Blues, Wolves Announce Affiliation AHL - April 23, 2013 - www.theahl.com

The St. Louis Blues and Chicago Wolves announced Tuesday that the teams have reached a three-year affiliation agreement to make the Wolves the Blues’ American Hockey League affiliate.

The Wolves, who joined the AHL in 2001, play their home games at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Ill. In their 12-year

AHL history, the club has never had a losing season and has qualified for the postseason eight times, appearing in the league championship finals three times and winning the Calder Cup twice (2002, 2008).

The Wolves were formerly affiliated with the Atlanta Thrashers from 2001-11 and the Vancouver Canucks from 2011-13.

Prior to joining the AHL, the Wolves were members of the International Hockey League from 1994-2001 and won the Turner Cup twice (1998, 2000).

Senior Captain John Ramage Finished Among UW’s Top-10 Defenseman All-Time In Game Played University of Wisconsin - April 19, 2013 - www.uwbadgers.com MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin men’s hockey senior captain John Ramage inked a two year entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames on Wednesday, concluding a fouryear playing career with the Badgers. The contract begins for the 2013-14 season. The St. Louis native, who graduates this year with a degree in life sciences communications, was a two-year team captain for the Badgers and finished his senior campaign with career-best totals of eight goals, 12 assists and 20 points. Wisconsin’s leader with five game-winning goals in 2012-13, Ramage scored two game-winning tallies in UW’s run to the WCHA playoff title. His first two game-winning goals of the season both came in back-to-back overtime games on Jan. 11-12 at Minnesota State, which gave

Wisconsin its first-ever road sweep over MSU. For his efforts against the Mavericks, Ramage was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. Ramage finished his Badger career on a four-game point-scoring streak, which included a goal and five points. Over his last eight games, Ramage scored two goals and nine points. Prior to his two years as Badgers captain, Ramage captained Team USA to a bronze medal at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. He also won gold at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. Ramage came to Wisconsin from the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Is Back The Blues Beard-A-Thon Fans Again Invited To Grow One For The Team ®

April 24, 2013

ST. LOUIS – The NHL playoffs are unlike anything else. The passion, the excitement, and yes, the playoff beards. In keeping with a great hockey tradition and supporting local charities, the St. Louis Blues again invite their fans to grow one for the team this playoff season. The Blues BEARD-A-THON® is an opportunity for fans to grow their own playoff beard and raise money for charity. Proceeds from the 2013 Blues BEARD-A-THON® will benefit the Blues 14 Fund and The Joshua Chamberlain Society. Participants in the Blues Beard-a-thon can invite family, friends, and business associates to pledge their playoff beards. By joining the Blues Beard-a-thon, fans pledge to maintain their beard as long as the Blues remain in the playoffs. Fans who are unwilling, or unable, to grow playoffs beards can also pledge their favorite Blues player. Blues fans raised more than $41,000 for The Joshua Chamberlain Society in 2012 and hope to surpass that number this playoff season. The Blues and the Blues 14 Fund are proud to support the Joshua Chamberlain Society (JCS) through the Beard-a-thon program. The Joshua Chamberlain Society is a local organization that provides support to veterans in our area that have sustained permanent combat injuries. “The Blues Beard-A-Thon is a fun way for the fans to participate in one of the great-

est traditions in pro sports and raise money for two great causes at the same time.” said Blues COO, Bruce Affleck.“The Blues and the Blues 14 Fund are once again proud to support the Joshua Chamberlain Society (JCS) through this great program. We look forward to continuing the success of the Beard-A-Thon, which last year raised more than $41,000 for these great charities.” For more information or to enroll in the Blues Beard-a-thon, please log onto www. beardathon.com/blues

About BEARD-A-THON®

Since 2009, BEARD-A-THON® has raised more than $2 million for NHL team charities, and each year, some 7,000 fans, players and alumni sign up to grow in support of those worthy causes in their area. About St. Louis Blues 14 Fund & Joshua Chamberlain Society The St. Louis Blues 14 Fund, charitable trust of the St. Louis Blues, is proud to support the Joshua Chamberlain Society through the Beard-A-Thon program. The St. Louis Blues 14 Fund was created in 1998 to honor former Blues player Doug Wickenheiser, #14, who passed away from a long battle with cancer in early 1999. The Blues 14 Fund focuses on four areas of giving, which include cancer care and awareness, health and wellness, education and youth hockey development. Thanks to the members of the Blues family, including our fans, community partners,

players, alumni and staff, the St. Louis Blues 14 Fund has contributed more than $3 million to the St. Louis community. The Joshua Chamberlain Society (“JCS”) is a grass roots, St. Louis-based charity that was formed with the mission of providing long term support to veterans from the greater St. Louis area that have sustained permanent combat injuries fighting for our nation. It also provides long term support to the children of local veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in service. The unique mission of JCS is that it adopts, in the truest meaning of that word, veterans or the family of deceased veterans, and commits to provide support for the long term. Five, ten and 20 years after the serviceman or woman has suffered grievous and permanent injuries, the veteran or his family will know that the citizens of St. Louis still honor and recognize their enormous sacrifice for our freedoms. As their injuries or death is permanent, so is the support that JCS provides. This

support is multi-faceted and comes in the form of gifts, tuition assistance, monetary donations, and the like--anything that JCS identifies as something that will improve the quality of life for these heroic Americans.

About Playoff Beards

A playoff beard is the superstitious practice of a hockey player not shaving his beard during the playoffs. The player stops shaving when his team enters the playoffs and does not shave until his team is either eliminated or wins the Stanley Cup®. The tradition started in the 1980s by the New York Islanders.

Team Missouri Shows Well In High School Showcase by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ A group of 20 junior and senior hockey players from the Mid-States Hockey Association and Mississippi Valley Conference represented Missouri April 10-14 at the America’s Showcase in Pittsburgh. And they represented themselves and the area well winning four of their six games with both of the losses coming by just one goal. It was the first time that Team Missouri participated in the Showcase in Pittsburgh. But they had competed for over 20 years in the Chicago Showcase until 2009. Forty-five players from Mid-States and Mississippi Valley came out for an open tryout for the team. They had to play in at least 75% of their high school games, which eliminated many of the elite players in the area. There were five practices and a controlled scrimmage from which the 20 players and three alternates were selected to play on Team Missouri. The roster did not include any players from stalwart teams such as CBC, St. Louis University High or Lindbergh. They represented 13 schools and had just a couple of practices together before traveling to Pittsburgh for the 20-team tournament. Team Missouri opened the tournament with two wins in pool play. They defeated Team Arizona 6-2 as Jon Weisner and Earon Tourville scored a pair of goals each. That was followed by a 7-2 triumph over Team Washington with Mario Sanchez and Timothy Faulkner scoring twice. Team Texas defeated Team Missouri 3-2 in the final pool play game although it was essentially a tie. Texas scored an empty net goal with six seconds to play to break the 2-2 tie. “The procedure to get to the next round was not clear and we were under the impression that we needed the extra goal to get through,” said Mid-States President and one of the team’s coaches Jeff Hayes. As it turned out, Team Missouri would have advanced to the playoff round with a win, loss or tie. They won their first game in that round 7-1 over Team Florida. Six play-

ers scored for Team Missouri with Jacob Champaign leading the way with two goals. Drake Mossengren scored twice but it was not enough in a 3-2 loss to Team New Jersey. Missouri closed out with a 7-3 win over New York as Cameron Durham scored twice. The Showcase was not a true tournament in that there was no true champion. It was used as an event in which talent was on display for coaches from throughout the country. “I think that every player we took was talked to by scouts, whether it be a junior team or a college,” Hayes said. Hayes was extremely impressed with the way Team Missouri squad played as a team despite not being together for long. “I had coaches and managers from other team ask if we had played in any other tournaments,” Hayes said. “They thought that we had been together since before Christmas. I would love to see how this group would do after being together for a while. A lot of the kids on the team only played high school hockey. So it was rewarding to take these kids and see them compete against good competition and get looked at by the coaches and scouts.” Members of Team Missouri included: Zachary Jost (Oakville); Dan Kern (Chaminade); Jacob Champaign (Seckman); Marshall Gevers (Edwardsville); Jon Weisner (Edwardsville); Joseph Rupp (Duchesne); Jacob Young (Fox); Cameron Durham (Lutheran South); Spencer Peyton (Fox); Drew Sturm (Seckman); Earon Tourville (Holt); Timothy Faulkner (Wesclin); Nick Hoehne (Holt); Mario Sanchez (Summit); Alex Henricks (Marquette); Brandon Klar (MICDS); Nicholas Tobey (Marquette); Drake Mossengren (Holt); Alex Rowland (Oakville); and Riley Wood (Northwest).

Checkers. “We beat them both times but the games were competitive and we knew it was going to be a physical game. It was a different by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ style.” But, as was the The Affton Americans Bantam Major case throughout the season and especially Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL) team are national champi- so in the national tournament, the speed of the Americans overcame the size of the ons again. Affton left no doubt what so ever as to Checkers and proved to be the difference. “They say that speed kills and we have a their title this year as they captured the U14 Tier II 2A National Championship in very fast team,” Ocello said. “We not only have the speed but we also have depth to Charlotte, N.C. in dominating fashion. Affton outscored its five opponents in the go along with it. The individual skill level national tournament by a combined score of these guys improved so much from the beginning of the season and we peaked at of 49-4. “You certainly don’t expect those kinds the right time. We played our best in our of scores in a national tournament,” Affton final five games.” The Americans closed out the national coach Matt Ocello said. “But we felt prepared after playing in one of the best leagues in tournament in style with a 7-0 win over the the country and we also played in some Alaska All-Stars. Affton scored three times high caliber tournaments which was very in the first period and put an exclamation point on the championship with four third beneficiary.” The Americans seemed to take a big sigh period goals. John Massarra recorded the of relief after winning the Missouri State shutout. “John really wanted that shutout and he Regional title and in the process defeat their earned it,” Ocello said. “He made some big nemesis, St. Peters, in the championship game. It was the first win in six games for saves, especially when they had a couple of five-on-three opportunities.” Affton against the Selects. Luke Gassett and Andy Willis led the “I think that the guys really picked up way offensively in the tournament for the some confidence after finally beating the Selects,” Ocello said. “They proved a lot to Americans with 14 points each in the five themselves with that win and came into games. That led all scorers in the tournament. nationals in a very good frame of mind.” It was the third year in a row in which Affton cruised through pool play at nationals with wins over the Fort Wayne (IN) Affton played in the national finals. The Komets (14-0), the St. Alban (VT) Leafs (9-1) Americans lost a heart-breaker in overtime in 2011 against the Indianapolis Racers and and the East Coast (NC) Eagles (15-2). The only concern coming into the play- won the title last year, beating the Carolina off round was overconfidence after such Jr. Hurricanes in the finals. The rosters from the two titlists were vastly a dominating effort in pool play. But the different. Cameron Cox was the lone player stellar play would continue in the semifinals to play on both the 2012 and 2013 national and finals. “We made sure that they did not look champions. The Bantam Major Missouri State ahead in any of the games,” Ocello said. Champions are Nick Balestra, Cameron

Affton Midget Majors Win National Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ The Affton Americans Midget Major Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL) team finished with a number two ranking nationally at the conclusion of the U18 Tier II 3A national championship earlier this month in Hartford, Ct. But that ranking, in the convoluted system, has little meaning as the Americans also came home from Connecticut with a national championship. And they did so in the more prestigious 3A division. Affton was ranked No. 1 for most of the season but because of population had expected to play in the 2A division as most teams in St. Louis do in national tournaments. But they were moved to Class 3 with teams from the more hockey rich states such as Michigan, Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio and New York. “I didn’t find out about it until about two weeks before the tournament,” Affton coach Chris Flaugher said of the change. “One of the parents sent me a text message and said they found out on the website. We were not given any explanation but were glad when we found out. It was going to be more of a challenge and a chance to play more of the top teams.” Affton had to play four top 10 teams en route to the championship, including the No. 1 team in the rankings, the Sylvania (OH) Maple Leafs. The Americans did not play like a No. 1 or No. 2 team in their opening pool play game as they fell to sixth-ranked Littleton (CO) Hawks 3-2. Affton led 2-0 after two periods but allowed three third period goals. “We had an internal meltdown in that third period,” Flaugher said. “It turned out to be a real eye-opener and we just took the negative and turned it into a positive.” Each of the final five games in the tournament were eventually elimination games for the Americans and they responded with tremendous efforts in all of them. Affton’s dream of a national title were

almost gone in the second game of pool play as the Anaheim (CA) Jr. Ducks scored a late first period goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Americans scored a goal in the second period to tie it and then took the lead on a power play goal in the third period. The Ducks put on pressure but Jacob Bopp made some key saves and the Americans added an empty net goal for the 3-1 victory. Affton closed out pool play with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Arrows from New York. The top two ranked teams in the nation matched up in the quarterfinals and it turned out to be all Affton. The Americans won 4-1 with the only goal by Sylvania coming in the final minutes of the game. In fact, the Americans would give up only three goals, all against ranked teams, in the playoff round. And all of them came in the last five minutes of the game. Affton defeated the Wonderland (CT) Wizards 4-1 in the semifinals and the Chicago (IL) Bruins 3-1 in the championship game. Wonderland was ranked 10th while Chicago was ranked fourth. “This was a true 20-man effort,” Flaugher said of the national title. “Every one of the 20 guys played a big part in this title. We could not have done it with just one goalie, with just one dominate line or one or two defensemen. We won because we had depth on the blue line, four lines of forwards and two very good goaltenders.” Members of the National Championship Affton Americans Midget Major CSDHL team include: Jacob Bopp; Bill Hindle; Cameron Dulle; Nolan Wuesthoff; Tom Croghan; Phillip Solari; Ryan Croghan; Dustin Smith; Andy McGlynn; Josh Bell; Shawn Leslie; Michael Humme; Ryan Hodges; Lance French; Brian Hogan; John Hogan; Glen Ryan; Frankie Melton; Brendan McClew; and Patrick Mitchell. The team is coached by Chris Flaugher, Tom Cooper, Jason Gillick, and Ryan Kretzer and managed by Mike Croghan.

The NA3HL will host a four day showcase that allows every team in the league to play in the same facility which will allow scouts from Tier I, Tier II Juniors and college hockey programs to scout our league. In addition, the NA3HL will send two “All Star” teams to the NAHL Top Prospects tournament which has a creditable reputation for exposure and player advancement. Why play for the Jr. Blues? The Jr. Blues have directly advanced players to the UHL, IHL, OHL, QMJHL, USHL, NAHL,EJHL, CJHL (Canada), NCAA Division III, and the ACHA.
