“RACE” AND “RIOTS” IN AMERICAN MEMORY Tuesday March 10, 2020 11:10 a.m.-12:35 p.m. Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater Axinn Library, First Floor, South Campus What gets called a “race riot” in America? How do we mis-remember events? Dr. McGunnigle-Gonzales will discuss racial segregation, tension, and the role of “race” and place in the construction of American “race riots.” Together, we’ll dig into the case of a 1964 civil-rights era protest on Long Island to see what was reported then and what is remembered today to better understand sociologically how communities make memory and meaning out of their difficult pasts. This research project has been sponsored by a Center for "Race," Culture and Social Justice's Faculty Summer Research Grant 2019.
