Chairperson Ramirez introduces the club before they come in to present 2. Young Democratic Socialists of America presents a. This club is a student chapter of Democratic Socialists of America b. There was no dedicated socialist group here at Hofstra.

Therefore, they have made one c. They have held events previously d. They are looking for SGA-recognition because of resources they can get. They would also like to continue their ties with other groups on campus e. They have been actively pursuing initiatives at Hofstra for students 3. Questions a. Senator Narain asks if they have before fundraised i. They state that they will be in the future b. Senator Friedman asks what resources the club gets from the national chapter

i. They state that they get pins, a banner for tabling, stickers, more of the smaller stuff c. Senator Harley asks if they are planning any events i. They are planning to work with democrats on campus d. Senator Algarin asks what organizations they would want to work with i. They state that they would like to continue working with QTPOCC and other multicultural organizations e. Senator Read asks if there are any fees to become a member i. They state that there is no fee to be a member on this campus but there is a 3-person minimum for the national DSA f. Senator Fegley asks about their mental health initiatives i. They want students to be able to access counselors and have accessible, affordable counseling g. Senator Stewart moves to extend speaking time by 2 minutes i. motion seconded ii. motion passes unanimously h. Chairperson Schmidt asks about their relationship with the national organization i. SGA recognition would not change that relationship i. Senator Stewart asks how many members are active i. They state around 10 to 15 j. Senator Kim asks if they would like to work with other politically active clubs on campus i. They state that they are open to the idea and have in the past 4. Traditional Debate a. Senator Algarin debates in favor i. states that they are seeking help from us and we should give it to them b. Chairperson Ramirez debates in favor i. states that their club does have the standard members needed according to precedent c. Senator Ismail debates in favor i. states that they are open to working with other groups on campus d. Chairperson Labrie debates against i. states that they have fairly low attendance with day-today meetings. They did say 10 to 15. And in the timespan that they have been a club, they have not gotten much attendance e. Chairperson Ramirez debates in favor i. states that they are a small club but they have been very present. They have been putting on events and collaborating with clubs with other political views. They are asking us for support. f. Senator Narain debates against i. states that they did not have any concrete tabling plans.

They did not talk about doing any event independently.

This week the Rules committee focused on grammar, capitalization, and changed articles wrongly placed. They also changed words like must to shall iii. Edits will be shown by a cross-out and in red so that changes are easily visible iv. This upcoming Monday, Rules Committee will be going over elections which includes turn-over timeline, eligibility for elections, election committees, and fall election timelines v. They will be having Cabinet position edits as time goes on Executive Board Reports A. President— A. Normandin i. A brief summary is given about how Senate works ii. A brief introduction is given of her role iii. We have hit the cap with this election iv. Retreat Plan 1. We are meeting at 3:30pm tomorrow and getting onto a bus at 4:45pm.

Hofstra University Student Government Association Two Thousand and Eighteen S.A.2018.83.003 Updating Club Confirmation Requirements

This excerpt is from page eighteen (18) of the Policy Series: V. RULES COMMITTEE A. ACTIVE CLUBS: A club shall be considered active by the Student Government Association if it is deemed active by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement (OSLE).

B. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION RECOGNITION: An active club may seek Student Government Association Recognition if it abides by the following guidelines: 1. Follow a constitution having been approved by the Rules Committee and Senate that contains the Student Government Association’s most current preamble.

2. Attend a Student Government Association Rules Committee meeting to review the club constitution.

3. Following approval of the club constitution by the Rules Committee, the club or organization must attend a Senate meeting to seek recognition.

4. Maintain a membership with no more than half being members of a currently banned or suspended Hofstra club or organization.

5. Maintain an updated and approved GetInvolvedHU profile.

6. Clubs and organizations shall hold a minimum of three (3) meetings with at least fifteen (15) members in attendance prior to seeking recognition by the Student Government Association.

The Rules Committee may shall require proof of such attendance in the form of attendance rosters for at least two (2) such meetings in that semester. a. The Rules Committee shall require the submission of these rosters at the meeting for club constitution review. b. The Rules Committee may shall may verify that the members present at said meetings match those are registered on the club or organization’s GetInvolvedHU page.

7. Prior to becoming eligible for recognition by the Student Government Association, organizations shall host at least one (1) fundraiser and/or event, per the discretion of the committee. The Rules Committee may request proof of such fundraisers/ events if deemed necessary.

8. Clubs and organizations recognized by the Student Government Association shall not be permitted to request funds at a weekly Appropriations Committee meeting within the same semester in which they are recognized. Newly recognized clubs and organizations are immediately eligible to submit a budget proposal for the upcoming semester.
