GEORGE S. PATTON AND POLO –

Leading the Charge on the Field

Written by H. Allen von der Hoff

W

hile many know of General George S. Patton’s love of horses and of his exploits in World War II, few are aware that the athletic and former Olympian (Stockholm Olympics, 1912, taking fifth in the Pentathlon) loved playing the game of polo. According to some, he played the game not only with great passion, but as if he were going to war. Patton was first introduced to polo during his training as a cadet at West Point where he was commissioned to be in the U.S. 15th Calvary. As a lieutenant, he married a wealthy daughter of a Massachusetts millionaire. Because of his newfound wealth, he was able to retain a considerable stable of polo ponies. Though his career demanded that he had to move about the country to various Army posts, he was able to keep the ponies near him.

“…no man can stay cool in battle unless he is habituated to the exhilarating sense of physical peril. No sport is so good in this respect, as polo”

He once wrote “…no man can stay cool in battle unless he is habituated to the exhilarating sense of physical peril. No sport is so good in this respect, as polo”. Patton played the game aggressively and, as a result, suffered multiple injuries including concussions, broken bones and lacerations. Once, while playing at the Myopia Hunt/Polo Club in Hamilton, MA, he was hit in the head by a mallet which left a severe gash. Bloodied, he took a brief timeout to clean the wound and actually returned to the field to finish play, despite having a throbbing head. Patton played polo throughout his military career. His best playing days were in Hawaii, where in 1936 he played in the Inter-Island Polo Championships. Patton captained the Army team against an Oahu team. Patton was constantly yelling and cursing, where not only the spectators could hear, but the commanding general of the U.S. Army Hawaiian Department could as well. Major. Gen Hugh Drum ordered the match suspended and relieved Patton as captain of the Army team, citing behavior unbecoming an officer. (It is said he was actually very jealous of Patton). When hearing of the dismissal, the Oahu team refused to return to the field unless Patton was reinstated immediately. Drum lost the face-down and play was resumed. Patton moved on with his career, while the general’s faded away. Polo was one of many sporting events in which Patton partook. The former Olympian also, and for obvious reasons, was quite an equestrian. His love of horses spanned the globe, even in battle. In 1946, a 15.4 acre park in South Hamilton, MA, donated to the city by the Myopia Hunt Club, was renamed the General George S. Patton Memorial Park. The park still exists today, featuring one of his famous World War II Sherman tanks. PN POLO Northeast 2014 | 11

On May 31, 2014 and for the seventh year, Veuve Clicquot welcomed more than 7,000 New Yorkers and guests, celebrities and polo enthusiasts to enjoy a beautiful day at Liberty State Park to celebrate the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. World-renowned polo player Nacho Figueras, his wife Delfina Blaquier and Veuve Clicquot U.S. President Vanessa Kay hosted the afternoon fête complete with an exciting polo match, chic summer fashion and, of course, flutes of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label and Rosé, all enjoyed with stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

T

his stylish event began in New York City in 2008, when it marked the return of polo after nearly a 70 year lapse. This is the third year the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic was held at the beautiful Liberty State Park, a stone’s throw away from Manhattan. This year’s event was held in support of City Harvest, a non-profit organization dedicated to help feed nearly two million New Yorkers facing hunger each year. City Harvest has been committed to feeding New York’s hungry men, women and children for more than 30 years. As part of the partnership with the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, City Harvest completed a “food rescue” at the event and collected all leftover food to deliver to local community food programs in the area. The chic crowd that enjoyed the beautiful Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic included Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o and her brother Peter Nyong’o, Dakota Johnson, Olivia Munn, Aaron Paul and wife Lauren Parsekian and Behati Prinsloo, among others. In a very close match, team Black Watch beat team Veuve Clicquot 12 to 10, with Nacho Figueras scoring six goals and winning the MVP award. In addition to the thrilling polo match, event highlights included a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem sung by Broadway performer Stephen Wallem and the ceremonial first ball toss to kick-off the match was thrown in by model Behati Prinsloo. With sunny skies, a light breeze and an exciting polo match enjoyed with flutes of champagne, the Seventh Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic was one to remember. CLUB POLO NACIONAL Compiled by H. ALLEN VON DER HOFF Images courtesy of CLUB POLO NACIONAL

C

lub Polo Nacional was formed in 2002 by a group of polo players from the Montreal and Ottawa areas who were interested in encouraging new members and beginning players as well as supporting charitable causes through polo exhibition matches. The Club’s polo season generally runs from mid-May to mid-September. Club games and tournaments are played each Saturday and Sunday and club games and chukkars are also played on Thursday evenings. Polo matches generally range from 4 to 8 goals. Practice chukkars and coaching are generally played Tuesday evenings. Most weekend games and tournaments are followed by a casual barbeque, lunch or Argentine asado at the Club with members rotating to organize the post-polo festivities. Club Polo Nacional organizes

at least one major charity polo match each year. In 2014, Polo avec Coeur, will occur on Saturday August 9 and proceeds will benefit the Montreal Heart Institute and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at the Toronto General Hospital. Smaller tournaments will be held throughout the season. Club Polo Nacional will be hosting a Polo Canada Tournament in August with visiting teams from other clubs, primarily from Ontario and Manitoba. In addition to the major events, the Club has six smaller club tournaments during the polo season which are sponsored by Club members and give members the opportunity to play in a competitive tournament situation. The Club uses three wellmaintained, irrigated polo fields located near the towns of Hudson,

St.-Lazare, Ste. Marthe and Rigaud, approximately 45 minutes from downtown Montreal or an hour from Ottawa. Stabling for 80 horses, paddocks, a 5/8 mile all weather exercise track and horses for lease are available. Lessons are available from professional players including umpire clinics (coordinated through the United States Polo Association), hitting clinics and player clinics at the beginning of the season. During the off-season, members still have occasional social get-togethers – ranging from dinners to skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa and broomball in the winter. The Club is a member club of both Polo Canada and the United States Polo Association. All Club members are members of Polo Canada and most are also members of the USPA. www.nacionalpolo.com PN POLO Northeast 2014 | 29

COWDRAY PARK POLO CLUB, MIDHURST, ENGLAND 3,255 MILES FROM BOSTON, MA Cowdray Park Polo Club has become known worldwide as the Home of British Polo due to its long and illustrious history. Around 450 matches are played during Cowdray Park’s busy polo season which starts at the end of April and continues until the end of September. The club hosts the England team every May for the St. Regis International Cup, which signals the start of the high goal season. Polo was brought to Cowdray Park by The Hon. Harold Pearson (later 2nd Viscount Cowdray) in 1910. The Second World War saw polo face extinction with the demise of the cavalry regiments which had been the source of most players. Grounds were plowed up to support the war effort and the majority of ponies turned to other uses. After the war, John Cowdray, the 3rd Viscount, was almost single-handedly responsible for the revival of polo in the UK. In 1956 John Cowdray launched the Cowdray Park Gold Cup. Played for the British Open Polo Championship, the fabulous golden trophy is the one which every polo player wants to win during his career. The Gold Cup for the British Open is ranked alongside the Argentine and US Open tournaments in world significance. www.cowdraypolo.co.uk

MOSCOW POLO CLUB, TSELEEVO, RUSSIA 4,496 MILES FROM BOSTON, MA The Moscow Polo Club was founded in 2003 and returned polo to Russia for the first time in nearly 100 years. At the turn of the 20th century, polo was quite popular in Russia, but after the revolution, the tradition was broken. In 2005 the club was bought by Alexis Rodzianko who is American of Russian heritage. It now proudly hosts the Russian Open Championship. In 2009, the club moved to the Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club 25 miles north of Moscow. With its re-emergence, the club was fortunate to have had the guidance of two grand masters from Argentina — Hernan and Alejandro Traverso. It has 2 regulation size fields designed and built by Alejandro Battro with irrigation and underground drainage, a practice field, a half mile track, an outdoor arena and a barn for 80 horses (40 indoor, 40 outdoor). It is a neighbor with the Tseleevo Golf Club which boasts a Jack Nicklaus Signature 18 hole championship golf course, clubhouse, restaurant, downhill ski club in the winter and a boutique hotel. www.britishpoloday.com/poloteams/moscow-polo-club

THAI POLO & EQUESTRIAN CLUB, PATTAYA, THAILAND 8,592 MILES FROM BOSTON With its fine facilities and high-profile trainers, Thai Polo & Equestrian Club in Thailand has quickly established itself as a leader in the field. Polo has experienced a surge in popularity in Thailand in recent years – thanks in no small measure to the impressive Thai Polo & Equestrian Club. Set in the beach resort of Pattaya, the club boasts internationally recognized facilities for polo and equestrian events along with one of the world’s greatest trainers, Rege Ludwig. It’s a combination that draws enthusiasts and competitors from across the globe. Thai Polo & Equestrian Club has grown in size and stature since it was founded in 2005 by Harald Link, President of South East Asian Equestrian Federation, and Nunthinee Tanner. They set about to revitalize the game by creating a world-class polo club in the beach resort of Pattaya. Thai Polo & Equestrian Club is located just 93 miles from Bangkok. It stretches over 800 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, which include three full-sized polo pitches and a range of other facilities, including a newly built horse hospital. “We now have more than 230 horses and the best trainer in the world,” says Harald. “Rege Ludwig is a real asset to the club because he not only works with our guests but also trains other members of staff up to his exemplary standards.” Each year, hundreds of polo players from countries as far ranging as Argentina, Australia, China, England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore converge on the club to participate in its three prestigious tournaments: Pink Polo, Thai Polo Open and Beach Polo. www.thai-polo-club.com PN Photos courtesy Thai Polo & Equestrian Club

n 1981 businessman Peter M. Brant purchased approximately 1500 acres of northern Greenwich farmland known as Conyers Farm. Conyers Farm was a quiet, understated apple orchard with a small roadside fruit stand on North Street. In this year, the Greenwich Polo Club (GPC) was established on approximately 60 acres of this parcel. In the early years, the GPC was comprised of two regulation sized polo fields, field one and field two, an elegant stone clubhouse and a magnificent Victorianstyle grandstand. The latter is a reproduction of the early 20th century grandstand at the Saratoga racetrack. Brant was the catalyst and architect for the GPC according to Managing Director, Leighton Jordan. Brant’s highest polo rating was seven and during this period he held the distinction of being the highest rated amateur patron in the United States. He is also credited for breeding great polo ponies and for being a driving force behind the growth of polo from the 1980’s to present. The Greenwich Polo Club is internationally recognized for its roster of legendary teams and players. World renowned player Mariano Aguerre, whose highest rating was 10, has played for Brant’s White Birch team since it was formed. The GPC is considered by many the mecca for high goal polo in the Northeast United States.

The GPC, now entering its 33rd season, proudly associates itself with local and international charities. Last season for example, the club “… was selected by the third in line for the British crown, Prince Harry, to host the 3rd Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup benefiting the impoverished children in Lesotho, Africa.” Other notable charities include Paul Newman’s The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp serving children with serious medical illnesses and Virginia’s House of Hope “bringing hope, comfort and nourishment to children in need in New York City and the surrounding regions.”

September 8, 2013 was a magnificent bucolic fall day on Conyers Farm. The fluffy cumulus clouds superimposed onto a rich blue sky, typical of a September day here, hovered over the perfectly manicured polo fields of Kentucky blue grass. The caterers were busy preparing for their respective guests. The scoreboard and sound system were being tested for what was to be the final game of the season. The flags, representing the players’ respective countries were being hung, all in preparation for the prestigious Royal Salute Jubilee Cup polo match that was to be hosted on this day. The cars began rolling in, as did the trailers carrying the prized polo ponies. Later, the players would arrive. The attendance was extraordinary this day. The tents, picnic areas and grandstand were filled to capacity. Many spectators were sporting pretty hats and dresses in the polo tradition. Children, along with their pets, were running around in anticipation of the commencement of the match. The players, umpires and their respective ponies marched onto the field. The National Anthem was sung and the players introduced. And then the match began with the ceremonial throw in. As it was reported in The Morning Line, “Team Royal Salute dominated the first four chukkers, up 8-3 early fifth chukker when Airstream mounted a come back with two goals each by Nick Manifold and Matias Magrini for 8-7 early in the chukker, Brant scoring his fourth goal of the day for Royal Salute’s new 2 goal lead 9-7, Magrini with one last goal for 9-8 final.” Team Royal Salute was victorious. In an interview after the game, top ranked Facundo Pieres and team Royal Salute ambassador said, “This match, which marked the closing of the polo season in Greenwich, was electrifying to play. It was high-goal polo at its best — in the last four and a half minutes of the final chukker, Airstream added an incredible 5 goals, making them tough to beat, but Royal Salute held on to the lead to win. The polo and the event were of the highest caliber. On behalf of all the players, our thanks to Royal Salute for championing it”.

It was an exhilarating game indeed! Tremendous polo was played and witnessed by all the spectators who came to watch this animated high-goal match, forget their worries, and have fun. It is here on this 60 acre oasis where many long time friendships have been forged and goodwill abounds. A very special salute to Royal Salute and Greenwich Polo Club’s Peter Brant for their contributions to the success of the sport of polo. PN

H

aviland Hollow Polo Club/NYCPOLO.com (HHPC) is headed into its sixth polo season with another year of solid growth. On the heels of rave reviews from the polo and equestrian community over the past five years, HHPC continually develops a strong following of professionals, students and fans from around the world. The farm, conveniently located one hour from mid-town Manhattan and thirty minutes from Greenwich, CT, has become known for the incredible quality of its facilities, its fun-loving people and family friendly environment. The Polo Club boasts a yearround polo program with two topnotch polo fields and an indoor polo arena. The summer polo season is from May until October and has levels ranging from 4 to 14 goal polo for its members. The winter season is from November until March and play is from beginner to intermediate levels. The facilities include a 200 x 100 indoor arena, 225 x 125 outdoor arena, riding trails and a nice turnout on 250 acres. In addition, the farm has two 1/2 mile sand exercise tracks that both the polo and equestrian clients like to use to exercise, ride or to cool down their horses. The club offers a year round lessons program for beginner and intermediate players to learn and improve the game of polo. In addition, a high school polo program was introduced two years ago, with this past winter growing to two arena teams training at HHPC and competing in the Regional USPA Inter scholastic tournament at Cornell. “Many of our students have gone on to play matches outside 44 | POLO Northeast 2014

of the club and received MVP and complements on the quality of their play. We break down the game into horsemanship, hitting, playing and rules skills. Once our students learn the basics, we encourage them to improve, says owner and two goal rated player, Sam Ramirez Jr. The club has successfully introducing people of all ages to this challenging and exciting sport in a unique way, having already produced many players that started with little or no prior experience. The social aspects of HHPC offer horse enthusiasts an opportunity to come watch scheduled games and tournaments, as well as attend charity matches in September. The fields are well designed for an afternoon of relaxing on the hill while picnicking & viewing a match. We were thrilled to see our friends from Maserati, who began exploring their interest in aligning their brand with polo at HHPC, take on the title sponsorship once again this year at IPC! And we extend special thanks to our supporters: Perrier, Vita Coco, Purity vodka, and Corzo tequila. PN

“The whole secret to the game is these horses,” says Tommy Wayman, a world-class polo player. “In polo, these horses have got to go for 7 minutes. A race horse has got to be in condition too, that’s obvious, but what do they run the Kentucky Derby in – a minute 50? And it’s only one big circle. Well, a polo pony has got to run as fast as he can, but he’s also got to stop, turn and start up again, for 7 minutes straight…

… As far as animals go, the polo pony has got to be the best athlete of them all.”

T

he Quechee Polo Club of Quechee, Vermont has been playing polo since legendary coach and Polo Hall of Fame member Stephen “Doc” Roberts founded the club in 1974. Doc Roberts had retired after 30 years of teaching, research, and administration at Cornell University, where he had also played and coached polo. After moving to Vermont to join his brother in a veterinary practice, Doc Roberts teamed up with two other polo enthusiasts, Allen Choate and Robert Tuttle to form the first Quechee Polo Club. Playing on fields owned by and generously maintained by the Quechee Lakes Landowners Association for all these years, the polo club celebrates its 40th anniversary this summer. Today, the club plays low goal polo (2-4) versus other polo clubs from around the region. Club members are local residents of New Hampshire and Vermont, several who once played collegiate polo. The team plays most of its matches “at home,” but does travel a few weekends to out-of-state tournaments. The 2014 team includes long-time members Patrick and Angeline Andrew, Chuck Wira, Chris Wira, Steve Leninski, and Joe Kozlik. As the number of polo clubs in the northeast has declined, The Quechee Polo Club invites players and clubs from surrounding states to the Green Mountains to play before a crowd of loyal local residents and summer visitors. The Club has offered many benefit matches over the years, including the annual Quechee Library “Polo for Prose” benefit match each August.

After the playing of the national anthem, the match begins. An announcer explains the rules, narrates the play-by-play, and keeps the crowd aware of what is happening on the field. In addition to the traditional stomping of the divots, half time often features an invitation to try out the foot mallets, and after the match, spectators are invited to the staging area to meet the horses and players. The team plays most Saturdays in July and August, and finishes the season with the annual Labor Day weekend “Chihuahua Cup.” Begun several years ago, the first Chihuahua Cup featured the New Hampshire members of the team playing the Vermont members. Instead of the museum-style silver cups that grace the professional polo matches, the team found an old tarnished cup and threw in a tiny stuffed animal Chihuahua that one of the players picked up at a Taco Bell giveaway. Team member Charlie Hutchinson’s pet Chihuahua became the first official mascot. What began as a simple fun parody of the professional polo tournaments became a tradition, with polo players from around the region invited to come celebrate the end of another polo season. PN

POLO EQUIPMENT

1

Helmets are required in the game of polo. The most common helmets are made of reinforced, padded plastic with a cloth covering and chin strap. The helmet protects the player from swinging mallets and from balls traveling at speeds of nearly 100 mph. Face guards can be attached.

2

Knee Pads provide player protection from flying balls and rough ride-offs.

3

Leg Wraps provide support to the pony’s tendons and ligaments as well as protection from flying balls and stray mallets. The pony’s legs are wrapped from below the knee to the fetlock.

4

The Mallet has a rubber-wrapped grip and a webbed thong, called a sling, for wrapping around the thumb. The shaft is made of Manau-cane with a small number of them today made from composite plastic materials. The mallet usually has a fair amount of “whip” and can bend quite a bit during a hard swing. Mallet length ranges from 50 to 53 inches. The head of the mallet is made of tipa, a South American hardwood. The head is approximately 9 ¼ inches long and the ball is struck with the broad sides rather than the tips.

5

The Ball is made of hard plastic that dents a bit each time it is hit. The ball is about 3 ¼ inches in diameter and weighs about 4 ounces.

6

Polo Stirrup Irons are heavier than most and the stirrup leathers are wider and thicker, for added safety when the player stands in the stirrups.

7

The Martingale is a leather strap that runs from the noseband to the girth. It keeps the pony from raising his head too high.

8

Boots are always colored brown in polo and extend to just below the knee. They are made from heavy leather for protection during ride-offs and a better grip.

9

Polo Saddles are English-style with a flat seat and no knee support; the rider adopting a forward-leaning seat. A breastplate is added, usually attached to the front billet, to stop the saddle from slipping back. Many saddles also have an overgirth for safety. PN
