When you’re dealing with nine-year-olds, hockey coaches don’t tend to draw up elaborate defensive schemes and traps for their team. Sure, you introduce some of the finer nuances of hockey, but in the end you hope the kids have fun and learn a thing or two about teamwork. The Chesterfield Falcons Squirt AA Team is a perfect illustration of that concept. “The mindset we always have with the kids is we want to have fun and win as many games as we can,” Falcons Assistant Coach Scott Nichol said. “Our little guys have fun.”

Led by a coaching staff with decades worth of NHL-experience, the Falcons had all kinds of fun in the Big Bear Wild Turkey Tournament in St. Louis Nov.23-25, where the young Chesterfield team captured championship honors. Entering the Thanksgiving tournament, one concern that Nichol said the team had was its youth. While the Falcons were going against other Squirt AA teams, the vast majority of the roster was compiled of kids born in 2003. Much of the Chesterfield’s opposition featured kids a bit older.

14U Lady Blues Beat Chicago Mission For Tournament Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’

It was mission accomplished in more ways than one for the 14U AAA Lady Blues in the North American Friendship Tournament in Detroit over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Lady Blues survived a shaky start in the tournament to win in the 12-team field and in the process knock off the Chicago Mission in the championship game. “I know you are never supposed to look ahead to the championship game before the semifinals,” Lady Blues coach Mark Hallemann said. “But we talked about our mission was to beat the Mission. They are a great program and a great team.” The Mission had not only beaten the Lady Blues in their two previous meetings this season but the St. Louis team had yet to score a goal against them. The Lady Blues only won one of three games in pool play as they competed in the tougher bracket against teams from Canada. They opened with a 3-1 win over the Windsor Wildcats but lost by the same 3-1 score to both the Chatham Outlaws and Kitchener Lady Rangers. “We kind of back-doored into the playoff round,” Hallemann said. “But in this kind of format it was harder to get through the round robin. We still felt confident going into the playoff round.” The Lady Blues would allow only two goals in their three games in the playoff round. They were seeded fourth out of their bracket and opened with a 2-1 win over the first seed in the other bracket, the Burlington Barracudas. They “exploded” with five goals in a 5-1 semifi-

nal victory over the Oshawa Lady Generals. “We are a team which does not score a lot of goals,” Hallemann said. “We have a super player in Abbey Stanley and we decided to move her from her normal defense position to center and moved Lauren MacInnis from forward to defense. That opened things up us offensively.” Hallemann stayed with that alignment in the championship game and it worked as the Lady Blues defeated the Mission 2-0 with a pair of first period goals. The Mission out shot the Lady Blues 24-15 but that is not that unusual against top-notch competition. Earlier in the month, the Lady Blues were out shot 40-4 by the Etobicoke Dolphins, which was undefeated at the time and the top team in Canada. But the Lady Blues scored on one of their four shots and the Dolphins were shut out as Lexi Thomeczek stopped all 40 shots. Thomeczek was named the Most Valuable Player in the championship game of the North American Friendship Tournament. “Lexi is one of the best goalies I have ever seen,” said Hallemann, who had just 11 skaters in the championship game. “She is so smooth and makes it look effortless.” Members of the Lady Blues include: Adeline Beattie; Megan Bowman; Lucy Condon; Mackenzie Dillard; Olivia Ferrell; Sydnee Goyer; Chase Hallemann; Brooke Kudicka; Jayne Lewis; Lauren MacInnis; Abigail Peloquin; Mikayla Richter; Athena Song; Abbey Stanley; and Alexis Thomeczek.

Affton’s U15 Midgets Skate Past Eureka In Holiday Championship by Matt Grover - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’

For Craig Harrison, Head Coach of the Affton Americans U15 Midget AA Team, a good team begins with stout defense. “The kids are starting to understand playing in a system and playing in a structure,” Harrison said. “Hockey is a defensive game. We teach them to play defense first.” Unfortunately, for the Americans’ competition, that message resonated loud and clear at the Big Bear Wild Turkey Tournament in St. Louis Nov. 23-25. Affton reeled off four victories in the tournament, and only surrendered three goals to capture championship hardware at the Thanksgiving tournament. Affton started their run with a 3-1 victory against the Eureka Wildcats. The Wildcats’ received strong goaltending, but Eureka couldn’t muster up enough offense to contend with the Americans. For Harrison, the victory was a huge way to start the tournament. “(Eureka) was a very tough competitor,” Harrison said. “For us to jump out to a 3-1 lead in the game was good. It was a big victory.” In the Americans’ second game, Affton was forced to show some resiliency. Facing-off against the Skokie Flyers, Affton stumbled out the gate and wasn’t playing the crisp hockey it strived for. As a result, the Americans found themselves in a 1-0 hole early. “(Skokie) jumped on us early,” Harrison said. “Our kids regrouped and realized that we had to

get going here.” Affton did just that. The American scored four unanswered goals to win the game 4-1. With two victories in hand, the Americans completed a clean sweep of the round robin leg of the Wild Turkey (314) 542-4020 • info@thecarouselgroup.com Tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Stars. Chesterfield’s Meramec Squirt A Sharks Skate Past PeeWee A1 Ice Hawks In Thanksgiving Final Falcons Soar In Wild Turkey Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’

by Bill Hester ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’

Five goals against in five games usually results in success and that was the case over the Thanksgiving weekend as the Chesterfield Falcons PeeWee A1 team captured the championship in the Big Bear Wild Turkey Thanksgiving Tournament. “Our best players are on defense and they have been playing well and played well in the tournament,” Falcons coach Bill Kirchner said. “And our goaltending has been a real surprise as well. At this level that position can be sometimes dicey but we have a great kid back there (George Jones).” The combination of a stingy defense and Jones’ play in the net was the difference in the five-team field. The Falcons outscored their opponents 22-5 in the tournament although Kirchner said that did not mean that it was a dominating performance. “The teams were pretty equal and we were very fortunate at times,” he said. “We had some empty net goals and some late in games. It was just great to see the St. Louis kids out there playing hockey and having fun.” And, of course, it is always more fun to win. The five teams played each other in the round-robin portion of the tournament with the top two teams advancing to the championship game. The Falcons defeated the Tulsa Flames (4-1), the Kansas City Stars (3-1), the St. Peters Spirit (5-1) and the Affton Americans (5-2) in round-robin play. It would turn out to be an all-St. Louis championship game Sunday at the Fenton Forum with the Falcons coming out on top of the Americans 5-0. “We played well in the championship game but it was close for a long time and Affton was hampered as several of their kids could not make it.” Kirchner said. “That is a razor-edge deal at this age having to play without one or two or three of your top kids. I know that would have really affected us.” Winger Vinny Conti was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship game. “Vinny was the smallest player on the ice,” Kirchner said. “But he just plays with so much heart. He hustled more than any other kid and he was deserving of the MVP.” Members of the Chesterfield Falcons PeeWee A1 team include: Grant Ahlheim; Vinny Conti; Bradley Cunningham; Ethan Dabbs; Mitchell Gabel; Randall Grewe; George Jones; Charles Katke; Trevor Keune; Drake Nickolaison; William Rourke; Samuel Schultz; Staciana Stock; Cole Waddell; and Eric Wiggins.

The heads were down momentarily for the Meramec Sharks Squirt A1 hockey team after Ben Kleinschmidt missed on a penalty shot attempt midway through the third period of the championship game of the Chicago Thanksgiving Tournament. But the spirits were high moments later as Wyatt Hill scored what proved to be the only goal of the title game against the Southern Illinois Ice Hawks and the Sharks came home with the championship trophy in the six-team bracket. “We really came together as a team over the weekend and played very strong defensively,” Meramec coach Derek Ciolek said. “There were some very good offensive teams in the tournament and we concentrated on playing from our zone out and did a good job.” The Sharks won their pool by winning two games and tying another. They defeated the Chicago Blues #2 team (5-2) and the St. Cloud Saints (9-2) while tying the Chicago Blues #1 team (3-3). They had a rematch with the Blues #1 team in the semifinals and much like the first game, it was back and forth and a nail-biter throughout. “I thought if you went by the eye test that the

Blues were the best team in the tournament,” Ciolek said. “I knew it was going to be a tough, competitive game. The teams were so dead even. We knew we had to give everything we had to go on.” Danny Walters gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead but the Blues tied the game with a goal midway through the third period. Zachary Adamec would score what proved to be the game winner with about three minutes left in the game. That set up the drama of the championship game which was scoreless until Hill’s late goal. Christian Flamm, who made 59 saves on 66 shots in the tournament, closed the tournament out in fashion with the shutout. “Zachary moves well side to side,” Ciolek said. “He has played well all season for us, especially so this weekend. We had played Southern Illinois a couple of times in St. Louis so we knew it was going to be a good game. I think both teams were tired, playing their fifth game in three days. But

Affton Mites Top Twin Bridges In Turkey Day Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’

There was a close opening game, a couple of blowouts and an overtime thriller for the Affton Americans Mite AA h o c k e y team at the Big Bear’s Wild Turkey Thanksgiving Tournament. But the results were all the same as Affton won all four games and captured the tournament which was played Friday-Sunday at the Hardee’s Ice Plex and Fenton Forum. The Americans opened with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Orland Park Vikings Elite team Friday night. “That was a good game against two evenly matched teams,” Affton coach John Budde. The next two games came against the Orland Park Vikings Silver team and the Americans cruised to 17-2 and 9-0 victories.

the guys worked hard and got through it.” And got rewarded with the championship. Members of the Meramec Sharks Squirt A1 team are: Zachary Adamec; Kyle Budde; Chase Christopher; Mason Christopher; Connor Clancy; Christian Flamm; Wyatt Hill; Blake Kern; Ben Kleinschmidt; Nicholas Keuss; Connor Liebman; Bryce Lewis; John Loretta; jack Michel; Jason Schnell; and Danny Walters. “We scored nine goals in the first period in the first game and then nine in the whole game the next time,” Budde said. “I guess we took it easy on them. We really tried to quit scoring but the goals just kept on coming.” Budde had a talk with his team prior to Sunday’s championship game against the Twin Bridges Lightning, a team it had beaten 7-1

earlier in the season. “These are 8-year-old kids and I told them that it was not going to be that easy,” Budde said. And it certainly wasn’t as Twin Bridges had a 3-1 lead late in the game. The Americans scored a goal to pull within one and Budde called a timeout. “I think the one minute rest helped out,” Budde said. “We were on a fouron-four and set up a play which they executed perfectly.” Mario DiMagio scored with 50 seconds to play to tie the game. The overtime was played three-on-three and it did not take long for DiMaggio, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship game, to end it as he scored on a breakaway in the first minute of the extra session. “It was very encouraging to see the guys come back the way they did,” Budde said. “We had played in a championship game earlier in the season and lost. They did not want that to happen again. We got down but they just kept going and going.” There was no time to celebrate the championship though as the Americans had a league game at noon. They took off their skates and helmets, kept their uniforms on and rode to Queeny Park where they added a 6-4 win to their memorable weekend. Members of the Affton Americans Mite AA team are: Ben Behrens; Jacob Behrmann; Vinny Boccardi; Mason Budde; Sal Cerrato; Mario DiMaggio; Mitch Geiser; Gus Immken; Jack Larrigan; Connor McCaffrey; Joey Rancilio; Brodie Reinholz; Owen Schneider; and Ben Winkelmann.

Nichol, however, said the small age discrepancy could be used as a learning tool for the Falcons. “Every game they play, they realize they have to skate,” Nichol said. Chesterfield began the round-robin leg of the tournament with a 4-3 victory over the Orland Park Vikings. The Falcons flirted with danger a couple of times throughout the contest, but in the end escaped with the victory. “It was a good wake-up call,” Nichol said. Games two and three proved not to be so dramatic. Facing-off against a pair of familiar local foes, the Falcons soared past the St. Peters Spirit and the Affton Americans by identical scores of 8-2. “I don’t think the score really dictated how the games went,” Nichol said. “(The Falcons) kept playing the same style. They kept going and rolling the lines over and putting pucks on net. Before you knew it, it was 8-2.” With sweeping the round robin, Chesterfield

advanced to the championship game where they would meet the Orland Park Vikings in a rematch from game one. While Chesterfield had already defeated the Vikings earlier in the tournament and had just scored 16 goals in the previous two games, Nichol said, the Falcons coaching staff didn’t want the team to rest on its laurels. “We just wanted to reiterate it was Championship Sunday,” Nichol said. “It doesn’t matter what you did before.” Similar to the teams’ first encounter, the rematch proved to be a heavyweight bout. The Falcons and Vikings exchanged chances and were locked-in to a tight contest. In the third period, the Falcons clung to a one-goal lead before being able to add an emptynetter to seal the deal and clinch the Wild Turkey Championship with a 6-4 victory over Orland Park. The Falcons’ Dominic Kraus was named Most Valuable Player for the championship game. “We didn’t play our best game,” Nichol said.

“In fact, we probably played our worst game in the tournament, but it was a good learning experience.” Perhaps the most gratifying thing to come out of the tournament for the Falcons, was that they won the tournament playing short-handed. An illness and previous engagements left Chesterfield with a short bench. However, the team pulled through. “It was an all-around great team effort,” Nichol said. “They all rallied around each-other. It was a great confidence builder for everybody.” And the Falcons also had fun. Just ask Nichol. “It was fun to coach and fun to watch,” Nichol said. The Big Bear Wild Turkey Tournament Champion Chesterfield Falcons are: Blake Bayless, Sean Boehm, Caden Brown, Riley Brueck, Luke Chase, Ryan Egan, Patrick Johnson, Dominic Kraus, Jamie Ney, Hayden Nichol, Charlie Walker, Michael Woll and Holden Woodcroft. Jeff Brown is the Falcons’ Head Coach and his assistants are Kelly Chase, Mark Kraus, Scott Nichol and Craig Woodcroft. Shelley Woll is the team manager.
