St. Louis Rockets Proudly Present:

The 2012 Summer Chill 3 on 3 League The Rockets will once again offer St. Louis an open, fun, organized, and competitive 3 on 3 League. We are happy to offer set nights of play for each division! Exact dates are being determined, but week night ice and no weekend ice (Sat or Sun) is the plan. We will use the Webster Groves Ice Arena. Play will begin on Monday June 11 and conclude on July 22, taking off the week of Fourth of July. This year playoff day will be on Sunday July 22, 2011 due to ice constraints. Dates of play by division are as follows: Exact times will follow.Monday, Wed, and Friday nights for PeeWee and Bantams. Wed. and Friday nights for Mite and Squirts.

Who Can Play?

We are offering Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee, and Bantam Divisions, at the Gold and Silver level as numbers allow. Teams will have set nights for play. The league will begin in early June and regular season play ends in late July. Each division will have Playoffs. Completely open districts, all players are welcome!

What Is 3 ON 3?

3 on 3 is a non checking, fast paced cross ice game that offers players a developmental opportunity, by utilizing their quick thinking skills, passing ability, and puck handling moves, in a fun environment while playing hockey with players from both within and outside their home club. All players of all skill levels are welcome to bring a team. Each team will play two games per visit to the rink. Each game consists of 2 twelve minute periods. Most of all, 3 on 3 is just fun!

What Are The Rules?

(Full set of rules will be provided soon)

Teams of up to 14 out skaters and one goalie are encouraged to sign up. Players will not be allowed to be double rostered in this league. Goalies may be shared, but out skaters may only be assigned to one team. Individual sign ups will be accepted but not guaranteed. Team applications are strongly recommended for a guaranteed spot. Rosters will be checked and enforced in this league. We will provide referees. Each team will need to provide 1 or 2 coaches for their team on the ice, and a scorekeeper for their team at each game. It is a running clock for

all games, and all penalties will result in a penalty shot. No checking at any level. Zero tolerance policy will be in affect.

How Do You Sign Up?

Team sign up recommended, individuals can sign up and hope to be picked up if a team is looking for a player, but team sign up is best. Contact Justin Giessman at giessman@yahoo.com in order to register.

How Much Does It Cost?

The team fee is $1095 per team. Same cost as last year. The league will provide referees and jerseys for all teams. The winners of each division will also receive T shirts! A great value for 14 plus games. All schedules and standings will be on line! We hope you return to play in a well run league. We are limiting the number of teams per division to 6-8, so get your team together now! We hope to have silver and gold at all divisions if possible.

For further info please email Justin Giessman at giessman@yahoo.com or Chris Redferring at thereds@att.net.

20K Pump Skate Delivers Dynamic Support by Brandon R. McKinney – Johnny Mac’s Sporting Goods

The “Home Team” Equipment Advantage

With the release of the new 20K Pump skate, Reebok has taken its Pump franchise to the next level with industry-leading fit customization and performance...right out of the box. In designing the new 20K skate, Reebok re-examined the biomechanics of every stride – power skating, forward flexion, backward movement, etc. – to deliver pro performance. The 20K skate was designed with the goal of providing pro performance at a retail level. Reebok defines pro performance as power transmission or maximum energy transfer in every stride. With the 20K, Reebok introduces its new Dynamic Support System (DSS) technology. DSS represents optimized skate construction that mixes flexion and stiffness in the right areas for enhanced power transmission, agility and fit for an enhanced stride. Power Transmission 20K power transfer comes from its unique combination of embedded composite flexion zones with a reinforced quarter package. The facing area near the top three eyelets has been reinforced with composite fibers at a 45-degree angle. This helps combat stress in the flexion zone, which allows skaters to store energy and release it when pushing off. The spinal zone has also been reinforced with embedded composite fibers angled at both

zero and 90 degrees. This combination provides a greater range of flexibility and control. Wrapping around the ankle, these fibers help support the ankle and lock the heel in place. According to Reebok, the re-engineered Pro Armour skate quarter package represents the cornerstone of 20K construction. This multilayered design contains monofilaments and composite fibers reinforced by metal mesh to provide durability and added protection. Agility Forward flexion and backward flexion are critical components in a skater’s stride. The tendon guard places a vital role in improving agility. A popular myth suggests that the tendon guard should be stiff and hard. Allowing skaters to push back on their tendons, however, translates to more steel on the ice for longer strides and tighter turns. The 20K tendon guard contains rubber inserts, allowing skaters to push back at a 37-degree angle. The 20K tongue, an integral element in forward flexion, is composed of three layers – a lightweight foam core, an inner felt portion and a molded lace bite protector. This design offers maximum protection with an enhanced range of motion to provide greater agility. Fit Accuracy Developing a skate that effectively holds a skater’s foot in place is essential to enhanced performance. For the 20K, Reebok has incorpoHome Team continues on page 13

Colin Long Named ACHA First Team All-American Awards

Senior defenseman Colin Long has been named a Division I First Team All-American by the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHL). He becomes the only Lion to earn AllAmerican honors in the ACHL for the 2011-12 season. Long scored six goals and added 26 assists in 36 games during the year. He led the team with a +26 goal differential. Coach Rick Zombo praised Long for his work on and off the ice. “The strength of his family and friends and the pedigree of his coaching from midgets through juniors solidified his foundation in the sport,” Zombo said. He has been an exceptional leader, an incredible hockey player, but an even better

person.” The award adds to a long list of achievements for Long in his career at Lindenwood. In addition to several other honors, he was named to the ACHA All-Rookie Team and Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) All-Rookie Team his freshman year. He was an ACHA Second Team All-American as a sophomore and earned ACHA Tournament First Team honors as a junior. Long was named to the CSCHL All-Defensive Team earlier this year as a senior and also earned ACHA Tournament Second Team honors. During Long’s career, the Lions had a combined record of 147-18 and made it to the national championship game three times in four years, winning titles in 2009 and 2010.

Zombo Named CSCHL Coach of the Year; Six Lions Honored

In only his second year with Lindenwood, Zombo guided the team to a perfect 16-0 record in the CSCHL to win the conference and also captured the conference tournament title. It was the first time that the Lions had won both in the same season. Long had a total of 17 points and led the league with 14 assists. Gorczyca finished right behind with 13 assists to tie for fourth and led the league in game winning goals with three. He tied with Meletti for second in total points with 23 and in goals with 10. Meletti also led the league in power play goals with four and he was fourth in assists with 13. Morrell tied for seventh in assists in the CSCHL and had a total of 12 points in league play.

Brancheau was a deserving Rookie-ofthe-Year as he led or tied for the conference lead in all three major offensive categories. He was first in points with 25 and first in goals with 11 and he tied for the league lead in assists with 14. Belanger led the CSCHL with two short-handed goals, he was fourth in points with 20, tied for second in goals with 10 and also added 10 assists in the conference. Lindenwood was well represented in the awards as Lions accounted for a third of the members on the First and Second All-League Teams and on the All-Defensive Team. Lindenwood finished the season with a record of 31-5-0. The Lions were knocked out of the American Collegiate Hockey League Division 1 Play-offs in the semifinal round as they fell to eventual national champion Delaware 6-3.

rated three key elements in maximizing fit accuracy – the Pump, the skate lock and Reebok’s overall fit. Pump technology allows the skater to circulate air around the ankle, locking the heel in place and customizing the overall fit; the skate lock allows players to control the fit via separate lacing zones in the upper and lower portion of the boot for increased stability with each stride; and Reebok’s proprietary lasting technology with a dual zone liner composed of tacky nash and durable Clarino helps keep the foot dry while locking it in place for a superior fit inside the skate. Results Every element of the 20K skate has been tested and re-tested inside Reebok’s skate lab. Nothing has been left to chance. An extensive battery of tests – including puck impact, flexion, cut test and eyelet pull – was used to ensure the durability

and performance of the 20K’s Dynamic Support System. Needless to say, it seems to have passed the tests. The 20K skate also meets the approval of superstars like Sidney Crosby, Matt Duchene and Pavel Datsyuk. Now available at local pro shops – including Johnny Mac’s Sporting Goods – the new 20K Pump skate succeeds in providing pro performance at a retail level. Have questions regarding your gear? Green Bay Gamblers Win Clark Cup

USHL - Thursday May 24, 2012 Waterloo Black Hawks 2 @ Green Bay Gamblers 5 It was fast-paced first period as the action went up and down with quality chances for both teams. Green Bay had a 13-7 shot advantage with a couple of those coming off the stick of Alex Broadhurst who had two prime opportunities but Waterloo goaltender Stephon Williams turned away the USHL’s leading playoff scorer each time. Defenseman Eddie Wittchow drew a reaction from the crowd when his shot from the blueline hit the crossbar behind Gamblers goaltender Ryan McKay, but did not find its way into the net. The game remained scoreless until Green Bay defenseman Max Hartner picked up a loose puck following a scramble and fired a slap shot over the blocker side of Williams. It was the first USHL career playoff goal for Hartner who had scored just one goal in 38 regular season games this season. Midway through the second period, Waterloo would even the score when Mitch Witek fed defense partner Alex Barron who fired in a slap shot past a sprawling McKay. It was the third goal of the postseason for

Barron. The Gamblers wouldn’t take long to respond as Sam Herr sprung loose on a breakaway and slipped one past the Waterloo goaltender. It was the third goal of the series for Herr and his seventh of the postseason. Less than two minutes later, Ville Jarvelainen made it a two-goal lead when he re-directed a Peter Maric shot. It was the second playoff goal for Jarvelainen. In the third period, Green Bay added to the lead when Nolan LaPorte took a feed from Broadhurst and ripped a shot past Williams to make it 4-1. It was the fourth goal of the playoffs for LaPorte and his second in as many games. A few minutes later, Waterloo pulled the goaltender in favor of the extra attacker on a power play, but Broadhurst made a big steal just outside his own zone and fired his ninth goal of the postseason into the empty net. Jamie Hill scored a goal late for the Black Hawks but the night belonged to the Gamblers. Ryan McKay made 22 saves for his ninth win of the 2012 playoffs and his 15th USHL career postseason victory. Sam Herr was named the 2012 USHL Clark Cup MVP after finishing with 16 points (7g, 9a) and a plus-13 rating in 12 games. A total of 7,007 fans were in attendance at the Resch Center in Green Bay for Game Five.

STL Elite ‘02 Win Midwest NAP’s Tournament by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ Cards, flowers and candy are typical Mother’s Day gifts. But the young men on the STL Elite 02 hockey team had something even more special in mind for their mothers this spring - a tournament championship. And the St. Louis team did just that and did so in dramatic fashion in capturing the Midwest North American Prospect Showcase (NAPS) Tournament, which concluded on Mother’s Day in Chicago. “We played the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games on Mother’s Day and the whole focus with the players and coaches was to win one for the moms,” Elite coach Jim Campbell said. A majority of the player’s mothers were in attendance for their special gift in 2012. It was a hard-earned championship for the Elite ‘02s, which won all seven games in the tournament, although two were by shootout including the championship game. St. Louis is normally a high-scoring team and that showed in one of the four preliminary games as the Elite ‘02s pounded Krivo (Colorado) 15-2. Two of the other four games were determined by one-goal though, including a 3-2 shootout victory over the Chicago Bulldogs. St. Louis also had a tight win over the Warriors from Michigan 4-3 and concluded the preliminary round with a 6-3 win over the Falcons Coaliton. The teams were seeded for the quarterfinals with St. Louis earning a top seed with its four victories. The Mother’s Day festivities began with a 5-1 victory over Pro Hockey from Chicago. St. Louis followed that up with a 5-3 vic-

tory over the Wisconsin Flyers in the semifinals, which set up a championship rematch against the Chicago Bulldogs. And this one proved to be as tight as could be. Chicago would score first before the Elite ‘02s scored a pair of goals, which looked as if they would hold up as St. Louis took a 2-1 lead in the final minute of the game. But the Bulldogs pulled their goalie and scored the game-tying goal with 30 seconds remaining. The teams then played a heart-stopping five minutes of three-on-three hockey. “We dominated those five minutes and had numerous scoring chances,” Campbell said. “But their goalie came up with a number of tremendous saves.” The tournament championship would thus be settled in a three-man shootout. Although in this case it would take a fourth try. St. Louis shot first in the shootout and failed to score on its first two chances. Chicago also failed on its first two chances. St. Louis’ Seamus Campbell finally broke the ice with a goal on the Elite ‘02s third chance. But for the second time in the memorable game, Chicago would come back from the near dead and force a sudden death shootout, with a goal on its last try. Bob Lockwood would score what proved to be the tournament winner for St. Louis and Maddy Smith sent the St. Louis contingent, including all the mothers, home happy as he stopped the first try in sudden death for the Bulldogs. “All of these kids are highly skilled and motivated,” Campbell said. “They want to work and want to get better. It was another

good showing for St. Louis and bodes well for this age group in the fall.” STL Elite ’02 team members include: Chase Bradley, Seamus Campbell, Wesley Carbone, Blake Dangos, Mitchell Day, Will DeWitt, Jake Keller, Mason Langenbrunner, Bob Lockwood, Hunter Longhi, Zac Maupin,

Benjamin Parres, Matthew Smith, Alex Tarlas, Makenna Webster, Carson Wilhelm and Eli Wood Head Coach is Jim Campbell. Assistant Coaches are Jamie Langenbrunner, Scott Smith and Mark McLean (not pictured)

Learn to Play

This learn-to-play (LTP) program is for boys and girls in the St Louis area, born in 2004 and later. It is an instructional program focusing on teaching the fundamental basic skills used in playing the sport of ice hockey. There are two one-hour sessions per week. At each session the skaters will rotate through several skill/drill stations designed to introduce and practice specific fundamental skating and hockey skills. Each session also includes “mini-game scrimmages” where the skaters can put their skills to work, actually playing hockey in a controlled scrimmage. A jersey will be issued to each skater prior to the third session; the skaters will then be grouped by jersey color and expected to wear that jersey to every subsequent session. The jersey is his/hers to keep. The first session will be to accomplish skater check-in, orientation, equipment check and name tag distribution. After the skaters have completed check-in they can participate in a stick-and-puck for the remainder of this first session. The instructional program will officially start at the second session. Skaters can join the program at any time, space permitting and pay a pro-rated fee. A maximum of 75 skaters will be accepted to this program. There are no boundary or zip code restrictions for this program. It is open to skaters from all over the St. Louis Metro area.
