Catalans Want to Vote

You are invited to attend a talk by: Professor Antònia Casellas, Ph.D. Departament de Geografia, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain

Catalans want to vote: crisis, politics and identity in Spain While many claimed that the European Union would diminish the pull of regional nationalism, this has not been the case. Indeed, religious and national identity have emerged as new mechanisms to establish collective identities. Professor Casellas’ presentation will explore the emergence of regional national identity, analyzing the case of Catalonia (Spain). While there are strong historical, economic and social roots that help explain the Catalan situation, the assertion that “Catalans want to vote for independence” also opens the analysis towards new questions that incorporate issues related to globalization and how people are increasingly questioning the traditional political representation of the nation-state. Professor Casellas is a noted Catalan urban planner, who has published widely in international planning and geography journals. In addition to her position in Barcelona, she has been a visiting faculty member/scholar at the University of Toronto, the Bonn International Center on Conversion, the Center for Urban Policy Research at Rutgers University, the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Utah, and the Geography Department at New Mexico State University.
