MONKEYPOX: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Monkeypox is a viral infection that does not usually cause serious illness. Health officials in the U.S. and around the world are monitoring the virus due to an increase in cases.

What are the symptoms? • A rash that looks like pimples or blisters that can appear inside the mouth or on the face, hands, chest, or genitals. • Other symptoms include fever, chills, sore muscles, headache, and fatigue.

How do you get monkeypox? • Skin-to-skin contact with a person who has a rash or scabs from monkeypox. This includes hugging, cuddling, a massage, or contact sports. • Contact with spit droplets or saliva during close conversation and kissing. • Sexual contact. • Touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox.

How can you protect yourself from monkeypox? • Avoid skin-to-skin contact with anyone who has a rash that looks like monkeypox. • Wash your hands often. • Do not share eating utensils or cups. • Wash your sheets, blankets, towels, and clothing often. • If you are sexually active, talk to your partner about recent illnesses. If you or your partner have recently been sick or have any symptoms of monkeypox, do not engage in sexual activities.

If you think you may have monkeypox: • Contact your healthcare provider, call Student Health Services at 516-463-6745, or visit hofstra.edu/medicat to schedule an appointment to get tested. • Cover any rash with clothing, gloves, or bandages. • Wear a mask. • Avoid touching anyone until you see a healthcare provider.
