COLLOQUIA SERIES A Conversation with Timothy Daniels, PhD Professor, Department of Anthropology

“Blackness in Malaysia: Semang, Indians, and Reflexivity” Scholars seeking to understand contemporary racism in Malaysia often focus on the postcolonial legacy. They note that Malay elites produced an image of Malays as tuan rumah (hosts) and Chinese and Indian citizens as tumpang (guests). Professor Daniels' earlier work on the experiences of African international students in Malaysia suggest the combination of colonial and postcolonial racialization. This talk presents a framework for understanding the conditions and subjectivities of Semang and Indians, two groups of Malaysian citizens considered Black in the broader context. Professor Daniels will discuss his ethnographic research and personal experiences in Malaysia from 1998-2022, including several periods of research in Melaka and a recent visit to the Semang village in Baling, Kedah.
