Snow

By h. Allen von der hoFF

imagine you’re at the luxurious St. Moritz ski resort in the Swiss Alps. you feel the brisk air as a light snow dances on your face. you hear the snow crackle below you. you put on your equipment and prepare for a great run. you pick up speed and do your best to avoid others and not to fall. you’re exhilarated as you swerve side to side. And when you’re done, you feel like you could do it all over again. however this is not skiing – this is Snow Polo. Polo in the

mountains? You bet!

O

ver the past 27-plus years, snow polo has slowly grown into an international sport. This year, the Federation of International Polo (FIP) sanctioned the first FIP Snow Polo World Cup which was held in Tianjin, China in February. Twelve teams from eleven nations participated in the event making it one of the largest polo events in the world. The team from Hong Kong overtook the South African entry to take the crown in a spirited championship match.

But let’s start at the beginning… In 1959, the St. Moritz Polo Club was founded to play on frozen Lake St. Moritz. The club’s first attempt to play in 1960 failed miserably and the club dismissed the idea. That was until the early 1980’s when the club re-launched the effort. They decided to use a larger ball made of inflatable plastic and colored a bright red or orange. A normal wooden polo ball was too heavy and sank in the 10 | Polo Northeast 2012

snow. After successful trials in 1984, the first Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow was held on Lake St. Moritz. Only two 4-man teams played and the event drew a mere 1,000 spectators. But the inaugural year was deemed a success. The next year the Cup added 2 more teams. The arena, which is smaller than a normal polo field, is surrounded by fencing or piled snow to keep the ball in play. The field of snow is packed as tight as possible for better traction. The ponies are shod with special shoes that include a thin rubber rim that vibrates to remove any snow and keep the hoof clear of ice. In addition, two square cogs are on the front of the shoe and a plate is attached on the back for better traction. The horse’s legs are also wrapped with fleece bandages and then covered with tendon boots to prevent injuries. Horse owners allow the ponies’ coats to grow longer to help protect them from the icy temperatures. © SPOT Werbung/Filip Zuan for St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow

Top: St. Moritz Polo Club. Inset: Special horse shoes used for snow polo.

The St. Moritz event is played every year in January and draws the jet-set crowd, numbering up to 15,000, from all corners of the world. For the first time in 2012 however, the event was cancelled due to poor ice conditions on Lake St. Moritz as a result of a very mild winter. But the Cup remains a high-profile event and will no doubt return with a roar in 2013. Not far from St. Moritz is the Klosters Resort in Hünenberg, Switzerland. The Alpine Polo Club established the annual Klosters Snow Polo in 2005 which is held the week before the St. Moritz event. Klosters draws business moguls, royalty (think Prince Charles) and of course, the beautiful people. This tournament has 3-man teams rather than the 4-man teams that St. Moritz allows. Actually, most snow polo tournaments use 3-man teams. The Klosters event is not only about polo, but provides entertainment from iconic pop legends and holds charity fundraising 12 | Polo Northeast 2012

events. The polo matches are held in the evening under the lights to allow visitors the opportunity to enjoy skiing and sight-seeing during the day. In the U.S., Aspen holds the only United States Polo Association sanctioned snow polo tournament. Started in 2000, the Beluga World Snow Polo Championship is held the 3rd weekend of every December. Top-notch talent plays in this 2-day tournament, including the likes of Nacho Figueras, Kris Kampsen, Juan Bollini, Nic Roldan and Tommy Biddle. The tournament is held on a frozen rugby field rather than a frozen lake. It attracts up to 1,000 spectators. Today, in addition to Switzerland and the U.S., the sport has spread to Austria, Argentina, China, France, Italy, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Slovakia. While it may only be 14 above zero with a 0 degree wind chill, bundle up, pour a glass of brandy and enjoy winter’s snow polo. PN

the summer pleasure of tailgating at a polo match may last just a few hours but it certainly feels like an idyllic weekend getaway. By its very nature, the sport embodies luxurious living and everyone can give it their own unique signature summer style. the choice is yours—the pampering Champagne and caviar dreams of the viP pavilion or the thirst quenching refreshment of home-made sangria and other family favorites at a field-side picnic. You are going to need to cover that 6-foot table so why not use this very colorful table linen with matching napkins? Keep in mind, when you cover a 6-foot table, make sure your table linen is at least 96" by 60" if you want it to go half way to the ground or 132" by 90" if you want it to hit the ground. irst stop is the website of your polo club to view the season’s schedule of teams, hospitality offerings, food concessions, seating areas and tailgate parking. Photos on the site will also give you a feeling for the ambiance, setting and attire. Bringing a vintage car with designated driver or limousine to park beside the field and tailgating from the trunk draped with a festive tablecloth and a silver standing wine bucket adds to the flair. LTI Worldwide Limousine (ltilimo.com) and their professional chauffeurs are often seen at the polo fields of the Northeast. If you are a refined outdoor-dining enthusiast, THE must-have is Goyard’s magnificent canvas and leather trunk-like picnic box fit for a king. This unexpected tailgate luxury (if you have to ask, custom orders begin at $24,000) will be the envy of any VIP enclosure. Parisbased Goyard has made cases, trunks and leather goods for French royalty since the 19th century. This picnic trunk (pictured left) serves four and Courtesy La Maison Goyard includes a 28-piece set—embroidered linen towels, biscuit tins and casters for oil and vinegar, silver cutlery, porcelain plates, crystal tumblers, etc. In the United States, Goyard can be purchased at Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman. You can also visit goyard.com. David M. Handy, noted trendsetting event designer with offices in New York City, Boston and Newport is planning private polo events this season at Myopia Polo in Hamilton, MA, Newport Polo, Greenwich Polo Club in Connecticut, Palm Beach Polo in Florida to name a few (davidmhandy.com). A signature presentation at David’s polo events is the French art of sabrage, opening a bottle of Champagne with a ceremonial saber as was done by Napoleon’s cavalry in Madame Clicquot’s vineyards. As Handy points out, Champagne is a party but sabering takes it to a more festive level, especially at polo. He finds that each polo club has its own personality from Myopia Polo, the iconic oldest active polo club in America celebrating its 124th year, to Greenwich Polo Club in CT celebrating its 30th season. Polo clubs have catering companies and special offerings, vendors and sponsor events that help in planning your entertainment. As an example, at Myopia Polo, the designated caterer is Timothy S. Hopkins Catering (tshcatering.com). Chef Timothy Hopkins is able to create a memorable polo Champagne luncheon, barbeque or seafood feast—the

choice is yours. Chef Hopkins will again be planning the annual polo reception to accompany complimentary cigars in the VIP Pavilion at Myopia on September 2 for the L.J. Peretti Montecristo Cup. For over 140 years L.J. Peretti Tobacconists has been a world famous institution in Boston. For information on the event contact Stephen Willett (ljperetti.com). PN

he sporting event that epitomizes a quintessential summer afternoon in the Hamptons will return with the 16th Anniversary Season of Bridgehampton Polo Club. Set once again to take place at Two Trees Farm for six consecutive Saturdays from July 21st through August 25th, a selective group of Hamptons tastemakers will be invited to take in the thrills of high-goal polo action. Town and Country Magazine and Ferrari North America, both sponsors of the upcoming season, will host the spectacular opening day match and festivities. Last season, the club made some changes to scale back the Saturday event in size and return to the days where the afternoon was centered around the polo match itself. This season, guests will find an even more understated setting, lending itself perfectly to the sumptuous ambiance. VIP guests will be folded in luxury as they experience a pre-match reception replete with summery cocktails, afternoon tea and light hors d’oeuvres. Field-side garden areas, including the Davidoff Cigar Garden, will give patrons an unparalleled view of all the action. With polo as the ultimate backdrop, field side tailgate tents serve as the perfect place to entertain. Unique picnic baskets, conceived by Hamptons hot spot Tutto Il Giorno, will be available for purchase, mixing high goal with haute cuisine. The famed restaurant has signed on as official caterer for the entire 6-week season. Also new this season, International Polo Star and Ralph Lauren Model Nacho Figueras is now a partner in Bridgehampton Polo Club with Co-Founder and Owner Peter Brant. “As the ambassador to the sport, Nacho has done a tremendous job in bringing more attention to polo worldwide than ever before,“ said Brant. “We look forward to the exciting potential the partnership presents.”

www.bhpolo.com

“The Hamptons is a very special place for me,” said Figueras. “Many of my close friends are here and it’s where my family and I love to be in the summer. I am thrilled to be involved with Bridgehampton Polo Club from an ownership standpoint and I believe the club has great potential for growth.” Last season, the club brought in veteran polo publicist and event organizer Shamin Abas to take over the Saturday afternoon operation. The changes Abas made created quite a favored buzz in the media, and amongst the close-knit, hard-to-tap Hamptonites who enjoy a low-key environment. In fact, the news even caught the attention of The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, which awarded the club the coveted Five Star Diamond Award at the completion of the season. With sponsors Ferrari North America and Town and Country Magazine for opening day and Piaget as the official 2012 season timekeeper with other season sponsors including Zen Air, Davidoff, SmartWater, Quintessentially and Hamptons Magazine, Bridgehampton Polo Club promises a season of unparalleled luxe entertainment and high-goal polo action. he iconic seaside destination is set to once again host polo, music festivals, the Ocean State Tall Ships Festival (July 6 – 9) and the America’s Cup World Series returning after an almost 20 year absence (June 23 – July 1). The crown jewel for many polo aficionados is the 21st Newport International Polo Series at Glen Farm in Portsmouth, RI. These matches draw high-profile boldfacers from their yachts to the polo grounds including legendary photographer Bruce Weber who recently shot the Newport Polo players and their ponies for Ralph Lauren’s “Big Pony” fragrance campaign. Those who have played at Newport Polo include Nacho Figueras, Ron Furguson, father of the Duchess of York, and members of polo dynasties like the families Domecq of Spain, Guerrand-Hermes of France and Dorignac of Argentina. Every Saturday from June through September at 5PM (4PM in September) spectators journey beneath a canopy of 130-year old linden trees on appropriately named Linden Lane and the adventure begins. The gates open early (1PM or 2:30PM) to welcome tailgaters or revelers to the hospitality area offering a full service bar and food concessions. 24 | Polo Northeast 2012

Guests may sip and socialize with celebrities and the international set prior to the match. Choices include the VIP Polo Lounge, an all-inclusive experience at select City Series matches, or the Subscribers Enclosure which offers box seating at tables under the tent or on the lawn, with beverage service from the Twisted Pony Bar, a raw bar, crudités, sandwiches, etc. There is plenty of shopping in the tents with boutiques offering tempting signature handbags, artwork, jewelry, pet items as well as Newport International Polo Series official apparel & souvenir merchandise in the Polo Pro Shop. Attracting visitors and fans alike from Manhattan to Boston, there is a match between Newport and Boston on June 23 and Newport & New York on July 28. So with Newport welcoming more New Yorkers this season than ever, it comes as no surprise to find actor Sean Ringgold (One Life to Live, The Smurfs, Notorious, American Gangster) getting in on the action. In addition to his work on the big screen, Sean is an avid extreme sport aficionado (skydiving, scuba diving, jet skiing, surfing, skiing and snowboarding to name a few) who’s looking forward to experiencing the Subscribers Enclosure at Newport Polo as well as viewing the America’s Cup high-tech catamaran racing and the Tall Ships Parade of Sail. “Newport is the perfect summer

playground. Taking in these unique sporting events and being a part of the electricity is an incredible experience I plan to a share with my friends this year and hopefully annually,” says Ringgold. A major part of the grand allure of Newport has always been its status as the ultimate social playground with its luxurious hotel accommodations and delectable dining experiences now more stylish than ever. Relive Newport’s Gilded Age at Vanderbilt Grace Hotel built in 1909 by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and The Chanler at Cliff Walk built in 1873 by the husband of the great granddaughter of the first U. S. multi-millionaire, John Jacob Astor. Vanderbilt Grace’s fine dining restaurant, Muse by Jonathan Cartwright (who is also Executive Chef at Vanderbilt Grace’s sister-property, The White Barn Inn in Kennebunk, Maine), is offering a “Vintage Vanderbilt” dinner inspired by a 1912 family menu. The elegant oceanfront boutique hotel, The Chanler, offers the award-winning cuisine of the Spiced Pear and the ocean view for relaxing with a cocktail and light dining on the Cliff Walk Terrace, a Newport “must”. Noted hot-spots for celeb sightings are Clarke Cooke House on Banister Wharf and The Porch (literally overlooking the harbor). Also frequented by the chic and flirty set, visit 41˚ North where yachts dock along this sleek new contemporary hotel and marina nestled within Newport Harbor replete with both an outdoor bar and restaurant. The Inn on Castle Hill boasts a dramatic water view setting and charming accommodations. Book a night in what was once the Agassiz Mansion or one of their hopelessly romantic Beach Cottages but definitely don’t miss the Inn’s Sunday Jazz Brunch. It’s known to be one of the best in town. However you choose to stay and play, one thing is for certain: Newport delivers on its promise of high production values for your escape. Whether it’s heralding horseplay or harborside hijinks, the choice, enviably, is yours. PN

The current construction taking place on the Governors’ Island playing field required Veuve Clicquot to find a new location—the brand was committed to finding a space accessible to city dwellers to host the event, which has become a staple of the summer season. After carefully surveying 27 locations in the Greater New York area, including parks, beaches, fields and islands, Veuve Clicquot was pleased to call Liberty State Park its new home.

Throwing out the ceremonial toss-in, Rachel Zoe commenced the festivities with husband Rodger Berman and baby Skyler. Nacho Figueras led team Black Watch to victory in a 9–7 match beating team Nespresso in an exciting game. Bold-faced attendees included Zoe Saldana, Minka Kelly, Padma Lakshmi, Leslie Bibb, Jennifer Morrison, Jessica Stam, Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebl, Lo Bosworth, Matthew Rhys, Hilary Rhoda, Coco Rocha, Alek Wek, Tiffani Amber Thiessen, Sasha Cohen, Jason Wu, Wes Gordon, Dree Hemingway, and more.

The VIP tent boasted an “urban garden” theme, which was inspired by the lush setting of Liberty State Park. Thousands of bottles of Veuve Clicquot Champagne were consumed, and in keeping with the garden theme, fresh farm-to-table bites (all locally sourced from New York and New Jersey) were prepared by Silkstone, New York’s most creative culinary experts, Ben Towill and Phil Winser, hailing from the highly buzzed dining destinations, The Fat Radish in New York City and Ruschmeyer’s in Montauk. While New York’s finest and the fashion elite were mingling in the VIP Marquee, Veuve Clicquot continued to flow and DJ Reach played the hottest tunes which brought everyone out to the dance floor. 32 | Polo Northeast 2012

Synonymous with flutes of champagne and topnotch fashion, guests of the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic sported classic polo style—dresses and hats for women and summer suits for the gentlemen. To shade the ladies from the daytime sun, Veuve Clicquot provided the new custom, limited-edition Veuve Clicquot-yellow parasol, created in collaboration with celebrated parasol maker, Penelope Parasols, the perfect accessory for an afternoon of polo-watching and champagne-sipping. PAto Argentina’s national Sport By h. Allen von der hoFF

A

rgentine polo players have long been known to be among the world’s elite. Adolfo Cambiaso of the Argentine team La Dolfina is considered by many polo experts to be among the best polo players in the world, garnering three world championships since 1987. But to the surprise of many, polo is not the national sport of Argentina. A sport called “Pato” is. Also known as “Horse-Ball”, and unlike polo, Pato uses no mallets while on horseback. The game combines features from both polo and basketball. Two teams, comprised of four players each on horseback, compete to grab a ball with six handles and then score by throwing it through a vertical 3 foot ring atop an 8 foot pole. The match consists of six periods, eight minutes long each. The team with the most goals is the obvious winner. The ball is referred to as the duck. Pato is Spanish for duck. In its early form, the game used a live duck inside a basket with its head sticking out as the “ball”. The players vied to grab the duck by its head and carry it to a designated destination. This might explain why ducks have generally lousy dispositions… Today’s ball is made of leather that is inflated to roughly 17¾ inches in diameter and weighing about 2½ pounds. Pato has been documented as far back as the 17th 42 | Polo Northeast 2012

century with numerous instances of violence. The live duck wasn’t the only victim of harm. Players experienced injury and death from being trampled by their ponies. Because of the accelerated adrenaline the players experienced in the intense competition, some players lost their lives due to knife fights between rivals. The local Catholic churches decreed that Pato players who died as the result of the game were to be denied Christian burial. Eventually, in the mid-19th century, the game was banned due to its extreme risk to its participants. Then, in 1937, Alberto del Castillo Posse drew up a new set of rules for the game and organized a Pato exhibition in LaPlata. The next year, Governor Manuel Fresco removed the ban and a new age of Pato began. Those rules now comprise what consists of today’s Pato game. Pato gained in stature and popularity and in 1953, Argentine President Juan Perón declared Pato to be his country’s national sport. The game demands a combination of expert horsemanship, extreme agility and superior body strength by its competitors. During a Pato match, the player who has control of the ball must have his right arm outstretched while riding, daring his opponents to steal the ball while he attempts to score a goal.

If a rival is able to grab a handle on the ball, the maneuver is called a “tug”. Both players are then not allowed to sit in their saddle, but rather must stand in their stirrups while holding the reins with one hand. For the spectators, the tug, known as Cinchada, is the most exhilarating part of Pato. If the controlling player does not offer the ball with outstretched arm while attempting to score, a penalty known as Negada is called for refusal. Pato reached France and Spain in 1970. Playing this sport in these countries made it necessary to change its rules to adapt to European horses’ space and cost conditions. Thus, Pato came to be called “Horseball”, as it is currently referred to when being played in most European countries, Israel, the USA, Canada and Brazil. In 2006, the Argentine Pato Federation and the International Horse-Ball Federation agreed to change the Horseball rules to make them fit Pato applicable rules. Therefore, this sport finally came to be known as “Pato-Horseball”. The International Horse-Ball Federation holds annual tournaments with Portugal, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, England, China, Brazil, Canada and yes, the USA, among the countries participating. Located 65 miles northwest of New York City on nearly 500 acres, Chuck has built a polo mecca for club members that play on the 4 fullsize tournament fields and practice field. Blue Sky offers stabling facilities for 60 horses and pasture turn-out for 100 more. This year, Chuck is focusing on bringing in new young players and involving entire families in the sport of polo – whether it be playing the sport or, for family members that do not play polo, organizing summer social events that everyone in the club enjoys. Chuck has always loved polo and every year he improves the Blue Sky facilities while keeping member costs down. Last year, a new clubhouse and deck were added for the members and the frequent après-polo Asados.

hen New York Herald mogul James Gordon Bennett brought polo to America from the Hurlingham Club in England in 1876, the country was in the middle of an embarrassing episode. While America was celebrating its Centennial in Philadelphia, Gordon’s friend, Colonel George Armstrong Custer, celebrated cavalryman from the Civil War, had just got himself killed by Lakota and Cheyenne horsemen on the American Plains. Gordon had been promoting the Colonel’s articles in several eastern publications. Without Custer to promote, Bennett shifted his focus to a sport he saw while visiting England. Polo had been imported there from India seven years prior. Bennett brought mallets and balls back to New York and sent an associate to Texas to buy horses to bring to New York. What followed was an amazing history of American polo clubs, international matches, in Great Gatsby settings with our sons and daughters galloping into the legends of American folklore. From the late 1800’s to the 1980’s, the sport enjoyed a run of flowing fast-paced games that were not only embraced by polo fans, but by sports fans across the nation. After Mr. Bennett got the ball rolling in New York, clubs started popping up in Boston, Buffalo and Philly. In 1886, England, still prickly from the Battle of New Orleans seventy one years prior, challenged Thomas Hitchcock, Foxhall Keene and whatever rag tag polo team they could mount, for a series of polo games in America. The game was played in the resort of Newport, Rhode Island with every type of horse drawn conveyance known to man crowded around the field. The game was started by a race to midfield where Foxhall Keene beat Captain Little to the ball and rattled home a goal in twenty four seconds as the band played Yankee Doodle. It proved to be the high water mark for the American team as England prevailed in a series of games which led to the servants, recently arrived from England and Ireland, jumping on the carriages and cheering their home country. The Americans suffered a lack of team work and inferior horses. A 1902 rematch, now called the Westchester Cup, was again won by the English. This time, the Americans learned their lessons well, having realized that some of England’s polo horses were bred on the American frontier by English breeders. In 1909, Harry Payne Whitney, an obscenely wealthy and talented polo player, formed an American team. Whitney took the reins as team captain of the American team providing 28 horses for his players while several American players donated horses for the national cause. In a controversial move, Whitney replaced icon Foxhall Polo Northeast 2012 | 47

Keene on the team with a young upstart player named Devereux Milburn. The American team emerged victorious and the “Big Four” of Whitney, Milburn, and the Waterbury brothers were lionized across sports pages back in the States. America fielded winning teams the next two matches in 1911 and 1913 until Britain won the Cup back in 1914, which was to be the end of England’s prominence as a polo power. In 1921, a young Tommy Hitchcock Jr. was brought on the American team only to be cut out of the first game by Milburn. After a brief suspension from the Westchester Cup, Hitchcock returned to the American team, which started a legendary career where the young man captained winning teams in four of the next five meetings between England and the United States. He became part of the greatest team ever put together in the United States. They were J. Watson Webb, Tommy Hitchcock Jr., Malcolm Stevenson, and Devereux Milburn with Louis Stroddard as an alternate. This team was never beaten. While the United States and England thought they had the world cornered in the polo market, a third country, Argentina, took a world tour in 1922 and beat both countries at their own game. Suddenly a serious rivalry sprouted up and the crowds were there to watch it. Forty thousand people turned out to watch the International matches on Long Island. In 1928, Tommy Hitchcock led the United States over the Argentines in a series of three games held in Meadowbrook. Since then, Argentina has pretty much dominated international polo. Back in the States, however, a rivalry between polo players east and west of the Mississippi began, and in 1933, the cream of Texas and California took on the East 48 | Polo Northeast 2012

Coast blue bloods in Chicago in what was called the EastWest games. Trains of fans rolled into the Windy City to witness a series of three games. With the great Tommy Hitchcock on the east team and the rising star of Texan Cecil Smith on the western team, the game drew attention from newspapers all over the United States. The first game was played in front of twenty five thousand fans, where the West upset the powerful East team in a rough exhausting six periods. In the three legendary games, horses and men both pushed themselves to their limits. Hitchcock brought his team back for a victory in the second game that tied the series up at one victory each setting the stage for the third and final match that was won by the west which rocked the national polo scene. What came out of the match was a changing of the guard in American polo. Cecil Smith would rise to the rating of ten goals and Tommy Hitchcock would briefly go down from ten to nine. Smith would become one of the great American players of all time, maintaining a ten goal handicap for over twenty years. Tommy Hitchcock Jr. died a hero’s death testing a fighter plane in World War Two. Never again would the Americans dominate world polo. An American team managed to upset the Argentines in the Argentine Open in the late thirties but that was about it. The Cup of the Americas, played between the United States and Argentina, was won in 1928 and 1931 by the United States, but the last six meetings have been won by the Argentines. In 1979, one of the great upsets off our polo history unfolded at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club. Tommy Wayman, Red Armour, Bart Evans, and Joe Barry playing as Texas, defeated the Argentine team of Juan Carlos Harriot, Horacio Araya, Celestino Garrós, and Ernesto Trotz, in one of the greatest polo games ever played. The game, which

Š 2012 Matthew J. Atanian Photography

ended in overtime, could have been scripted in Hollywood. It left horses, men and fans in the state of utter exhaustion. Tommy Wayman’s mare, ridden by Bart Evans, collapsed in the second half. For several anxious minutes, the crowd held its collective breath when she dropped, only to receive a standing ovation when she rose and gave a good shake in front of the crowd. It was a game for the ages.

WAG N E R

The fact remains that in the last seventy years; only four American polo players have risen to the rank of ten goals. In that same period, the Argentines have produced close to thirty rated at ten. Before this time the Americans dominated. One problem is money. When Tommy Hitchcock Jr. was asked by a reporter which was the first thing to go in a polo player, as in legs in a fighter, or eyes in a marksman, Hitchcock replied money. Today, the state of the American polo player is a case for hard survival. There are a handful of gritty American survivors who have clawed their way into the ranks of high goal professionals against the odds. Players like Tommy Biddle of Aiken, Owen Rinehart of Charlottesville, Adam Snow of Boston and Mike Azzarro of Texas; the last three having achieved a ten goal status. Two American women, Vicki Armour and Sunny Hale broke the gender barrier in American high goal and played as professionals on an even field with the men. The state of Polo in America is still stronger than ever with bigger clubs, more members, and patrons who spend money on polo facilities, the likes of which have never been seen on this continent. pproximately one hour from New York City, Haviland Hollow Farm offers premier polo and equestrian facilities framed by one thousand acres of protected land. Included on the grounds are two tournament polo fields, two half-mile sand exercise tracks, an indoor polo arena, first-class stables and a stick and ball field. Founded by Sam Ramirez Jr., the 250-acre parcel that comprises Haviland Hollow was once one of Patterson’s primary cattle farms. The existing barn and milk house have been carefully restored and are now some of the farm’s key fixtures. The world-class polo facilities are available to players of all levels. Haviland Hollow Farm has received rave reviews from the polo and equestrian community during its first two years, developing a strong following of professionals, students and fans from around the world. The farm, conveniently located one hour from mid-town Manhattan and thirty minutes from Greenwich, CT, has become known for the incredible quality of its facilities, its fun-loving people and family friendly environment. The Polo Club boasts a year-round polo program with two top-notch polo fields and an indoor polo arena. The summer polo season is from May until October and has levels ranging from 4 to 14 goal polo for its members. The winter season is from November until March and play is from beginner to intermediate levels. Matches are played on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, throughout the year.

www.nycpolo.com

The club offers a lessons program for beginner and intermediate players to learn and improve the game of polo. “Many of our students have gone on to play matches outside of the club and received MVP and compliments on the quality of their play. We break down the game into horsemanship, hitting, playing and rules skills. Once our students learn the basics we encourage them to improve”, says owner and two goal rated player, Sam Ramirez Jr. The Equestrian program is run by Barbara Fillipelli, a high level trainer of Hunter/Jumper, Dressage and Eventing disciplines. She has a strong following and a great record in competitions. The equestrian facilities include a 200 x 90 indoor arena, 225 x 125 outdoor arena, riding trails and a nice turnout on 250 acres. In addition, the farm has two 1/2 mile sand exercise tracks that both the polo and equestrian clients like to use to exercise, ride or to cool down their horses. The social aspects of Haviland Hollow Farm offer horse enthusiasts an opportunity to come watch scheduled games and tournaments, as well as attend charity matches in September. The fields are well designed for an afternoon of relaxing on the hill while picnicking & viewing a match. Those interested in learning and taking lessons for both polo and equestrian are encouraged to email the owner and his team through the website. The club has enjoyed successfully introducing people to this challenging and exciting sport in a unique way, having already produced many players that started with little or no prior experience. PN

POLO’S

LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS n

The oldest royal polo square is the 16th century Gilgit Polo Field, Pakistan.

n

The highest polo ground in the world is on the Deosai Plateau Baltistan, Pakistan at 14,000 feet.

n

Polo must be played right-handed. Left-handed play was ruled out in 1975 for safety reasons. However, some players were grandfathered in at the time and there are still a couple of players that are playing lefthanded. Mariano Aguerre, who achieved a 10 goal rating, is naturally left-handed but plays right-handed and has won the Argentine Open and the U.S. Open.

n

Each player in high goal (top level professional) tournaments uses a fresh pony for each chukka because the game is played at a very fast pace, with the horses galloping much of the time. In club games, ponies may play 2 chukkas in a match.

n

The oldest living pologround of the world is the Imphal Polo Ground in Manipur State established by the British in India. The history of this pologround is contained in the royal chronicle “Cheitharol Kumbaba” starting from AD 33. Lieutenant Sherer, the father of modern polo, visited the state and played on this polo ground in the 1850s. Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India visited the state in 1901 and measured the pologround as 225 yards long and 110 yards wide.

n

The oldest polo club in the world still in existence is the Calcutta Polo Club (1862).

n

The surface of a polo field requires careful and constant grounds maintenance to keep the surface in good playing condition. During half-time of a match, spectators are invited to go onto the field to participate in a polo tradition called “divot stomping”, which has developed to not only help replace the mounds of earth (divots) that are torn up by the horses’ hooves, but to afford spectators the opportunity to walk about and socialize.

n

Polo is not played exclusively on horseback. Polo variants, played mainly for recreational or touristic purposes include canoe polo, cycle polo, camel polo, elephant polo, golfcart polo, Segway polo, BMX polo, yak polo and water polo.

n

Buzkashi involves two teams of horsemen, a dead goat and few rules. It is played in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is the national game of Afghanistan and a possible precursor of polo.

n

Pato is a game played on horseback where a ball is handled and points are scored by shooting it through a high net. The sport is a combination of polo, rugby, and basketball.

n

Horseball is a game similar to Pato.

n

Kokpar is a Kazakh game similar to Buzkashi.

n

Polocrosse is another game played on horseback, a cross between polo and lacrosse.
