A return to on-campus learning also allowed Literacy Studies students and faculty to celebrate together once again and honor students’ completion of projects and research.

education during the height of Covid 19, it was the first time for them to meet their peers and their professors face to-face, rather than via zoom. They were not deterred; however, and took to campus by storm! From bonding with each other, creating engaging pedagogical practices for their literacy practicum students, and developing into caring, scholar-practitioners, the students reached their goals of becoming NY State Literacy Specialists. The Literacy Studies faculty are super proud of them.

In addition to her teaching and scholarship, Professor Goodman professionally represented the Literacy Studies Program through her longtime engagement with National and International organizations. She was very active in the Whole Language Umbrella (WLU) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). She chaired the NCTE Elementary Section Steering Committee for 4 years, served as President of WLU, and was President of the Center for Expansion
Throughout their time in the Literacy Studies Program, Literacy Studies students read several of Thanhha Lai’s books. These include; Inside Out and Back Again, a book partly based on her childhood as a Vietnamese refuge growing up in the southern United States, and for which she won a Newbery Honor and the National Book Award; Butterfly Yellow, the winner of the 2020 Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction; and Listen Slowly.

Afer Twenty three Years Professor Debra Goodman is Saying, “Good Bye!”
After 23 years of dedication to the success of the Literacy Studies Programs at Hofstra University, Professor Debra Goodman has retired as of August, 2022. Prior to coming to Hofstra University, Professor Goodman taught in the Detroit Public Schools, where she was recognized for her service to her school and the community. While teaching for the Detroit Public schools, she received her Ph.D. in English Education from Michigan State University where she explored the social nature of literacy learning in whole language classrooms. Her professional writing and research focused on early literacy, literacy pedagogy and evaluation, language and culture, urban teaching and revaluing struggling readers and writers. Her vast pedagogical experience and her knowledge of theory are reflected in the 20 courses she taught and developed for the Literacy Studies Program.
