Edwardsville Tops Marquette In MVCHA 2A Battle; Explorer’s Gentry Turns Away 50 in the Loss by Pete Hayes - The Telegraph

EAST ALTON – The match-up between last season’s two MVCHA champions was supposed to be fairly easy for the defending 2A champ, Edwardsville. But nobody told defending 1A champ Marquette Catholic, in particular, goalie Austin Gentry. Gentry turned in a 50-save performance, keeping the game within the Explorers’ reach until late. But Edwardsville, playing what head coach Jason Walker called “our best game of the season,” eventually came away with a 5-2 victory Tuesday night at the East Alton Ice Arena. The victory keeps Edwardsville unbeaten at 7-0. Marquette, which was moved up to Class 2A this season because of winning last year’s 1A crown, dropped to 2-2-1. “That was the best goaltending performance against us I’ve seen in years,” Walker said. “Casual fans might think we were shooting everything right at him, but that wasn’t the case. He was squaring up to the puck and he was making great saves.” Marquette head coach Brandon Becker, who was a goalie at SIUE and earlier at Roxana High, added, “ He played extremely well – he was playing out of his mind. “We told him to be ready for a lot of shots tonight.” Indeed. The Tigers pummeled 55 of them at Gentry, including a 17-1 advantage in the first period. But despite the lopsided advantage, the teams were tied 1-1 after the first period. EHS outshot Marquette overall 55-6. Marquette, which spotted the Tigers an early lead on a goal by Dominic Warren, evened the score late in the first on a goal from the point by Nick Schranck, on the Explorers’ only shot of the period with 1:37 remaining. “Pretty good production rate,” mused Marquette assistant coach Daniel Guarino. “(Gentry) kept us in it. It could have gotten out of hand early otherwise.”

Walker said the style of the game helped his team. “That’s the kind of game we needed,” Walker said. “Our guys responded very well to the situation. We controlled the puck well and were able to create a lot of scoring chances. “I’ve been in a lot of games against a hot goalie and you start to panic. But our guys didn’t do that.” The Tigers outshot Marquette 18-2 in the second period, but scored just once when Marshall Gevers netted one at 6:35 from an assist by Jon Weisner. In the third period, the Tigers scored three times. Cory Johnson scored a power-play goal at 12:00 and added another goal at 7:00. Devon Fleck scored at 5:40. Blake Varady scored Marquette’s second goal at 2:25, assisted by Nick Korte and Sam Becker. “This was our best game this season,” Walker said. “We responded well to (Gentry), we didn’t panic and we controlled the puck very well.” Edwardsville 5 - Marquette 2 Edwardsville 1 1 3 - 5 Marquette 1 0 1 - 2 First Period E – Warren (Lewis) 10:40 M – Schranck (McCarthy) 1:37 Shots: Edwardsville 17, Marquette 1 Second Period E – Gevers (Weisner) 6:35 Shots: Edwardsville 18, Marquette 2 Third Period E – Johnson (Weisner) 12:00 E – Johnson (unassisted) 7:00 E – Fleck (unassisted) 5:40 M – Varady (Korte, Becker) Shots: Edwardsville 20, Marquette 3. NHL, Union To Meet Again With Mediators Wednesday

America’s Premier Sled League

NHL Release (www.nhl.com) - December 11, 2012

The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association have agreed to get back to the bargaining table Wednesday and will be joined by federal mediators, according to NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. The meeting will be held at an undisclosed location. Daly said that the session Wednesday will involve federal mediators and will not be held in New York City.

The NHL and NHLPA met with mediators from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services on Nov. 28 and 29, but those meetings broke off without any progress being made. The NHL and NHLPA have been without a CBA since Sept. 16. Games have been cancelled through Dec. 30, along with the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and the 2013 NHL All-Star Game.

NHL Announces Cancellation of 2012-13 Regular-Season Schedule Through December 30 NHL Release (www.nhl.com) - December 10, 2012 NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through December 30. The cancellations are necessary due to the absence of a new Collective

Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players’ Association and the NHL. A total of 526 regular-season games—42.8 percent of the season—were scheduled for October 11 through December 30.

St. Louis Jr. Blues Atop NA3HL Standings by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ St. Louis Jr. Blues coach J.P. Beilsten was not quite sure what to expect from his team entering play in the North American Tier III Hockey League (NA3HL) this season. He had a number of first year eligible players, others who were not new to the league but new to the team to go along with a veteran group. The mixture has worked better than anyone could have expected in the first half of league play. “I really thought we would hit some speed bumps along the way with a very young team,” Beilsten said. “We have hit a couple of those but responded well.” The Jr. Blues have dominated not only the Central Division but also the entire league. They entered play this weekend with a 26-2-0 record. That mark leads their division by 24 points with Peoria second with 28 points. And the 52 points earned by the Blues are 11 more than any other team in the 17-team league. Western Conference leader Granite City is second with 41 points. St. Louis has done it on both ends of the ice. They lead the league in goals scored with 146 and also lead the league in goals against with 46. “They have jelled extremely well and are playing with a lot of consistency overall,” Beilsten said. “One game it will be the vets who lead the way and the next game it will

be the young players.” Depth may be the biggest strength of this year’s squad. “Anybody we put on the ice can contribute on any given night,” Beilsten said. “The depth really tends to help us out at the end of weekends.” The balance of the team is shown in the league statistics as no St. Louis player ranks in the top 10 in scoring. But nine players have scored eight or more goals. Nobody else in the league can even approach that mark. Cody Guidorzi (16 goals and 13 assists), Mike Lozano (16 goals and 11 assists) and Brycon Johnson (13 goals and 14 assists) have led the way in the balanced. attack. Guidorzi is one of the veterans on the team. Lozano is one of the players who came to St. Louis from the defunct Chicago team and Johnson is one of the young players on the team, born in 1996. The defense, led by players such as Tyler Opilka and Kerry McGlynn, has been stingy

and the Jr. Blues have gotten consistent play in the net. Mikael Broliden is 13-1-0 with a 1.41 goals against average while Clint Steinmeyer is 12-1-0 with a 2.02 goals against average. The regular season has just passed the halfway mark with 48 league games scheduled. “It has been fun to watch these young players mesh with a good veteran group,” Beilsten said. “They are a great group both on and off the ice. I knew the younger guys could compete at this level. It was a question of when and they have done it quicker than I expected. One of the biggest challenges I

The 2002 AAA Blues not only represented the St. Louis area well recently at the Nation’s Cup but they also helped their country to a championship in the tournament which was held the final weekend of November on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing. It was the first time the team had competed in the unique event, which was basically a battle between the United States and Canada. Teams opened with round-robin play with a United States team playing against a team from Canada with one point on the line

for each game. The AAA Blues were able to contribute three and a half out of a total of four points for the United States in the roundrobin as they had three wins and a tie in the round. St. Louis defeated the Quinte Red Devils (4-2), the Sting (12-0) and the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs (4-2) and had a 3-3 tie against the Barrie Colts. After the first round of games, the six US and six Canadian teams were seeded one through six with the St. Louis AAA Blues taking the top spot. In the No. 1 seed championship game they squared off against Barrie once again. This game, like the one in the preliminary round, was tight through two periods. But the Blues exploded with three third period goals in a 6-3 victory in the signature game of the tournament. That game earned the United States six points, the most for any game. The No. 2 seed title game was worth five points, the No. 3 seed title game four points, the No. 4 seed championship game three points, the No. 5 seed title game two points and the No. 6 championship game one point. “That No. 1 seed championship game is one which often determines the champion,” Campbell said. That was not the case this time as the

United States dominated the playoff games and had clinched the team title. But the win by the AAA Blues put an exclamation point on a big tournament by the United States, which won 42-27. “It was the first time we had been in this tournament and it was a lot of fun,” Campbell said. “It was on the campus of Michigan State and was a good road trip for a lot of the families. Some of them drove and others flew but it was just a great weekend.” One of the unique aspects of the tournament was the fact that the players did not wear their usual jerseys. “They got to wear the USA jersey and got to keep the socks and the jersey,” Campbell said. “You will likely see some of those out there this winter. It was fun because you were not only playing for yourselves but for the country. A lot of the other teams would be at your games, chanting USA, USA, USA.” Campbell has been pleased with the play of his team throughout the season and especially in the tournament. “The guys played great,” Campbell said. “They are a fast team and they have been practicing hard. Their skills keep getting better every day. They are coming together as a team and we got contributions from everyone throughout the tournament. They played one of their better games in the finals. It made the drive home a lot better.” Members of the St. Louis AAA Blues 2002 Division include: Chase Bradley; Seamus Campbell; Wesly Carbone; Blake Dangos; Will DeWitt; Eli Doughart-Wood; Jake Keller; Mason Langenbrunner; Bob Lockwood; Hunter Longhi; Ben Parres; Alex Tarias; Makenna Webster; Carson Wilhelm; Mitchell Day; and Matthew Smith.

MVCHA Faces Rink Challenges And League Realignment by Pete Hayes - The Telegraph

As the Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association begins its season, the players, coaches and fans are seeing a host of changes, including one prompted by the closing of one of the league’s main ice rinks. The U.S. Ice Sports Complex in Fairview Heights has closed indefinitely because of structural damage to the building and ice surfaces caused by mine subsidence. Officials, including structural engineers, from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources have been evaluating the building and accessing the damage. The facility, which serves as the home ice for about half of the MVCHA’s teams, as well as for McKendree University and teams from the local youth hockey club (Southern Illinois Ice Hawks), remains closed until officials can determine what to do about the damage. Abandoned coal mines in the region have frequently caused damage to area buildings and roads through the years. U.S. Ice Sports, which features two rinks, was closed in mid October. That meant MVCHA officials needed to rework their schedule and switch games from Fairview Heights to the East Alton Ice Arena, as well as the Wilson Park (outdoor) Ice Rink in Granite City. East Alton’s rink also serves as home ice for the SIU Edwardsville teams and the Twin Bridges youth hockey club. “We had to rework the schedule,” MVCHA official Sam Guarino said. “We’ve sent the new schedule out, but we will rework it again if the (U.S. Ice) rink reopens.” McKendree and Southern Illinois Ice Hawks are temporarily playing their home games at the Scottrade Center. Other league changes include, a merger of two teams involving a one-time league power, two varsity teams from Edwardsville, and a realignment that will see 1A and 2A teams facing off against each other. The league has been realigned to four four-team divisions, two for each class. Class 1A West Division teams include Bethalto, Highland, Jerseyville and a combined Wood River/Roxana team. Those teams merged for this season because of a shrinking number of players at each

school. The team will play as the Wood River Oilers. Teams from 1A and 2A will play each of the teams from the other class once and teams from its own class twice for an 18-game season. Previously, 1A teams did not face 2A teams. All games will count toward teams’ final records, but postseason play will be held for each class. “It will be different,” Bethalto coach Corey Newgent said. “But it’s fair because everybody will play the same schools the same number of times.” The teams in the Class 1A East Division include Collinsville, Triad, Freeburg and a team from Edwardsville, which is listed in schedules as “Edwardsville 1A.” Edwardsville has always played in the larger Class 2A, but will enter a team in 1A that last season competed as one of two EHS junior varsity teams. “Edwardsville had two JV teams,” Newgent said. “This one is basically what last season was its top JV team. This year, they will have just one junior varsity team.” In the larger Class 2A division, the North Division will include Edwardsville 2A, Granite City, Alton High and Marquette Catholic, which last season won the Class 1A championship and was moved up to Class 2A. Columbia, which was the Class 1A East Division regular-season champ, was also moved up to 2A and will compete in the 2A East, along with Belleville East, Belleville West and O’Fallon. Althoff and Waterloo did not enter teams this season. Because of the increased number of games at East Alton and Granite City, some of the games will start as late as 9:50 p.m. Most MVCHA varsity games will be played on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights. “That’s the reality of having limited ice and a lot of teams,” Newgent said. “Games will have to be started later to get everybody in.”
