NEW STADIA URBANISM

BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE THESIS

This thesis challenges traditional stadium design agendas in an urban context to explore the possibilities of creating a more lively and active destination. Stadia are some of the largest works of architecture in the world, as well as some of the most underutilized. Stadiums see large amounts of activity on scheduled sporting and entertainment days but otherwise sit unused. Through a mixed-use design, this thesis explores ways that a stadium can function throughout the day, the week, and beyond. With a focus on continuous circulation, the regular use of building and site as one is encouraged. A stadium that people may interact with 24 hours a day, 7 days a week creates a meaningful node within the urban fabric. This new model of urban stadia catering towards activity and interaction instead of spectating will help this typology be more complimentary to the needs of a city.

REACTIVATING THE BALL STATE VILLAGE

Project Type: Mixed-Use Student Housing

Site: Muncie, Indiana

Term: Fall 2019

Professor: Andrea Swartz

The goal of this project was to encourage revitalization for an area near and dear to the heart of Ball State students, the university village. This proposal focuses on a mixed-use student housing development, one primarily aimed at activating the public space and encouraging people to begin interacting with the village through this street corner gateway. Operable shading screens on the balcony of each unit give the student residents the ability to open and close their apartments to the activity of the front plaza as they please. By varying elevation points within the plaza, residents and visitors alike have a lot of opportunity to interact with the space in different ways, both through circulating around it and being stationary. The presence this building has on the corner of University and McKinley avenues provides a great flow of activity all throughout the day and night.

STOCKYARDS REC & WELLNESS

The Union Stockyards have a long history in the city of Chicago. The parameters of this project were to create a new health-focused building for the stockyards. Based on research of the surrounding neighborhood, a community recreation and wellness center was decided on for the proposed building program. There are no easily accessible physical therapy programs available within the Stockyards mile by mile, and the community does not have access to nutritional education programs. This proposed recreation and wellness center has a 1/8th mile suspended running track and small lap pool, as well as multiple private and semi-private exercise rooms. A demonstration kitchen, and private nutrition consultation rooms provide additional learning environments beyond that of physical fitness.

ALVERNON WAY STORAGE

Project Type: Self-Storage Facility

Site: Tucson, Arizona

Date: September 2022

Firm: SGW Architecture & Design

Alvernon Way is a 127,000 square foot new construction self-storage facility consisting of two climate controlled buildings and fourteen drive up outbuildings. A developer provided matrix was used to calculate the ideal number of storage units per size, and that number was tested and arranged within a set footprint for maximum efficiency of square footage. An exterior metal panel system in muted colors was selected to fit within the neighboring buildings in this area of Tucson.

103RD STREET STORAGE

103rd Street Storage is a 26,000 square foot 2-story new construction self-storage building. The site constraints for this project limited the building footprint making it necessary to design vertically and utilize two floors of storage lockers. Working with an established tenant brought a number of client specific design standards to the forefront of this project, including square footage efficiency numbers to be met and various branded elements.
