The Hofstra Discovery Program is a dynamic, interactive program designed for incoming first-year and transfer students who wish to be actively engaged through advocacy, community service, outdoor exploration and reflection. Participants choose a path of discovery – outdoor exploration, leadership or community awareness – and are led in small groups by upper-level Discovery student leaders, staff and community partners who share the same passions for discovery. This is an opportunity to build connections, hone leadership skills, and begin the transition to college life and learning. Choose the path that best suits your interests:

What:

Discovery Path I

First-year and new transfer students.

When: Sunday-Wednesday, August 28-31, 2016

transition to college through their experience and participation in advocacy, adventure, service and reflection.

Who:

Community Awareness Students participating in this path will develop an understanding of how community organizations are managed and the strategies they use to empower communities to take action. Participants may: v Paint a local elementary school playground. v Serve the guests at a local soup kitchen. v Help maintain the facilities of a homeless shelter.

(Welcome Week begins September 1)

$ 400 for Community Awareness and Leadership. $500 for Outdoor Exploration. Fee includes on-campus housing, meals, transportation, T-shirt, water bottle and program expenses.

Please make checks/money orders payable to Hofstra University.

Discovery Path II

Outdoor Exploration Students participating in this path will explore the outdoors and challenge themselves by taking risks while reflecting on living life intentionally. Participants may: v Camp overnight and reflect at a New York state park. v Participate in outdoor activities, including kayaking, hiking and biking. v Visit a local Indian Reservation and learn about Long Island heritage.

Sample Schedule DAY 1 2-5 p.m. Residential students drop off belongings to fall room assignment 3-6 p.m. Move in to Hofstra Discovery Program housing (Commuters come straight here) 6-8 p.m. Opening Family Reception 8-11 p.m.

Discovery Path III

Leadership

Students participating in this path will develop an understanding of advocacy and discuss important current global issues with a focus on multiculturalism/diversity. Participants may: v Visit the United Nations in New York City. v Distribute food – that otherwise would have been thrown out – to those in need with Food Not Bombs. v Work with Hofstra’s Center for Civic Engagement.

Breakfast 8:30 a.m. Travel to destination 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Activity/program 1 p.m.

Lunch 2-5:30 p.m.

Activity/program 5:30 p.m.

Return to campus 6 p.m. Dinner and guest speakers 8 p.m.

Group work/discussions 9:30-11 p.m. Evening activities

DAY 4 7:30 a.m.

Breakfast 8:30 a.m. Residential students move back to fall room assignment 9:30-11:30 a.m. Group projects Noon-4 p.m. Lunch/presentations/closing celebration. The remainder of the day is free for participants. Residential students can get settled, relax and socialize with new friends on campus.
