACROSSE The Hofstra Baseball team enjoyed its best season in several years, posting 23 victories and qualifying for the Colonial Athletic Association Championship for the first time since 2012 with a 12-12 record. John Rooney earned multiple All-America honors after a stellar season that also saw him claim CAA and ECAC Pitcher of the Year honors as well as being a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award. He was a third round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB Draft while Teddy Cillis was a 33rd round pick of the Kansas City Royals, marking the first time the Pride had two players selected in the draft. Other highlights from the year included the program’s

first-ever no-hitter, thrown by Seamus Brazill at Lamar on February 24, and a combined nohitter from Rooney and Brazill against Mount St. Mary’s on March 10. Rooney, Cillis and Vito Friscia each earned All-CAA First Team honors while Rooney (first team) and Friscia (second team) were American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region selections.

HOFSTRA ATHLETICS ACADEMIC SUCCESS Hofstra student-athletes had an average grade point average of 3.26 for the entire 2017-18 academic year. They had a 3.22 in the fall and a school-record 3.27 in the spring. The spring semester was the 12th consecutive semester that they have compiled at least a 3.0 GPA.

During the fall semester, 100 studentathletes earned either Dean’s or Provost’s List recognition. That number climbed to 116 in the spring. Hofstra Athletics also continues to excel in NCAA Academic Progress Rates. In the single year data covering the 2016-17 academic year, a University-record 13 Hofstra athletics programs (men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, men’s tennis, wrestling, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s lacrosse, softball, women’s tennis, and volleyball) recorded a perfect 1,000 score. It is the fourth straight year that at least 10 Pride teams had perfect single-year APR scores. As it relates to the multiyear APR, which encompasses the 2013-14 academic year through the 201617 academic year, six Hofstra teams (men’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s tennis, and volleyball) had perfect 1,000 scores. Among Colonial Athletic Association institutions, Hofstra had the second-most teams record a perfect 1,000 APR score. Q & A With
Rick Cole Jr.
Rick Cole Jr., former vice president of athletics administration at Iona College, was named director of athletics at Hofstra University on March 28, 2018, and began his duties on May 21. Cole has wide-ranging experiences in athletics administration, expertise in fundraising and marketing, and a fierce dedication to the success of student-athletes.
Prior to Iona, Cole served as vice president of athletics and athletic director at Dowling College, senior associate athletic director for external affairs at St. John’s University, and associate athletic director for external affairs and advancement at Stony Brook University. Cole earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in higher education from the University at Buffalo, where he played volleyball. He and his wife, Brooke, a former women’s basketball player at Buffalo and a former assistant basketball coach for the Pride, have three children – Taylor, Mackenzie, and Trey. Cole recently sat down with Director of Athletic Publications Len Skoros to introduce himself to the Hofstra community.

Q:
What attracted you to Hofstra University and the director of athletics position?
A:
Hofstra’s history matched with the future potential of Hofstra, along with the institutional brand and its greatness in the region. It really was a perfect fit for me and my family. The leadership of the University is committed to winning in academics and athletics. They are also committed to a program that has integrity and student-athlete welfare as the priorities.
Q: A:
Who are some of your mentors and why?
I have had the opportunity to learn from a lot of great people. I will start with Professor [William] Greiner, who was president at the University at Buffalo, because of his ability as a strong leader and an incredibly hard worker. He had a great broad-based vision for the institution yet was still able to reach people on an individual level. [Senior Associate Director of Athletics] Tom Koller was my first boss at Buffalo, and he taught me that you can work incredibly hard and be a great professional, but you need to find balance with your family and make them a priority. Dr. Richard Laskowski at Stony Brook University, Dr. Joseph E. Nyre of Iona, and Gloria Henn have been instrumental in my personal and professional development. I have also been lucky to have some great peer mentors such as my teammates at Buffalo. We had the benefit of learning from each other, both personally and professionally.
Q:
How have your past experiences prepared you for this job?
A:
I think higher education continues to be a challenging and ever-changing environment. Having the diversity of working at institutions that were similar but in some respects different from Hofstra will provide me with the experience to meet the goals of our program. I believe my experiences have helped me have the courage and expertise to elevate a program during an ever-changing culture in higher education and intercollegiate athletics. I have been fortunate to experience some incredible successes and some incredible challenges along my professional journey. I think that each phase of my career has helped prepare me for where I am today, and for the challenges and opportunities that we collectively will face.

Q:
What goals do you have for the Hofstra Athletics program?
A:
I think the goals are to evaluate where we are and to develop the road map of how we move forward as an institution and an intercollegiate athletics program. I want to build on Hofstra’s history of producing incredible studentathletes who are successful at more than just the sport they play. I also believe we can have regional and national success that will strengthen and raise the profile of the University. I don’t think these goals are accomplished in a vacuum or by the work of one person. I think success will happen because there is a clear vision that our staff, student-athletes, University leadership, alumni, fans, and supporters will get behind and work tirelessly to achieve. We will build a dynamic culture that is collective in its responsibility to our studentathletes’ success. Our goal will be to hold ourselves to the highest of expectations in academics and athletics.
Q:
You have children who are all involved in athletics and college sports – how has your professional insight helped shape their athletic journey?
A:
It certainly gives you a different perspective as you look through the lens of a parent. My wife and I both played sports in college and when you see the process of participation and the college recruitment/ selection process, it is a unique place to be as an athletic director and seeing that experience through your own children. I have three incredible children, who are also incredibly good people, and Brooke and I have reminded them to find the right fit for
them academically, athletically, socially, geographically, and culturally. We are thrilled that it appears all three have taken that advice and found institutions that are right for them. We are proud of the teammates they are and the people they are, and they are all pretty good at volleyball too!
Q:
What are your feelings on the partnership between athletics and academics at Hofstra?
A:
I feel that the primary objective of our studentathletes is to come to Hofstra for their overall growth – personally, academically, and athletically. Student-athlete success should drive our decision-making process. Our success measures are not just reflected on the scoreboard, they are also gauged by students’ success in preparation for life after Hofstra, the contributions they make to Hofstra and to their teammates while they are here, and the contributions they make following graduation. We will work with our faculty and staff to provide the vehicles for support as our student-athletes prioritize academic success.
Q:
What are your thoughts on the Long Island community and how important they are for the Hofstra community?
A:
I think Long Island and Hofstra are incredibly important to each other. We are one of two Division I institutions on Long Island, and I think we have to engage our community, not just through service to the community or to have the community’s support, but to have a true partnership. The relationship needs to be strong and symbiotic.
Q:
Is there anything else that you would like to say to the Hofstra community?
A:
We want to be an athletics program that truly makes a difference for our institution, for our community, and most of all, for our student-athletes. We have an incredible history at Hofstra and invite everyone to be part of our future success. We strive to be a model program that puts studentathlete success at the forefront of everything we do. We want our alumni and fans to be proud of the Pride. We welcome your support and guidance, and look forward to seeing you at as many athletic events as possible. Hard-Work and Help Led Hofstra Wrestler
Michael Hughes To Success
W
hen Hofstra heavyweight wrestler Michael Hughes stepped up to the All-American podium at the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Cleveland this past March, he was realizing a dream that was 17 years in the making. “My parents signed me up for the high school wrestling kid’s program when I was five or six,” Hughes said. “But growing up I played a bunch of sports. By high school it was just wrestling, football and track.”
As Hughes rolled towards a New York State championship as a senior wrestler at Smithtown West High School in Long Island, and a 109-9 career scholastic record, he had a decision to make: which sport to pursue in college. He’d never had a losing season in wrestling, and was an alldivision and all-county selection in football, too. “Even though I love team sports,” he said, “I also liked the aspect of winning or losing on my own in wrestling.”

was probably the biggest influence on me. Watching his work ethic and how much effort he put in at practice and pushing his body to be successful was something I didn’t know how to do yet. He was
Hughes is a gentle giant, and the transition from high school to college was not easy. “I was a shy person entering college,” Hughes said. “Once I am used to the environment, I become more outgoing. My freshman year I really didn’t talk much. I had to adapt to a whole new situation including competition, school schedule, practice and studying. It was definitely a big adjustment.” In fact, his rookie year was his only losing season at Hofstra (13-20), as an underweight heavyweight. “Freshman year was my first losing season,” Hughes said. “It was part of the big change and it was difficult mentally. I didn’t enjoy losing and I was questioning myself. I had to work my butt off to get back to where I was.” He credits Hofstra alumnus Luke Vaith with helping him turn things around. “My success has been a whole group effort and there is no way that I could ever repay all those for helping me,” Hughes said. “Luke
a really big help getting that mindset going.” And get going he did. He improved to 22-11 as a sophomore under new coach Dennis Papadatos. Hughes’ junior year saw him place third in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), earn an NCAA Championship bid at Madison Square Garden, and post a careerbest and NCAA-leading 41-10 record. After a 29-2 red-shirt season in 2016-17, Hughes knew that much was expected of him in his final campaign. He didn’t disappoint. With the EIWA Championships at Hofstra, Hughes became the first two-time NCAA heavyweight qualifier since Don Mayorga (1974-76). He was also Hofstra’s first heavyweight All-American
since Joel Kislin in 1973. Hughes finished the season with a 39-6 record. His 19 wins by fall earned him the NCAA Division I Award for Most Pins in 2017-18. Hughes, who served as Hofstra Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee President in 2017-18, graduated in May with a degree in physical education and health. “My two high school coaches (Jim Giugliano and Ken Leverich) are both physical education and health teachers and I always thought they were great role models,” he said. He expects to earn a master’s degree in health science in 2019. “My years at Hofstra were awesome,” Hughes said. “Having the student-athlete camaraderie and support system that Hofstra provides, really made for a tremendous experience. I look forward to completing my master’s degree while helping out the program next year.”

HOFSTRA ATHLETICS ATHLETIC FACILITY UPDATES The Hofstra University Department of Athletics continued to renovate, update and improve several of its athletic facilities in 2017-18.
James M. Shuart Stadium - FieldTurf Revolution 360 surface was installed by The LandTek Group, one of the nation’s leaders in the area of turf maintenance. David S. Mack Physical Education Center - The volleyball facility has received extensive upgrades. These comprehensive changes include dynamic graphics added to both the south and east walls recognizing the incredible career of former Head Coach Fran Kalafer, the outstanding history of the program, showcasing several outstanding alumni and promoting the Pride’s many conference championships and NCAA Tournament.appearances. In addition, the floor in the Mack Physical Education Center was completely redone with a new design. NCG Visuals completed the wall updates and Milburn Flooring took care of the court.
Bill Edwards Stadium - Changes have been made to the playing surface at the home of the Hofstra Softball program. The LandTek Group worked to improve the drainage at the facility and this was done via several changes to the infield playing surface and the transition from the infield to outfield. In addition, a batting cage was installed adjacent to the first-base side of the stadium. Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium - The entrance to the home of the Pride Field Hockey program was redone to include a larger concrete area and a brick walkway, where fans and alumni can support the program by purchasing a brick to adorn the stadium entrance. This project was completed with the assistance of the Hofstra Physical Plant Department, while North Shore Monuments produced the bricks.

Women’s Lacrosse Locker Room - The Hofstra Women’s Lacrosse program unveiled a new locker room branding project in the spring of 2018. This dynamic graphics addition to the locker room area was designed and installed by NCG Visuals of New York City.
Hofstra Bubble - Similar to Shuart Stadium, the indoor practice facility for Hofstra teams also received a new FieldTurf Classic HD surface. This was also done with the assistance of The LandTek Group.

NYCB LIVE
The Hofstra Men’s Basketball team played its first game at the newly renovated NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, on December 22, when the Pride faced top-ranked and eventual national champion Villanova, coached by former Hofstra Head Coach Jay Wright. The game was Hofstra’s second all-time versus a team ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll following a game at No. 1 Kansas to open the 2009 season.
NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S LACROSSE
QUARTERFINALS For the 10th time since 1997, Hofstra University hosted the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal doubleheader at James M. Shuart Stadium. The 2018 quarterfinals featured the third-seeded Yale Bulldogs against the sixth-seeded Loyola (MD) Greyhounds and the secondseeded Albany Great Danes versus the unseeded Denver Pioneers. Yale and Albany picked up wins to advance to the semifinals, and the Bulldogs would go on to win the championship at Gillette Stadium. Hofstra will continue as a host institution for the NCAA Quarterfinals in each of the next four years (2019-22).

This experience focuses on five key areas: academic achievement, athletic excellence, personal development, career development and commitment to service. The Office of Student-Athlete Services oversees this development program and strives to ensure that our student-athletes are prepared for life after college.
STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is made up of two representatives from each of our 17 Division I athletic teams. The members are selected annually by their coaches and/or peers to represent their respective teams on the committee.
Within SAAC, there is an Executive Board that is voted on by all members of the committee at the conclusion of the prior academic year. The Executive Board is responsible for setting all meeting agendas, as well as overseeing specific operations of SAAC including the Pride Cup competition, event coordination and community outreach.

The United States National Team, which featured four members of the Pride family, returned to the top of the mountain in the lacrosse world with a 9-8 win over Canada on a dramatic last-second goal in the title game of the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Men’s World Championships in Netanya, Israel.
Current Hofstra student-athlete Jimmy Yanes, who is entering his senior year, was a member of Team England, which placed fifth in the Championship. Yanes played in all eight games for England and tallied three goals and two assists with two ground balls. Hofstra alumnus Zach Pall ‘12, led the host Team Israel to a 5-2 record and a seventh-place finish in the 46-team Championship. Pall tallied a team-high 21 goals and added three assists and seven ground balls. Pall finished 22nd in points in the Championship with 24.
Hofstra Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney, who is entering his 13th season with the Pride in 2019, served as an assistant coach on the U.S. National Another Hofstra alumnus, Team along with Hofstra Chris Panos ‘96, was part of alumnus history as an assistant on and current the coaching staff for the Marquette Zach Pall National Team of Greece. Head Lacrosse Team Greece placed 19th Coach Joe with a 4-3 record in their debut appearance Amplo ‘01. Former Hofstra in the FIL World Head Men’s Lacrosse Championships. Coach John Danowski, who Panos is head coached the Pride from 1986 through 2006, was the coach at Queens University of U.S. National Team Head Charlotte. Coach. Kevin Unterstein ’08 was a midfielder on Team USA and played in all seven games for the undefeated world champions, recording one goal, two assists and 13 ground balls. In addition to Unterstein, the FIL World Championship title game saw another Pride alumnus on the field in Josh Byrne ‘17. Byrne, a former CAA Player of the Year and MLL Rookie of the Year in 2017, played in all seven games for Team Canada and recorded six goals and six assists with three ground balls.

NORTHWELL HEALTH The Northwell Health Orthopaedic Institute, part of New York State’s largest health system, will now coordinate and provide primary care along with orthopedic services for the more than 300 student-athletes at Hofstra. The agreement deepens the partnership between the two institutions, which includes the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies and Northwell’s STARS Rehabilitation partnership with the athletic program. STARS has provided physical therapy to Hofstra student-athletes for more than four years. In addition, the Maurice A.
STAFF NEWS Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney recorded his 100th career coaching victory at Hofstra on March 10, 2018, in the Pride’s 12-6 win over eighth-ranked North Carolina at James M. Shuart Stadium. Tierney is just the third Pride Men’s Lacrosse Coach to achieve that total, following the legendary Howard “Howdy” Myers (216) and John Danowski (192). Deputy Director of Athletics Jay Artinian was selected to serve on the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules Committee. The NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules Committee, which consists of members from NCAA Divisions I, II and III, continually reviews all playing rules, and recommends changes that aim to improve both game play and studentathlete safety.
Deane School of Law at Hofstra and Northwell recently announced a new agreement to provide free legal services for patients facing issues that contribute to poor health. Dr. Nicholas Sgaglione, medical director of the Orthopaedic Institute will lead the sports medicine team, which includes Russell Camhi, DO, who is the athletics health care administrator/ head team physician, along with Andrew Goodwillie, MD, Randy Cohn, MD, and Ashley Burlage, MD, as a team of orthopedists. Northwell’s STARS Rehabilitation has agreements with Hofstra, the NHL’s New York Islanders, New York Lizards Major League Lacrosse team and several area high school athletic programs.
Senior Sports Information Director Jim Sheehan was presented with the Doyle Smith Sports Information / Media Award by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) at the annual Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA)/USILA Nike Awards Luncheon on Friday, December 8, 2017. The 2018 Hofstra University Men’s Lacrosse Guide was named the best in the nation in the “Spring At-Large Guides” category of the College Sports Information Directors of America 2017-18 Publications and Digital Design Contest. The 112-page guide was written, edited and produced by Len Skoros and Jim Sheehan of
the Hofstra Office of Athletic Communications. Women’s Basketball Coach Kilburn-Steveskey recorded her 200th career victory on January 14, 2018, with a 65-60 win over Charleston, becoming the first coach in Pride history to reach the milestone. Graham Radcliffe, volunteer assistant coach of the Hofstra Men’s Soccer team, was inducted into the Island Trees High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was honored with the Island Trees Founders Award this spring. Radcliffe spent 20 years as the head boys’ varsity soccer coach at Island Trees, leading the team to five league championships and the 1997 Nassau County title.

Baseball No-Hitters
The Hofstra Baseball team recorded the first two nohitters in program history during the 2018 season. Seamus Brazill threw the first no-hitter in program history on February 24 in a 1-0 victory at Lamar (pictured). Two weeks later, on March 10, Brazill combined with starter John Rooney to no-hit Mount St. Mary’s in an 11-0 Pride win.

Ed Gaffney Inducted Into MAC Hall of Fame Ed Gaffney, a 1970 graduate who was a member of the Hofstra Men’s Soccer and Baseball teams, was inducted into the Middle Atlantic Conferences (MAC) Hall of Fame. Gaffney, Hofstra’s first soccer All-American and a member of the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame, was one of 16 members of the MAC Hall of Fame Class of 2018.

It was a banner year for Hofstra Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Shannon Smith, as she garnered a pair of Hall of Fame inductions in recognition of her incredible lacrosse career. In the fall she was inducted into the Northwestern Athletics Hall of Fame and she followed that up this past spring with an induction into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame.

Gustys Shines In NABC All-Star Game Her many Northwestern highlights included winning three NCAA titles, earning three first team All-American honors (2010, 2011, 2012) and capturing the 2011 Tewaaraton Trophy and lacrosse Honda Sport Award. Smith attended West Babylon High School where she was a six-time letterwinner and was a member of the varsity squad starting in seventh grade. One of the top scholastic lacrosse players to ever come out of Long Island, Smith had 729 points on 505 goals and 224 assists during her career.
Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame
Three Hofstra Lacrosse alums were inducted into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame this past December. Tom Gill ‘78, the longtime lacrosse coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Chris Unterstein ‘06, who ranks among the top 10 in career assists and points as well as single season points in school history, and Hofstra Women’s Lacrosse standout Kimberly Hillier ‘07, who ranks among the top five in school
Rokas Gustys had 10 points and a gamehigh 11 rebounds to help lead the West team to a 98-94 victory over the East in the Reese’s/National Association of Basketball Coaches College All-Star Game at the Alamodome this past March. Gustys was the lone player in the game in double figures in rebounds as his solid outing pushed the West to a fivepoint halftime advantage and they would go on to capture the four-point win. He was 4-9 from the field, 2-2 from the charity stripe and grabbed eight of his rebounds on the defensive end. He also had one assist in the game. It will be a busy weekend for Gustys as he also took part in the inaugural Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association team.
Boyd Inducted To Nassau County High School Hall of Fame
Hofstra Softball alumna Crystal Boyd ’94 was inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame this past September. Boyd hit .796 as a senior at East Meadow High School in 1990 and broke Long Island records with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs in just 19 games. She
then became one of the all-time greats in Hofstra Softball history, becoming the program’s first All-American in 1993 before earning the distinction for a second time the following season. She helped the Pride to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1993, and her program singleseason records for batting average (.514), hits (80), doubles (21), and triples (10), and career records for doubles (68) and triples (29) still stand.
Shannon Boyle Named To 2019 U.S. Women’s U19 Training Team
Hofstra University sophomore Shannon Boyle was named to the 2019 U.S. Women’s U19 Training Team as she was selected from the 110 players that participated in a threeday tryout at U.S. Lacrosse headquarters. The first training weekend for the 36-player team will be held Oct. 5-8 at the Team USA Fall Classic in conjunction with the U.S. Men’s and Women’s Senior Teams at US Lacrosse. The 2019 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women’s U19 World Championship will be held Aug. 1-10, 2019 in Peterborough, Canada.
