CBC Stuns DeSmet In Challenge Cup by Reggie Dunlop - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’

Defense and experience wins games in the postseason. Veteran teams built for the playoffs have just the right balance of both. These veteran groups use their experience to their advantage by defending the ice collectively as a team. Championship teams feature leaders on the defensive end of the ice as well as players on the offensive end who can take games over on a moment notice. “Hockey is a unique sport in the sense you need each and every guy helping each other and pulling in the same direction to be successful.” - Wayne Gretzky CBC used the experience in goal and on defense to backbone a team that won its 13th Mid-States Championship at the Scottrade

Center Monday night as they blanked DeSmet 6-0. CBC netminder Joe Staely, stopped all 15 shots he faced to post his ninth shutout of the year and two goals apiece from senior Glen Ryan and sophomore Austin Ruecschoff led the way offensively for CBC. The Cadets smothered the DeSmet attack with a veteran defensive corps led by seniors Mike Sieckhaus, Ryan Croghan, and Alex Clark. CBC outshot the Spartans 38-15 in the championship game and the nine seniors for CBC went out winners for the second time in their careers. Other seniors for CBC were goalie Staely, Michael Beckham, David Hibbard, Caesar Sorrentino, Adam Caruso, and championship game MVP Joey Lupo,

who scored one goal and added two assists in the victory. “It was a veteran team that grew together as the year marched on, and they had that right mix of players to put together an unforgettable year,” said CBC coach John Jost as he captured his ninth Mid States crown. CBC (33-1-1) started the scoring 44 seconds into the game as Ryan converted an Andy McGlynn pass driving it past stunned DeSmet goalie Aaron Brickman for the early lead. For Ryan, it was his 18th goal of the season and McGlynn notched his ninth assist of the playoffs as the sophomore winger led CBC in playoff scoring with 15 points. Ruecschoff and freshman defenseman Ben Jones also scored for CBC in the first period as the Cadets raced to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. DeSmet (23-41) tried to counter the aggressive CBC forecheck but top Spartan forwards Charles Combs and Trent Frederic were kept at bay by the CBC defense. Second period goals by Rucschoff and linemate Lupo staked CBC to a 5-0 lead and Ryan’s 19th goal of the year finished the scoring for CBC in the third period

and the 4-3 overtime loss to DeSmet in the 2010 finals was erased by this outstanding effort by the Cadet veteran players. “That loss to DeSmet in the 2010 finals was one game we never got over,” said Jost, the Dean of Mid-States coaches now in his 16th season. “We blew a 3-1 lead and this game tonight will erase a lot of bad memories.” For DeSmet coach John Mattingly, the rebuild since the 2010 championship season has now reached a point where victories come a lot easier than the season following the hanging of the championship banner. That year DeSmet seniors Brent Feltes, Brendan Thomeczek, and Tanner Pederson endured a year when the Spartans finished with their lowest win total (3) in their storied history on ice but now they enjoyed the competition of a title game with rival CBC. “John Murray (DeSmet coach in the 2010 championship season) told me it was going to take a complete overhaul of the program. The team was saddled with major graduation losses and I basically was going to have to start all over. But we were able to attract a lot of hard working players that wanted to win. Bottom line. I think we are back to compete for good,” said Mattingly who came to DeSmet after a coaching stint at MICDS. While DeSmet rebuilds CBC will reload and begin a quest to return to the title game for the 14th straight year.

Rockwood Summit Outlasts Lafayette In Wickenheiser Final

Rockwood’s championship season finished with a 19-6-4 record and the school’s second Wickenheiser Cup. Whitfield Battles Back To Win Founders Cup Championship by Reggie Dunlop - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ Parkway West came up short in the exciting finale to the Mid-States season. Whitfield tied the Longhorns late in the third period on a goal by Ryan Edgar, and then in overtime Edgar scored again to give Whitfield the Founders Cup championship with a come from behind 5-4 win. Nick Balestra and Jackson Fleming each had two goals for Parkway West (14-11-2). Fleming

had given West a 4-3 lead at 4:08 of the third period but Edgar’s heroics erased the Longhorns hopes of a Founders Cup championship. Also scoring for Whitfield (7-18-2) were Nick Kunin, Alex Freund, and Anthony Colarelli. Joshua Martin turned aside 25 shots on goal to preserve the win for Whitfield.
