STITCHED TOGETHER: Workers, Students & the Movement for Alta Gracia American college students began building a national anti-sweatshop movement two decades ago when they learned that much of their college clothing was made in abusive and unsafe factories abroad. This upbeat film shows how garment workers in the Dominican Republic have transformed their former sweatshop factory into what could be a new model for global manufacturing: a fair trade firm with decent wages, respect for worker rights, and an independent union. Introduced by Dr. Mary Anne Trasciatti (Rhetoric Dept., Hofstra)
12:45 - 2:10 pm
IL POSTO In this classic neorealist film by Ermanno Olmi, a young man cuts short his education to help support his poor family by applying for a job at a big city corporation. After a bizarre series of tests and interviews, he is hired as a messenger, gradually losing his individuality as he begins trying to scale the corporate job ladder. Only the prospect of romance with young Anonietta seems to offer any hope of redemption. Introduced by Dr. Isabelle Freda (Radio, TV & Film Dept., Hofstra)
2:20 - 3:45 pm
SHIFT CHANGE In today’s jobs crisis, some entrepreneurs, employees and public officials are finding novel ways to fight offshoring and restore decent jobs and community stability. This movie presents gripping stories of firms, from San Francisco to Spain, that are owned and managed by their workers – “shared capitalism.” Surprisingly, they tend to be both more profitable and more committed to the communities where they are based. Yet the public knows little of their prospects for fairer treatment at work. Introduced by Dr. Gregory DeFreitas (Economics Dept. & Labor Studies Program, Hofstra)
4:30 - 6 pm
INEQUALITY FOR ALL “Smart, funny and articulate, Robert Reich is the university professor we all wish we'd had. He's so accessible and entertaining he takes a subject that sounds soporific and makes it come alive like you wouldn't believe in "Inequality for All. That topic, as the title indicates, is the widening income gap in the United States between the hugely rich and the rest of us. Reich and documentary director Jacob Kornbluth turn out to be the ideal collaborators to tell the story of what that gap is, why it happened and why it's important, all in a totally engaging way.” –Washington Post (9/26/13) ______________________________________________________________________
