The Right Program for You School of Communication The School of Communication prepares students for exciting careers in the fast-changing, constantly evolving world of modern communications by offering challenging courses and programs that examine, among other things, how people share information and interact with each other, how customers and companies communicate with each other, and how government is being transformed under the pressure of new ways to disseminate information. Students are taught in small classes led by an outstanding, diverse faculty, including two Fulbright Scholars, Emmy Award winners, groundbreaking filmmakers, veteran journalists, and published authors. Our modern facilities include cutting-edge control and editing rooms, a state-of-the-art converged multimedia newsroom with the latest digital editing software and large plasma screens, as well as two sound stages, one of which is the largest non-commercial film and television soundstage on Long Island. Numerous student-run media include the sketch comedy show Thursday Night Live, news site Long Island Report (named 2012 Best Website by Press Club of Long Island), the Hofstra Filmmakers’ Club, and WRHU 88.7 FM, Radio Hofstra University, ranked the Best College Station in New York City and Long Island and No. 6 nationally by The Princeton Review. Studying just 25 miles from New York City, School of Communication students regularly participate in internships with the top media companies in the world, giving them a much-envied edge in the 21st-century job market.
The School of Communication is composed of the Departments of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations; Radio, Television, Film; and Speech Communication, Rhetoric, and Performance Studies. It also offers a cost-effective accelerated dual degree program where you can earn a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in journalism in five years. School of Communication undergraduates can also rely on high-quality, comprehensive career services from Hofstra University’s Career Center. Career counselors help students build strong resumes and secure valuable internships as well as jobs after graduation. Career Center services and resources include one-on-one appointments with career counselors, access to thousands of job and internship postings, career fairs, on-campus recruitment programs, career-related webshops, mock interviews, resume and cover letter writing, and online management of recommendation letters.
