Tonight’s honorees truly are outstanding. They are advocates for the underrepresented, they are leaders in the workplace and in the community, and they are role models for young women aspiring to join the legal profession. We are proud to honor such a diverse and accomplished group of women.

Laura Curran

Nassau County Executive

Laura Curran was elected County

She started in public service as a Trustee on the Baldwin Board of Education from 201114, serving as President in her final year. She is a member of the Baldwin and Freeport Chambers of Commerce and the Baldwin Civic Association.

Executive in the 2017 elections. A former two-time County legislator, she is the ninth County Executive and the first female elected to the office.

County Executive Curran began her career as a reporter at the New York Daily News and the New York Post. She specialized in in-depth features, often writing about Long Island.

She was an Adjunct Professor of Journalism at SUNY Purchase.

She earned her B.A. in Liberal Arts at Sarah Lawrence College, and lives in Baldwin with her husband and their three daughters.

Outstanding Women in Law JUDICIAL EXCELLENCE HONOREE

The Honorable Elizabeth H. Emerson Supreme Court Justice, Suffolk County, State of New York Unified Court System Justice Emerson is a founding member and Co-Chair of the Suffolk County Bar Association Commercial Division Committee. She served as a member of the Chief Judge’s Task Force on Commercial Litigation in the 21st Century.

Justice Emerson also designed and implemented Project Assist, a program that connects members of the public with programs providing services supporting basic needs. Since 2004, she has authored Chapter 84, “Secured Transactions,” in the highly regarded Commercial Litigation in New York State Courts.

Justice Elizabeth H. Emerson graduated magna cum laude from Boston College and magna cum laude from Syracuse University College of Law. She was elected to the Supreme Court in 1996. In 2002, then Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti asked her to became the first Commercial Division Justice in Suffolk County, and she has served in that capacity ever since.

Prior to 1996, Justice Emerson was a partner of Shearman & Sterling, where she represented domestic and foreign commercial banks, investment banks, and corporations in the structuring, negotiating, and documentation of complex transactions in both the public and private sector. Justice Emerson began her practice at White & Case, where she represented corporate clients in a variety of securities litigation, general commercial litigation, bankruptcy, and other complex proceedings.

Justice Emerson has served for several years as an Adjunct Professor at Stony Brook University in the Master of Business Administration program and has taught or lectured at other institutions, including Fordham University School of Law, St. John’s University School of Law, and Dowling College.

“When I become a lawyer, I sought to use my skills to seek positive change, particularly with respect to gender equality.

I am grateful to Dean Prudenti and Hofstra Law School for this award as I hope it demonstrates that I have achieved some of these goals.”

Outstanding Women in Law JUDICIAL EXCELLENCE HONOREE

The Honorable Angela Iannacci Associate Justice, Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, State of New York Unified Court System extensive private practice with American International Group; Rossano, Mose, Hirschhorn & Corleto, P.C., in Garden City, New York; and Gordon & Silber, P.C., in Manhattan, concentrating in personal injury, medical malpractice and general liability matters. She also maintained a solo general practice, Angela G. Iannacci, P.C., in Great Neck, New York.

Justice Angela Iannacci has served as a member of the bench since 2004. She was elected to Family Court and was appointed Acting Supreme Court Justice. Two years later, she was elected to the Supreme Court, Nassau County. In 2009, Justice Iannacci was appointed Associate Justice for the Appellate Term in the 9th and 10th Judicial Districts, where she presided over criminal and civil appeals, as well as continuing her Supreme Court docket, where she presided over civil and guardianship matters. In May 2017, Justice Iannacci was appointed Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department, by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Justice Iannacci received her B.A. from George Washington University in 1983, majoring In Political Science and Economics, and her J.D. from Pace University School of Law in 1986. In May 2012, she was designated a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London, England. In addition, Justice Iannacci is an Adjunct Associate Professor at St. John’s University in Queens.

Prior to taking the bench, Justice Iannacci held several legal positions, including Principal Court Attorney to the Honorable Allan L. Winick, as Hearing Officer in Small Claims Assessment Review Proceedings, and 15 years of

The Honorable Sandra Sgroi ’78 Associate Justice, Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, State of New York Unified Court System Justice Sandra Sgroi was elected to the Supreme Court for the 10th Judicial District in 2000 and was appointed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, Second Judicial Department, in October 2009. In November 2014, she was re-elected to the Supreme Court, Suffolk County, and re-designated to the Appellate Division by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Justice Sgroi is a graduate of Hofstra Law and the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she obtained her B.A. in Sociology. She is admitted to the Southern District of New York, the Eastern District of New York, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Justice Sgroi is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Suffolk County Bar Association, the Woman’s Bar Association of the State of New York, the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association, and the Association of Supreme Court Justices of the State of New York.

She was previously elected to the District Court for the 4th District, Town of Smithtown. Prior to her election to the bench, Justice Sgroi served as Town Attorney and Councilwoman for the Town of Smithtown.

Myra Freed Law Firm of Myra L. Freed, Esq. President, New York Women’s Bar Association Association. Ms. Freed is honored to serve as the NYWBA 2017-18 President.

Myra L. Freed has been practicing law in Manhattan, specializing in matrimonial law, since1981. She also serves as a private pay Attorney for the Child in custody and parenting time litigation. In addition, she practices collaborative law as an alternative to the litigation process in family law matters.

Founded in 1934, the NYWBA is devoted to improving the status of women in society, educating women lawyers, assisting them in professional development and advancement, and promoting the fair and equal administration of justice. These goals are accomplished through the work of its committees, the presentation of CLE programs, and the evaluation of judicial candidates.

NYWBA also comments on proposed legislation and policy initiatives at the state, federal and international levels that are of concern to women and children.

Ms. Freed is a proud Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude graduate of The City College of New York, where she received the Leskes Award in the fields of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. She received her J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

Since joining the New York Women’s Bar Association (NYWBA) in 1984, Ms. Freed has served on numerous committees and held several offices and Chair positions.

Outstanding Women in Law COMMITMENT TO WOMEN IN LAW LEADERSHIP HONOREE

Maureen McLoughlin Solo Practitioner, President, Nassau County Women’s Bar Association While in law school, Ms. McLoughlin became active in the NCWBA and the Nassau County Bar Association.

She served on committees and CLE panels, sharing her wealth of knowledge in the areas of child welfare, foster care, domestic violence, and other issues impacting children and families.

Maureen McLoughlin, Esq. was the 2014 recipient of the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association’s Virginia C. Duncombe, Esq. Scholarship Award. She previously served as the Chapter’s President-elect, Vice President for Membership and Programs, and Treasurer. She has been a member of the NCWBA for over 15 years. She has devoted her entire professional life to advocating for and protecting children.

Ms. McLoughlin has been an Adjunct Professor at Hofstra University and Long Island University and a Distinguished Lecturer at Molloy College. Currently, she serves on the Attorney for the Child Panel in the Second Department.

Ms. McLoughlin was awarded a Master’s degree in Social Work from Fordham University in 1982 and spent the next 26 years with the Department of Social Services, rising through the ranks from Caseworker to Supervisor to Assistant Director to Director of Child Protective Services. While working full time as the Director of CPS, she took her passion for protecting children and families to greater heights by attending the night program at St. John’s University School of Law, where she was President of the Family Law Society.

Ms. McLoughlin is unswerving in her dedication to the causes she champions so fiercely, and has great respect for the women and men who have guided and mentored her.

Megan Tomlin Of Counsel, Simons Law Group PLLC President, Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association Megan M. Tomlin earned a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in 2011, with a focus on Matrimonial and Family Law, and a B.A. in Journalism from The Pennsylvania State University.

Nassau County Bar Association Matrimonial Committee, and the Suffolk County Matrimonial Bar Association.

Ms. Tomlin was also named as the May 2016 Alumni of the Month by Touro Law Center. In May 2014, her article “Divorcing with Special Needs Children” was published in the Nassau Lawyer.

Ms. Tomlin is also a Delegate for the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York and a member of the New York State Bar Association Family Law Committee, the Suffolk County Bar Association, the

Robin Abramowitz ’89 Partner, Lazer, Aptheker, Rosella & Yedid, PC Robin S. Abramowitz is a Partner in the firm of Lazer, Aptheker, Rosella & Yedid, PC and co-chairs the firm’s Litigation practice group. She is admitted to practice in the states of New York and Florida, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York and the Middle and Southern Districts of Florida, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. She is an Arbitrator on the Commercial Panel for the American Arbitration Association and is on the roster of Mediators for the Commercial Division in Suffolk County.

Kristin Ashman Managing Director, Regional Team Lead, First Republic Trust Company Kristin Ashman is a Managing Director and Regional Team Lead with First Republic Trust Company.

Active in the New York Trust & Estate community, Ms. Ashman is a current member of the Calvary Hospital Professional Advisors Council, the New York City Estate Planning Council, and the New York Women’s Bar Association, as well as the New York and Connecticut Bar Associations.

Ms. Ashman has over 18 years of experience, most recently with Brown Brothers Harriman Trust Company, where she served as Regional Trust Head overseeing approximately 450 complex estate and personal trust relationships with assets under management totaling over $1 billion. Before joining Brown Brothers Harriman in 2003, she was with Bessemer Trust Company and Citigroup Trust Company.

Ms. Ashman earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and International Relations from Syracuse University and a Juris Doctor degree from New York Law School.

Rosalia Baiamonte Member, Gassman Baiamonte Gruner, P.C. an officer of the Matrimonial Law Committee and is the immediate past Chair of that Committee (2015-17). In June 2014, she received the Richard J. Keidel Memorial Award in recognition of her skilled advocacy, leadership and professionalism.

Rosalia Baiamonte has been engaged exclusively in the practice of matrimonial and family law since her admission to the Bar in 1994. In March 1996, she became an Associate of Stephen Gassman, Esq., a renowned leader in the field of matrimonial and family law; she was named a member of the firm on August 1, 2007.

Ms. Baiamonte is an active member of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). She was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section in July 2011. She served as the Section’s Financial Officer (2014-16) and its Secretary (2016-18) and is currently the Vice Chair of the Section; she is also a Co-Chair of the Section’s CLE Committee.

Ms. Baiamonte is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

Ms. Baiamonte is an active member of the Nassau County Bar Association (NCBA). She served three years as an elected member of its Board of Directors; she served six years on the Judiciary Committee, culminating her tenure as Chair of that Committee (2014-15), for which she received the Directors’ Award for Outstanding Service; and she served eight years as

Elaine Colavito Partner, Sahn Ward Coschignano, PLLC in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, The National Law Journal named Ms. Colavito a Trailblazer in Divorce, Trusts & Estates. She received the Long Island Business News Leadership in the Law Award in 2017 in the Associates category, as well as the LIBN Top 50 Women of Long Island Award in 2017.

Elaine M. Colavito, Esq. is a Partner with Sahn Ward Coschignano, PLLC in Uniondale, New York. She concentrates her practice in family, matrimonial law, immigration, trusts, estates and civil litigation.

Ms. Colavito is the President-elect of the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association (NCWBA), which promotes the advancement of women in the law and in general. She was first elected as a member of the Board of Directors in 2012 and, in 2013, was elected Treasurer. She was Vice President from 2015-17. In 2013, she was honored by the NCWBA with the Bessie Ray Geffner, Esq. Award.

Ms. Colavito writes “Bench Briefs,” a monthly column for The Suffolk Lawyer.

Ms. Colavito was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2008. She graduated summa cum laude from Stony Brook University and magna cum laude from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. She is a member of the Suffolk and Nassau County Bar Associations. In her personal life, she has eight children ages 1½ to 17.

Kathleen Deegan Dickson Partner, Forchelli Deegan Terrana LLP Kathleen Deegan Dickson concentrates her practice in the areas of real estate development matters and, in particular, land use and zoning law.

Ms. Deegan Dickson has an extensive track record of success with and before municipal boards and agencies on significant projects throughout Long Island. Leslie Feifer ’94 Partner, Jaspan Schlesinger LLP the state of New York, before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, and in the state of New Jersey. She is a member of the Nassau County and New York State Bar Associations.

Leslie Feifer is a Partner with Jaspan Schlesinger LLP in the firm’s Real Estate practice group, where she concentrates her practice in all phases of commercial and residential real estate. She represents institutional and private lenders in mortgage transactions; purchasers and sellers in connection with sales and acquisitions of real property, including retail, office, warehouse, industrial and multi-family properties; owners in connection with sophisticated real estate refinancing transactions; and landlords and tenants in connection with commercial leasing matters.

Ms. Feifer has taught as a Special Professor of Law at Hofstra Law, has acted as a mentor to law students, and has been recognized by the New York Real Estate Journal as a “Woman in Real Estate” and in Long Island Business News’ “Who’s Who in Commercial & Residential Real Estate Law.” In 2011, she received the National Association of Women Business Owners Long Island Chapter’s Businesswomen of Excellence Award.

Ms. Feifer received her Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra Law and her Bachelor of Science degree in Consumer Economics and Housing from Cornell University College of Human Ecology. She is admitted to practice law in

Silvia Pastor Finkelstein Assistant District Attorney/Director, Office of Immigrant Affairs, Nassau County District Attorney’s Office Silvia Pastor Finkelstein is an Assistant District Attorney and Director of the Office of Immigrant Affairs at the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.

In January 2012, Ms. Finkelstein was named Deputy Bureau Chief of the Narcotics & Gangs Bureau and Chief of the Prescription Drug Unit. In 2015, she was promoted to Director of the Office of Immigrant Affairs.

Ms. Finkelstein joined the Special Victims Bureau in 2001 and spent several years trying cases involving felony sex crimes and domestic violence. In 2007, she became Chief of the Child Abuse Unit and led the interdisciplinary team that investigated felony sexual crimes and assaults committed against children. She tried many cases where the victims were children under 13 years old who had been subjected to severe physical and/or sexual abuse.

Ms. Finkelstein is a NYPTI (New York Prosecutors Training Institute) lecturer and is a member of PINY (Protecting Immigrant New Yorkers) task force. She is a founding member and current President of DALIA (District Attorneys League for Immigrant Affairs).

A native of Madrid, Spain, she is fluent in Spanish and French.

Outstanding Women in Law HONOREE

Marisa Friedrich ’99 Attorney, Tenenbaum Law, P.C. Ms. Friedrich started her career with the Legal Services Group at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, where she provided federal tax consulting and planning services to multinational clients in the financial services industry, with an emphasis on capital markets and hedge fund clients. She went on to tax research and planning at Adecco, where she performed extensive research and analysis of tax issues pertaining to international services operations and cross-border transactions.

Marisa Friedrich is an Associate at Tenenbaum Law, P.C., concentrating in the resolution of federal and New York State tax controversies. She has been a member of the New York Bar since 2000.

In her current role, Ms. Friedrich consults clients to resolve various federal and New York State tax controversies, including offers in compromise, installment agreements, installment payment agreements, responsible person assessments, and residency and domicile audits. She specializes in researching controversy procedures and tax law to develop resolution strategies individually designed and factually based on each client’s particular circumstances.

She has negotiated successful settlements with federal, New York State, and administrative agencies on clients’ behalf.

Ms. Friedrich earned her J.D. in Law from Hofstra Law. She earned her Bachelor of Arts with New College Honors from Hofstra University.

Born and raised in Syosset, New York, Ms. Friedrich currently resides in Upper Brookville, New York, with her husband and five children. She is an active Parent Council member in the local school district, known for her inclusionary efforts to help children with food allergies participate in school events.

Averie Hason ’01 Assistant General Patent Counsel, Eli Lilly and Company Ms. Hason has been the Chair of the Lilly NJ/NY Women’s Network since 2014. She was nominated by senior Lilly legal leadership and Lilly’s General Counsel to serve as Lilly’s 2014 Fellow for the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. She co-founded and co-led Lilly NJ/NY’s first Lean In Circle, a small peer group that meets regularly to learn and grow in line with the mission of Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In organization.

Ms. Hason serves as a formal and informal mentor to many colleagues within Lilly as well as outside of the company. Her efforts have encouraged women to apply to law school, reach for stretch jobs/assignments, and become certified as a paralegal, just to name a few.

Averie K. Hason is Assistant General Patent Counsel with Eli Lilly and Company. She focuses on patent litigation, inter partes review proceedings, transactional matters, and client counseling for pharmaceutical products.

From 2007-08, Ms. Hason was Head of Intellectual Property for ImClone Systems, responsible for all intellectual property matters worldwide. Prior to joining ImClone, she was a Litigation Associate in the New York office of White & Case.

Ms. Hason is a registered patent attorney, received a Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra Law in 2001, and graduated cum laude from the University of Delaware in 1998 with a B.A. in Biological Sciences.

Jennifer Hillman Partner, Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, P.C. Jennifer F. Hillman’s practice includes all manner of Surrogate’s Court proceedings, including accounting proceedings, probate contests, discovery proceedings, and commercial litigation related to estates. She practices in the Surrogate’s Courts as well as the trial and appellate courts throughout New York.

Ms. Hillman is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, where she serves as Co-Vice Chair of the Surrogate’s Court Committee. She is also a member of the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association and is on the Board of Directors of the Nassau County Women’s Bar Foundation.

Judy Hirshon ’79 Staff Attorney, Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee, Inc. After a 20-year hiatus, Judy Hirshon returned to Adelphi University to complete her college education.

She graduated with honors in 1976, and then went on Hofstra Law.

She has been there ever since. In 1991, Ms. Hirshon was promoted to Supervising Attorney of the Unit, but in 2006, after an illness, she decided to return to a staff position.

After graduating from Hofstra Law in 1979, Ms. Hirshon joined a personal injury firm, where she wrote appeal briefs and learned how to try cases under the mentorship of one of the trial attorneys.

On behalf of low-income individuals and families, the Civil Unit seeks to obtain and retain housing through Fair Housing Law litigation, to preserve clients’ housing and to force landlords to correct dangerous conditions that exist in the housing units. Throughout the years, it has been Ms. Hirshon’s privilege to have helped thousands of clients in these endeavors. She is proud of the work Law Services does to help persons with important quality-of-life issues.

It was always her dream to represent those who are often underserved by our legal system. In 1984, Ms. Hirshon achieved that dream when she joined Nassau/ Suffolk Law Services as a Staff Attorney in the Civil Unit.

Leslie Holman ’87 President, Holman Immigration Law the National Interagency Committee. She continues to serve on AILA’s National CBP Liaison Committee and as liaison to the regional ports of entry for AILA’s New England Chapter.

Leslie A. Holman has been practicing law for more than 30 years and immigration and nationality law exclusively since 1999. She is the founder of Holman Immigration Law, a firm located in Burlington, Vermont, and dedicated to the practice of immigration and nationality law. The firm represents both corporate and individual clients in a wide variety of immigration matters.

Ms. Holman is also a member of the Vermont State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and a member of the Programming Committee of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. In 2008, she was awarded the Sam Williamson Mentor Award for excellence in mentoring and counseling.

Ms. Holman’s close proximity and access to the U.S.Canadian border has provided her with a unique understanding of border- and complex admissionrelated matters.

Ms. Holman has presented more than 75 panels on immigration-related issues with both with her peers and government representatives from the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State.

Veronica Irwin ’99 Partner, Irwin & Streiner, LLC Veronica Irwin has been a practicing attorney for 19 years, having graduated from Hofstra Law in 1999.

Her were both born in Puerto Rico and instilled in her an excellent work ethic and strong sense of social responsibility. Eleven years ago, Ms. Irwin opened her own firm and was able to devote considerable time to social issues and pro bono work.

Rican Bar. Recently, after years of judging mock trial competitions at the collegiate level, Ms. Irwin has had the opportunity to coach a High School Mock Trial team, allowing her to encourage and nurture the aspirations of future attorneys.

Evelyn Kalenscher ’89 Pro-Bono Attorney, Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee, Inc. Since 2010, Evelyn Kalenscher has volunteered two days a week for the Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee, Inc. Volunteer Lawyers Project, representing indigent tenants facing eviction. As an Attorney Emeritus providing hundreds of hours of pro bono legal services a year, she has helped hundreds of families facing eviction in the midst of Long Island’s affordable-housing crisis.

Prior to retiring from private practice, Ms. Kalenscher was a partner in Genoa, Kalenscher & Noto, P.C., where she concentrated in matrimonial and real estate law.

Ms. Kalenscher is on the Executive Committee of the Theodore Roosevelt American Inn of Court as Program Coordinator. She is an active member of the Nassau County Bar Association, where she is a member of the District Court Committee and past Chair of its Ethics and House Domus Committees. She is a member of the New York State Bar Association on the Real Property Committee and a board member and recent Treasurer of Yashar, the Attorney’s and Judge’s Chapter of Hadassah.

Michelle Laskin ’90 Owner, Laskin Law PC Michelle Laskin has practiced as a plaintiff’s personal injury attorney for over 27 years. She is one of the leading female attorneys in her profession. Ms. Laskin has her own firm, Laskin Law PC, and throughout her career she has obtained settlements or verdicts of over $75 million.

In 2001, Ms. Laskin obtained the 10th-largest verdict for a woman who lost her leg after being struck by a drunk driver. This case also involved the first dram shop action against a national pharmacy chain for selling beer. The pharmacy chain settled its claim for a substantial sum.

In 2016, Ms. Laskin settled a road design case with the City of New York for $2.5 million. Her client was struck by a driver drag racing on a city street. Due to her exhaustive investigation, it was revealed that the roadway had been ranked among the top 10 most dangerous roads, thereby leading to this multimilliondollar settlement.

In 1994, Ms. Laskin represented the parents of a baby who was born with a congenital heart disease. Because of the insurance industry’s 24-hour newborn hospital stay policy, the heart defect was not diagnosed and the baby died from this treatable defect. Along with the baby’s parents, Ms. Laskin worked to lobby the New York State Assembly, and the mandatory 48-hour hospital stay became law.

In 2017, Ms. Laskin represented a Wall Street executive who sustained head trauma as a result of being struck by a distracted driver. She recovered over $1 million.

Catherine Leahy Scott ’85 Inspector General, New York State Office of the Inspector General for conducting independent external investigations of forensic laboratories across New York state.

Catherine Leahy Scott is the New York State Inspector General serving since February 2012, the Acting Welfare Inspector General since October 2012, and the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Inspector General since February 2015.

Inspector General Leahy Scott also investigates allegations of fraud and abuse within the social services and workers’ compensation delivery systems.

As New York State Inspector General, Ms. Leahy Scott has authority over 200 state agencies, authorities, boards, and commissions covering more than 200,000 state employees working in the executive branch of State government.

Previously, Ms. Leahy Scott served as an Assistant Attorney General for New York State. She also served for more than 13 years at the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office, eight as First Assistant District Attorney, and served as a Columbia County Assistant Public Defender.

Ms. Leahy Scott also has oversight over major infrastructure projects throughout New York state, including the New NY Bridge project, the multibilliondollar effort to replace the Hudson River’s Tappan Zee Bridge.

Ms. Leahy Scott received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hofstra University, where she was named Hofstra University’s Woman of the Year in 1981, and her law degree in 1985 from Hofstra Law.

Debra Keller Leimbach Chief Clerk, Surrogate’s Court, New York State Office of Court Administration and is accountable to the Surrogate, Regional Court Administrators, and the Office of Court Administration, and for managing all aspects of the Surrogate’s Court operations.

Debra “Debbie” Keller Leimbach was named Chief Clerk of the Nassau County Surrogate’s Court in March of 2017. She is the first female Chief Clerk to serve in this position since the Court opened in 1899. Prior to becoming Chief Clerk, she was the Principal Law Clerk to Surrogate Margaret C. Reilly, beginning January of 2016.

Ms. Leimbach is a member of the New York State Surrogate’s Court Chief Clerk’s Association, Metropolitan Chief Clerk’s Association, New York State Surrogate Forums Committee, and the New York State Surrogate Committee on Standard and Goals.

Ms. Leimbach also served as Principal Law Clerk to then Supreme Court Justice Margaret C. Reilly, from January 2012 to December 2015, in the Nassau County Supreme Court. From 1997-2011, Ms. Leimbach was employed as a Senior Court Attorney for the Nassau County District Court. She started her legal career as a Prosecutor for the Nassau County Traffic Violations Agency.

The Honorable Emily Pines ’76 (Ret.) Chief of Staff/Special Counsel, Town of Brookhaven in the New York State Supreme Court and the Appellate Division, Second Department. In 1993, Ms. Pines was appointed the Town Attorney for the Town of Brookhaven.

Emily Pines graduated in 1976 with distinction from Hofstra Law, where she was granted the first award for Scholarship and Service to the Law School. Following graduation, she began her legal career in Albany as Staff Counsel for the New York Public Service Commission, appearing on behalf of the Commission in administrative environmental proceedings.

In 1999, Ms. Pines was appointed and then elected to the 6th District Court, presiding over arraignments, criminal trials, municipal code matters, and landlordtenant disputes. In 2001, Judge Pines was elected to New York State Supreme Court, presiding over civil and commercial litigations, and cases brought under Article 10 of the Mental Hygiene law. In 2006, Justice Pines was appointed to the Pattern Jury Instruction Committee, where she still serves as a member.

Beginning in 1980, Ms. Pines served as Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Commercial Division of the New York City Law Department, where she was named Municipal Attorney of the Year by the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals in 1983. In 1988, Ms. Pines began her work as Bureau Chief of the Municipal Law Division of the Suffolk County Department of Law, and thereafter was promoted to Deputy County Attorney, trying cases

Kristen Reed is 48 years old and married to Robert, and they have four children: Samantha, Skylar, Trinity and Aidan.

Ms. Reed’s focus is defense litigation. She is Senior Trial Attorney and Head of the Appeals Department. She had the privilege of clerking for the late Justice Joseph Kunzeman, General Counsel to the firm.

Ms. Reed obtained her B.B.A. in 1992 from Hofstra University, where she played Division I field hockey and Division I lacrosse. In field hockey, she was captain and MVP; in lacrosse, she was defense captain, MVP defensive player and Regional All-American. Ms. Reed obtained her J.D. in 1996 from Hofstra Law, where she was a member of Hofstra Law Women and the Trial Advocacy Club.

Ms. Reed is a permanent Adjunct Professor at Nassau Community College in the Criminal Justice Department, Associate Counsel to the New York State Fraternal Order of Police, and a member of the Nassau County Bar Association.

Although her employer changed names over the years, Ms. Reed has worked at same firm for 25 years. She began as a Legal Secretary, worked throughout law school and was ultimately hired as a full-time Associate.

Dariely Rodriguez ’06 Director, Economic Justice Project, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law She also handled three major retail accessibility matters that resulted in settlement agreements requiring over 60 shopping centers throughout the state of New York to become accessible to individuals with disabilities, and served as the lead attorney in the high-profile investigations and resolutions of consumer profiling allegations against two national retailers. Ms. Rodriguez also served as Co-Chair of the Attorney General’s Office’s internal Equal Employment Opportunity Committee.

Dariely Rodriguez is Director of the Economic Justice Project at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, where she leads the Committee’s efforts to combat employment discrimination and to address ongoing economic and racial inequality through litigation, public education and policy advocacy. Ms. Rodriguez is also CoChair of the Employment Task Force of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the national umbrella organization of American civil rights groups.

Before joining the Lawyers’ Committee, Ms. Rodriguez worked as an Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office. In the area of health care transactions, Ms. Simone has acted as health care regulatory counsel on mergers and acquisitions of both public and private health care entities and regularly works on joint ventures and other contractual arrangements, such as employment agreements, professional services agreements and license/lease arrangements. Christina Singh-Bedell ’08 Assistant Attorney General, New York State Office of the Attorney General District Attorney’s Office. As an ADA, she prosecuted violent felony offenses and was a member of the DWI Trial Bureau. She was a mentor to new ADAs by assisting with their training and volunteered with the DA’s Mentor Program, mentoring fifth-grade students during the school year.

Christina H. Singh-Bedell is currently an Assistant Attorney General with the New York State Attorney General’s Office, where she represents the State of New York in state and federal courts. She also handles affirmative action litigation involving civil rights and consumer frauds.

Ms. Singh-Bedell was selected for the Attorney General’s Special Prosecution and Investigations Unit, which is responsible for police-related death in custody cases pursuant to the Governor’s Executive Order No. 147. For her exceptional work in that Unit, she was awarded the “Innovation in Law Enforcement Award.” She is also a Special Professor of Law for Hofstra Law’s Foundational Lawyering Skills course.

Ms. Singh-Bedell is an Executive Committee member of the New York State Bar Association’s Women in the Law Committee, where she advocates for issues pertaining to women in the legal profession. Clinical Professor Lauris Wren, a Williams College and Columbia Law School graduate, founded the Asylum Clinic at Hofstra Law in 2003. Through the Asylum Clinic, law students represent applicants for asylum — people who have fled their countries because of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. The Clinic’s clients come from around the world and face severe obstacles in their application for asylum.

The Clinic has represented hundreds of immigrants and has a 100 percent success rate.

Professor Wren has also served on the Board of Directors of a number of nonprofits, including the Central American Refugee Center.

Prior to coming to Hofstra Law, Professor Wren was the director of the Refugee Assistance Program at the New York City Bar Association. She has also worked at the New York City Legal Aid Society and at the Central American Refugee Center on Long Island.

In her position, she expertly drafts due process complaints, represents clients at Committee on Special Education meetings, conducts client meetings, establishes guardianships, and assists clients in establishing and administering supplemental needs trusts. She also works with clients to create estate plans, particularly in regard to family members with disabilities.

Ms. Craig earned her B.A. in History at Hofstra University. She was on the Dean’s List for all four years and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta — History Honor Society. She also served as Vice President/Co-Founder of the Hofstra University History Club. She went on to earn her J.D. from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsburg Law Center. During her time at the Touro Law Center, she interned with the Long Island Advocacy Center (LIAC), advocating for students with disabilities to acquire access to the services and supports they needed to be successful in the school setting.

Courtney Klapper ’15 Associate, Mauro Lilling Naparty LLP Courtney Klapper is a graduate of Hofstra Law, where she served as the Managing Editor of Staff of the Hofstra Law Review. Throughout law school, she was an active member of the Student Bar Association. Based on her commitment and dedication to Hofstra Law’s community, she received the prestigious Distinguished Service to the School Award at graduation.

Prior to joining MLN, Ms. Klapper was an Associate for several years at a large Long Island-based defense firm, where she focused on insurance coverage, general liability, professional liability, and business litigation.

Ms. Klapper serves as a mentor to many Hofstra Law students and also serves as a mentor to middle school students through the Nasasu County Bar Association.

She frequently conducts mock interviews at Hofstra Law for students and provides them with practical advice for interviewing and practicing law as a young associate.

She is passionate about the Hofstra Law community and never passes up an opportunity to lend a helping hand.

Ms. Klapper has been committed to providing pro bono legal services and was awarded with the Gold Award in Public Service at graduation from Hofstra Law for devoting more than 750 hours to public service.

During law school, she served as a Judicial Intern to the Honorable Denise L. Sher of the Nassau County Supreme Court.

Ellie S. Konstantatos ’10 Attorney, Torino & Bernstein, P.C. Ellie S. Konstantatos was born and raised in New York, New York. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University in 2006 and her Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra Law in 2010. She commenced her employment with Torino & Bernstein, P.C. in September 1999, while in high school, as a member of the support staff.

Upon admission, Ms. Konstantatos became an associate with the firm, practicing in the area of civil defense litigation. She is fluent in Greek.

Ms. Konstantatos was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2010 and was admitted to both the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and for the Southern District of New York in February 2012.

Throughout college, she worked part time on the firm’s administrative staff. Following her graduation from college and upon entering law school, she worked as a paralegal and then as a law clerk.

Ms. Konstantatos resides with her husband in East Williston, New York.

She spearheads the firm’s Estate and Trust division, overseeing all phases of probate and estate administration as well as the estate litigation matters. In addition to her trust and estate practice, she is certified to serve as Counsel and Court Evaluator in Supreme Court guardianship matters as well as a Guardian ad Litem in Surrogate’s Court matters. She is licensed to practice law in New York state.

While attending law school, Ms. Reed received the Linda Carmody-Roberts Scholarship for students who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing careers in the trusts & estates and elder law fields. At graduation, she received a Bronze-Level Pro Bono Service Award for her work with the Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Senior Citizens Law Project. Ariel Ronneburger ’09 Associate, Cullen and Dykman LLP infringement matters in federal court, and advising clients on issues related to trademarks, copyrights, and the protection of intellectual property on social media.

Ariel E. Ronneburger is an Associate in Cullen and Dykman’s Commercial Litigation and Intellectual Property practices and is based in the firm’s Garden City office. She focuses her practice on intellectual property-, employment-, and energy-related matters.

Ms. Ronneburger currently serves as the Chair of the Nassau County Bar Association Intellectual Property Committee, and has been chosen to speak at several national webinars regarding the issue of trademark protection on the internet.

Ms. Ronneburger regularly represents clients in a variety of matters for banking and financial institutions, including handling eminent domain proceedings for major utility companies, civil rights matters and contract disputes.

This past year, Ms. Ronneburger dedicated substantial time to a pro bono matter representing a woman in law enforcement who has brought charges against her employer regarding sexual harassment and systemic sexual discrimination against women.

Most notably, Ms. Ronneburger played a role in helping the firm become a registered agent with the Trademark Clearinghouse, and advises clients with regard to registration of trademarks with the Trademark Clearinghouse, securing new top-level domains and protecting their trademarks from misuse with these new domains.
