Senate split into groups to discuss their results and then came back to the table to share what they learned

B.

Senator Rielly explains that a group of SGA members went to the MARK Leadership Conference where they discussed leadership styles and how to leave your own “mark on the world

Motion seconded

ii.

Motion passes unanimously

5. New Business A.

Vice President Normandin explains that both pieces of legislation that are here tonight are from Cabinet last night and these pieces of legislation had to bypass the Rules Committee because it has come up unexpectedly due to recent events i.

Because it did not go through Rules, Senate needs a 3/4 vote to pass this legislation

ii.

Background: tomorrow there will be a protest in Plaza West regarding the Thomas Jefferson Statue outside the Student Center

iii.

Senator MacCarthy asks why the message is being passed before the polling question when the message mentions the poll 1.

Vice President Normandin says yes it will look silly if the message passes and not the poll

2.

Chairperson Radeva asks if the SA.2018.82.003 will be reopened if the poll does not pass a.

iv.

Senator Doan asks how the poll will be distributed 1.

v.

Vice President Normandin says she would like it to go out as a campus wide email

Senator Ramirez asks how long the poll would be open 1.

B.

Vice President Normandin says yes, the legislation can be reopened to revised with a 3/4 vote if this happens

Vice President Normandin says about a week but this could be open for debate and would depend

S.A.2018.82.003 i.

Senator Doan moves to strike “in an effort” to read only “to amplify” 1.

Motion seconded

2.

Objection

3.

Debate a.

Senator Doan for: “in an effort to” sounds wishy-washy, she thinks SGA should take a stance and say, “to amplify” it’s not just “an effort” i.

b.

Yields time to the chair

Senator Crofts against: thinks keeping “in an effort” doesn’t negate the effort being put in and actually shows the students that SGA cares i.

Yields time to Senator Narain - “amplify” leaves it open that if SGA doesn’t get results it won’t look good

ii.

Yields time to Senator Algarin - agrees it’s an empty promise if it’s just “amplify”

3

4.

c.

Chairperson Radeva for: this statement does not need to be diluted and the fact that we are responding to this is an effort so explaining “this is the effort” is unnecessary and the only “promise” being made is that SGA is sending out a poll

d.

Senator Harley against: even if SGA has the statistics SGA cannot guarantee that administration will listen so it’s important to have “in an effort to” because we are going to put in the effort but then if they don’t listen it wouldn’t be SGA’s fault

iv.

2.

Vote: By a vote of 27-0-0 this motion passes

Senator Ismail moves to pass the SA.2018.82.003 1.

Motion seconded

2.

Objection

3.

Motion rescinded

Senator Doan asks for a point of info if the message will be sent to students or how the community will know about this Vice President Normandin says yes the data will go to administration but it will also go on SGA social media as SGA’s stance

Senator Schmidt asks if there will be a question about demographics Vice President Normandin says this is a question that would be dealt with on the poll for SA.2018.82.004

Senator Harley asks who would receive the poll results 1.

vii.

By a vote of 5-22-0 this motion does not pass

Motion seconded

1. vi.

Yields time to Chairperson Denton - “in an effort” makes it not sound as controlling as taking the phrase out does

1.

1. v.

ii.

Senator Ramirez moves to change “on campus” to “located outside of the student center entrance”

a. iii.

Yields time to Senator Crofts - wouldn’t want to lie to student body

Vote to strike “in an effort”: a.

ii.

i.

Vice President Normandin says it will be sent to students and data will be sent to administration but will also be published for students and the public to see just as with other SGA data collect (Student Appreciation Week surveys for example)

Senator Doan moves to add “this data shall be made public and brought to administrators” in the second sentence of second paragraph

4

1.

Motion seconded

2.

Objection

3.

Debate a.

Senator Doan for: thinks students should be aware that they will see/receive results as well not just the administration behind closed doors i.

b.

Senator Ramirez against: agrees with the intent but thinks it should be phrased so that students know what “public” means and where this information will go i.

4.

Yields time to the chair

Yields time to Senator Chiagozie- thinks wording should be changed

c.

Senator Narain for: the polls are always made public for students to see so this just clarifies that

d.

Senator MacCarthy against: agrees but thinks it’s not grammatically correct in the current motion

Vote: a.

By a vote of 2-23-0 this motion does not pass

viii. Senator Doan asks for a point of information on what a moderated caucus is 1.

ix.

Vice President Normandin explains that a moderated caucus is when a number of speakers are picked and speaking time for each speaker is set

Senator Doan moves for an unmoderated caucus for 5 minutes to discuss the wording of how to include “making the poll public” where SGA stays at the table 1.

Motion seconded

2.

This motion passes

3.

Caucus a.

Senator Harley says we should say “available to students” if it’s SGA’s goal to have the students know this

b.

Senator Spann asks if the poll results will be public to everyone i.

Vice President Normandin says SGA is in the middle of a caucus so there are no questions, but yes

c.

Comptroller Kutsch suggests “brought to administrators and made public to student body”

d.

Chairperson Denton agrees but thinks SGA should add “via” after “made public” so people know where results will be available

5

e.

Chairperson Radeva says - instead of “made public” just say “made available” and where students could find the results in case there are concerns about it being completely “public”

f.

Comptroller Kutsch agrees and suggests “brought to administrators and made available to student body via the SGA website” i.

4.

SGA Advisor Boneta adds from the gallery that the website is “public” though

g.

Senator Craig says - our website is outdated it might not be good to direct people there - suggests putting results on social media

h.

Senator Chiagozie says she thinks the results should go somewhere not public and only be available to administration and students, not the media

i.

Senator Crofts agrees that having results available to all media could create a problem

j.

Chairperson Radeva - the wording “available” shows SGA is not hiding anything and thinks it is appropriate for the results to be on the website because this is an official poll and platform and social media is less professional - it’s not a campaign; also it is not a stance, the poll will be data, even if media sees the data SGA doesn’t need to comment

Comptroller Kutsch moves to extend the caucus by one minute a.

Motion seconded

b.

Motion passes unanimously

c.

Senator Tadbiri suggests emailing data to students to protect the protestors

d.

Comptroller Kutsch thinks if we are making the information available to students than it will get to the media anyway and become public because once students know it will get to the media at some point so SGA might as well own the data if SGA polls. It is not SGA taking a position, it is just data

e.

Senator Ismail thinks that if a statement is made then it should be sent to all students or make available on the Hofstra portal

f.

Senator Craig - posting on social media or the website is so public so the portal or email keeps a smaller audience for the results

g.

Senator Doan agrees with having something on the portal but thinks making an announcement so it’s not hidden in the menu tab would be good and also thinks hiding it from media could look bad

h.

Senator Ramirez thinks we need to decide intent. Should the results be public or just available? She thinks it is an issue of

6

safety and thinks that the poll results staying within Hofstra will be important x.

Vice President Normandin clarifies intent: the goal of this message is that the media is contacting Cabinet for statements and this will SGA’s stance

xi.

Comptroller Kutsch moves to open the gallery for SGA Advisor Boneta to speak

xii.

1.

Motion seconded

2.

Motion passes unanimously

3.

SGA Advisor Boneta says that SGA has power and impact: this poll, it can work for or against different groups or create an interesting outcome and data can get very misconstrued. Only a small percentage of students may respond, the impact of this is more important than the small details, SGA should focus on opening doors not closing them

Comptroller Kutsch moves to close the gallery 1.

Motion seconded

2.

Motion passes unanimously

xiii. Senator Schmidt moves to have an unmoderated caucus where Senate does not stay at the table for five minutes to discuss this legislation 1.

Motion seconded

2.

Objection

3.

Motion rescinded

xiv. Chairperson Denton moves to have an unmoderated caucus where Senate does not stay at the table for fifteen minutes to discuss this legislation 1.

Motion seconded

2.

Vice President Normandin says yes, we can if that is what is voted on

xvi. Chairperson Hinson moves to go into an unmoderated caucus where Senate does not stay at the table for 10 minutes about this legislation 1.

Motion seconded

2.

Motion passes unanimously

xvii. Vice President Normandin asks if Senators would like to continue talking for five minutes 1.

Some Senators raise their hands so Vice President Normandin extends the time of the caucus

iii.

Continued Debate on SA.2018.82.003 1.

Senator Doan moves to change the wording to “seeks to facilitate” a.

iv.

No Second - this motion is not seen

Comptroller Kutsch moves to pass SA.2018.82.003 1.

Motion seconded

2.

Objection

3.

Debate a.

b.

Comptroller Kutsch for: after the exhaustive debate this is closest to a solution that SGA can get with SGA’s own difference of opinions i.

Senator Algarin agrees and thinks SGA shouldn’t let debate start to get circular

ii.

Senator Schmidt understands the desire to do more but as a first message the neutrality works

Chairperson Hinson against: still feels that SGA should take a stronger stance since it “hurts” people on campus and even if people disagree, taking a stance is better than saying “there’s a problem but we’re not going to do anything” i.

c.

Yields time to Senator Ramirez - doesn’t think SGA should wait to figure out the majority opinion before making SGA’s opinion and anyone not at Senate tonight gave up their voices by not coming

Senator Narain for: we have debated this for 2 hours already so she gets that others want to add things based on their own feelings, but this is a close agreement also it will say SGA’s stance not “Senate” which incorporates Associates, Justices, and members not present i.

Yields time to Chairperson Radeva - this is a particular issue and is very serious and causes a lot of controversy and this is a good first step and important to stay neutral

8

d.

4.

Vote: a.

E.

Senator Ramirez against: doesn’t think SGA should wait to take action - staying neutral is continuing to silence voices also the counter protest was made after the fact so they didn’t care about the statue before the protest was created

By a vote of 18-4–2 this motion passes

S.A.2018.82.004 i.

ii.

Senator Farooqui moves to Strike SA.2018.82.004 from the Senate Agenda 1.

6. Executive Board Reports A.

B.

C.

Senator Ramirez moves to open the gallery i.

Motion seconded

ii.

Motion passes unanimously

iii.

Ja’loni Owens speaks and says that she organized the protest and wants to say that the past few days people have been threatening her since she started this protest and hopes that campus can support that students who are unrepresented based on their race and that she hopes there is no neutral option because if you say nothing you are against her and people like her don’t have a place at the table and that she’s disappointed that a lot of people are willing to be neutral and crush minorities

Senator Ramirez moves to close the gallery i.

Motion seconded

ii.

Motion passes unanimously

President—R. Cinquemani i.

Not present

D. Vice President—A. Normandin i.

She will be at the protest and encourages all students to go and be politically active; however in terms of SGA: if you attach SGA to your name in any way you cannot stray from the language that was passed tonight and that is neutral 1. Senator Schmidt asks if it would be possible for an initiative to take a stance on the statue issue a. This can be discussed

9

2. Senator Crofts asks how to respond if someone asks “aren’t you in SGA” after you share an opinion a. Vice President Normandin explains that you can say that you are in SGA but then make sure to add that this is your individual opinion b. Chairperson Denton asks about the media 3. Comptroller Kutsch moves to open the gallery a. Motion seconded b. Motion passes unanimously c.

Ja’loni says that there is a separate room set up for media to respect peoples’ privacy and Public Safety will be everywhere so you will not be forced to say anything if you do not want to

d. Senator Ramirez asks what if someone asks you what SGA’s opinion is and then if you agree with it i.

Vice President Normandin says you can have your own opinion and that would sound tricky but please try to keep it separate “this is SGA and this is me” start with yourself and not your tie to SGA

e. Senator Schmidt - since the message says SGA wants to facilitate dialogue it is okay if any protestor asks someone in SGA for help in communicating with administration that she can help i.

Vice President Normandin responds yes

4. Chairperson Radeva moves to close the gallery a. Motion seconded b. Motion passes unanimously ii.

Next Senate: will be a professional development activity: SGA will be taking headshots for SGA’s website as well as for Senators’ professional profiles as well as workshops on LinkedIn, Cover Letters, Resumes, etc. 1. Senator Algarin asks if she could bring technology then to follow along a. Vice President Normandin says yes and adds that the LinkedIn/online portion or info on resumes will not be extensive 2. Chairperson Denton says they will also talk about internships that Senators that have had internships can share and/or how to search for jobs/internships

iii. Wednesday, April 4th will be Open Cabinet for anyone interested in attending especially if they are interested in running next semester at 6:30pm and you may come/go as you please iv. Hofstra Gala

10

1. Senator Craig explains that Gala is held on May 3rd and is a fundraiser for Hofstra where administrators, faculty, students, other Hofstra affiliates attend, it is fun and great for networking 2. Vice President Normandin explains that SGA has money to pay for a table (of 10 seats) at Gala and Senate votes on the ten people they believe should attend; the 10 people with the most votes receive a ticket 3. There is a second SGA sponsored table where any person nominated for a Student Leadership Award is eligible for via a raffle - randomly picked 4. Senator Algarin asks if you are allowed to vote for yourself a. Yes 5. Vice President Normandin will find the Justices/Associates for their votes as well and if you are not here let her know so you can vote also v.

Senator Harley has sign-up sheets 1. Cookout and Conversation with employees of SHACC is especially important; SGA should be there to support as it is in regards to continuing conversation on mental health counseling 2. Senator Harley presents a. SHACC event- Friday April 6th from 12:00pm to 2:00pm and will be great to continue the conversation for mental health counseling and is in a comfortable setting, for asking questions, etc. b. Hofstra’s Pride, Paint, and Plant event - on April 14th from 9am to 12:30pm where you plant gardens and paint fences for elderly in the community who can’t do this for themselves; you get a free t-shirt and free breakfast for participating - the sign up is a google form that will be in the group chat: SGA is the group and Senator Harley is the group leader

vi. April 13th is ResLife’s First Generation Conference - it would be great for SGA to support - referring to students whose parents did not go to college 1. Senator Farooqui adds that it does refer to immigrant students though if they are the first in their family to receive a degree in America 2. Senator Crofts says it is if your parents don’t have 4 year degrees, so it still counts if they have an associate’s degree or gone to a trade school a. Vice President Normandin says Hofstra is all about “selfidentification” so if you identify with first generation in any way you count E. Comptroller—M. Kutsch i.

Reminder: Budget Review is Wednesday, April 4th during common hour in the Dean of Students Hallway and Budgets are due Wednesday, April 4th by 11:59pm via a google form

Senator Ramirez gives a brief rundown of the old HofUSA menu: they had everything: omelettes, burgers, chicken wings, dumplings, brownie sundaes, funnel cakes, pies, shakes, rice bowls, burrito options, quesadillas, mozzarella sticks, grilled cheese, French toast (breakfast all night), fried raviolis, 1. Vice President Normandin recap: essentially it was a diner style with many options

ii. Senator Firooz - brownie sundae iii. Senator Farooqui - pancakes, brownie sundae, sampler platter, ice cream or froyo machine, mozzarella sticks, vegetarian or vegan option that’s not just salad, double grilled cheese, fried ravioli, waffle fries iv. Comptroller Kutsch - seating area that’s not in the way, system of accountability with professors so that students can confidently order books: ex. the bookstore not having inventory is a concern

Minutes of the 82nd Cabinet Hofstra University Student Government Association

April 4th, 2018 Davison Room 020 Meeting Called to Order at 6:31p.m. 1. New Business a. Colin Sullivan: social media conversation i. Tomasso, Colin, and Carley had a conversation regarding SGA’s social media platforms and how they could be revitalized to increase SGA presence online. The decision is to either revamp SGA’s current platforms, or create an entirely new one. ii. Colin and Carley’s experience has shown that it can be really difficult to revamp the current platforms, as it can be difficult to build a page from the ground up. iii. SGA would need to be clear about the change in order to maintain transparency. Moving forward, SGA should consider continuing forward with the current platforms, but being intentional with tone and content. 1. On Facebook today, algorithms make it difficult to gain traction unless you are an individual (groups have a harder time). iv. Colin saw success in just changing his tone on Facebook. 1. Stopped posting so formal, became more casual. 2. Went from two-three sentences per post, to a few words with additional content, such as gifs.

18

v. Cabinet discussed the question of finding a balance between being a resource online for students, and trying to promote too many club events and losing our platform. 1. Additionally, how does SGA determine which clubs to represent online? a. Discussion of applying campus-wide policies that Appropriations uses when allocating to club events, to PR b. Colin’s advice for current use i. Be more intentional with language ii. Plan ahead instead of operating on day-by-day basis iii.
